With a Chicagoan -- President Barack Obama -- winning the Nobel Prize for Peace, it's fitting to take a deeper look at the world's most famous awards for peaceful human achievement. The fact that they were founded by Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, is well known. But fewer know that Jerry Lewis was once nominated for the honor because of his muscular dystrophy fundraising. (The madcap comic lost out to Amnesty International.) Here are 10 other Nobel Prize ironies and oddities:
1 When Alfred Nobel's brother Ludwig died in 1888, French newspapers reported erroneously that Alfred had died (One headline read: "The merchant of death is dead."). Some historians believe the newspapers' mistake gave Alfred a sneak peek at his legacy and inspired his desire to be remembered for something other than explosives. Hence the Nobel Prize was born.
2 The year 1912 was momentous for French scientist Alexis Carrel. He won the Nobel for medicine, and he began an experiment in which he took tissue from the heart of a chicken embryo and kept it alive for decades to test how long warm-blooded cells could be sustained in the laboratory. The news media oversimplified the project, annually marking the birthday of the "chicken heart." The Nobel laureate died in 1944, and the chicken tissue was euthanized two years later, having lived for 34 years.
3 The 1926 Nobel Prize in medicine went to Danish researcher Johannes Fibiger for discovering a cause for cancer. Problem was, Fibiger wrongly concluded that roundworms had caused the tumors in his lab rats. Within a decade of Fibiger's triumph, other research cast serious doubt on his findings, and the embarrassment led Nobel officials to shy away from honoring cancer research for years to come. Fibiger did not live long enough to suffer the same chagrin. He died in 1928 -- of cancer.
4 Mohandas Gandhi never won the Nobel Peace Prize. James Joyce never won the literature prize. Both died before Nobel officials recognized their genius. Until 1974, a person could win the prize posthumously only if he or she died between the Feb. 1 deadline for nominations and the award announcement in October. That's how UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold won the Peace Prize in 1961, a month after dying in a plane crash. But in 1974, the rules became stricter. Only those who died between the announcement in October and the ceremony in December could be posthumous recipients.
5 University of Chicago graduate Edwin Hubble never won the Nobel Prize for physics despite transforming our view of the universe and providing the first evidence to support the Big Bang theory. Swedish engineer Gustaf Dalen, on the other hand, won the 1912 physics prize for improving gas flow to lighthouse beacons.
6 Portuguese neurologist Egas Moniz received the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1949 for pioneering the lobotomy. When Moniz developed this treatment to cut nerve connections in the frontal lobes of the brain, there was no other effective treatment for schizophrenia. But lobotomy soon was considered dehumanizing and subject to abuse, and drug therapies became far more effective. Today, some forms of "psychosurgery" are performed, but they are quite rare.
7 The most controversial honor in Nobel history? Perhaps the Peace Prize of 1973. Two members of the selection committee resigned to protest the choice of U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and North Vietnamese negotiator Le Duc Tho for crafting a Vietnam War peace deal. Tho rejected the prize, saying his nation was not yet at peace. Kissinger accepted, but in later years has been much criticized for his role in the secret war in Cambodia and the overthrow of a democratically elected government in Chile. Humorist-songwriter Tom Lehrer once said that "political satire became obsolete when Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Prize."
8 An eccentric California optometrist named Robert Graham announced in 1980 that he was forming the Repository for Germinal Choice, which was quickly nicknamed the Nobel Prize Sperm Bank. Graham said he had commitments from three Nobelists, but the publicity chased away two of them, leaving only physicist William Shockley, who advocated paying people whose IQs were less than 100 to be sterilized. No children were born from laureate sperm, and the center closed in 1999.
9 Toni Morrison, the author who was the first African-American woman to win a Nobel Prize, has expressed regrets that her books aren't credited to Chloe Anthony Wofford. That was her name before she started going by "Toni" at Howard University and adopted the name Morrison from her husband, whom she later divorced.
10 When University of Chicago professor Robert Lucas won the Nobel in economics in 1995, he had to give half of his $1 million prize money to his ex-wife because of a clause in their divorce settlement.

Kids, pay attention: all it takes to win a Nobel Peace Prize is good intentions without any measurable results (but a generous helping of mea culpas on behalf of the Great Satan doesn't hurt either).
Obama humbled? Color me cynical, but I seriously doubt it. The royal Ego just grew to ever more insufferable levels -- something I never would have thought humanly possible.
The Nobel committee owes Neville Chamberlain a posthumous prize and a big apology.

There are very good arguments for why Ghandi should have won it. There are no credible reasons for Obama to have won it. 'Peace' became a euphamism for political correctness without merit or accomplishment when Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Prize.

Buckle up, Republicans-Libertarians, this is just the beginning. Our President is going to make all of us forget all about that clown that preceded him into the Office of the Presidency, Bush&Cheney !! Now, if we could just get those ' real Americans " to stop with the obstructionism in our Congress, he would receive a well-deserved, standing ovation, from our nation !! He would receive that honor for his righting our out-of-control nation, with its financial, morale, and civil certitudes undermined by the previous set of bookends !!

Once Yassar Arafat won the award, the man who ordered the mass killing of children, the award became irrelevant, drenched in the blood of innocents. (Which is ironic considering the reason for the awards in the first place.)
Lately, this award has become the "feel good" consolation prize for the left when they fall short of expectations; Algore losing the presidency and Obama losing the Olympics. The NPP has become so transparently political and so completely irrelevant.

I had to do a lot of soul searching this past year and admit to myself I could no longer support the Republican Party as it degenerated into racism and xenophobia in the extreme.
I did vote for McCain, but I did so out of sincere principles. But I was clearly disturbed by the "proto tea parties" that his campaign stops had degenerated themselves into. McCain did redeem himself somewhat by cutting off the microphone from the woman who called Obama "an Arab" later on, but the damage was done.
I did not vote for Obama in 2008, but I will do so proudly in 2012.
And yes he deserves the Nobel Prize.
Obama has handled the Presidency with strength and poise in spite of the hateful vitriol sent his way because he is Black (I'm not referring to those who sincerely oppose him on policy). And yes, he has improved international relations by encouraging dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution.
The Republicans are becoming increasingly racist and xenophobic (some members even dislike having Michael Steele as the head of the party). The "party of Lincoln" used to be considered the progressive party when it came to issues like multiculturalism, especially pre-1968 when there were many Republican votes that helped pass Civil Rights legislation.
A multicultural America is the way of the future, and I don't fear that. Any rational person will embrace it. It is fitting that Barack Obama is President in this time and history.
And now, we will hear the rabid right denigrate and attack Obama in the next coming days.....again.

President Obama was given the prize for having the audacity to hope. Compare his vision of the future to that of the Bush/Cheney Administration. Consider also that America really is the greatest power ever conceived. Having the leader of America present a vision of hope and optimism has great power in the international community. ...........

Yes, Gandhi never won one, a whole different era then. But Al Gore, now Mustapha, and jimmy carter have won. What an incredible World we find ourselves in.
Roger Waters, the bass player for Pink Floyd would win all kinds of awards for his excellent bass playing musicianship. I love Roger Waters, I love Pink Floyd. Only problem, Dave Gilmour played the difficult bass parts on their recorded music. This is great though. Have a high profile. Castigate America as often as possible, Rip apart Israel ( u absolutely have to do this), and u too will be on the Nobel Peace Prize short list. This is great. Congratulations Mustapha.

I think the answer is simple.
After his crushing defeat in Copenhagen, his inability to resolve Gitmo, the beating he's taking on healthcare, his angst over whether to increase troop strength in Afghanistan, his failure to pass Cap and Trade before his pending second defeat in Copenahgen, his embarrassing progress with Iran and the mean way Netanyahu spoke to him at the U.N., the Nobel Committee decided to give him the award to boost his self esteem. A perfectly legitimate liberal reason to give someone an award.
In essence, this is a great big international hug because they thought he needed one.

I'm not surprised that Wingnut heads are exploding over this.
It's oh so easy to point at something and say "That sucks!" w/o offering a solution. It's something a toddler would do and it's why the Republican party gets no respect any where other than a small minority in the South. The rest of America and the World doesn't want anything to do with the knuckle-draggers on the American right.
It takes a lot more thought & common sense to move past what you see is a problem and offer solutions/alternates.
Republicans haven't been able to offer alternate choices, and I can only assume that they are stuck in their toddler years and/or they don't actually have alternate ideas and they're just being petulant because Obama won something that they have no chance at.

Three previous presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize; Woodrow Wilson [liberal democrat], Franklin D Roosevelt [liberal democrat], Jimmy Carter [liberal democrat].....and VP Al Gore [liberal democrat]....and now "The One", nominated in February???? ....I smell a rat.
"So soon? Too early. He has no contribution so far. He is still at an early stage. He is only beginning to act," said former Polish President Lech Walesa, a 1983 Nobel Peace laureate.
"Symbolism over Substance" when one values intentions far more than any worthwhile accomplishments.
"Awarded for multilateral-ism in diplomacy (meaning America isn't first), changes in policies more supportive of international relations (appeasement), support of treaties, such as global warming (climate change taxation hokum), etc."
You guys have it all wrong! Obama has accomplished plenty! Why he even authored 2 whole books!!..............about himself.........
Even CNN can't believe it:

From http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/15598
"Begun in 1901, the Nobel Peace Prize once stood for true achievement. It has long since become a pathetic instrument by a handful of men on the committee tasked with awarding it. The award to President Obama is a blatant effort to influence his decision on the conflict in Afghanistan.
The official reason for the award to Obama was “his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” Perhaps the committee had in mind his extraordinary world tour at the beginning of his presidency to apologize for what he perceived to be America’s failures.
In reality, the only thing his brief tenure in office has earned him is the contempt of the world’s leaders for his endless posturing, his preference for words over action, and his constant search for the world’s center stage spotlight.
Little wonder that Reuters reported that the announcement was greeted with “gasps of astonishment from journalists” in Oslo.
They aren’t the only ones who are astonished."

Does Pres Obama have a lot left to do? Absolutely. The Republicans left the place in tatters. But don’t pretend for a moment that Obama hasn’t accomplished astonishing things.
In this “short time”, President Obama has completely overhauled foreign policy.
President Obama has restored America’s prominence in international diplomacy.
President Obama has reached out to the Muslim world ion a way that was previously unimagined.
Obama has stated "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges" to which the Nobel prize's nominating committee responded: "For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman,"
Here is a brief list of some of the reasons President Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize:
3/18/8 – Obama caught world-wide attention for his moving speech on race relations
7/24/8 - Obama lays the foundation for a new era of international relations and began inspiring renewed hope in American leadership during his campaign speech in Berlin
11/6/8 – Obama’s victory was hailed as a promise of hope for the world.
12/1/8 – Obama began plans to restore U.N. ambassador to cabinet rank.
1/22/9 - Appointed a Special Envoy for Middle East peace
1/22/9 – Ordered the closing of Guantanamo Bay
1/22/9 – Ordered comprehensive review of detention policies
1/22/9 – Prohibited use of torture
1/22/9 - Signed an executive order to close CIA secret prisons
1/23/9 – Lifted “Global Gag Rule” on international health groups
1/26/9 – Began to address climate change by increasing fuel standards for automobiles
1/26/9 – Appointed Special Envoy for Climate Change
1/27/9 - Signs Lily Ledbetter “Fair Pay” Act
2/1/9 – Expanded healthcare for children by signing SCHIP
2/5/9 - Again addressed energy conservation by increasing standards for appliances.
2/24/9 – Directed almost $1 billion for prevention and wellness to improve America’s health
2/25/9 - Initiated international efforts to reduce mercury emissions worldwide
2/27/9 – Committed to responsibly ending the war in Iraq
4/1/9 – Agreed to negotiation of a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia.
4/1/9 – Enhanced U.S. – China relations
4/2/9 - Led global response to the economic crisis through the G20, obtaining commitments of $1.1 trillion to safeguard the world’s most vulnerable economies
4/4/9 - Renewed dialog with NATO and other key allies
4/5/9 – Announced new strategy to responsible address international nuclear proliferation
4/13/9 – Began easing tension with Cuba through new policy stance
4/17/9 - Secured $5 billion in aid commitments "to bolster [Pakistan's] economy and help it fight terror and Islamic radicalism"
4/22/9 - Developed the renewable energy projects on the waters of our Outer Continental Shelf that produce electricity from wind, wave, and ocean currents.
5/8/9 – Proposed International Affaires budget that included funds to create a civilian response corps -- teams of civilian experts in rule of law, policing, transitional governance, economics, engineering, and other areas critical to helping rebuild war-torn societies; Provide $40 million for a "stabilization bridge fund," which would provide rapid response funds for the State Department to help stabilize a crisis situation.
6/4/9 - Gave historic address to the Muslim World in Cairo - "American is not at war with Islam" Foreign affairs experts insist that Obama's engagement with the Muslim world has been remarkable. "He has been able to dramatically change America's image in that region"
8/4/9 - Used DIPLOMACY to free 2 American journalists from a North Korea prison
9/18/9 - De-escalation of nuclear tension through repurposing of missile defense prompting Russia to withdraw its missile plan.
There's more than this but Obama DESERVES the Nobel Peace Prize for his words AND his deeds. He has accomplished unprecedented change in U.S. politics and world affairs.

As someone who works almost daily with Europeans and other non-American coworkers, I have come to realize that America and its policies have a tremendous impact on ALL of the countries of the world. Despite this, they have no say whatsoever in who we elect to be our leaders. It's my considered opinion that this honor was bestowed not so much on the President but on the American people for making the right choice on behalf of all the civilized countries of the world in 2008 when we kicked the Republican party to the curb and elected Barack Obama president.

Well BO has done something to plug the holes in the dike. He has done a lot. Don't think any of it will make any difference in the economic long run but we have not had a depression AND A DEPRESSION WOULD NOT HAVE BROUGHT THIS WORLD PEACE! I really doubt whether any Republican could have done any better! But it will all come to naught because this country is going down and I hope during a democrat's reign and especially during a Negro's reign.

Congratulations President Obama. This is a good thing. You have been patient with Iran. I've thought a few times in the past half year that if McCain would have been president, we would be in a third "war" by now. Thanks for trying for peace.
Also, the troops--you know--those humans with limbs, blood, brains, and families--are worn out in Afghan. The military chaplins in Afghan. even say the troops are losing hope. Time to bring them home alive. Allow what's left of each of the living troops to grow into a peaceful old age. Allow them to give their blood willingly at a Red Cross blood drive in their home towns, rather than have it spilled in a harsh country with no government to advise or support, and where the people there don't care if we are there or not. Why allow our living men and women to be killed for indifference?

engagement in diplomacy, to an honest rapprochement with the muslim world, to actually gaveling in the UN Security council and then talking about nuclear DISARMAMENT (not non-proliferation, but disarmament), the shift in policy of deploying the ill-advises and provocative "missile shield" in eastern Europe, etc.
Obama (because we did it) replaced a nuclear armed "with us or against us" cowboy with a calm, reasonable, smart and empathic president who is reengaging the world and seeks ending of nuclear weapons.
Give the way American posture impacts the entire globe planet (a goliath astride the globe), I think that is more than enough to warrant the prize.

Evidently the right wing nutjobs are not alone in their assessment of Obama's "achievement" ...

little bill, you're so confused these days. President Obama is not America, he is the president, there's a huge difference.
Think (wrong word to use for you sorry) of it this way, you absolutely hated president Bush and claimed over and over he did not represent America yet , you consider yourself a solid bonified American don't you?
Hypocrite is what you are little bill, end of that story.

"Once Yassar Arafat won the award, the man who ordered the mass killing of children, the award became irrelevant, drenched in the blood of innocents. (Which is ironic considering the reason for the awards in the first place.)"
Close, but not quite. It became a joke the first time they awarded the prize to an unrepentant terrorist with the blood of innocents dripping from his hands: in 1979 when it ewas awarded to the terrorist Menachem Begin, who's terrorist organization Irgun gruely and intentonally blew up a hotel filled with innocents killing 91.Terrorist like Arafat and Begin have no place beiing awarded peace prizes or honored as leaders.

The Peace Prize shows that simply not being George W Bush is the greatest advancement in Peace this year

Damn Right Obama Deserved the Nobel Peace Prize.
Reasons Why Obama Deserves a Nobel Peace Prize, Oh let me count the ways....
Threats agains this life, his family, and racist comments that are levels never seen before.
Dealing with the Republican Party and their obstructionism.
Dealing wth the likes of Becks, Palins, and Limbaughs of the world.
Co-Existing with Fox Noise Channel.
Having to Clean Up George Bush's mess.
Tolerating the Blue Dogs.
Having patience with the main stream media.
Dealing with claims that he hates America. Limbaugh would claim that the award is more of an embarrassment then not getting the Olympics.

Why does President Obama deserve to win the Nobel Peace prize? Because he ran a fantastic campaign, won the Presidency, and STOPPED the continuation of the Bush reign of terror (via McCain/Palin). That alone was a step forward for peace and diplomacy large enough to deserve the prize.
Invading another country, no matter how despicable the leader, based on lies, committing war crimes, including torture, during the running of that war, and the many other crimes of the Bush Administration were committed by the most powerful nation on earth, and a nation that has been the beacon of peace and freedom since its inception. That has been the greatest threat to peace and freedom for the world that we have faced in recent times. Obama stopped that by winning the Presidency.
America is now back in the hands of a sane leader, and peace and freedom have a much brighter future now – way to go Barack!!

I just wanted to add my congratulations to the long list of proud Americans, who are overwhelmed with pride, that the international community has recognized President Obama, and by extension, the American electorate, for getting it right in our last presidential election. Congratulations, President Obama and America, we did a fine job this time, at the polls !! We welcome the Republican-Libertarians, one and all, in this celebration of America and her President, President Obama. Teddy Roosevelt won the Nobel for successfully mediating the end of the Russo-Japanese War.
Woodrow Wilson won it for establishing the League of Nations (predecessor of the UN).
Mother Teresa won it for her tireless lifetime efforts to help the ill in poverty stricken nations.
Even Jimma Carter won it for mediating peace between Egypt and Israel.
Yeah, I can see how obama "measured up" to these accomplishments in his first 2 weeks in office. Let's see, he picked-out his dog Bo and nominated a tax cheat during that time. Those acts definitely compare to what Mother Teresa did. (eyes rolling).
The Nobel is a joke.

Yo, Bobbie....It was THEODORE ROOSEVELT, A REPUBLICAN, 1906 who was the first president to win the Nobel Peace Prize. FDR never won it.

What is your point, exactly. You mention indivduals who you seem to indicate were worthy of the awards. Then you call the awards a "joke". So, have the awards ALWAYS been a joke, or do you just disagree with the current selection?
Personally, I don't understand the point of such awards. Not just this but, literary awards, the Oscars, "honorary" degrees, even sports MVP awards. They are all so subjective. An "in the eye of the beholder" sort of thing. They should do away with all such nonsense.

I think Ben was trying to point out that the other three actually did something “more” to deserve the award (on the assumption that handing out awards is legitimate), and that the award has become a joke.
.
I agree with you that all such awards are superfluous nonsense. But I also agree with Ben that the NPP has become something more than nonsense; it has become a farce. However, I wouldn’t say that it became a farce just because Obama won it. It became a farce when Arafat won it. Obama’s award is simply another example of how farcical awards can be when lobbed out by reindeer loving snowmen. I think there is really less difference between you position and that of Ben R. than you think.

I think the Nobel Prize is an honor for the President, he was very gracious about accepting it.
Posted by: Lisa | October 11, 2009 7:43 PM
John W, was the NPP a farce ehen Begin won it, or are Israeli terrorists in some way better than Palestinian terrorists? Were the innocents killed at the King David hotel somehow less dead than those killed by the PLO?

My mistake. I had completely forgotten about Begin receiving the award. That is further proof that the prize was a farce even at an earlier date. Thanks for reminding me.
