President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, and their daughters, Sasha, second from left, and Malia, sat for a family portrait in the Green Room of the White House on Sept. 1 (official White House photo by Annie Leibovitz /via AP)
by Mark Silva
Annie Liebovitz has captured the images of some of the most famous people in the world -- and she has covered Barack Obama before, putting him on the cover of Vanity Fair. Her portrait of the president on inauguration day filled the March cover.
Today, the White House released its first official family portrait of President Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia Obama.
Liebovitz on the job.
The picture was taken on Sept. 1 in the White House's Green Room.
The photographer's relationship with the first family goes back to 2004, when Obama was running for the Senate, Vanity Fair says. She snapped his family at the campaign headquarters, long before he was running for president.

What a great portrait of our First Family, one that America can be proud to have. They have contributed greatly to our national life. President Obama and our First Lady, Mrs Obama have set a fine example of what it means to be real Americans. May they continue to succeed in their roles as President and First Lady and may their children, Sasha and Malia, be allowed to grow up, without the harassment of the press or other invaders of privacy !! Good luck and may God go with you, Mr. President and First Lady, Mrs. Obama and your daughters, Sasha and Malia.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Very nice portrait of the First Family. President Obama has to be proud of his wife and two lovely daughters.

The usual "nonpartisan" Obama profile by the Obama-endorsing Vanity Fair, featuring Annie Leibovitz, big Dem Party and Dem candidate donor.
David Axelrod and the White House endorse this Obama profile.

Ahhhh....Time for the rabid to foam. The "great" Americans who in their sleep, don coonskin caps and Native American wear and storm the boats at bay in the Boston Harbor. They wait for the light...one if by land, two if by their mind. They believe their prevaricators of hate with their calls of Socialism and Marxism, and any other ism that makes them feel they are patriotic. They slice America into sections and label them good or bad depending on their leaning. The problems facing America are not for Americans to decide on, it is the republicans only who know the way, and YOU America are with them or against them. Rest well good patriots....dry the powder, load the muskets and divide America up as you see fit. After all...your track record is impeccable.

But bill r., it's still a nice picture. I always have to spice my pictures up with pretty Latinas and guitars. It's a nice picture.

Wow, Mark, thanks for the Big Breaking News.
How bout this one:
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZTNhZGQxYzVmMjU4NjY3NTIwMWFjMDQ0ZjJlODM0MzA=
"The signal to corporations is equally clear: You might have dealings with a federal behemoth that not only disburses more than $3 trillion every year but is extending its reach ever deeper into private industry -- finance, autos, soon health care and energy. Think twice before you run an ad on Fox.
At first, there was little reaction from other media. Then on Thursday, the administration tried to make them complicit in an actual boycott of Fox. The Treasury Department made available Ken Feinberg, the executive pay czar, for interviews with the White House "pool" news organizations -- except Fox. THE OTHER NETWORKS ADMIRABLY REFUSED !!!!!, saying they would not interview Feinberg unless Fox was permitted to as well. The administration backed down.
This was an important defeat because there's a principle at stake here. While government can and should debate and criticize opposition voices, the current White House goes beyond that. It wants to delegitimize any significant dissent. The objective is no secret. White House aides openly told Politico that they're engaged in a deliberate campaign to marginalize and ostracize recalcitrants, from Fox to health insurers to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. "

I want to go to there. Seriously, I want to be in the middle of an Obama family sandwich.

Of note, Vanity Fair laid off more staff yesterday. Media outlets that fawn over Obama are suffering. Yet, Fox is booming. The Wall Street Journal now has the largest circulation, taking the lead from left-leaning USA Today.
Conservatism is booming (see Gallop for details). The hard-left New York Times is laying off another 150 staff.Hard-left CNN viewership is down 30 percent. Hard-left MSNBC viewership is down 10 percent.
40 percent of Americans now strongly disapprove of Obama versus 28 percent who approve (see Rasmussen). Despite the breathy assertions from the Obama in-crowd, the public is moving away from Obama and the hard left at a very, very rapid pace -- even with Annie's cute family portrait.

No matter what you think of the President's politics, isn't it possible to just look at the picture objectively and see that this is a handsome couple with beautiful children? I wish them the best as a family.

Nice picture. So, did Leibovitz end up losing her house (it was being foreclosed on) maybe the Prez got her hooked up with his program so she could save her house.

Obama dithers and smiles while troops die. Go to the Oval Office, make a decision on Afghanistan and accomplish something, ANYTHING for the American people. This guy needs some intense counseling to get over this extreme narcissim.

It's a beautiful portrait of the first family, one of which all Americans can be proud.

Ok, so the rabid mouth foamers will decide he didn't have time to sit for an official portrait... HOWEVER each and every other president has had a family portrait. I am so sick of people with no respect for the man or his office. Honestly, I hated George Bush I & II, but would have never said so while either was in office. Oh, and how many portraits did they take????
Posted by: NatFrankie | October 23, 2009 2:13 PM
Now now Tom, support is still at 50%, it is just the support is more lukewarm than the hate is.
But seriously, what does approval ratings have to do with official family photo. I'm with kathryn, it's just a nice photo, can't we leave it there and leave the politics to the next swamp article that might, say, deal with his politics?

The slobbering continues yet another day. Coming next an Obama family Halloween, an Obama Thanksgiving rounding it out wirh an Obama Christmas. But no trees in the Whitehouse. We don't want to offend anyone.
Bah humbug!

It never ceases to amaze me that such a huge majority of people who do not choose to support Mr. Obama consistently show it with such childish comments...ignorant and having no substance. They are also the kinds of comments that they would never have made of Shrub (who, I believe, also has the TRADITIONAL family presidential portrait done at least once) when doing the same kinds of thing such as this. Makes me realize more and more that they have nothing real to criticize Mr. Obama for. Ah, well!

I know Annie Liebovitz is supposed to be a great photographer, but the colors in this picture are terrible. The girls should be in pastels and Michelle Obama's dress is too dark on her. It's not flattering to her hair color, eyes and skin tone.

I agree with Kathryn a few posts up. I am not an Obama supporter, but this is a lovely photo.

Cry me a river. While Bush was smiling and playing our men and women were dying in two wars, and the citizens of a great city were drowning.
Posted by: Katrina | October 23, 2009 2:54 PM
I rather see him posing for pictures than being convinced by the right-wingers (religilous!) to send more troops to .
I voted for him to stop all wars, close GITMO, get private corporations in line with existing laws, etc, etc. In summary, all the things Bush didn't do.

Obama what a great President so far. He won in a landslide and is representing his MAJORITY well. To hell with the GOP until they come to the middle they man never win another election again. Fake Bible thumpers and fiscal conservatives that really are cheaters on the wives and kids and spent us into the whole. Yeah, Obama is spending but he is digging us out of the "fiscal Conservatives" mess. More Rush Limbaugh please the more he talks the more he pushes the middle away.

"...on Thursday, the administration tried to make them complicit in an actual boycott of Fox. THE OTHER NETWORKS ADMIRABLY REFUSED !!!!!...This was an important defeat because there's a principle at stake here."
Only a fool would celebrate a bunch of quivering reporters who didn't have the guts to openly defend Helen Thomas or the New York Times during the Bush/Cheney regime, yet who purport to take a principled stance on behalf of Fox. You're surely aware that in the run up to the war--and even during--the press muzzled itself because reporters feared a vindictive, threatening Republican administration. The media well knows that it failed the American people for eight years and deserves no praise for trying to regain the credibility it shamefully surrendered.

To everyone posting negative remarks about this portrait. I feel sorry you found out Santa Claus was not real, when you were still at an impressionable age. I know it hurt you and that nothing in the world seems right anymore. I feel for you and I wish there was something I could do to repair your childhood loss. But alas I can't help. All you have now is negativity and the republican party to console you.
Posted by: oh please | October 23, 2009 3:41 PM
Interesting to note the crazy logic you have to cling to if you are a Republican. Hang on folks, this gets pretty confusing.
So basically Republicans howl and scream that you can't give Food Stamps, Medicaid, and Social Welfare payments to desperately poor people w/o strings attached, but when the Obama Adminsitration tries to attach strings to uber-wealthy national banks who took TARP welfare money they start screaming bloody murder and screech that it is unfair and not legal. So in summary, give money to a person living in a rat infested squalor and you can demand that they jump through hoops to keep getting money but when you make RICH Wall Street executive take a pay cut because they accepted gobs of taxpayer dollars Republicans say "ENOUGH!" and call for Obama's impeachment.

The last time I saw a portait like this was either on display at the Wallmart picture studio or on
the Addams's Family TV show.
The only difference is Gomez Addams is smarter than Barak. Robert Gibbs could be in the photo as Lurch (sounds just like him also).

How can anyone seriously say anything negative about this picture? It's a good family. Good parents and good kids. And, oh my, they live in the White House. There's a switch.
This family makes me proud. Much more than the alternative ever would have.

Posted by: OSD | October 23, 2009 8:00 PM
This First Family is all about hypocrisy. They talk about how everyone else in this country should provide "service" to our fellow countrymen. And then they go fly all over the country and the rest of the world on their frivolous trips. Not to mention all the parties at the White House on Wednesday (Party Day). What a bunch of HYPOCRITES!!! The official portrait should show a fistfull of dollars in each of their hands. The Obamas are the WORST first family to occupy the White House since Jimmy Carter. Thank God they will be voted out in 2012, and then we can have a REAL president. You know, a real Commander in Chief. Not this little man-child who considers himself to be the answer to all the worlds problems, and he can't even get himself to make a decision about anything. And he always has to blame EVERYTHING on George Bush. So what if Bush messed up in a few areas??!! That was then, this is now! Why doesn't Barry start to take responsibility for HIS actions. What a FAKE he is as a leader. He should go back to ACORN and be a Community Agitator again. Michelle could go back to her FAKE job at the Chicago hospital. What a couple of CROOKS those two are. Nuff said.
Posted by: PabloKiks | October 23, 2009 8:12 PM
When will it stop? People criticize Obama's every more.
Nothing he does is right. Nothing Michelle does is right. People constantly show disrespect to his office. These people hate the fact that Obama is POTUS and are too blind to see beyond the color of Obama's skin.

I can't believe you people think this is a great photo!!
As a professional Photographer I have to say this photo is terrible!
The clothing choices, The background, even the lighting is all aweful.almost any photog I know would have done a much better job.
Liebovitz is sooooo over rated
Mr President Obama if you read this give me a call and I will reshoot your Family photo and no charge...

Presidents have posed for portraits many times through good times and bad it's a tradition. I think the president is allowed free time to do as he wishes. How does an article about a portrait turn into the rants about the Obama administration? People are really stretching this one to make a point.

This is actually a horrible photo. The lighting is poor, the door behind them is open and Pres. shirt blends into the dress Sasha is wearing. Mrs. Obama looks ok, but her young daughter's dress is riding up a lot. Malia's eyes are also half closed. Great smiles though. Malia's shadow also falls over Mrs. Obama's face some.
