President Barack Obama, citing a global competition for development of clean-energy alternatives to oil, insisted today that the United States must win that race and called on Congress to enact legislation also intended to curb climate change.

"The nation that wins this competition is going to be the nation that leads the world,'' Obama told an audience at one of the nation's premier research universities in Massachusetts. "And I want America to be that nation - it's that simple.''
Obama praised "a legacy of innovation'' that "taps into something that is essential about America.

"Even in the darkest of times that this nation has seen, it has always sought a brighter horizon,'' the president told his audience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass. "We have always been about innovation. We have always been about discovery. That is part of our DNA.''

Obama was touting MIT's development of "cutting- edge clean-energy technology.'' He toured an MIT lab demonstrating wind, solar and batter power before delivering an address to an expected audience of about 750 in the Kresge Auditorium.

"There is no silver bullet,'' Obama said. "There is going to be a lot of debate about how we move from an economy that is importing oil to one that is exporting clean energy... There are going to be all kinds of debates, both in the laboratories and on Capitol Hill.''

The president has pressed for passage of an energy bill in Congress. The House this year narrowly approved a "cap-and-trade'' plan to curtail the greenhouse gas emissions of manufacturers and power-generators blamed for contributing to global warming. The Senate now is advancing a plan of its own.

"We are seeing a convergence,'' Obama said. "The naysayers, the folks who would pretend this is not an issue, they are being marginalized... There are those who would suggest that moving to clean energy will destroy our economy.... We're going to have to work on those folks.

"But understand that there is also another myth that we are going to have to dispel... That's the idea that there's nothing or little that we can do. It's pessimism.''

The president also coupled some party business with his trip to MIT: Obama was headlining a campaign fundraising reception for Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick in Boston this afternoon and was planning to join Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) at a fundraiser this evening in Stamford, Conn.

Both Democrats face tough reelection contests in 2010, and can benefit from the president's fundraising power. Obama put that influence to work in New York City this week, raising money for the Democratic Party and for the campaign of a Democratic candidate for an upstate New York congressional seat.

The president also is promoting Democrats in hard-fought governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia that will be decided on Nov. 3 - with the president campaigning this week for New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, and planning to campaign on Tuesday for Virginia Democratic candidate Creigh Deeds.

Yet the fundraisers have tended to highlight some of the troubles the president's party is having in election contests - Deval reportedly having trouble raising the money that he was seeking at this afternoon's fundraiser in Boston, and one of Dodd's opponents in Connecticut, former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon, was running a television ad today criticizing Obama's visit as a 'pat on the back from Washington' which she maintains that Dodd does not deserve. Dodd expected to raise $1 million.

At MIT, the president was getting some demonstrations of another kind of power: Wind and solar energy.

Prof. Marc Baldo was demonstrating his work on luminescent solar concentrators that collect sunlight for solar cells with a promise of cutting costs by employing fewer solar cells than needed before for the same energy.

Prof. Alex Slocom was demonstrating an Offshore Renewable Energy System, which draws excess power from a wind turbine pumping water from the seabed.

Profs. Angela Belcher and Paula Hammond were demonstrating a high-power battery that can be grown using biological processes without toxic materials.

And Prof. Vladimir Bulovic was demonstrating quantum dot lighting, an alternative for light bulbs or fluorescent lights that offers warm lighting.

"This tells you something about MIT - everybody hands out Periodic Tables (of the Elements),'' the president said, holding one up for his audience, with a laugh. "What's up with that?''

Buggy whips Baby, buggy whips! Those new fangled horseless carriage things will never take off. We need to commit to the proven, domestic buggy whip industry!

Let me be perfectly clear about this! I will begin each and every speech from this point on with "There will be Naysayers. These naysayers, the folks who would pretend this is not an issue, they are being marginalized".

At least president Obama is finally getting the big picture - America is not as dumb as he thinks we are. People, Millions of them are begining to either; wear off from the Kool-Aid highs of the campaign or finally getting bored with the campaign rhetoric and realizing there is no change, only talk of change that hasn't happened.

Blaming the last guy is no longer an acceptable excuse except for the sheeple still following the teleprompter's bouncing ball.

If people think the fake outrage coming from the Teabaggers and the Glenn BeckerHeads was bad during the health care debate, wait until we start debating Climate Change and Immigration...

Every single right wing lunatic fringe, Timothy McVeigh wannabe is going to crawl out from under their rocks and try to scar everyone.

Of course these very same knuckle-dragging Repugs didn't have a problem with Bush and Cheney committing war crimes, torturing and spying on us illegally.

The amount of scientific doubt, among scientists in the field, is not nearly so substantial as the big oil loving, flat earther Republicans claim.

Even so, maybe we should take a lesson from Dick Cheney, one of the wingnuts' favorite philosopher/mass murderers. Dick had some like the One Percent test: if there was just a one percent chance of a terrorist risk, the country had to pull out all stops to prevent it.

Shouldn't the same "reasoning" apply to global climate change? If there's just a 1 percent chance that we're destroying the planet and all life on it, shouldn't we take reasonable precautions to prevent it? We are, after all, talking about the entire world as we know it, which in some circles is considered important.

Springfield (see above) is right. Science is all bunk and scientists are all frauds. We don't need to listen to them. Good ole American common sense as espoused by our Conservative political and business leaders is all we need to listen too.

We don't need all that high falutin' book learnin', we just need a few graphs, Rush and the Bible to guide our understanding of complex issues like the climate.

Gary, I've seen that post before. Looks like "a blinkin" posted it about a month ago. Same guy? Under that same blog, the identical post by "Faux Newz" is also there.

http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2009/09/obama_to_un_climate_threat_gra.html

You lefties are freakin' weird. Copy and paste from one blog to another, with no credit to whoever the actual author of the post was. Do you have like a database of talking points or something? Just a suggestion - try coming up with your own ideas and opinions.

Amazing. Obama is going to fund raise for Chris Dodd, and NO MENTION by The Swamp of Dodd's allowing Bank of America, a big Dodd contributor, to write his bank bailout bill? (see http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/laland/2008/06/did-bank-of-ame.html).

NO MENTION of the sweetheart mortgage deal Dodd received for his houses from political allies at Countrywide Bank?

NO MENTION of how Dodd promised to release his mortgage papers a year ago, but never did?

To keep its White House seal of approval, I guess the Swamp has been told it shouldn't mention any of this.

Anyone who believes the leftist media doesn't have a "progressive" political agenda needs to look no further than the fake "yes men" press conference this week where environmentalist wacko's misrepresented themselves as the US Chamber of Commerce for a press conference. As an actual rep from the US Chamber, Eric Wohlschlegel, explains to the obtuse members of the media that they have been victimized by a hoax (just as the MSM has been victimized by the Global Warmi-, er- Global Climate Change Hoax), one of the bobble-headed reporters attempts to quiet him with "...I'm on deadline here." The MSM is a joke. Thank God for Fox; we'd never see half of what is actually taking place behind the scenes.

Eric should have hit them upside the head with their discredited hockey stick graph.

Your all nuts is the climate changing? yes. Has the climate always changed? yes. Now get to work you lazy bums!!!!

If you don't all line up behind the messiah in support of junk science you will be marginalized. Just ask any of the dozens on bozo's hit list.

It is the Chicago way and you will learn to shut the el up. Remember spying on citizens is only bad when repubs do it. Torture is wrong unless the messiah decides it is necessary. In time you sheep will learn who is in charge or else there are some seiu and acorn thugs that will make sure you understand. Facism isn't dead, it just has a new face.

Yeah, and the Earth is flat and Jesus rode a dinosaur....

What else did the big oil companies tell you, Lil Johnny D?

Hans, I'm more worried about the teabagger thugs who bring assault rifles to peaceful political events than SEIU or Acorn. Eventually one of thoise nutjobs is going to use his gun. I'm sure you'll be cheering when they do.

By the way, If Obama hasn't changed anything about torture, why is Dick Cheney so angry about it?

Herbie H: It's the same guy. 2/3 of the lib posts are from gender confused Li'l Johnny Cut & Paste, a.k.a. "Janet," a.k.a. "I wanna be an Idiot," "Faux News," "Gary," "Teabag Alabama," etc...etc...ad nauseum. He spends his life posting on the Swamp and needs both a job and an original thought. His posts all contain the same references, spelling errors, grammatical errors, and poor judgement. He also famously posts under each of our names. Someday, the Swamp will hire him and remove him from the government dole.

30 years of global warming for a planet that is about 300,000,000. I guess BO needs a statistic class.

Why does the Nobel Prize winner on Global Warming, AlGore, turn down every debate offered to him. AlGore should win this debate easy since he has "settled science" on his side and he's a trained debater.

POZNAN, Poland - The UN global warming conference currently underway in Poland is about to face a serious challenge from over 650 dissenting scientists from around the globe who are criticizing the climate claims made by the UN IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore. Set for release this week, a newly updated U.S. Senate Minority Report features the dissenting voices of over 650 international scientists, many current and former UN IPCC scientists, who have now turned against the UN. The report has added about 250 scientists (and growing) in 2008 to the over 400 scientists who spoke out in 2007. The over 650 dissenting scientists are more than 12 times the number of UN scientists (52) who authored the media hyped IPCC 2007 Summary for Policymakers. -12/10/08

Obama expels too much CO2.
Your carbon credits have expired.

This is all rubish! These scientists are trying to say that "global warming" is a fact, when in the last ten years it has actually been cooling off. On top of that, they are trying to compare data which is about as long as a toothpick caompared to a history, which is about as long as a football field! As for Obama and his "grand" and "enthralling" speeches, like Hitler, controlling the media, asking neighbors to spy on one another and report the ones who dissagree with his agenda, it is only a matter of time until America wakes up, and he wont realy be able to pass anything. You see he has to hurry up and pass as much as he can now, because he knows that for the rest of his fascist reign, he wont be able to pass anything at all. As for those who erally and truelly support him, you have lost sight of what America is. It is not a fascist government, and it was originally built to be a small government that did not interfere with everyday life, and thanks to fascist like Franklin Delano Roosevelt ( the guy who was president during WW2 and who created one of the worst money sucking, deficit creating schemes of all time, wellfare and social security ) the government in America started probing deeper and deeper into Americans lives, and Obama wants to do the same thing with this global warming bill and this healthcare bill. I support niether, and I certainly don't support a fascist like him. Hiel Obama!

America has enough recoverable heavy oil trapped in its tar sands in Utah and oil shale in Colorado -- over 2-trillion barrels of oil that would enable us to totally eliminate our need to import the 10-million barrels a day of foreign oil for which we pay over $250-billion a year.

And from what I now know -- we don't have to destroy the environment to extract this oil -- there is a new clean, environmentally-friendly way that does not consume river water, does not burn natural gas and does not produce oil-contaminated effluent waste.

Yes, I am talking about a clean tar sands and clean oil shale extraction technology that solves all the problems of previous heat-based retort and insitu systems that cause more problems and waste vital water and energy resources than their oil is worth.

But this new chemical-based technology uses American ingenuity to solve all those problems that environmentalists objected to — now there is no reason to object.

This is the technology that I am talking about, that I believe can enable America to become energy independent:

No one I know has been able to get oil to do what this can…

See the Videos:

http://encapsol.com/media/ and

http://encapsol.com/tar-sands-and-oil-shale-extraction/

We are running out of time to fix things before the next oil shortages become permanent due to population growth that demands more oil than the world is producing.

By harnessing our homegrown oil shale and tar sands resources -- America can avoid this future energy problem...

What does Bush/Cheney, war crimes and spying on us have to do with climate change? Btw Obama voted for renewing you being spied on. Obama is the same as Bush just a new face. If in doubt look at Afghanistan, Obama reeks of LBJ.

The problem with convincing many people global warming is an issue is scientists. The same people who told everyone the dread and doom of global warming was real are now reversing themselves. These actions hardly lend credence to the global warming argument.

Another problem is climatologists are saying the earth is headed into a 100 year cooling trend. This of course adds fodder to the "global warming is bunk" fire.

There is no doubt our emissions have had an negative impact on the earth, to what extent is anyone's guess. With all the conflicting information available to everyone and scientists back pedaling on their initial theories or contradicting one another it's difficult to convince many this could, in fact, be a reality.

All of the above being said I believe the various powers can make a bigger point with Americans, and everyone else, if we stick to pollution. Pollution is tangible people can see it. Emissions are pollution also and people can see the smog. Drop the global warming rhetoric and stick with pollution. People believe what they can actually see. Ultimately you achieve the same goal and you can negate the naysayer argument.

One more point: People do not like to see individuals like Al Gore babble about emissions then purchase his carbon footprint from Africa. This is not helping our atmosphere. Reducing the emissions from his hog of a property would be more convincing.

And "borrowing" non polluted air from Africa is a joke. People are not blind to this fact. This isn't helping the cause and smacks of idiocy.

To scientists not pundits. The article you cite about massive scientific support for AGW is bogus. The "poll" is not a random sample, but a hand-picked group of believers. The fact that this crap gets published shows how desperate those who will benefit from carbon control are to stop real conversation about global warming.

I wouldn't be too hard on the climate change scientists who are now reversing themselves and saying things are cooling. Many were very clear earlier that the baseline is far too skimpy to reach reliable conclusions. The politicians grabbed a snapshot in time of preliminary results and claimed the debate was over, but science continues to accumulate data and refine its conclusions. More recently, the data is pointing elsewhere.

The survey result discussed in the articla ponked above: "Scientists Agree Human-induced Global Warming Is Real, Survey Says" is not too surprising. The group that massively supports the contention that humans have caused global warming is precisely the group that owes its livelihood to research funding stimulated by global climate hysteria. That correlation is much stronger than that between rising CO2 concentrations and mean global temperature!

Obama's own words; "Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I'm capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers." Jan. 2008.

So was he lying then or is he lying now?

Skeptic, care to find a poll of climatologists that shows that they don't support AGW? The fact is that those who know most about the subject, thopse who spend their lives studying the climate, overwhelmingly agree that Global warming is happening, and that human activity is a major factor.

Shouldn't the same "reasoning" apply to global climate change? If there's just a 1 percent chance that we're destroying the planet and all life on it, shouldn't we take reasonable precautions to prevent it? We are, after all, talking about the entire world as we know it, which in some circles is considered important.

Please show me some evidence that when the earth was warmer and contained much higher rates of CO2 in the past, (and please explain how that happened without mankind) that ALL life on earth was destroyed. Until then, you are just an alarmist fool. And, while you are at it take a look at a LONG TERM graph of earth's temperatures, if you can fin one buried under all the global warming BS, and note that earth has been warming since the last ICE AGE. THANK GOD. In case you haven't thought about it, it's impossible to grow anything in a glacier.

This is for the meatheads on the left:

Global warming started long before the "Industrial Revolution" and the invention of the internal combustion engine. Global warming began 18,000 years ago as the earth started warming its way out of the Pleistocene Ice Age-- a time when much of North America, Europe, and Asia lay buried beneath great sheets of glacial ice.

Earth's climate and the biosphere have been in constant flux, dominated by ice ages and glaciers for the past several million years. We are currently enjoying a temporary reprieve from the deep freeze.

Approximately every 100,000 years Earth's climate warms up temporarily. These warm periods, called interglacial periods, appear to last approximately 15,000 to 20,000 years before regressing back to a cold ice age climate. At year 18,000 and counting our current interglacial vacation from the Ice Age is much nearer its end than its beginning.

http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/ice_ages.html

The "normal" climate for earth is frozen. Lots of ice for Margueritas, but no left coast sunny beach to sip them with, I mean on. Enjoy the sunshine for a few more thousand years leftists.
