President Barack Obama, who has pledged to place diplomacy ahead of confrontation and reached out to a skeptical world with offers of mutual understanding, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace today for what the committee called "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.''
"I will accept this award as a call to action, a call to all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st Century,'' Obama said in a Rose Garden appearance today. "This award must be shared with everyone who strives for justice and dignity.''
Professing both humility and surprise in the awarding of a coveted prize, the president said: "I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership...
"To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who have been honored by this prize,'' Obama said, suggesting that the prize has not always "been awarded just to honor specific achievements,'' but also to lend some "momentum'' to the cause of peace.
The White House announced this afternoon that Obama has decided to give the approximately $1.4 million that comes with the prize to charity, though no decision had been made on which charity or charities that will be. The president also plans to attend the award ceremony at Oslo City Hall, in Norway, on Dec. 10.
Obama is only the third sitting U.S. president to win the Nobel Prize for Peace -- President Theodore Roosevelt won the award in 1906, President Woodrow Wilson in 1919.
The president was nominated for the Nobel Prize after just weeks in office, with the award after less than nine months into the president's term a sign that the Nobel Committee is recognizing aspirations for peace over achievements with this award.
In awarding the prize today, the Nobel Committee hailed the president's creation of "a new climate in international politics.''
Ironically, the award arrives at a time when Obama is weighing the recommendation of the U.S. military commander in Afghanistan to deploy tens of thousands of additional troops in a war now eight years old. At the same time, the president, who campaigned with a promise to withdraw American forces from Iraq, is in the process of drawing down forces there, planning to withdraw combat forces by next year and all troops by 2011.
As he left a sun-splashed Rose Garden this morning in celebration of the peace prize, the president was headed today to another in a series of meetings with top-ranking military leaders and national security advisers, as Obama prepares for a long-awaited decision about the way forward in Afghanistan.
"We have to confront the world as we know it today,'' the president said in the Rose Garden. "I am the commander-in-chief of a country that is responsible for ending a war and working in another theater to confront a ruthless adversary who directly (threatens) the American people and our allies.''
The prize recognizes the voiced objectives of a president who campaigned with promises to reengage the U.S. in world affairs and has personally reached out to erstwhile adversaries.
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee, said. "In the past year, Obama has been a key person for important initiatives in the U.N. for nuclear disarmament and to set a completely new agenda for the Muslim world and East-West relations."
The committee was endorsing the American president's "appeal that 'Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges,''' he said.
Yet Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele was quick today to criticize the president's prize.
"The real question Americans are asking is, 'What has President Obama actually accomplished?' Steele said in a statement issued this morning. "It is unfortunate that the president's star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights.''
Accolades flowed from the president's allies.
"I'm delighted at this recognition of President Obama's work to strengthen international cooperation,'' sad Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "It validates the president's approach to tough trans-national challenges such as global warming and the spread of nuclear arms. And it celebrates his steady efforts to improve America's standing around the world.''
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) praised Obama's politics of "hope:''
"By ushering in a period of optimism in American politics, President Obama has become a great source of pride and inspiration for many Americans,'' Reid said, commending Obama for "his dedication to a new type of politics based on hope instead of fear. I am confident that the president will work to continue to live up the ideals of this award throughout his term in office."
""It's a stunning announcement,'' Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D.-Vt.) said, "and it reflects well on America's ideals and the world's yearning for American leadership.
"Little is possible without leadership,'' Leahy said. "No one can force other nations to follow, but President Obama is reintroducing America to the rest of the world, and people of goodwill everywhere do have hope about working together for progress on some of the world's most daunting and dangerous problems."
Obama, who was awakened early this morning with news of the prize in a wake-up call from his press secretary, Robert Gibbs, said: "This is not how I expected to wake up this morning. (After he was informed, his daughter) Malia walked in and said, 'Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is (their dog) Bo's birthday,' and then (daughter) Sasha added, 'Plus we have a three-day weekend coming up.' It's good to have kids to keep things in perspective.''
The Nobel Committee had criticized Obama's predecessor, former President George W. Bush, for engaging n largely unilateral military action in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. With the backing of Congress, Bush quickly invaded Afghanistan and ousted the Taliban, and in spring of 2003 launched a U.S.-led invasion of Iraq intent on removing Saddam Hussein from power.
After awarding the 2002 prize to former President Jimmy Carter, the committee chairman said it should be considered a "kick in the leg'' to the Bush administration's war policies.
More recently, former Vice President Al Gore - who had challenged Bush for election in 2000 -- won the prize for his work on climate change in 2007.
Since taking office, Obama has reached out to the Muslim world with a speech in Cairo in June appealing for understanding between the West and the rest of the world. He has traveled widely abroad delivering a similar message. And most recently he called on the General Assembly of the United Nations to commit all nations to eventual nuclear disarmament.
Calling for "a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world,'' Obama said in his widely viewed Cairo address that "the cycle of suspicion and discord must end.'''
Last month, Obama told the U.N.:"Like all of you, my responsibility is to act in the interest of my nation and my people, and I will never apologize for defending those interests. But it is my deeply held belief that in the year 2009 - more than at any point in human history - the interests of nations and peoples are shared."
Obama also has committed his administration to renewed attempts to broker a lasting peace between the Israelis and Palestinians, with the president endorsing a "two-state'' solution that his predecessor also had supported.
Today, in receiving word of the Peace Prize, Obama said: "We can not tolerate a world in which nuclear weapons spread to more nations.... We cannot accept the growing threat posed by climate change, which could forever damage the world that we pass on to our children... We can't allow the differences between people to define the way we see one another.... We can't accept a world in which more people are denied opportunity and dignity.''
""The exciting and important thing about this prize is that it's given to someone ... who has the power to contribute to peace," Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said.
Nobel laureates Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela congratulated Obama on receiving the prize. And Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, who was favored by some to win the prize, said Obama deserves it.
Tutu, retired Anglican Archbishop for Cape Town, said the award was imaginative and surprising.
"It is wonderful," Tutu told reporters in Cape Town. "He has had a very significant impact. It has changed the temperature and almost everybody feels a little more
hopeful about the world," he said. "What wonderful recognition of someone who has already made such an impact on our planet with regards to the Muslim world, nuclear disarmament, climate change and, to some extent, the Middle East. He has reached out to the Arab world, including Iran, and North Korea."
The Mandela Foundation released a statement saying, "We trust that this award will strengthen his commitment, as the leader of the most powerful nation in the world, to continue promoting peace and the eradication of poverty."
The Nobel committee received a record 205 nominations for this year's prize.
In his 1895 will, Alfred Nobel required that the peace prize should go "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses."
The prize is awarded by a five-member member committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. The committee has taken a wide interpretation of Nobel's guidelines, expanding the prize beyond peace mediation to include efforts to combat poverty, disease and climate change.

Here is a text of the president's remarks in the Rose Garden:
"Good morning. Well, this is not how I expected to wake up this morning. After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, "Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo's birthday!" And then Sasha added, "Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up." So it's good to have kids to keep things in perspective.
I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations.
To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.
But I also know that this prize reflects the kind of world that those men and women, and all Americans, want to build -- a world that gives life to the promise of our founding documents. And I know that throughout history, the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes. And that is why I will accept this award as a call to action -- a call for all nations to confront the common challenges of the 21st century.
These challenges can't be met by any one leader or any one nation. And that's why my administration has worked to establish a new era of engagement in which all nations must take responsibility for the world we seek. We cannot tolerate a world in which nuclear weapons spread to more nations and in which the terror of a nuclear holocaust endangers more people. And that's why we've begun to take concrete steps to pursue a world without nuclear weapons, because all nations have the right to pursue peaceful nuclear power, but all nations have the responsibility to demonstrate their peaceful intentions.
We cannot accept the growing threat posed by climate change, which could forever damage the world that we pass on to our children -- sowing conflict and famine; destroying coastlines and emptying cities. And that's why all nations must now accept their share of responsibility for transforming the way that we use energy.
We can't allow the differences between peoples to define the way that we see one another, and that's why we must pursue a new beginning among people of different faiths and races and religions; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect.
And we must all do our part to resolve those conflicts that have caused so much pain and hardship over so many years, and that effort must include an unwavering commitment that finally realizes that the rights of all Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security in nations of their own.
We can't accept a world in which more people are denied opportunity and dignity that all people yearn for -- the ability to get an education and make a decent living; the security that you won't have to live in fear of disease or violence without hope for the future.
And even as we strive to seek a world in which conflicts are resolved peacefully and prosperity is widely shared, we have to confront the world as we know it today. I am the Commander-in-Chief of a country that's responsible for ending a war and working in another theater to confront a ruthless adversary that directly threatens the American people and our allies. I'm also aware that we are dealing with the impact of a global economic crisis that has left millions of Americans looking for work. These are concerns that I confront every day on behalf of the American people.
Some of the work confronting us will not be completed during my presidency. Some, like the elimination of nuclear weapons, may not be completed in my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone. This award is not simply about the efforts of my administration -- it's about the courageous efforts of people around the world.
And that's why this award must be shared with everyone who strives for justice and dignity -- for the young woman who marches silently in the streets on behalf of her right to be heard even in the face of beatings and bullets; for the leader imprisoned in her own home because she refuses to abandon her commitment to democracy; for the soldier who sacrificed through tour after tour of duty on behalf of someone half a world away; and for all those men and women across the world who sacrifice their safety and their freedom and sometime their lives for the cause of peace.
That has always been the cause of America. That's why the world has always looked to America. And that's why I believe America will continue to lead.
Thank you very much.''

This is a Joke right. The selection of this took place two weeks after he took office. He had done nothing. He disgraces the United States Citizens. Calling us barbarians. Yes he is refering to a select group. But, to European countries, they look to us as a whole. We have become a third world country under this man, and 3 1/2 years cannot come quick enough, At that time, the people will stand and send President Obama, pelosi, and reid, packing. If we are still able to vote, If we still have a Constitution and BIll of Rights. GOD bless us all and keep us safe.

WOW!!! What an honor for our country? I’m sure we can depend on the Republicans to start looking for ways to denigrate this, just like they disparage everything else he does. The clock is ticking for the first Republican idiot to step in front of a microphone and say “The President should not be flying all over the world collecting awards, he has a job to do here. Can’t they fed-x the award to him?” Mark my words, some idiot is going to say something just about that stupid!

What a joke...How could he have won being in office only 2 weeks? Although remember jimmy carter also won their award along with al gore... Enough said...I guess obama losing jobs for america every month counts as peace..ha! The nobel peace prize should be called the nobel dunce prize...

I did not know I was reading "The Onion".

Good grief... for what? This guy hasn't done ANYthing- and what's he's proposing- "a world without nuclear weapons"- is unfortunately not a goal shared by those most likely to use them.
Along with Obama's lack of support for defensive missile technologies... how is this any different than unilateral disarmament /capitulation to Tehran and Pyongyang?
Posted by: Reaganite Republican | October 9, 2009 8:13 AM
Congrats Obama...this will really inflame the rabid. Is there a nobel rabid award?

HUNH?!? I had to double check other papers to convince myself this wasn't a hoax. I love the guy but he hasn't DONE anything yet.

I have absolutely no respect for the committee that awards the Nobel Peace Prize. Obama has done NOTHING to bring about peace or for that matter war. HE HAS DONE NOTHING!
I am still laughing at Al Gore's Global Warming as I await snow this weekend in Chicago.

Another rig job. This dude keeps getting credit for dubious and non-starter 'accomplishments'. He makes G.W. Bush's pronouncement of 'mission accomplished' look like it really happened. A clear cut case of political pandering and providing an award without a nomination; they must have pulled a piece of paper out of a hat to come up with this one; at a time that Obama's agenda is suffering. The world doesn't have to live with this dude's decisions, Amercians do. He seems to have declared 'peace' on the rest of the world and the opposite with the American people; forcing his political agenda on hard working, tax paying citizens. Pathetic development.

I wonder how much that cost us?

I hope this opens peoples' eyes about the growing (and increasingly creepy) cult of personality surrounding this guy.
Posted by: Steve | October 9, 2009 8:30 AM
He did wrongly call out a White cop add then get him to sit down for beers. So he's got that going for him.
The nomination deadline was February 1. this means he had been in office 11 days prior to being nominated. My recollection was that during those 11 days, he was immersed in hiring tax cheaters. I must have missed something.
When Al Gore got his Nobel prize, I didn't think the prestige of that award could sink any lower. Who knew?
Did the IOC vote this?
Posted by: So Many Awards for So Little Done | October 9, 2009 8:30 AM
This is an absolute JOKE. The deadline for submission for this award was eleven days after 'the joker' took office. I guess to win the peace prize you only have to be the world's biggest liberal. Let's see...Al Gore wins by pushing bad science and Obama wins for reasons that so one can clearly say. As they said on SNL, Obama has done nothing as president except give flowery speeches that belittle America. And of course Obama has already said he will go in person to pocket this worthless piece of crap so again he will be partying while our nation does down the drain.
Posted by: Gut Williams | October 9, 2009 8:31 AM
I was about to get all apopleptic after hearing this on the radio this morning, but then I started reflecting on the true nature of what the Nobel prize has become: a political statement of far left-leaning politicians, resentful of America's influence on the world stage.
There have been no accomplishments--only accessions to Russia (at the expense of our East European allies), indecision and weakness in the face of a soon-to-be-nuclearized Iran, and waffling on whether the Taliban and Al Qaeda are "that big a problem." In truth, our foreign diplomacy has been marked by disastrous decision, accompanied by flowery language. Much like President Obama's domestic agenda.
So, it's no surprise, but rather a vindication of what many have been saying all along--President Obama's policies are far, far, far to the left . . . and contrary to our country's long-term best interests.
Posted by: Mister Mike | October 9, 2009 8:33 AM
This announcement hails the complete irrelevance of the Nobel Peace Prize. Jimmy Carter? Al Gore? Now, Barack Obama? What have they done that has advanced the cause of peace anywhere? Carter's promotion of Leftists globally has increased the equality of misery in the Third World. Al Gore's passioned, Junk science promoting Awareness to fallacious Man-made Global Warming is being repudiated by none less than Mother Nature herself. And, even the Left is lampooning the President on his lack of accomplishment since taking office. He's given some speeches, big deal. Listen! Did you hear that? Alfred Nobel just rolled over... What a joke, what a travesty.

The world community wants nothing more than a weak, contrite America. And Obama is more than willing to give it to them. Unfortunately, it is us that has to live with the consequences of Obama -- The constant lying. The staggering arrogance. The dangerous narcissism. The astounding incompetence. Consistently, 50 percent of Americans strongly disapprove of the way he performing as our president. Let's continue to stand strong against Obama in every way and get Congress out of the hands of the insane Pelosi and Reid in 2010. Obama is a smug, smirking con man. Nothing more.

Just WHAT EXACTLY has Nobama done for peace ever in his entire "illustrious" career? Anyone? . . . . Anyone?
Even this trinket won't save his doomed presidency as Teleprompter/Communitee Organizer in Chief.

A great example of affirmative action. Hire/accept/promote/bestow on someone based on a superficial characteristic rather than on true accomplishment. He ought to decline, but he won't.

The president traveled around the world chastising america for being arrogant and the world said thank you by slapping us in the face when they rejected our bid for the olympics on the first vote, dropping the dollar as their back up currency and dictating how we pay our executives, so congratulations the noble piece prize is about as worthless as those stupid pulitzers the media hands out to themselves when they want to feel like they really matter.
Posted by: sammy | October 9, 2009 8:51 AM
What a complete utter joke, the person who should have won it is jailed Chinese civil right activist Hu Jia. Funny how the media has COMPLETELY ignored that he was among the nominees.
Posted by: FLZapped | October 9, 2009 8:52 AM
Are you freakin kidding me?
What is this, a consolation prize for BO losing the Olympics?
This guys has done absolutely NOTHING. This cheapens and degrades the Nobel prize beyond belief.
Posted by: joe | October 9, 2009 8:54 AM
Henceforth, as a result of Obama receiving this award at this time in his presidency, the Nobel Peace Prize will stand for nothing. An Oscar or an Emmy will bear more prestige.
How very sad.

Living abroad, this still comes as a surprise. Upon reflection though, everyone else in the world recognizes that the US and the Obama Administration is willing to talk and be constructive in doing so. If the point of the Nobel is to credit the individual who has done the most for world peace in the last year, Obama is actually a good choice. Instead of being a constant thorn in diplomacy, the US is now an ally, even to its allies. It is a really big change.

Seriously thought I was reading the Onion. I can see Jimmy Carter with his Habitat for Humanity but Al Gore and now Obama?!?! When the likes of Greg Mortenson get overlooked who is by far and wide the greatest inspiration I have ever heard and goes to an 11 day old President due ot some fancy speeches you have to believe the Nobel clan is crooked. I don't want war, death, hunger, no child left behind, maybe I should submit my name.
This is coming from a lefty so don't the rest go slamming the other side for what would be a fair and solid opinion that this is insane.

I am quite shocked to read these comments, Obama getting this prize has nothing to do with americans loosing their jobs, nothing to do with socialism, and as for the global warming, your upcoming snowy weekend goes nowhere in proving Al Gore wrong!
Get your head out of the sand, open your eyes, read what the founder of the peace prize wrote in his testament in 1895: "....and one part to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
The deadline for NOMINATING candidates was in february, the decision as to who wins the prize was made very resent.

Do you people even read the newspaper? The award goes to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses." He has pledged to get troops out of Iraq, close Guantanamo, and open dialogue with enemies. Of course, after 8 years of ignorance, torture, constitutional violations, and greed, all Obama had to do was show up.

His Peace prize must have been for all the work he did in those Violent Chicago neighborhoods just like the Economy if he hadn’t step in and "brought it back from the brink” twice as many CPS students would have killed each other just like we would have lost twice as many job if we didn't waste er um spend over a trillion bucks or is it for turning global warming around in just months? It’s been pretty chili this year thanks BO

Maybe the Nobel committee should make its statement more directly by awarding "booby" prizes to George W. Bush, among the many other potential nominees.
Posted by: Kenny Bunkport | October 9, 2009 9:28 AM
Dr J, he hasn't actually gotten troops out of Iraq, or closed Guantanamo. He also has nothing to show for his "dialogue" with our enemies. He may yet expand the troop count in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton brokered peace deals in Northern Ireland and Bosnia that have held.

Well, I can almost guarantee that for the last several years, maybe 8-10 people paid attention to who won. So like oprah opening a school in Africa instead of inner city "Hometown", this is a desperate attempt to spark interest in a bygone prize. obama has done nothing to deserve this, now, or 11 days into his tenure.

I guess SNL will have to redo their comedy sketch from "jack squat" to winning an award for which he was never really in the running. This is like the movie "Being There".
Posted by: Fallon | October 9, 2009 9:42 AM
What a JOKE. Al Gore gets a "peace" prize for an error-ridden unscientific screed on his new found religion, global warning (now "climate change" since the earth is cooling), and now BO...for what? Being his wunnerful own self? They have totally lost their minds at the Nobel. This award is an insult to serious winners of the past who really did something like give their lives, risk themselves, commit their entire lives to peace, or even actually do something except give a speech or two, etc. If BO was not so taken with Himself he'd reject it. Total garbage.
Posted by: DK | October 9, 2009 9:42 AM
Events like this just cause more animosity against the President than anything else. It really cheapens what the Nobel Prize is supposed to be all about.
Posted by: John | October 9, 2009 9:43 AM
The nobel peace prize has been a way to make fun of the Americans two years in a row now. Obama joins the ranks of other worthy recipients like Al Gore. Maybe next year I'll win it for being just like Obama and doing NOTHING.
Posted by: G. Mann | October 9, 2009 9:44 AM
Well, that certainly cheapens that award. Now the Nobel Peace Prize has about as much credibility as the Miss Universe pageant.
Posted by: WTF | October 9, 2009 9:44 AM
Apparently, they give Nobel Peace Prizes as consolation prizes if you don't win the right to host the Olympic Games...

" He disgraces the United States Citizens." Then the writer of the comment closes with a 'God bless us all.' He/she has no clue about God! Blessed are the Peacemakers. Obama is a peacemaker. His efforts have been recognized and people who take below the belt shots at him are certainly not Christian.
President Obama has brought honor back to the United States. Pity the bird brains who do not recognize that fact.
Posted by: Kirk | October 9, 2009 9:46 AM
Of course, they awarded one to Al Gore for a Power Point Presentation, so the bar was fairly low....
Two weeks in office, huh? Wow they must have really been desperate for awardees this year.

The Sun Times article actually has a little more info from the people who voted. NONE of them sited actual accomplishments. They gave it to him so he would actually do what he promised. BE PREPARED TO BE DISAPPOINTED, FOLKS.

Maybe reading comprehension is down among some posters, but just because Obama was nominated 2 weeks to the deadline, does not mean that Obama was judged on what he did during those 2 weeks. He could be judged based upon how he conducted his presidency. And surprise, the idea that you can solve some major problems through negotiations (as slow and aggravating as that can be) as opposed to launching wars that kill hundreds of thousands of people that did us no harm - well, maybe the Nobel Committee thought that was a pretty good thing. After all, at this same point in Dubya's first administration, he had ignored the warnings of impending attack, and 3,000 Americans were killed.
Posted by: KXB | October 9, 2009 9:49 AM
Wilbecke,
Obama took office on Jan 20 and the deadline for nominations was Feb 11. Thats barely three weeks. You quote mr Noble " who shall have done the most or best work" What did Obama accomplish in those three weeks to deserve the award? And while we are at it what has Obama accomplished since he took office? I am not a Bush lover I do not agree with everything he did especially the ecomony. As for attacking Iraq and Afganistan we have not been attacked since 9/11 and that is a fact you can not ignore. Remember the dems control both houses of Congress and the White house and still can't pass a single bill because their own party is not even on the same page and that too is a fact you cannot ignore.
Posted by: darryl | October 9, 2009 9:49 AM
"This is a Joke right. The selection of this took place two weeks after he took office. He had done nothing," says JJ.
The nomination occurred two weeks after he took office. The prize was awarded today. That's why it's being reported as news.
Nomination versus selection. A subtle difference worth noting.
Posted by: Scarzo | October 9, 2009 9:51 AM
What a joke! What has he done? Bush liberated over 30 million Iraqis from a violent dictator while Obama has liberated 50 million Americans from payrolls.
Will they take his shiny medal away when ten years from now it is proven that his apologetic foreign policy paved the way for more worldwide aggression?
This award is now as prestigious as an Espy or a Razzie.
Posted by: Still Laughing | October 9, 2009 9:51 AM
What's the problem. Barry got into Harvard on a quota and now gets a prize. Some thing for nothing welfare anyone? For doing nothing except reading from a teleprompter. Just as welfare takes away form actually having to earn a living this gratuitous pandering takes away from an already declining vale of this award.
Posted by: senator dirksen | October 9, 2009 9:53 AM
no no no no no
You know what? I know he doesn't deserve this. You know he doesn't deserve this.
For those who think he DOES deserve this...why? What did he do that would award him the Noble Peace Prize? Have you seen the list of previous winners? (http://nobelprizes.com/nobel/peace/peace.html) MLK Jr. The guy who founded the Red Cross. People who have gotten their hands dirty and did actual WORK to accomplish their goals. You CANNOT argue with the fact that BHO has not accomplished a whit to do anything to further the advances of peace. As a matter of fact, considering the fact that he's got the "right" all riled up since his election, I'd say it's the exact opposite.

"The committee has taken a wide interpretation of Nobel's guidelines"
Yeah, a wide left.
Posted by: Billius Maximus | October 9, 2009 9:55 AM
1. Is Guantanamo closed?
2. Are we still in Iraq?
3. Are we likely to add 40,000 more troops in Afghanistan?
4. If not, will we ramp up our use of remotely-guided missiles on Pakistani villages?
5. Have near riots broken out in Detroit, where 30% of the population is below the poverty line?
6. Did a student at Fenger HS just get beaten to death with railroad ties for no apparent reason?
7. Did a 20 year-old mother of three just get gunned down in the streets of Chicago?
Sounds like peace is breaking out all over the place.

President Obama won this award because he has succeeded to make a real change in the policy of the United States -- a change from a policy that was exporting evil to the world to a policy exporting peace and stability to the world! Its disgusting and embarassing that you WingNuts show such hatred towards your own President for trying to make a peaceful change. It saddens me to see how fervently people believe this president has accomplished nothing. Change can sometimes be slow when deliberation, collaboration, and rational though are involved. I think it's abundently clear how badly rapid changes damaged the United States and its reputation under the previous administration. I applaud President Obama for all he's accomplished so far in what will hopefully be a very long presidency. He's quelled the financial crisis, restored the integrity of the United States, and has paved the way for constructive diplomacy in the future.

"It's an award coming near the beginning of the first term of office of a relatively young president that anticipates an even greater contribution towards making our world a safer place for all," Tutu said. "It is an award that speaks to the promise of President Obama's message of hope."
Let's see what else is in that list:

- The dog ate my homework.
- It won't hurt, I promise.
and a raft of others.

If you can't appreciate BO's courage to address the issues that prevent us from living in a more peaceful world then you are part of the problem. His willingness and intellect to confront the lack of justice and freedom on our planet and the vision he has on how we might change the situation isn't going to sit well with alot of folks. It's just a vision at this point. And maybe the award is premature. But for those who crave a change, it's huge. And the first step in making a change is acknowledging that a change is needed. If all you haters have is insults, then you got nothin'. You're part of the problem. Shut up.

On the other hand, if he injured his knee playing basketball the same "Americans" would be gleeful.
America did not get the Olympics because America is not loved by the world at this moment.
Obama received the Nobel Prize because he is loved by the world and seen as the embodiment of hope for the future.
Simple as that.

The smart move by President Obama would be to thank the Nobel Committee and decline the award–saying he wants to actually acheive progress before being honored. That would be gracious, humble and smart politics (both domestic and international).
My guess is he does not do that.

Hi everyone, please read up on this a bit more before you judge it. This is an interesting political decision.
"The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons."
The key part: no nukes.
This is the best troll-bait ever for Obama. He's going to shrug and go about his day.

Posted by: BDD | October 9, 2009 10:53 AM
Barack Obama did not win the prize on his accomplishments since election, he won it based on the worldwide attitude shift during and after his campaign. Although we forget here in the States, Obama is enormously popular abroad; his promise of change and subsequent election did so much to change the impression of Americans abroad, in fact they were a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Let's forget about the domestic issues for a moment and relish the fact that we are now closer to our international allies, even our enemies, then we ever have been since 9/11. Through his campaign, Obama opened the door to get some real global work done, and opening such a heavy door won the peace prize. Can you think of someone else who did more to advance the global dialogue and peace process in the last 12 months?

I do believe that 8-10 years from now we will be able to say he as earned this, he has achieved some areas of peace. I really hope for this. But for now, I just can't see much change since 1/20/09.

Hey!! I showed up for work today. Where is my nobel peace prize??
Posted by: Frank | October 9, 2009 10:57 AM
While I think it's ridiculous at this point to award the President the Nobel Peace Prize, I am also struck by:
1. When the US lost the 2016 Olympics last week, the GOP cheered.
2. When the US President wins a Nobel Prize this week, the GOP boos.
Does the GOP love America? I guess only when they are in charge.
Posted by: billp | October 9, 2009 10:57 AM
What a joke.
Obama hasn't completed a year in office - he has no international or national accomplishes yet, outside of getting elected President.
The Nobel Peace Prize has been a joke for a long time.
KIssinger got a Nobel Price for negotiating a "Peace" between North and South Viet Nam and North Viet Nam quickly broke all peace treaty items to do another all out invasion and conquest of South Viet Nam while America was tied up with Watergate.
Some lasting "peace".
Nobel Prizes are now all political, PC, done mostly by idiot PC elites in Western Europe. These countries will soon turn Muslim, and we'll see how these idiot fair then.

Obama is clearly the greatest political figure of our lifetime.
The Nobel Prize is just another indicium of world opinion to that effect.
The Committee no doubt took note of his October 2002 speech in Daley Plaza.
The first of a long line of actions President has already taken already to de-escalate world conflict.
Then a few other highlights.
The Mile High Speech in Denver.
The Philadelphia address on race relations.
The Cairo University address to the Moslem world. (1.57 Billion people apparently were listening.)
The announcement of his nuclear disarmament policy.
Etc.
The record supports the award.
And guess what?
He can win again.

I thought that the DNC response to the RNC's criticism of Obama receiving this honor was absolutely perfect:
"The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists — the Taliban and Hamas this morning — in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize. Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize — an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride — unless of course you are the Republican Party. The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It’s no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore – it’s an embarrassing label to claim."

Answer me this...WHAT? He was elected because of his race, period. Anybody that watched post election coverage may not want to, but must admit this. 9 of every 10 people I saw interviewed spoke of his race first and foremost,
We are still at war, right? We are still in economic strife, righ?. (As a middle class family, I can tell you without hesitation nothing has improved!) Children are dying on our streets, right? The IOC had no hesitation bypassing the USA/Chicago in a heartbeat, right?
So, what honow are you speaking of specifically. Note I asked "specifically". Give us some cold hard facts to support your statement.

Posted by: Hoohah | October 9, 2009 11:08 AM
I'm continued to be surprised at the venom displayed towards our president, especially given that the most vocal considered it nearly blasphamous to rail against a sitting president just a year ago. Why do so many out there want our country to fail? Are we really a nation of war mongers?
Posted by: On Your Left | October 9, 2009 11:08 AM
@Luke Gardner,
Look at when they nominate people for the award... February 1 is the deadline. He had been in office 10 days and he had not started taking about a nuke free world at that point.

What is it about Republicans that makes them fundamentally unable to be happy for their country when a Democrat is in office? They were giddy when we lost the olympics, and now they're enraged that our president won one of the most prestigious awards in the world.
You people need to grow up.

I am not surprised. The world is desperately looking for hope following the most disastrous US presidency in history which soiled and denigrated United States values to the rest of the world. A world without hope is doomed so I say congratulations, Mr. President. The G-NO-P will be spewing their usual bile toward this announcement since they apparently view diplomacy and US championed world peace as a sign of weakness on the part of the US.

I find it unbelieveable how derogatory people are towards the President of the United States. I never been a fan of President Bush but I would never be so disrepectful towards any President. He became President because he was voted into office, that's how it works in this country!

Wow, the level of hatred here is shocking and upsetting. We are talking about peace here and the reason peace will never be possible is because people like many of you do nothing but hamper and mock any efforts. Do you prefer to live in a country where your every thought is motivated by fear and greed? What have you done today to make this place a better world? And making sure your own interests are taken care of does not count. He and people like him need help, not hindrance.

Obama did not nominate himself.
Nor did he vote for himself.
Others did both.
It is incomprehensible that you haters -- and you are haters -- would find his receipt of this award as a basis to knock him. What irks you folks is there is no Nobel Prize for starting wars based on lies, war profiteering, and proud stupidity. Start your own award. You Republican oafs will finally win something.

It should now be called the Boobel Prize. Boobs awarding it and a boob getting it. He disgraces America, put spedophiles, Communists and tax evaders in his Cabinet, mortgages the future of our children, lets troops die while he goes to help Mayor Chuckie with the Olympic and gives us 9.8% unemployment. Nice.
Posted by: Den C | October 9, 2009 11:50 AM
We all know and Obama knows that he doesn't deserve the Nobel Prize. He said so himself in his news conference (where he gave yet another campaign speech).
Several of us watching agreed that he seemed angry. Angry that anyone would question why he received this award?
We all liked that he refused to say what he'll do with the $1 million cash prize.
Personally, I'd respect him more if after admitting that he didn't deserve it, he declined to accept it.

Posted by: kaye c. | October 9, 2009 12:05 PM
I think this selection is a backlash against Bush and American unilateralism. the same haters were saying Pres. Obama had lost his international luster or currency over the 2016 Olympics are now saying he's the darling of the international community and dishonoring this country by being so. At the end of the day, his GOP right-wing critics especially that "Tom" michael Steele are going to criticize him for whatever he does, whether it benefits the US or not, because, as they plainly said, THEY WANT HIM TO FAIL. And I love how they try to weave his domestic agenda into the criteria for him winning the Nobel Peace Prize while ignoring the obstructionist efforts of the GOP to sabotage it at every turn. Pres. Obama will go down in history as being one of the better presidents we've ever had, when this rampant right-wing ideology is looked at years later as being synonymous with blight on knowledge and truth that defined the Dark Ages.

Of course unilateral disarmament, worldwide apology tours and a massive economic plan to weaken this country will embolden our enemies and garner the support of second tier countries. Socialists around the globe have been cheering this fool on as their own governments begin to recognize the failure of their systems. We just have a little more money to spread around before we fail too. Remember when France calls this idiot an appeaser, he must have really accomplished something. Too bad that winning an award for weakenig our country has recieved so much praise from the mindless followers of the affirmative action figure.

Posted by: Chris R | October 9, 2009 12:11 PM
@On Your Left,
It was never blasphamous to talk badly about Bush; it was de rigueur. It was patriotic. Many of us caught in the middle - moderates, independents and libertarians - are shocked to find out Obama's friends DID matter when it comes to how he is governing. We have taken a step back and recoiled at his revisionist view of America, his wish to emasculate our brand and his rejection of American exceptionalism. We do not want America to fail. That is WHY we now oppose Obama's agenda.
This undeserved award is another indicator that something is very wrong with the way things are going. The weakening of American has garnered praise and prizes throughout the world. This should cause you to pause as well.
It has nothing to do with venom or "blasphemy" - an odd and telling word choice by you, considering the lavish praise, worship and protective cloak given to Obama by the media, community organizers and Union bosses.

Meet the People Who Were Passed Over for Obama
Sima Samar, women's rights activist in Afghanistan: "With dogged persistence and at great personal risk, she kept her schools and clinics open in Afghanistan even during the most repressive days of the Taliban regime, whose laws prohibited the education of girls past the age of eight. When the Taliban fell, Samar returned to Kabul and accepted the post of Minister for Women's Affairs."
Ingrid Betancourt: French-Colombian ex-hostage held for six years.
"Dr. Denis Mukwege: Doctor, founder and head of Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo. He has dedicated his life to helping Congolese women and girls who are victims of gang rape and brutal sexual violence."
Handicap International and Cluster Munition Coalition: "These organizations are recognized for their consistently serious efforts to clean up cluster bombs, also known as land mines. Innocent civilians are regularly killed worldwide because the unseen bombs explode when stepped upon."
"Hu Jia, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of the Chinese government, who was sentenced last year to a three-and-a-half-year prison term for 'inciting subversion of state power.'"
"Wei Jingsheng, who spent 17 years in Chinese prisons for urging reforms of China's communist system. He now lives in the United States."

But, in no way does he deserve this honor. It is one thing to talk about or discuss "peaceful ideas" (closing Gitmo or reducing the troops) but is totally differnent that accompishing those things. And none of that has been accomplished.

Posted by: David | October 9, 2009 12:30 PM
Many posters here seem to have no clue what the Nobel Peace is all about - it is frequently awarded to recipients to support their work, not as congratulations for work that has been accomplished. Should Wilson not have won since the US never joined the League of Nations? Should the Dalai Lama have turned his down until Tibet is free? The Nobel Committee specifically mentioned Gorbachev and Brandt receiving medals for policy changes. Obama's non-proliferation work and speech in Prague last summer is as much of an accomplishment as their work was at the time they received their Nobels.

Obviously the Selection Committee has been smoking the Hopium that Chairman/Dear Leader Barry has been handing out.
The Apologist-in-Chief has done and accomplished NOTHING except make America less safe and weak in the eyes of the world.
But, the Narcissist-in-Chief just got some affirmation that he so desperately craves, especially since the IOC slapped him down hard. Like Stuart Smalley, Barry is saying "People like me".
The Nobel Peace committee just joined the club of the United Nations. The Club of USELESS organizations.

He has changed the discourse of the United States with the World. We have moved from a 'go it alone without dialog' posture to one where we are again a collaborative partner as well as a leader on the World scene. The Prize is an affirmation of that, and a call to continue on this track. The Nobel Committee saw the stark contrast between Obama's approach and that of the Bush/Cheney era and said, with Etta James, "At Last!"

None of these folks probably really wants peace in the world unless they can make it happen by making the military complex impenetrable, and by dropping bombs on anyone else.

political. This man has done nothing to deserve this award by his own admission. What he HAS done is divide the nation even further. Oh, yes he has single handedly ruined our economy. One other thing he has procrastinated about our troop levels in Afghanistan for more than 4 weeks while our good men and women are still dying and being maimed. And this deserves the "Nobel Peace Prize"?
Posted by: Paul | October 9, 2009 1:08 PM
I used to believe the Nobel Prize was awarded for accomplishments, not intentions. Apparently the criteria is the "desire" for world peace. With this new criteria I expect next year's Nobel Peace Prize to be awarded to all of the Miss America contestents.....

All you guys do is complain and bitch about Obama this and Obama that, what has he done to you that Bush didn't start, Hello wasn't Bush the one that started the war ? Or wasn't he the reason Gas went sky high, also he's the reason we lost our jobs and our houses are in foreclosure since Obama came in office I was able to afford school, and make something out of my self you people that talk all this nonsense about one's accomplishments are simply selfish ignorant morons who have nothing better to do but throw your tea partys and juice up prejudice if he had been a White man you would be happy and cheering but because he is black you are talking shit and spreading nothing but hate if you even dare claim to be a christian I cast your sorry asses to hell. Because of Obama your un-employed asses are able to log online and talk and spread this hate, I mean think about all the drama in florida with everything going on Republicans did this to our Country not Obama and if you believe everything the press says you are a stupid fuck, Wake up people wake the hell up.
And yes I'm proud to be BLACK

I have to admit it, yes, indeed, I'm a HATER. Yes, I hate all of you commentators. Don't you have any work to do? Who really cares, it just another excuse for people to disagree. Geez!

I was initially surprised that Obama won this award so quickly after taking office... Then I remembered his first book, Dreams From My Father, (which the naysayers surely haven't read) and all of his work attempting to bring peace and prosperity to the Roseland area. It's with this dedication and tenacity and heart that he has set about repairing world relations and improving America's image abroad.
Our president is a most extraordinarily accomplished man, and the fact that he was elected, as a Black man, in a country that is still trying to shed its racist roots, definitely speaks to his character of bringing people together.
He espouses a belief, that sadly some people in this country (and especially on this board) will never be able to embrace: care for one's fellow man. It's why he became a community organizer, it's is working so hard for healthcare reform, it's why he involves all sides in international policy debates.
To those who would denigrate his award, I ask you: What the heck are you doing that makes you worthy to judge him? Have you done anything to bring about peace in your area? Or do you just sit back and spread negativity on online message boards?
Come on people, this isn't about whether you like his policy or not. This is about the future character of our country. BE YOUR BROTHER'S KEEPER.
We can start where Obama did, on the South Side of Chicago. Mentor the youth, help build public parks and playgrounds, donate to neighborhood organizations, and help to strengthen the community. We all know the area could use some peace.

Having failed to snare the Nobel Peace Prize by ignoring terrorism during his presidency, Bill Clinton decided to intensify his America-bashing on foreign soil after he left office, the method employed by Jimmy Carter to great (if somewhat belated) effect. (The Nobel committee, sufficiently mollified only after 24 years of the peanut president's America-bashing, awarded Carter his 1978 Peace Prize finally in 2002.)
Obama would not make the same mistake. The Carter method took forever to yield the prize for Jimmy and didn't work at all for Clinton; the problem for both was post-presidency timing.
By beginning the bashing before even setting foot in the Oval Office, and by keeping at it relentlessly, Obama assured the Nobel committee that he was their man in Washington.
Conversely, by awarding the prize to Obama at the beginning of his presidency, the Nobel committee is assured of at least 3 1/2 years of Obama proving they were right.

I have seen a lot of posts stating that you aren't a patriot if you don't love this award going to Obama and that the GOP/anyone who doesn't like Obama's politics and recognize he doesn't deserve this award are, get this, terrorists. If you aren't for the public option you are a racist. If you tell the truth and state that Obama doesn't deserve this award you are a terrorist. Amazing. I recall when Regan got shot and the news reported that inner city black kids were cheering. Those kids are now grown and the ones calling people racist and terrorists for telling the truth. Welcome to the brave new world.

I have to say that this is a disgrace for the Nobel Price Committee. All of a sudden it has brought the value of this award many notches down in my mind.
Can someone please explain to me how bending backward to please China (a communist country which is against everything that the humanity stands for, is strategically investing billions of dollars in U.S. economy to have control of it and it is showing that it has control by Obama administrations' actions) is he promoting peace? Please tell me how continuously giving aid to Pakistan, knowing very well that it is being used to promote terrorism, Obama is promoting peace?
I don’t know if this is a public info but who was the largest foreign contributor to his presidential campaign?
P.S. I had been a democrat all my life and voted for Obama.

Someone please inform me what Prez Barry did to promote peace during his 9 months in office that would result in being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize? Re gratuitous Jimmy Carter knocking:
He had ample faults as POTUS. However, he negotiated the Camp David accord which has resulted in peace between Israel and Egypt for the better part of 30 years and counting. Knock him for his economic policies, but give credit where it's due. Oh? I'm sorry. That would require integrity from a Republican, which is impossible not in their rotten DNA.
How many lasting peace deals has the GOParty of Death negotiated? Come up with one and maybe you folks will have someone give you something other than a facetious award.

Or all the jobs he created and saved? What has the man done? Nada!!!! The Nobel Peace Prize means absolutely nothing and is tarnished for giving it to President Hussein. Even Hamas is critical and saying the same thing. I can't believe that even a terrorist organization is criticizing this too. President Reagan should have received this award because he decreased nuclear arms. The cold war ended under George Bush the first, so he should have received it. God will reward their efforts not corrupt and morally bankrupt people here on Earth.

.
“GOParty of Death.” Are you serious? I mean, I’m happily an ex-Republican, but I think that’s a bit over the top.
.
Prior to the Bush family coming to power, Republican’s hadn’t gotten the U.S. into a full scale war since the Spanish-American War in 1896. That’s something the Democrats could never claim.
.
As for lasting peace? Well, peace takes at least two parties to work. In 1905, Teddy Roosevelt brokered a deal to end the Russo-Japanese War. He was awarded the NPP in 1906. That peace held until the end of World War II, when the Soviet Union finally declared war on Japan. It was on Eisenhower’s watch that the armistice between North and South Korea was brokered - after Eisenhower campaigned on the promise to get us out of that war. It was on Nixon’s watch that the Republicans made peace with North Vietnam and got the U.S. out of a war started by Democrats. The U.S. kept its part of the deal; too bad for the Vietnamese. It was also Richard Nixon who opened the door to friendlier relations between the U.S. and China. In 1975, on the watch of Gerald Ford, Kissinger brokered a deal between Israel and Egypt regarding troop disengagement in the Sinai Peninsula. In May of 1988, President Reagan signed the INF treaty with Premier Gorbachev - which eliminated an entire class of nuclear weaponry. Both Reagan and Gorbachev were nominated for the NPP, but awarding it during an election year was apparently deemed too controversial. But I guess a good dose of myopia can make all of this go away in a blink, huh?
.
And, BTW - even when I was a Republican I was happy to acknowledge Jimmy Carter’s efforts at brokering peace in the middle-east. My heart was also warmed by his active involvement in Habitat for Humanity, and his brokering well intended, but ill-fated, negotiations in Haiti. That stuff is all good and well. But it seems to me that he has also undermined his own usefulness and credibility in the interim by his constant rants of “racism” against everyone who doesn’t agree with him. Israel was in his sights a few years ago when he wrote his polemic: “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid.” And just this year, he said that the overwhelming impetus for opposition to Obama by Americans was “racism.” As I said before, I am not a Republican any more. Yet his latest outrage did him in as a credible voice as far as I am concerned.

obama has been awarded the Heisman Trophy. I know, he never actually played in a single game, but he might. Someday. It is to recognize the potential he would have had if he had chosen to play football and devote his efforts there instead of to politics. Later today he will probably get a Super Bowl ring, too.
Hey, you can cast a vote for Obama in the Heisman Trophy race and help Dear Leader get the award!

Great news for America! We were so hated by the international community during the Bush/Cheney years. This is an affirmation that America is seen in a positive light once again. Don't view this as an award for Obama so much as the international community making a strong statement that they support Obama's approach to peace, unity and building relationships and they were appalled by Bush/Cheney's approach to their fear and war, war, war focus. It's a nod that the rest of the world thinks we are moving in the right direction.

John W:
A bit over the top with the "Party of Death, perhaps. But I'm of course referring to: 1) trigger-happy wars of choice; and 2) an unseemly adoration for the death penalty (including complete lack of remorse for executing an factually-innocent man in TX last month).
As for Carter, suffice it to say that many people find the Palestinian situation deplorable. Reasonable minds may differ over whether it is apartheid, but it's certainly in that vein.
Reagan and Gorby: Fine; but ultimately it made economic sense to reduce each side's nuke capacity. I can't recall the stats but basically each side had enough to destroy the world many times over. It made no sense to keep escalating. Besides, you'll recall that USSR was going BK due to a quagmire in a place called Afghanistan. They were in a talking mood. Ronnie gets credit still.

Anthony deserves this award, Winston Churchill deserves this award, and Mother Teresa deserves this award. But no only 9 months in and he hasn’t done anything but spend money and he gets this reward. In my opinion Presidents should not receive this award even Ronald Reagan. Ohh and before you fucking liberals call me a Republican yea I’m not, I’m not a liberal or a conservative, I’m a Libertarian. So screw off! This is a big joke!!! How dare he accept it any one with common sense would know what this award really stands for! People who have changed the world! And him having a dark skin color does not make him a hero... He’s just walking around with a chip on his shoulder feeding off of sympathy for being the ignorant little douche bag he is. he knows he was picked because he was African American, by why the fuck do people not see that MLKJ if anything should be nominated although he is dead we can dedicate the award to him FFS! This is an insult to the world having this. And all the people who defend Obama by saying that he’s only been in for 9 months and he hasn’t done anything... why the hell do you change your story and say he has! So I guess me saying his 700billon dollar research to Global Warming was ridiculous his big spending to businesses that cant make a profit and his 30billion to GM then when they ask for more HE GIVES THEM MORE! HES LIKE A 13 year old who just got their parents credit card and don’t realize he’s spending money he doesn’t have! And he thinks its ok for US to pay for HIM and his teenage girl syndrome ways! SG,
They are the same ones Jimmy Carter identified as the racists who will not acknowledge any of Obama's achievements because he is black (actually, biracial, but they don't draw such fine distinctions).
They complained when he spoke to school children on the first day of school last month.
The rants above are nothing more than pathetic racist projection of their own inadequacies.

Thanks, Jack, and a few others who actually "get it". As a proud Air Force brat and global citizen, having lived and worked abroad beyond my formative years, I can tell you how admired we are a country. Stop and listen a moment, would you? Your fear and hate is blinding the realization of a call to all of us as Americans, through our President, as a figurehead of our nation, that we are on the right track to leading in a global economy. We are all in this together. Obama didn't bring us to the economic issues we are having as a nation. We've brought ourselves here as a nation over decades. And, one man, our President, no matter who it is, is not going to bring us out alone. It's up to us AS A NATION to step up and reimagine ourselves to a better place where we act in the best interest of all concerned, both nationally and internationally, 'cause the global economy just is, it ain't going nowhere. Bring it, people! Make it happen...

Have to love these attacks on someone who in a short 8 months has done more for world peace than most world leaders do in their entire careers. Thanks to Obama Iran is at table negotiating, tensions with Russian have declined greatly and there is timetable in Iraq for withdrawal. He has also started significant new efforts towards peace in the Mddle East and new nuclear arms reduction talks and hs preace efforts in progress in the Sudan.
And who cares when he was nominated? There were 225 nominees including most of the leaders of large nations. That sort of carping is obviously coming from the Birther fringe.
Yes Obama has much work to do. But since when was the Nobel Peace Prize awarded only after everything in process ha been accomplished?

But there is a major difference between claiming “some” racism is direct at the President and saying, as Carter Claimed, that “an OVERWHELMING PORTION of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man …” The first is an obvious but unfortunate fact. The second is not only a gross distortion of reality, but also an attempt to shame people into silence who have legitimate gripes against the way Obama is running things. In case you forgot, Obama wouldn’t have been elected were it not for support from all ethnic and socio-economic groups in this country.
.
And then Carter had the audacity to back up the claim, not by investigating the actual motives of people, but by drawing gross generalizations from his experience as a southerner. I’m sorry, but the fact I have 32 teeth doesn’t qualify me to be a dentist. By the same token, being a southerner doesn’t give Carter the ability to judge men’s hearts.
.
BTW - I hope you aren’t misled into believing that the voices heard on this blog represent a true cross-section of the people in this country. I think a lot of people who post here represent some rather extreme positions. At least, I hope they represent what most would deem extreme positions.

I turned on the TV this morning and was greeted with the news that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize. After only a few minutes into the announcement, Joe Scarborough began to mock the committee, and say Obama did not deserve the prize.
The Nobel spokesman explained why President Obama received the prestigious award; “…for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” Those words could not have been said any better.
President Obama has opened diplomatic doors that were slammed shut by the previous administration. President Bush talked diplomacy while systematically isolating us from the rest of the world. President Obama, on the other hand, started his presidency with an announcement to the rogue nations. “…we will extend a hand, if you unclench your fist”, He meant business. Obama visited many of those nations, listening to their concerns, and expressing ours. Those are the kind of things that build bridges, and keep our children out of unnecessary wars. What could possibly be nobler? Congratulations, Mr. President

“He didn't do anything to earn the Nobel Peace Prize” isn’t a question; it’s a declarative statement. So now who’s stupid? (< That’s a question.)
.
And the declarative statement raises a good question. What, in fact, did Obama do to earn the NPP? Most of the other recipients in recent history were involved in brokering some sort of peace deal. In other words, the recipients were rewarded for concrete results. That’s not the case this time. In fact, even President Obama has acknowledged that he didn’t deserve the award for anything he has done. Good for him. Those who adore him too much should follow suit.
.
You comment that the Prize means that those “OUTSIDE the US,” namely “NON-AMERICANS” “NO LONGER HATE US AND WISH WE'D DIE” is plainly hysteria on your part, and hysterically funny to everyone else. In the first place, the award was awarded by a committee of five Norwegians. They represent a relatively small number of people and reindeer. They don’t speak for the whole world. Just go ask the Pakistanis what they STILL think of Obama. In the second place, I hardly think most of the people in the world harbored such animosity against us that they wished we would all die. (I mean, get a grip.) There is a big difference between disappointment and disaffection, on the one hand, and raw hatred on the other. Bush engendered the former from a lot of people, and a lot, lot less of the latter. Obama’s speechifying wouldn’t have gotten us out of this predicament were this not true.

Since when is the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to someone who is "trying" to do good things? Aren't they supposed to have some accomplishments first? I believe this takes away from the honor and respect this award is supposed to represent. I am sure there are many others that deserved this award and should have received it instead.
Posted by: Debbie | October 9, 2009 7:58 PM
I have still yet to see anyone who is in support of the Obama getting this award, site an actual accomplishment that would merit a NPP. I mean seriously, all of the comments are just "don't hate" or "Congrats - Keep up the good work!"
What good work? What has he done to deserve this? "Opened up talks with other nations?" Come on...
If you really think he deserves it, how about giving a real reason?
Actually, it just goes to show. The people that are in support of him really have a hard time thinking at all. It makes sense. They are also the ones who want to get everything for nothing.

I think the Nobel Prize is an honor for the President, he was very gracious about accepting it.

Hunnity, RushCo, Becky, the Cons in general all side with the Palestinians, Hamas, Iran, and the radical Muslims in general; BHO doesn't deserve it!
Meanwhile, attack the Norwegians and Europeans, our friends and fellow free nations.
Idiots.

Wow, what's next? I guess Acorn might be up for a Teen Choice award for best advice to a Teen age prostitute? I guess he won the peace prize for ignoring the US Forces commander in the field's request for more troops to help safe guard the rest of the troops in the theatre of war. The world has gone to hell in a hand basket. One could only hope that the Mayians are right and the end of the world comes in 2012. This way we won't have to live with the ramifications of this fools policies.

Peace will never be on this Earth until Jesus Christ returns one day; no man will ever be able to bring peace to this world. Things are only getting worse, and it's all prophesied in the bible. Stop the blind worship of this man who has done absolutely nothing as president except waste our tax dollars and lie about the economy recovering while the jobless rate goes up and up, because he's not going to save this country or anybody. This country might not even survive his first term, because the real economic crash is still coming. He will be voted out of office at this end of this term, guaranteed, if he hasn't been named King of the World by some idiots in Europe before then. I look only to the King of Kings for peace. Glad I know a better life is awaiting those who follow Him one day, because I'm baffled by the worship of a politician from the Chicago Machine who doesn't know what he's doing, and it has nothing to do with his race. He's half white anyway, so it's pretty lame to cry racism and hatred. I don't hate Obama. I just don't like what he's doing to my country.

Hilarious.

IT IS A GREAT HONOR TO HAVE THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE BESTOWED ON AN INDIVIDUAL WHO LIVES HIS LIFE PROMOTING PEACE AND HARMONY, LIKE JESUS CHRIST DID. REMEMBER, JESUS WAS HANGED ON A CROSS FOR HIS PEACE EFFORTS. HE DID NOT OPEN SCHOOLS, BUT TAUGHT IN THEM, DID NOT PREACH HATE AND TELL JOKES ABOUT WHAT OTHERS ARE NOT DOING, BUT RATHER TALK PEACE AND TRUTH TO ALL WHO WOULD LISTEN. THE KEY IN THE LAST SENTENCE IS ALL WHO WOULD LISTEN. IT TAKES ONE MAN'S WORD TO SPARK A CONVERSATION, WHICH SPARKS A MOVEMENT THAT WOULD CHANGE PEOPLE'S THOUGHTS. PEOPLE'S POSITIVE THOUGHTS WOULD LEAD TO MORE POSITIVE ACTIONS IN THE WORLD. THE MAN DOES NOT NEED TO BUILD MONUMENTS, WAVE A MAGICAL WAND LIKE IN A DISNEY MOVIE AND MAKE ALL OF OUR VERY BAD DECISIONS AND ACTIONS DISAPPEAR IN SECONDS OR DAYS. IT TAKES COURAGE AND STRENGTH FROM GOD TO NEVER GIVE UP ON PUSHING PEOPLE TO BE THEIR BEST (INSTEAD OF RIDICULING EACH OTHER FOR A JOB LESS THAN WELL DONE OR NOT DONE AT ALL), PROMOTE AND DEMAND POSITIVE ACTIONS FROM ALL PEOPLE (NOT YOUR NEGATIVE COMMENTS AND APATHY), AND PURSUE PEACE REGARDLESS OF THE NAYSAYERS. OBAMA HAS DONE AN OUTSTANDING JOB OF THIS (PROMOTING PEACE FOR YOU NEGATIVE COMEDIANS), AND WE AS AMERICANS SHOULD BE PROUD OF THE FACT THAT THE WORLD'S NATIONS ARE LOOKING AT US NOW IN A (WAYYYYYYYYYYYY) MORE POSITIVE LIGHT. THE FACT THAT SO MANY PEOPLE ON THIS COMMENTARY ARE CRITICAL OF HIM RECEIVING THIS AWARD TELLS ME THAT THEY HAVE MORE TO DO WITH THEIR TIME THAN PROMOTE PEACE IN THIS WORLD. YOU NAYSAYERS ARE THE REASON WHY AMERICA IS FALLING, NOT PRESIDENT OBAMA. STOP BRINGING US DOWN WITH YOUR SHORTSIGHTEDNESS, AND START SHOWING AMERICA HOW YOU CAN AND DO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPRINT IN THIS WORLD WITH YOUR CHARITABLE ACTIONS (INSTEAD OF YOUR BLAND, NEGATIVE COMMENTS THAT LEAD TO NOWHERE). JESUS CHRIST WAS KNOWN FOR SPREADING THE WORD OF GOD, NOT BUIDING MONUMENTS AND RAISING AND CLOSING WARS MAN PRODUCED. NO DOUBT, HE WAS THE MOST POSITIVE MAN IN HISTORY, PERIOD. DO AS JESUS DID, NOT AS NAYSAYERS COMPLAIN ABOUT. YOU NAYSAYERS WILL NEVER BE HAPPY WITH OBAMA, REGARDLESS OF HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS. I PRAY HE NEVER LISTENS TO YOU AND GIVE IN TO YOUR WILLS, BUT CONTINUES TO BE THE POWERFUL VESSEL OF GOD, PROMOTING PEACE WHEREVER HE GOES AND LIVING A HOLY LIFESTYLE IN THE EYES OF GOD, IN JESUS NAME, AMEN.

This is a circus. The Nobel Peace Prize lowered its standard. I would think they would need more time, perhaps experience from BO - as an indication that he'd justifiably qualifies and deserving of such a prestigious award. Could there be some shady deal going on? It's hard not to be suspicious of the whole hoopla here.
Posted by: eva | October 10, 2009 1:42 AM
not a demo or a repub. . . . .I am an American and this stinks!!!!! If he were a man of peace he would give this undeserved award back to someone much more deserving. This is clearly a sign post that smacks of 'alternative agenda'. Al Gore, Obama , , , , , c'mon , , , , anyone . . . . black, white brown ,purple, we gain no real satisfaction in that which is not earned . . . . he is FAR from deserving . . . .this nomination among others in the past by the Nobel Group diminishes the award. THAT is a travesty. He should give it back recognizing there are more deserving recipients out there. WOW . . . wow . . . . hard to believe unless you look at the recent winners. What a joke. Na Na Na, Na na na.

"The outrage this has caused among parapalegic conservatives is worth it."
It matters greatly that President Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. It is astoundingly good news. At this point in time the Norwegians made the best possible choice with their decision. This could be the grain of sand that causes an oyster to produce a pearl.
Anything that can help President Obama see his way clear to reverse bait-n-switch course to get us out of no-win Iraqipakighanistan, keep us out of Iran, and TRULY -- I repeat, TRULY -- reverse the course of the last eight years is a good thing. As is, President Obama is only milking left-right tribal dissatisfaction in the US for self-serving political gain.
The 2009 Nobel Peace Prize isn't an 'honor' for President Obama. It's a redeeming responsibility. Hope that he lives up to it.
No, don't just hope he lives up to it, press him to do so. On the day we march out of Iraqipakighanistan the same way we marched in, church bells throughout the US will ring.

Obama has done more than enough to earn the Nobel Peace Prize. A lot of the many things he have not been widely publicized but he has made the world a much better place that's for sure.

The Nobel Prize Committee set a new standard for groups like the Motion Picture Academy, in that an Oscar no longer requires the winner to give a great performance, but intend to give one. The Nobel Prize was once given to people who do something great; while today just saying one wants to do something great is enough to win. The Nobel Prize Committee is trying to shape future reality by recognizing intent to do something they admire, such as equalizing America with the third world. The Oscars could be awarded to actors who never perform, but tell others they would like to. Obama, then, should also be given an Oscar too. Ignorance on display.
Above, I mean.
Not just racism, but also George Bush Sack full of Doorknobs Dumb-ality.
Pamela Hess had the best remark about this award, on C-Span:
Rest of the world, from their perspective, view Obama as a transformational figure.
Above partisan posters are largely sore losers who still can't absorb how bankrupt and smashed their party is.
(Palin regarded as a serious candidate? That's how delusional they are.)
Pamela Hess is right. This award reflects an international view of Obama.
If Americans were smart (a big if) they would welcome this bandwagon effect and use it to the benefit of America.
Rather than, as the haters above, embarrass themselves by displaying their George-Wallace like upbringing and prejudice and their parochialism......
Thanks, Pam......

No one cares a whit about what the head of the Republican National Committee thinks about our President's winning the most prestigious award in the world.
The Republican Party has lost the right to comment on anything that has to do with honour, morals, or anything civilized people engage in honest discourse about.
How they could possibly turn this honour into something wrong is truly amazing, and an indication of how vapid and crass they have allowed themselves to become.

Because of the precedent of awarding for hope and promises, Obama was given the Nobel Prize. Therefore, President Obama should be judged on his promises to end all wars, rid the world of offensive weapons including BB guns and spit ball launchers, reverse global warming, end the global economic depression, jettison racism out of the world, and punish the rich for the audacity of success.
Anything less than success warrants Oslo & Obama to publically admit this ‘choice’ does not belong with the likes of Ivan Pavlov, Sir Alexander Fleming, Marie and Pierre Curie, Harold Urey, Niels Bohr, Enrico Fermi, Francis Crick, James Watson, and Albert Einstein.

To the people who are ridiculing Obama: Does this really reflect a lack of accomplishment in a short time for our President, or does it reflect on your COMPLETE lack of knowlege about world events and world opinion? Remember, the Nobel Peace Prize is NOT given out by America, but by a WORLD committee. The fact is that our President has done more to instill confidence to the world that we are indeed a nation of peace than the monkey that was "president" for the last 8 years. In 8 years (actually the first 4), Dubya managed to alienate almost ALL of our allies. It's too bad that you pathetic Republicans can't take pride itn the fact that OUR PRESIDENT was more worthy of winning this award than any foreign person. Instead, you just hate and ridicule him for being awarded one of the greatest honors any person can hope for. Instead you blame Obama for the problems our country faces because of his predecessor. Typical right-wing nut-jobs.

No, Mr. Big, it's not given out by a WORLD committee. It is given out by a committee of 5 Norwegians elected by the Norwegian parliament. So much for your knowledge of the subject matter.
.
And, no, Barack Obama was not more worthy than any foreigner in winning the award. There are some rather amazing people in the world who actually did something to create peace other than give speeches. Google Piedad Córdoba (Columbia), Wei Jingsheng (China), or Dr. Sima Samar (Afghanistan). These are just three of the people who were also nominated. Many of the nominees worked tirelessly to bring peace and freedom to the world most of their lives, while suffered assassination attempts, imprisonment, and great hardship. Unlike someone we know, none of these other people ordered air and drone attacks that resulted in the loss of civilian lives. To suggest that these people were at all less worthy than Barack Obama for the award is worse than vile.
