The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Despite the protestation of radio's Rush Limbaugh that, "if you are conservative, then you are not wanted'' in the NFL, following his rejection by the league, professional football team owners tend to share the same political bench with Limbaugh.

National Football League owners and their family members have given $1,458,946 to Republicans since Jan. 1, 2007, more than three times as much as the $419,042 they contributed to Democrats during that period, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington-based research group, Bloomberg News reports today.

"Football team owners are, by and large, very wealthy and conservative," said Sheila Krumholz, executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics. "Not only do they own clubs; they are themselves a very small, very elite club."

Limbaugh was dropped last week from a group seeking to purchase the St. Louis Rams following criticism of provocative comments he has made. The conservative radio talk-show host lost a football commentary job on ESPN in 2003 after saying that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, who is black, was overrated, and that "the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well." On his regular radio show in 2007, Limbaugh described the NFL, where blacks account for 67 percent of all players, as "a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons."

Becoming the owner of a NFL franchise requires the approval of 24 of the 32 teams, Bloomberg's Jonathan Salant notes. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay told reporters at an owners' meeting in Boston that he wouldn't back an ownership group that included Limbaugh. Irsay supports Democrats. He gave $5,750 to the party's candidates for the 2008 and 2010 elections, Bloomberg reports.

Other owners who primarily support Democrats include Zygi Wilf, who purchased the Minnesota Vikings in 2005. Wilf and his family contributed $76,800 to the Democratic Party and its candidates since 2007, while also giving $22,500 to Republicans.

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross gave $69,700 to Democrats and $5,100 to Republicans. New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft donated $52,000 to Democrats. He also gave $22,700 to the Republican National Committee.

But most of the NFL owners' money goes to the GOP: Alex Spanos, the San Diego Chargers' owner, and members of his family contributed $467,523 to Republican candidates and party committees between Jan. 1, 2007, and June 30, 2009. Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets, donated $121,100 to Republicans for the 2008 and 2010 elections. Robert McNair, the owner of the Houston Texans, gave $112,214, all to Republicans.

See the NFL financial roster in Salant's report at Bloomberg.

Did you want to correct that Mark?

Mark are you thinking about the lies that were used. You know the ones people may be sued over.

The ironic thing about this whole episode is how easily Rush Limbaugh is becoming a caricature of those people who he spends his entire radio show railing against. The episode shows that when conservatives like Limbaugh preach about personal responsibility, a different set of rules applies to them.

Instead of accepting his fate for being rejected by the ownership group which hoped to buy into the National Football League, Limbaugh continues to insist that the NFL is an outpost of both racism and liberalism. The league rejected him for his political views, he claims. But the fact is the NFL made a business decision just like other sports leagues have done to other prospective buyers regardless of their balance sheets. And if he thinks as if he is under the microscope, he should consider how the NBA is scrutinizing potentially the first foreign owner in league history

Clown in DC,
I hope Druggy Rush tries it, because when a judge gets a look at some of the things Limbaugh HAS said Limbaugh will get his fat butt laughed out of court.

In typical Republican fashion, Limbaugh has decided to shoot the messenger. He refuses to take ownership for his comments, insisting he was misquoted and libeled by the liberal press...like the Wall Street Journal and Faux Noise. But as Leonard Shapiro of the Miami Herald notes, Limbaugh is just another GOPocrite.

"Oh please. This is not about politics, and the country will do just fine without Limbaugh owning a piece of a football team. No, it's about a man who has every right under the First Amendment to say what he thinks. But he also better be prepared to accept the consequences of some of his hurtful and insensitive remarks."

Limbaugh was dropped last week from a group seeking to purchase the St. Louis Rams following criticism of provocative comments he has made.

Actually, after lies were told by Limbaugh critics. Facts eventually ruled the day, however, the damage had been done to the point of a "No Confidence" vote.

There's absolutely no denying Rush Limbaugh is gruff, farthest of right wing, opinionated and mouthy! So are plenty of other people on the left side of the political spectrum.

He was attacked with lies at just the right time to scare the NFL owners enough to drop him like a hot "rotten" potatoe.

Mark Silva, you're weak and inscrupulous to not admit to the thruth! So what, you hate Limbaugh! at least be truthful and debunk the lies.

Holy crap, JD, I thought you were an editor of sorts. Did you go to the Dan Quayle school of journalism? Potatoe??
And more to the point, what "lies" need debunking. Limpbaugh did make the comments about McNabb, he did make the comments about "Crips and Bloods" sans the weapons, it's indisputable. The man's a bigot, pure and simple. Some NFL players say they would not play for a team in which he is part owner. So tell us, please, what "thruth" did M.S. neglect to tell us?

Really? So you think that because of a couple of made up racist quotes that were attributed to Limbaugh that that automatically excuses all the other racist quotes that Limabaugh did make?

Try again....

NFL owners political contributions? How about something closer to home, Mark. Such as news media contributions?

Here's some facts:

ABC employee contributions, 2008 election, per IBD: $160,000 to Obama, $5,000 to McCain--a 32 to 1 ratio.
2004-2007 journalist contributions, per MSNBC--125 contributed to Democrats, 16 to Republicans--an 8 to 1 ratio.
2008 IBD comparison of political contributions:
NBC employees $104,184 to Dems, $3,150 to GOP
CBS $45,508 to Dems, $966 to GOP
ABC $17,320 to Dems, $4,717 to GOP
Fox $40,573 to Dems, $0 to GOP
Fox News $1,280 to Dems, $0 to GOP

Surprised to learn this? You would be, if you depended on The Tribune or The Swamp for news.

Rush Limpbag........How does he hate them...let me count the ways:

1. Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?

2.Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.

3.The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies.

4.They’re 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?

5.[To an African American female caller]: Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.

6. I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They’re interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there’s a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn’t deserve.

7.We need segregated buses… This is Obama’s America.

8.Obama’s entire economic program is reparations

9.Obama is “more African in his roots than he is American” and is “behaving like an African colonial despot”

10.Obama is an angry Black guy

The Limbaugh discriminatory action had nothing to do with owners' contributions to political parties. It had everything to do with the commissioner and owners bowing to lies generated by the race-baiting usual suspects. Now that those two know the soft under belly of pro football, wait until their next demands.

Funny how Rush was quick to cast blame on Obama's America when I thought it was his America that spurned him. Why you ask? Because it was solely the NFL and the owners who decided that they didn't need the attention his ownership would bring because it is certain that he would bring it up on his radio show.
The NFL exercised it's freedom to associate and conduct business with whom it wishes. That freedon of association is exactly what they're doing. Rush is entitled to say whatever he wishes, but that in no way means that he is entitled to own a team. There is nothing more American than to exercise your rights to refuse to do business with someone you dislike or think would be bad for your business. It is not based in thier racism against Rush, but in their evaluation that Rush would be detrimental to their business.
Go America!

I see once more this is something that is beyond you. It is not what he did said, you with me soon far. It is what people said Rush said when Rush did not say them, keeping up. See that is were they jumped the track and can be sued. I hope you really understand because I will only do this once for you. It is also why CNN and MSNBC had to say they were wrong and Rush did not say what they reported. CNN can fact check a SNL skit but, not a news story.

And no I'm not a Rush fan and no I do not think he should own a sports team. But, that is besides the point.

I think it is very telling that NFL owners, a conservative group if ever there was one, have rejected Rush Limbaugh. It speaks to the deep division that now exists between traditional William F. Buckley type conservatives and far right radicals led by Rush Limbaugh. A recent survey shows that only 20% of Americans self-identify as Republican. Most moderate conservatives have fled the party which has become too radical for their tastes.

Clown in DC,
For every racist quote that Druggy Rush didn't make there are a hundred racist quotes that he did make.

Clown, if you're going to run with the big boys you're going to have to step up your game. The Repugs need to send you back down to their AAA club.

Democrats, liberals, come on now. U love Rush. He allows u to be who u r, ~ intransigent knee jerk slingers of muck, mire, and mud. Whether its Rush To Judgment, or NFL Rushing Leaders, your Hate Rush dandruff is in full flake mode when u c the letters R-U-S-H. U need Rush. The relationship is not mutual.

Most of the NFL owners probably are Republicans, but look at Robert Kraft. He does what it takes to operate in the Peoples Commonwealth of MA. If u are in business, but not in politics, u are not in business. These mostly Republicans are venerable Rockefeller styled Republican$. Their only real political philosophy is the acquisition and preservation of $$$. Consistent with that goal is flying under the radar. They don’t want the attention and examination that fellow team owner Rush Limbaugh would bring to their highly select club. Liberals always have to over-complicate.

Irsay is a demoncraptic Racist so of course he doesn't lke a strong conevative that fights against the oppression and racism of the Obama Administration and all of the bigots of the left, this is all of them of course) ...Rush Limbaugh did not say the nfl is 67% black so that is why they act like bloods and crips..another lie these assholes spew!!! Funny how all the nfl people that spewed lies and hatred towards Limbaugh were all Demoncraps!!!!

How many white people has Rush Limbaugh told to "take the bone out" of their nose? If he's says it to everyone then I guess he's not racist based on that comment alone.

Really? So you think that because of a couple of made up racist quotes that were attributed to Limbaugh that that automatically excuses all the other racist quotes that Limabaugh did make?

Try again - I'm just pointing out facts. Read my earlier post again, I am not defending the guy in any way.

I'm just pointing out the fact that there were lies told that were intentional. People claiming to quote him when they knew they were lieing. These lies were exposed, so game over but the match stil plays on and on.

I don't listen to Limbaugh because he's just too far out there and he is a racist - I don't like that kind of stuff. I do not necessarily disagree with all of his positions on government though. I can get plenty of "the oppositions" views about him without even going there.

I was not trying to stand up for other stuff he as said, reread the poll. I know it is a lot to read all at once for you.

If you do not understand just say so and go back playing with the puppies and let the Big Dog post.

You might remember the car dealer who made International new for his promotion giving away AK47s with the purchase of a Truck.

He’s back in the news again and this time it doesn’t involve guns, but there’s definitely a political statement being made.

This same car guy is now protesting against the NFL because of the whole Rush Limbaugh/St. Louis Rams ordeal.

Saw this on CNSNews. You can find more information on the story there.

Just wanted to pass it on, I thought it was interesting.

Thanks,
