We pay the President a salary $400,000 a year. What he does with that salary is up to him. Also, considering the recession I think its nice that the President is showing the American people that we can still invest in our economy through spending. I think it is a good gesture and also a way for him to show that we must continue to keep our economy moving any way we can.

This first couple, by comparison with previous modern first couples, are a lot more public which is both refreshing and worrisome. The efforts the secret service go through to pull an event off, like this, for the Obama's is staggering to think about. There is the massive security of the route there and back, the vetting of all the staff members and probably their immediate family. The food prepared and served to the Obama's was all supplied by the secret service as it is even when the President eats at state dinners abroad. I am also willing to bet the Obama's didn't previously arrange what they would order so there is the probability the secret service provided all the possible ingredients required for the entire set menu.

The first couple live in the White House, they have a professional staff and world class chefs, they could have a romantic and special dinner set up in any of the rooms in the White House. The only reason I can see to have the continual "date nights" out, in various cities, is to be public in the way that celebrities are so narcissistically "public" as an extension of PR.

Don't think for one minute that these "personal" jaunts are entirely paid for by the Obamas. The SS detail, the entourage, the pre-visit security checks, etc, etc are ALL paid for by our tax dollars. I'm not saying for any politician to stay home and not have a personal life but keep in mind the taxpayers are footing the bill. Just as we paid for GWB to fly to NYC after 9-11, we paid for the multiple 747's & 757 + vehicle transport planes used for BHO to fly to Copenhagen this week. Those trips aren't cheap and we pay for them....whoever is President.

Look I'm a Republican and disagree with Obama on most policy issues. But I think it's nice that he takes his wife out--especially for their anniversary--but I'm always ok with it. I don't mind if my tax dollars support the security it takes for him to do it. Family is important. Politics and obviously the Presidency takes a tremendous toll on marriages. If you don't make a concerted effort to protect your marriage it's not going to last. I find it odd that a party that won't shut up about "family values" freaks out every time Obama shows that he has some. It's partisan nonsense. Would Molly or the rest of my Republican friends rather he be spending time with his intern? The Obama's come generally off as a very happy couple who have a very good family, regardless of the fact that he's a miserable excuse for a President. Michelle didn't look happy in the photos - understandable in light of the heat she's taken by people like me for that incredibly narcissistic speech she gave to the IOC. Maybe she's no longer proud of America anymore? Hopefully their marriage *is* in fact strong and can survive their mistakes and the rebukes folks like me give them. Actually, Kent, where did you get your information that they speak weekly? According to McChrystal they had SPOKEN only once in 70 days, NOT MET, but SPOKEN. This was confirmed by many news sources, even the Obama-friendly CBS. Posters also state that the Obama's have plenty of money to spend on their night out. He earned millions on his books, she in a job created just for her and eliminated as soon as she left. You don't begrudge these people their "plenty of money", yet begrudge others. Very selective in who you choose to be rich. You don't begrudge Obama taxpayer use of AirForce One, Pelosi her own 747, etc., yet you scream about CEO's of GM flying down in their corporate jet. Did you know that those corporate jets are used to fly people with cancer and other debilitating diseases to treatment if they don't live near treatment centers? That they are used (or now WERE used, thanks to Obama) to take dying children to their Make a Wish Foundation places of choice. And all for free. No cost to the family. So quick to condemn, yet knowing so little fact.

Regardless of who paid for dinner, our taxpayer dollars paid for the motorcade and the secret service agents it took to escort them to dinner and back. Plus no telling how many tax dollars went to cordon off the streets. Looking at the pictures, they certainly did not present a picture of marital happiness. In the first neither of them is smiling, Obama has his hands in his pockets, and he is walking a good four to five feet behind her. In the second picture they both are very obviously not happy; not one of them touching the other, they are both looking at the ground, and those frowns on their faces are pretty telling. Sometimes pictures tell a thousand words - in this case they speak volumes.

We lost 10 men in Afghanistan and PrezBO spends 25 minutes with the head of our forces there and then sallies off to dinner with a woman who felt representing the US at the IOC was a SACRIFICE. I happen to think that this president is an egotistical, absolute failure, and that his wife is a bitter, unpleasant, solipsistic woman. However, the two of them found each other (arrogance can serve as a magnet?), they got married, had kids, and deserve to spend a night out together for their anniversary.

Obama may be performing horribly, but that doesn't make his job any less stressful. In fact, it probably makes it more so. I see no problem whatsoever with him taking a few hours to spend as a husband to his wife.

And yes, the president does in fact pay for all his own meals, even in the White House. While his salary may be taxpayer-funded (no wonder George Washington, despite being in tremendous personal debt, wanted to do the job gratis), I think it's a little unfair to say that we directly funded the date.

Those of us on the right, a message -- there is SO much else to be concentrating on (like the ten soldiers who died in battle, while the president weighs supporting troops against the political consequences of doing so), so many other failures and problems and signs of corruption ... don't get hung up on a date.

Without using offensive language (which is never productive), Obama for the record does not talk to Gen. Stanley McChrystal on a weekly basis. That is not a FNC statistic. Gen McChrystal sat down with 60 minutes and stated that he had spoken (on the telephone) with Obama once in seven months, since taking command in the region. The second time he spoke with him was for a lengthy 25 minutes on Airforce One. End of story. Michelle Obama does not hold a candle to Jackie Kennedy, no comparison. FLOTUS is mean-spirited, a very unflattering dresser, and in general, the sacrifice that she, Oprah and POTUS made? Quite laughable. Obama is sitting around watching our brave troops die (another ten today) while he goes on television shows: 121 to date. He is doing a very poor job as his approval ratings show. BTW: Bush has been out of office for almost ten months which brings me to my last point; Bush is being blamed by Jesse Jackson and others for OBAMA losing the bid for the 2016 Olympics.

The point you are trying to make no longer seems valid or intelligent when you bring up shallow, meaningless arguments about how the first family looks. But because these ridiculous comments have been made, let me point out that if Michelle Obama is 40 pounds overweight, all of us must be cows. But honestly, what does the way that they look have to do with the way they lead our country? Everytime someone brings their appearance up (in a positive or negative manner) it makes them sound uneducated.

Yes, it's an absolute tragedy that troops are dying in Afghanistan. These are lives that are irreplaceable, and it makes me sick. May I also point out that the "beloved" President Bush sent troops to Iraq years ago -- many of them were killed -- and later it was discovered that Bush wasn't honest about his reasons for our troops being there in the first place?

The bottom line is, extremists would be criticizing President Obama if he had taken Michelle out to dinner, or if he hadn't. If he hadn't, they would say that he was setting a poor example for Americans and wasn't treating his wife right.

The president can go out for dinner and it is on his own tab. Good for him, but the cost for security and the carbon footprint for him to be taken out to dinner makes for another interesting discussion.

He gets taken in his armored limo, with security detail, and caravan. So if one talks about global warming and carbon footprints one would expect a person to lead by example which might mean more catered in and less motorcades to go out.

As to beauty or not, who cares. We shouldn't be electing our leaders via a beauty pageant.

Yes by all means enjoy your night out. 10 more soldiers died but that is okay. You just enjoy your dinner. It's okay that our troops are getting shot and blown up. For ordinary folks, a date night with the spouse to celebrate a wedding anniversary is no big deal. However, think of the cost involved just so those two could spend an hour in the restaurant! I'm sure the WH could have duplicated whatever they had to eat at the restaurant. Furthermore, my spouse and I celebrated our anniversary at home this year because of the horrible economy.
