The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Something funny has happened on the way home from Copenhagen, where President Barack Obama lost his bid for the Chicago Olympics:

His public approval has risen.

Something else came out of Oslo in the meantime: A Nobel Prize for Peace.

We're hard-pressed for any other explanation for today's measurement of the president's job approval in the Gallup Poll's daily trackng surveys: 56 pecent.

Up 2 percentage points in a day.

Just last week, the president's approval rating had fallen to 50 percent in the Gallup track, as measured in the average of surveys from Oct. 3-5. That marked a second slump to the lowest point of his presidency in the Gallup track -- Obama had seen 50 a month before. That also followed the International Olympic Committee's rejection of Chicago's bid for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games on Oct. 2.

But later in the week, and with two days of polling in since the Nobel Committee announced Obama's Peace Prize at dawn Eastern Daylight Time on Friday, Obama's approval-rating rose again.

Today, it's 56 percent -- still some 13 points shy of the peak that the president reached, 69 percent, in the Gallup track in the days following his inauguration. But still well above water.

One of our Republican sources suggests today that perhaps it's because Obama hasn't spent every hour of the last several days touting "an unpopular health-care plan." But the big news of the past few days was the Nobel. If anyone has another explanation for the turnaround in the last few days, we're glad to hear it, here in the Swamp.

"If anyone has another explanation [than the Nobel Prize] for the turnaround in the last few days, we're glad to hear it."

Happy to help, Mark.

Since Obama hasn't actually DONE anything the last week, the explanation isn't Obama. The true explanation lies not the prize itself, but the over-the-top fawning coverage of Obama by the Obama media.

President Obama has reignited our pride...Sure we were let down after the Olympic bid loss...but it showed how much Chicago could do to improve..Maybe we can stil make those housing changes a well as the transportation improvements...And the Nobel Prize..What a shock but what a delight that America's standing in the world has charged ahead...I think the world is proud of President Obama even though some Republicans are not.

Re: Future Recognition of Barack Obama.
2010 Declared a Saint. Investigation period waived due to established miracles: cure of cancer and swine flu; peace in Mid-East, Iran and Afghanistan; economy highest level ever; solved fusion that eliminated CO2 and is so cheap electricity is free.
2011 Proclaimed Emperor of the World by all nations
2012 Proclaimed the Messiah of all religions
2013 Declared God on Earth
Of course, Noble Peace Committee declared Apostle and judge nations.

Perhaps a few more people are starting to understand that the guy has only been in office for only a matterr of months, and that it's way too soon to judge his performance good or bad.

It's not what actually happened so much as his reaction to it. He was gracious, humble, didn't blame anyone for the Olympics, spread the credit around for the Nobel Peace Prize. It's also about how he handled McChrystal speaking out, and how he's talking to lots of people about the Afghanistan strategy. We like his attitude.

Mark, I would say it is because of BS polling. Ramussen still has him at 49 And there is this: "While the President’s ratings have moved little since he won the Nobel Peace Prize, skepticism about the Nobel selection process has grown. Fifty-eight percent (58%) now see politics in the process, up from 40% a year ago."
Most folks, on both sides of the spectrum, are shaking their heads over Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize. I mean, nominations had to have been in by Feb. 1. What exactly did he do in 10 days, or even the past nine months, to warrant the prize? That's a question MOST folks are asking.

Funny, the Rasmussen polling site has his approval number DOWN, along with an all time low for Congress. obama didn't deserve the Nobel. He has not changed the "attitude of the world concering the USA, unless it is to make up look WEAK in the faces of the terrorists who want to kill us.
And where exactly has that change of attitude manifested itself? Anything tangible? And precisely whose attitude has changed? The Taliban? Al Qaeda? Russia? Iran? North Korea? France? Israel? Anywhere?

He got the award as a partisan token from 5 progressive leftist Norwegian judges. Nothing more.........Nothing less.

Bruce! It's worse than you could possibly imagine!

The Nation is converting, slowly and secretly, to Islam!

I think you’re on to something, John. But your time line is a bit slow. In another thread today someone named angellight wrote:
.
“And as Newsweek editor Evan Thomas has stated previously -- "In a way Obama is standing above the country, above the world. He's sort of GOD. He's going to bring all different sides together." This is his most holy mission, to unite and bring peace and cooperation throughtout the world.”
.
So don’t be surprised if tomorrow’s headlines read: “Obama Anointed Messiah and God on Earth.” It’s already happening. The inmates are already in charge of the asylum.

Well, it sort of comes down to:

There was only one Babe Ruth.

There was only one Clark Gable.

And there is only one Barack Obama.

Don't ask how he's doing, unless you also ask:

Compared to what?

Let us just be proud and be happy in the moment...we are not in the minds of the Nobel committee but they must see something the rest of the naysayers may not...they are standing outside of the fray and may see something you could never dream of.

The Catholic Church announced 5 new Saints - I was waiting for Obama's name.

The right wing reaction to this situation is hilarious.
First, BHO didn't ask for or seek this honor.
Second, the right wing reaction aligned with the Taliban, Iran, AQ, is stunningly stupid. The Grand Old Zombie Party couldn't do the smart thing; Congratulate BHO and let it go away. No, they have to demagog it.
Well, up goes BHO's numbers.
Congrats, crypto-fascist Repubs; You are siding against the American people yet again.

Possibilities....Computer glitch. More gays were accidentally pooled after his new commitment to obliterate "dont ask, don't tell." Galop polling has now been expanded to include Elitist Europeans outside the US. It's the weekend. I'll go with a variation of number two and four.

Looking at The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll, Obama is at -6. Right a bump up, just like the award itself both are a joke.

C.Morris, so now the Repubs are "crypto-fascist" and "siding against the America people."
Does that mean we're not racist anymore?
I have tp admit it...nobody knows the DailyKos-Ed Schultz and Keith Olbermann's talking points better than you.

Paulo

Obama winning the Nobel should offend those on the left. Aren't you the ones that are supposed to be for equality and fairness? Equal pay and all that? Obama receives an award that he doesn't deserve; it's like when the guy that doesn't deserve the promotion always gets it, because the boss likes him, or has other motives to promote them over someone that deserves it based on merit. Guess you don't really practice what you preach; what a shock.

For instance, a woman doctor in Afghanistan, who actually risked her life to help others. She is deserving. http://trueslant.com/pjtobia/2009/10/10/afghan-woman-loses-nobel-prize-to-obama/
But, she won't be getting the award, or the help that the prize money could have brought, or the recognition. She's not a politician, and there won't be countless hours of inane blather aired on the media about her. Then again, the world doesn't really need her. We have the great and powerful Ozbama.

Gallop might have Obama numbers up from 52% when they last polled, to 56% now.
However Pew Research has him down from 55% to 52%
Quinnipiac has him not moving at all,
Rasmussen Reports has him down by 1. etc...
Real Clear Politics ave. has bumped him from an ave 52.2% to 53%.
In reality this has done little to nothing.
AP reported the same thing a couple of days ago, trying to give hope to his hardcore left that his numbers a getting drastically better. It's nothing but smoke and mirrors by AP & Silva. We're not buying it.
The American people are not as dumb as some in the media think we are. Please!

C Morris, stop confusing Bruce with facts.

Obama's numbers will continue to go up and down, but seldom will they go below 50%.

Just like the election last year.

Day by day, he was never behind, if you recall.

For a country in a depression, with an economy collapsed by 8 disastrous years of Bush, with 2 essentially lost wars from which to withdraw,
isn't it amazing that his numbers are always over 50%?

Maybe the public LIKES the Obama media, Bruce.

Wait. Hold on. Maybe the public LIKES Obama.

Why is the public so deluded, Bruce?

The truth is out there, isn't it?
Rush, Sean,Glenn----

why don't the scales fall from the eyes of the public, Bruce?

With all that truthiness being broadcast hourly by Rush Sean and Glenn?

I still don't understand, Bruce:

Your thoughts, please.

Not dumb, just not paying attention: Those other polls mentioned are month to month or period to period largely. Gallup too showed a decline month to month. These are daily trackng figures. Pew's arent. And we reported them when they hit a low, of 50, and we report them when they rise six points within a week. As for some of the outliers mentioned, let us know what the Cap'n Crunch poll shows.

After a year of your "fried chicken" jokes during Obama's campaign, I feel very, very comfortable that you are both.

Little Johnny D,
Barack Obama didn't just appear on Earth on January 20th so I'm not sure what to make of your pointing out nominations had to be made Febuary 1st. My guess is your simply puking out a GOP talking point so asking you what exactly you mean will not result in any meaningful explanation. I at least give you some credit and assume you don't believe you have to be a President in order to win the prize.

The "rise" lies exactly in the margin of error for the poll, though the scientific nature of the poll, including numbers of people polled, location, etc, were not cited. I'm not saying that it didn't go up... potentially it did. But polling data is sketchy at best, though it is held in such high esteem by the media. Gallup's methods are not stated on their site... perhaps they're widely known, but it would be more responsible for them to state their methods on their website.

Today Obama's Presidential Approval Index rating is -8.

Am I the only one who is entertained by the pathological obsession that wing nuts have with Obama's popularity?

As for some of the outliers mentioned, let us know what the Cap'n Crunch poll shows.

Who's us, Mark? You and your basement pajama party buddies? Or, you and your multiple posting IDs?

I wonder and ponder...where is US headed to...?? I can only see two possible scenarios..and here they are... http://typobounty.com/Funny/Obama_1.htm OR

I will tell you why Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize. Because, he inspire a younger generations to do the right thing. We learn not to be like the old shrubs. So, in celebration, I wrote this poem:

A Forest Full of Trees – Poem 68

When I was young, I was afraid of the raging Fire.
For, I thought it would consume me. And, I was afraid of Death.
But I was born behind a thousand giant sequoias.
And, the fire died away in front of them.
When I was young, I was afraid of the howling western wind.
For, I thought it would break me. And, I was afraid of Death.
But I was born behind a thousand giant sequoias. And, the wind died down in front of them.
That is a story of a young tree . . .with a young dream . . .

O’ hear me hum. . . hum with the soft autumn wind- I do.
O’ hear the howling wolves- for they love the Moon as much as I.
O’ hear the howling wolves- for they love her beautiful face as much as I.
But, now, the story is different- I can see the Moon with my very own eyes.
I once stood behind the giant sequoias. That was yesterday.
I once was shaded by the giant sequoias. That was yesterday.
For a thousand years had passed away . . .yet, I never forget that I am like them.
I bear a thousand scars from a thousand fires to prove my rightful place.

O’ watch me dance . . .dance with the flowers down below the valley- I do.
O’ watch the hummingbirds kiss- for they love to kiss the lovely flowers as much as I.
O’ watch the hummingbirds kiss- for they love her sweet lips as much as I.
But, now, the story is different- I can see the beautiful Morning Sun with my very own eyes.
I stand in front of the Forest. For that day is Today.
I shade the young trees behind me. For that day is Today.
For a thousand years had passed away . . .and I never forget that I am like them.
I bear a thousand broken branches from the never-ending howling wind to prove my rightful place.

Thought Mighty I am now . . .only a few giant sequoias are standing next to me.
So few we are, my Friends. The shrubs have taken hold on this good land.
Though, they can die a thousand deaths, they will sprout again.
They seem to never die because others easily take their place.
For they do not care about the flowers below, beauty has no meaning to them.
Only the rich soil below them- do they care for.
For they do not care for the Children of the Forest, howling is just noise to the ear.
Only the rich soil below them- do they care for.

But, I will stand here among my few friends.
We will stand together against the Fire once more.
If I shall ever fall, they will remember that a mighty sequoia once stood in front of them.
Just like the giant sequoia that once stood in front of me.
If I shall ever fall, perhaps the young trees can see the beautiful Moon and fall in love with her too- just like I.
So, I regret not. Do not cry for me. For, I lived my life beautifully and no longer fear Death.

What a "Great" example for our young people!. Accomplish nothing an win a Nobel Prize. It turns my stomach.

Paul, hold onto that thought.

In fact, hold onto it for the next 7 1/2 years.

Paul, hold onto that thought.

Um, King is Obama like the Sequoias...no couldn't be. He has not been tested by fire. He's not a shrub or a hummingbird. Is he the earth? Or, are you saying that he is falling in love with the moon. Makes sense...
