President Barack Obama acknowledges that, in his own marriage, he and his wife, Michelle, have faced some sensitive "negotiations'' in the past as to who does what, and why - the woman or the man?
He also says that men tend to be "obtuse'' about these matters - and "need to be knocked across the head once in a while.'' He "absolutely'' had to learn to be more sensitive.
As for that all-male basketball game held at the White House recently, however, the president has one word for the notion that it was just another good ole' boy's club in motion: "Bunk.''
As part of a report on women in society that NBC News is making this week, the president was asked about the issue during an interview at the White House.
""When I think about policy, I'm constantly thinking about how can we strengthen families... so that women can thrive,'' he said. "Because I think if women are thriving, then everybody is thriving.''
In his house, it's 3-1: Michelle Obama, first lady, daughters Sasha and Malia Obama, and the president - and, well, the Portuguese water dog.
"I'm surrounded,'' Obama said. "It's me and Bo.''
"Today's Obama family is obviously not typical,'' the president said of the White House's occupants. "Five years ago, six years ago, we were having a lot of negotiations... because Michelle was trying to figure out, OK, if the kids get sick, why is it that she is the one who has to take time off from her job to go pick them up from school, as opposed to me.
"What I've tried to do is to learn to be thoughtful enough and introspective enough that I wasn't always having to be told that things were unfair,'' Obama said.
""There's no doubt that our family, like a lot of families out there, were ones in which the men are still a little obtuse about this stuff,'' he said, suggesting: "You need to be knocked across the head once in a while in terms of making sure that everybody is treated fairly.''
"Look,'' he said, " the truth is that Michelle still had to make sacrifices of the sort that I did not have to make. ''
And what about that game of hoops at the White House court where Obama invited some Cabinet members and several members of Congress recently - including two Republicans.
Some people might look at that , interviewer Savannah Guthrie told the president, and say, "Gosh, there's the old boys club again.''
"I've got to say, I think this is bunk,'' Obama replied. "Basically, the House of Representatives, they have a regular basketball game, and they had wanted to play here at the White House, and we invited them. I don't think it sends any kind of message or signal whatsoever.''

Mark Silva and MSNBC tackle the big issues again, with this hard-hitting interview. A great followup to the article on Michelle Obama's taste in french fries....
We can all trust The Swamp and MSNBC, along with other White House approved media outlets, for the latest political news.

What a bunch of bunk, except for the fact that the messiah needs "to be knocked across the head once in a while."

Enough with the touchy feely pieces on this guy!! His "ostrich" approach to addressing very very serious matters is getting REAL OLD!! And your lack of journalism is enabling him.

Bruce & BDD if you don't like the article, don't read it. My girlfriend doesn't even whine as much as you two!

Wow, some hard cutting "journalism" going on here. Nice puff piece, Silva. Keep up Your Master's work!!!!

Don't like the article? DON'T READ IT. Seriously, it's like you guys are chained to your computer or something. More likely, you're paid by the RNC and you're sitting in an office someplace.

Tom, President Obama's approach to addressing important issues is methodical, which is what we need right now. Flying by the seat of your pants is no way to run the country. I'm sick and tired of rading comments like your. Give the man a break....he's only been in office for nine months.
Posted by: T Bibbs | October 22, 2009 10:56 AM
Here is the question. Whats up with the headline which is totally deceptive. The good thing is at least Michelle was able to partially train him. I still like the President and think he is doing the best he can with the idiots he has in Congress. Next election lets get a who new Congress.

Hey. How about focusing on accomplishing something, anything for the American people? Just nine months into his presidency, Obama has appeared at 23 Democratic fundraisers, including the two he attended Tuesday night. By comparison, George W. Bush attended six political fundraisers and Bill Clinton went to five during their first year in office.
Posted by: ZDerrick | October 22, 2009 11:11 AM
Mr. Bibbs - Methodical? Like when he said we need to get healthcare reform done before the Congressional recess? Just keep apologizing for him...
Posted by: Barry J | October 22, 2009 11:13 AM
This guy clearly craves the sound of his own voice. It's all Obama, all the time. He is mentally ill with a severe form of narcissism. The best thing in the world is to ratchet up the criticism of him. And things like SNL ridiculing him and the Olympic slap in the face are extremely helpful. Obama will destroy this nation to preserve his ego. Dems MUST go in 2010 if this nation is to survive the destruction of Obama and the spoiled children, Marxists and anti-American hacks throughout his administration.

Methodical?
Seat of your pants?
MSNBC stuff there - hit that send button again because no matter how many times you repeat it, it's still nothing but campaign rhetoric coming from a sheeple.

Typical Obama BS. A true man wouldnt care what the woman thought as long as she kept the house clean and her mouth shut.
Posted by: Walking Rush Piece | October 22, 2009 11:23 AM
Can you believe that...he and Michelle had to have "negotiations" on what happens if the kids get sick?
This guy is one chickified wussy and that's why our troops are being killed in Afghanistan.

I'm just wondering if Michelle finally DID figure out why, when the kids got sick, she was the one who had to take time off from her job to go pick them up from school. And whether she figured it out for herself or Obama had to explain it to her. Enlightened man, indeed!
Posted by: SharonD | October 22, 2009 12:06 PM
Hey Jim, I read only the title. That was enough. Besides the comments are always better reading.
Bruce nailed it for my view, sorry you don't agree.
Excuse me while I get back to reading Bernie Goldberg's book...
Posted by: wingnut master | October 22, 2009 12:08 PM
Is this anything like the Bill and Hillary moments?? Wow how "honest" and sharing. How about another fluff piece as in the sealing of obamas college transcripts. This should also be great fiction reading.
Posted by: senator dirksen | October 22, 2009 12:12 PM
People posting should get off their high horse. Your hatred is showing.....every chance you get you Obama bash.....where's your agenda for the past eight years taken us. Leave it to a Black man to have to clean up the mess....yeah I said it. So what!

Julie Jay: You write free-associative silliness like that while accusing Obama of being "mentally ill with a severe form of narcissism"? Quit projecting and go join the LaRouche party.

Can't find out about where things are on health care and the economy but can find out about Barry and the old lady's relationship. Come on Tribune. You lost your creditability long ago when you became a lap dog like CNN for Obama. I might buy a bird so I have a purpose to receive the Tribune home delivery.

Obama dithers, giggles, smirks and flirts while our troops die in Afghanistan waiting for more than 60 days for the king to act. What a disgrace. It's no wonder he's hitting new lows in the polls.
Posted by: Monique | October 22, 2009 1:26 PM
Leave it to a black man to clean up a mess? Talk about being racist Mr. Bibbs. Remember the civil war and how african americans became free? Study your history. One man doesn't change the world people change a nation.

Hey Bibbs: Just like a t.v. program and you have a remote, if ya don't like what you are watching then change the station or turn it off. So you say you are sick and tired of reading comments like Tom's? Too bad. In your case, scroll down, click or close the window or shut your eyes. As far as this story goes: File Under Entertainment. Cha, cha cha.

Sure, there's alot of negotiation that needs to take place in a relationship to make it work. However, when your kids or spouse aren't well, why wouldn't you want to drop what you're doing and go help without feeling imposed upon?
While it seems that the President may be trying to set some sort of an example for everyone, I agree with the others that as President, perhaps his focus should be on some of the more critical issues that are facing this Country, such as the well-being of our troops.
And, it would seem that our First Lady should be willing to support him in any way she can to help him do that because that is why they ran for office in the first place--isn't it?
Should be.

Hahaha! This is too funny. When is the emasculation of the American man going to stop!? In the end it just hurts women and the family. Without a strong family in society the society breaks down which is the downfall of All Empires.
Posted by: Chitown Bears Fan | October 22, 2009 2:24 PM
hey, how about an article regarding obama's wife views on her husband having sex with Larry Sinclair ?
Being the racist that she is, it must gall her to know her husband is homosexual and having sex with white men. I'd bet obama prefers them to her. Which of course doesn't say much about her.
Posted by: worsethanbefore | October 22, 2009 3:02 PM
This is so funny! Here is a puff piece followed by a boatload of negative comments. Do you criticize articles of substance as well or do you stick to the simple stuff? I'm embarrassed to even admit I clicked to read.

After that salsa dance incident with Talia, does anyone really think Michelle is going to let him bring some young, fit, hot sweaty babe onto the basketball court?
Posted by: Nick in Virginia | October 22, 2009 3:37 PM
"need to be knocked across the head once in a while" - One thing you have to say about BHO he knows his place and something tells me he was more than happy to sit in the front row and listen to Rev. Wright after Michelle explained things to him.
No women on the court - he needs a break from the home front, the last thing you need is your preppy buddies watching your old lady slap you around in basketball.
Posted by: Bob | October 22, 2009 4:10 PM
Ah, yes, the 'knock' on men. We can't criticize women, can't criticize minorities, but you can always criticize men.
Even our male-feminist President gets in some public male-bashing. Sorry, but I don't feel the need to have anyone, even the leader of the free world, apologizing for my gender.
Sometimes, Mr. President, when ideas like that pop into your head - LEAVE THEM THERE.

Dear sweet WORSTTHANBEFORE...., you gave up on the whole "birther" thing so now you're going for the homosexual thing???? How low is that?
MONIQUE you need to get some new rhetoric from your neocon bosses. Your buddie king george put those brave boys in harms way when he underfunded and understaffed that war.
Posted by: Fed Up with Righties | October 22, 2009 4:22 PM
Who the heck wants to play basketball with a bunch of women in Congress? For that matter, from what I see of most of the men in Congress they probably don't have any game either.
Posted by: chris | October 22, 2009 4:53 PM
Leave it to the black man? What black man? Obama isn't black. He's biracial and culturally white. Many Hillary supporters noticed his disdain for women on the campaign trail. But women overwhelmingly supported him anyway.
Posted by: Anna Reeder | October 22, 2009 5:04 PM
Awww...it doesn't matter that Obama couldn't plunge a toilet if his life depended on it--all that matters is that we read stories like this about the first not-fully white president.

Men "need to be knocked across the head once in a while?''
So I guess it's okay to assault your spouse as long as he's male. If he'd said the same thing about women, he'd be apologising and begging for forgiveness on the Oprah show right about now.
Posted by: Bob | October 22, 2009 6:22 PM
This just in: males can be insensitive...and our president is a typical male.
I've got to agree with the conservative folks on this one. This article is lame. With two wars, a raging healthcare debate, and executive pay reduction, it would seem there is plenty else to talk about.
Posted by: DHK | October 22, 2009 6:38 PM
Do you suppose he also thinks that women need to be "knocked across the head once in a while"? And were any Republicans invited to the b-ball game? Enquiring minds want to know.
Posted by: Lefty | October 22, 2009 6:48 PM
I voted for and support Obama except for his anti-male bigotry. Let's see what he's done in the area of gender (of which, contrary to his belief, there are two):
As a candidate, he insulted fathers on Fathers Day (esp. black ones); fathers are not abdicating parental responsibilities, they're being eliminated by policies like his and B'way Joe Biden's. His first presidential act was Ledbetter, which he signed spouting feminist-fed mythologies regarding a male/female pay gap due to discrimination. Although he claimed a commitment to "shovel-ready projects" for our physical infrastructure, and although the he-cession job loss is 82% male, he caved in to feminist pressure to spend 46% of the employment stimulus package on women-dominated service fields (which had gained half a million jobs). Although there are thousands of commissions and gov't. programs concerned with the health, education, employment, business, legal, and general well-being of females--and not a single one for males of any age--he created the White House Council on Women and Girls, again spouting fem-inspired nonsense. This week, Maria Shriver comes out with "Woman's Nation," a thinly-disguised, man-hating tome that virtually crows about the demise of the male worker. Barack's response: expounding on his homelife negotiations and knocking men across the head.
Two questions, Mr. President. One, haven't men been knocked around enough under your administration? Two, will Colin Powell run in 2012?
