With the winning of a Nobel Prize for Peace, President Barack Obama will be making a return trip to Scandinavia.

The president plans to collect his award in person in Oslo, the White House said today -- though it's less certain if he will attend the dinner in Stockholm.

Oslo City Hall.jpg

The result of Obama's last trip, to Copenhagen, was less celebratory: The International Olympic Committee meeting there rejected Chiago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, a pitch that the president and First Lady Michelle Obama made in person.

Now that Obama is "a man of peace,'' one reporter asked White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs today -- invoking words that radio's Rush Limbaugh had used rather derisively -- how will he "deal with the fact" that he's now a Nobel Peace Prize winner and thinking of sending more troops to Afghanistan?

"There are actions of necessity that will be and are taken by this country to protect our homeland,'' Gibbs said today, another day of meetings for Obama's war advisers following the president's speech about the prize in the Rose Garden.

"The discussion that will be had today is about a very dangerous region in the world, and there are steps that have to be taken to ensure that we are not attacked and that our allies are not attacked,'' Gibbs said. "Those are steps, again, the president mentioned quite clearly in his speech. Those are steps that he'll make not lightly as commander-in-chief, but he will work every day to protect our homeland.''

A decision on the Afghan deployment may still be "several weeks away,'' Gibbs noted today. That could place it much closer to that presidential trip to Oslo.

The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded at a ceremony in Oslo City Hall (a past ceremony pictured above), in Norway, on Dec. 10, the date on which Alfred Nobel, creator the prize, died.

"The award is so absurd that even leftists have taken note. Ezra Klein wrote: "Obama also awarded Nobel prize in chemistry. 'He's just got great chemistry,' says Nobel Committee." Ana Marie Cox wrote: "Apparently Nobel prizes now being awarded to anyone who is not George Bush." (Powerlineblog)

Of course, I say this before the expected announcement that Obama's also been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Nobel Prize for being the American Politiican Most Resembling a Norwegian Socialist, the Heisman Trophy, the World Series (the 8 teams will step down in his favor), and the Super Bowl.

Another expensive trip to be paid for by taxpayer which will do nothing for the ecomy.

Why Bruce.......calm down. After all, you and your messiah Bush recieved the nobel shoe award.

I can't understand why anyone would be genuinely surprised that Pres.Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, after all it was determined by the same socialist goofballs that awarded it to Al Gore too! Gosh, I can't decide which one deserved it more..?

Here a few people who aren't as important to you as pundits:

Nelson Mandela Foundation
"We trust that this award will strengthen his commitment, as the leader of the most powerful nation in the world, to continue promoting peace and the eradication of poverty."
Muhammad YunusKofi Annan
"It was an unexpected but inspired choice. In an increasingly challenging and volatile world, President Obama has given a sense of hope and optimism to millions around the world."

Afghan President Hamid Karzai
"We congratulate, wholeheartedly, President Obama on the award of this prestigious award. We recognize and commend President Obama's vision and leadership with a hope that peace and normalcy will return to Afghanistan and our region."

French President Nicolas Sarkozy
"It confirms, finally, America's return to the hearts of the people of the world."

Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Soviet leader and 1990 Nobel Peace Prize winner
"I am happy. What Obama did during his presidency is a big signal — he gave hope. In these hard times, people who are capable of taking responsibility, who have a vision, commitment and political will, should be supported."

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen
"I warmly congratulate President Obama on winning the Nobel Peace Prize. President Obama has made extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Martti Ahtisaari, 2008 Nobel Peace Prize winner
"We do not yet have a peace in the Middle East ... this time it was very clear that they wanted to encourage Obama to move on these issues. This is a clear encouragement to do something on this issue. I wish him good luck."

Archbishop Desmond Tutu
"What wonderful recognition of someone who has already made such an impact on our planet with regards to the Muslim world, nuclear disarmament, climate change and, to some extent, the Middle East. He has reached out to the Arab world, including Iran, and North Korea.

In a way, it's an award — coming near the beginning of the first term of office of a relatively young President — that anticipates an even greater contribution towards making our world a safer place for all. It is an award that speaks to the promise of President Obama's message of hope."

Rebiya Kadeer, the Uighur leader who had been tipped for the prize
"I am very happy that he got it. Now he has to do something with the award. It raises expectations on him to stand up for oppressed nations."

Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman
"He has done nothing for peace in Afghanistan ... We condemn the award of the Nobel Peace Prize for Obama."

Mohamed ElBaradei, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency and 2005 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize
"I cannot think of anyone today more deserving of this honor ... President Obama has provided outstanding leadership on moving towards a world free of nuclear weapons."

Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas official
"Obama has a long way to go still and lots of work to do before he can deserve a reward. Obama only made promises and did not contribute any substance to world peace."

Saeb Erekat, a chief Palestinian peace negotiator
"We hope that he will be able to achieve peace in the Middle East and achieve Israeli withdrawal to 1967 borders and establish an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital."

Morgan Tsvangirai, Zimbabwean Prime Minister, who was among those favored for this year's prize
"I wish to congratulate President Obama. I think he is a deserving candidate."

Obama's uncle, who is in Kogelo, Kenya
"It is humbling for us as a family, and we share in Barack's honor ... we congratulate him."

Ali Abkar Javanfekr, a media aide to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
"We are not upset, and we hope that by receiving this prize, he will start taking practical steps to remove injustice in the world. If he removes the veto from the United Nations Security Council, then it shows the prize was given correctly to him."

Shimon Peres, Israeli President
"Under your leadership, you have begun making peace a reality and making it a key issue on the agenda, which must be realized. From Jerusalem I express my confidence that the bells of understanding and dialogue between the nations will start ringing again."

José Manuel Barroso, the European Commission President
"A tribute to President Obama's commitment to the values of peace and progress of humanity. This award is an encouragement for engagement by all those who can contribute to bring about a safer world."

No nothing, bitter un-patriotic, terrorist propagana feeders!

This is OUR President, you should be ashamed of yourselves for not putting your differences aside and be congradulatory for this award is not just for Obama but for our country! Had Bush won for good reason I would be proud of my country regardless of my disdain for the man! You people are shameful and a disgrace to our country! And what makes matters worse is that everything you are saying so are all the terrorist groups around the world. Which shows that you are sympathizing with them! Bravo to you Ingrates. Bravo!

CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT OBAMA AND AMERICA!

Dear President Obama,

How outstanding that you've been recognized today as a man of peace. Your swift, early pronouncements -- you will close Guantanamo, you will bring the troops home from Iraq, you want a nuclear weapon-free world, you admitted to the Iranians that we overthrew their democratically-elected president in 1953, you made that great speech to the Islamic world in Cairo, you've eliminated that useless term "The War on Terror," you've put an end to torture -- these have all made us and the rest of the world feel a bit more safe considering the disaster of the past eight years. In eight months you have done an about face and taken this country in a much more sane direction.

But...

The irony that you have been awarded this prize on the 2nd day of the ninth year of what is quickly becoming your War in Afghanistan is not lost on anyone. You are truly at a crossroads now. You can listen to the generals and expand the war (only to result in a far-too-predictable defeat) or you can declare Bush's Wars over, and bring all the troops home. Now. That's what a true man of peace would do.

There is nothing wrong with you doing what the last guy failed to do -- capture the man or men responsible for the mass murder of 3,000 people on 9/11. BUT YOU CANNOT DO THAT WITH TANKS AND TROOPS. You are pursuing a criminal, not an army. You do not use a stick of dynamite to get rid of a mouse.

The Taliban is another matter. That is a problem for the people of Afghanistan to resolve -- just as we did in 1776, the French did in 1789, the Cubans did in 1959, the Nicaraguans did in 1979 and the people of East Berlin did in 1989. One thing is certain through all revolutions by people who wish to be free -- they ultimately have to bring about that freedom themselves. Others can be supportive, but freedom can not be delivered from the front seat of someone else's Humvee.

You have to end our involvement in Afghanistan now. If you don't, you'll have no choice but to return the prize to Oslo.

I went to Faux News as soon as I heard the news. I just HAD to see the reaction. Chris Wallace was on with the morning clowns. They were beside themselves with Teh Crazy.

Just great to watch them stew. No one there could even pretend like it was a good thing to have our President so honored. Ha Ha Ha!

Slow news day..."nothing big happened". Fixed News Channel was forced to air 75 minutes of uninterrupted live video of a car chase in Dallas. It allowed Fixed News to ignore that Nobel Peace Prize announcement for 75 minutes. I suspect Murdoch is springing for a hot lawyer for that arrested driver just for allowing his propraganda network to ignore Obama for an hour!

A Fox once saw a Crow fly off with a piece of cheese in its beak and settle on a branch of a tree. "That's for me, as I am a Fox," said Master Reynard, and he walked up to the foot of the tree. "Good-day, Mistress Crow," he cried. "How well you are looking to-day: how glossy your feathers; how bright your eye. I feel sure your voice must surpass that of other birds, just as your figure does; let me hear but one song from you that I may greet you as the Queen of Birds." The Crow lifted up her head and began to caw her best, but the moment she opened her mouth the piece of cheese fell to the ground, only to be snapped up by Master Fox. "That will do," said he. "That was all I wanted. In exchange for your cheese I will give you a piece of advice for the future ."Do not trust flatterers."

Well, since Obama has created peace and it is an fait accompli, he should retire.

Seriously, Wingnuts? The President's opponents compare him to Hitler, accuse him of setting up "death panels," of being the anti-Christ, or whatever other batshit crazy thing the right wing lunatic fringe of the day comes up with, while the Republican Party has been obstructing anything and everything he wants to do, but now that Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize things might get ugly? Compared to what?

Maybe... Obama will give the prize money to the city of Chicago to help defray the cost of making an Olympic bid that he so arrogantly blew...Or, maybe he can give the money to Chicago to help stop gang violence...then this ridiculously presumptuous award could actually do some good. Just keep it away from community organizers, the SEIU and ACORN or it will disappear.

Saint Ronnie "Warmongerer/Star Wars/Iran-Contra" Raygun didn't get a Nobel Peace Prize? Boo-freakin'-hoo.

Fallon: A very hungry fox walked into a vineyard where there was an ample supply of luscious looking grapes. Grapes had never looked so good, and the fox was famished. However, the grapes hung higher than the fox could reach. He jumped and stretched and hopped and reached and jumped some more trying to get those yummy grapes, but to no avail. No matter what he tried, he could not reach the grapes. He wore himself out jumping and jumping to get the grapes.

"Those grapes surely must be sour," he said as he walked away, "I wouldn't eat them if they were served to me on a silver platter."

Congratulations to President Obama and the Americans who gave him the chance to be our President !! See you in Stockholm, America.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Sooooo, nominations had to be in LAST February... so he was in office for two weeks when he was nominated.

Whether it's cheering over America losing out on the Olympics or boorishness over Obama's Nobel Prize, or "just say no" over health reform, one party (Democrats) looks like adults in the midst of dealing with difficult problems and the other (Republicans) are acting like petulant children with pencils in their ears so they don't hear anything they don't want to.

You know the people that told us McCain won the debates? Well, events on the ground worked brilliantly for President McCain and Vice President Palin, didn't they? I'm sure our corporate media pundit friends have not forgotten just how well that worked out, as they explain to us that Republicans negative/insane reaction about the Nobel prize and health care proves that Democrats are on the wrong side of the issue yet again.

The Outrage I feel is Right Wing whackjobs is visceral...Do they not understand that this is about America...not just the President.. This is beyond them acting like spoiled children or sour grapes..

This is venal, vile and the Republican party needs to be called out for their unHoly alliance with our enemies (the Taliban, Iran etc) and the crazy right wing religious nuts and gun toters!!!!

Obama’s Nobel price for Peace 2009 :
Thinkers ( Communists in America ; intellectuals in France ) are so worried, desperate about peace issues, wars, unemployment, financial, social crisis, NATO, coalitions, and they are right.
This award is a strong invite to President Obama, to stay calm and serene in the tough times to come.
People are awarded for great things they do; some receive an award to crown their oustanding career.
With this Nobel price, we have got an award for things we are begged to do.
It's a preventive war, kind of, and this one is good for peace.

"Affirmation action"--watch for Republican racist code words like this from now on.

The subtext of most of the negative comments from the doughy white Republican rich guys is that Obama didn't "deserve" this and got it "without doing anything." It will be unimaginable to those who oppose Obama that the Nobel Peace Prize judges could have seen merit in someone the right dislikes so much, so they will be sending out all the coded racist messages so they can to keep their followers angry. Since affirmation action has been one of their hot button issues forever, they’re sure to use it here. It wouldn’t do at all for the low IQ goobers who make up the Republican base to start feeling that Obama might be a worthy person.

I'm really concerned about Republicans and their hurt feelings after this. I'm concerned that their hurt "feelings" are going to end up being the incitement for the shooting of a doctor providing women's health care or that of a guard at the Holocaust museum.

But I guess, thank God none of that has happened yet.

Oh, wait...

CHEERS to wingnut whiplash. What's that little saying about he who laughs last? Gee, I forget. But this I know: today Republicans are wandering around aimlessly in stony disbelief, having learned that, while he didn’t win the Olympics last week (and does anybody really think Rio wasn't going to get it?), Barack Obama did become the first sitting United States President since Woodrow Wilson to win the Nobel Peace Prize this week.

Congratulations, Mr. President and congratulations, America!

And if it makes you feel any better, Li'l Republicans, if the committee ever gives out a Nobel War Prize, you'll win in a walk. (You guys should start a petition...or hold a Tabagger party!)

This political move hurts those who really need the world's attention focused on them:

http://futurenewstoday.blogspot.com/2009/10/chinese-human-rights-advocates-denied.html

You'll never see it reported here, though. If Obreshnev had any real character, he'd have shunted this political move by the committee, declined the award and forced them to do the right thing.

To all of those celebrating that Obama received the Nobel Prize - you are aware of that at the time of nomination he had been in office for TWO weeks?

The internal nomination period ends 1 February.

If he had any integrity he would renounce the Prize.

Yes, man of peace, human rights, brilliance, shalom, shalom, ect, ect.. Congratulations to President Obama. The man who has completely revoked his promise of governmental transparency and continues to debilitate awareness of human rights by standing in the way of bringing to light any and all photographs related to the prisoner abuse committed during his predecessors war. In essence, keeping human rights victims and their treatment in the dark. No excuse is good enough Mr President. Not when you're totting the Nobel Peace Prize. Unless, you believe that such a prize should be awarded to people like Mandela for hiding his own human suffering, and the suffering of those like him, because it might hypothetically incite potential future bad guys. Way to keep the peace at the expense of those who suffered or are suffering. Sort of like a woman who is afraid to show the world her bruises because it might mean more bruises and a lowering of the public image she'd like to present the world of a happy couple. Keeping the problem in the dark, preventing the pubic from witnessing and learning from it, debilitates the domestic violence cause. Instead of the Nobel Peace Prize he should get an Ocsar for his role in Where the Wind Blows.

It should not be much of a surprise really when you consider the other nominees were Robert Mugabe, Osama bin Laden and Moqtada al Sadr

Hmm, judging by the number of "hate-anything-Republican" postings by the obamabots here, I sense a level of insecurity. Seems like even they are not totally convinced that obama should've won this award. But like good little lemmings, they proudly take their marching orders from the HuffingtonPost and blindly defend their messiah.

All hail obama. Afterall, he did manage to raise the dead in Chicago just in time for them to vote democrat.

I recommend that President Obama fly low over the oil fields off the coast of norway in the North Sea.

The oil that the government of Norway allows to be pumped from the ocean allows their people to enjoy the benefits of a socialist state.

President Obama and the Democrats should allow drilling off of our coasts.

Of course he will attend, the guy can't seem to pass up an opportunity to be the center of attention. Must be a childhood issue.

One party would consider an ATTEMPT to bid for the Olympics, Obama's To-Be-Cont. and As-We-Go-Along Nobel Peace Prize, and simpleton solution marketed as "comprehensive reform" of lower the costs by enslaving more people to the same system by law...... far reaching accomplishment by adult standards. That party of preschoolers running our government (Democrats) have a knack for spinning.

Congratulations to President Obama!!!

You leftists that are so frothing at the mouth mad defending Obama's award sound like a bunch of teeny boppers defending Brittney. In fact, I think we should award the Oscar to Brittney Spears just because she's special.

Obama voters couldn't even answer questions about their candidate, they just love, love, love the personality. OBAMA VOTER POLL: http://howobamagotelected.com/research-zogby.asp

71.8% could NOT correctly say Joe Biden quit a previous campaign because of plagiarism (25% chance by guessing)

82.6% could NOT correctly say that Barack Obama won his first election by getting opponents kicked off the ballot (25% chance by guessing)

88.4% could NOT correctly say that Obama said his policies would likely bankrupt the coal industry and make energy rates skyrocket (25% chance by guessing)

56.1% could NOT correctly say Obama started his political career at the home of two former members of the Weather Underground (25% chance by guessing).

Congrats on winning an award based on the merits of NOT being GWB.
By the way, I'm not GWB either, were is my 1.2 Million $. I'll take a check, and I will include several speeches telling you how you need: hope, change, and peace.
Well, I thought we were being "fair". Common I want my award.

President Obama has ignited the "will to good" in the world by extending an Olive Branch to our adversaries, and for this, President Obama has been awarded one of the most Prestigious Awards in the World -- The Nobel Peace Award. For his efforts and courage on a world stage to engage with the enemy, to sit at the table and break bread, to engage in peaceful dialouge with respect, and to extend to our "alleged" enemies an Olive Branch and not a Stick, the GOP jealousy ask -- But, what has he done?

What he has done, in the face of much criticism, as stated above, is to extend an Olive Branch to our adversaries (even to the GOP themselves, although they continue to spit in his face), because only peace can bring peace. He has fostered and ignited the will to good, which in turn, will increase goodwill around the world. In the face of ridicule, President Obama has set the tone and direction toward unity, cooperation and oneness, recognizing our interconnectedness with all nations around the world -- that we are all brothers/sisters and souls of the one Great Life from which we have all originated from. This is a very big deal Indeed because it is a Consciousness change which will change the actions of men on earth. Diane Sawyers called this the "olympic gold for Diplomacy". Well said Diane! And as Newsweek editor Evan Thomas has stated previously -- "In a way Obama is standing above the country, above the world. He's sort of GOD. He's going to bring all different sides together." This is his most holy mission, to unite and bring peace and cooperation throughtout the world.

Of course he will attend, the guy can't seem to pass up an opportunity to be the center of attention. Must be a childhood issue.

I can't believe you think it is a good thing that people look to a man, especially this man as GOD. That's scary. I don't want any man held up as a sort of GOD, or god, leader of the world. That is a recipe for disaster. And please tell me other than some sick delusion, what would make Obama holy? Reverend Wright? The way he underhandedly got his first opponent kicked off the ballot? HE'S A POLITICIAN, A CHICAGO POLITICIAN!

bill,
.
Gary agrees with you. He was responding to angellight’s crackpot post in which angellight accepted the deification of Obama and suggested that Obama has as “his most holy mission, to unite and bring peace and cooperation throughtout the world. (sic)”
.
And you are wrong in suggesting that the “right” or anyone else has put Obama “up there as God …” Obama’s own devotees have done that. angellight is proof of this. A few others around the blog can’t seem to resist the temptation to prop him up on a pedestal or engage in the same kind of sickening hero worship. When other’s jokingly refer to Obama as “the Messiah” or “the ONE.” it is purely out of sarcasm for the weird attitudes of his followers.
.
Also, those who criticize Obama for not achieving enough during his 9 months in office aren’t trying to make a god out of him. Yes, some of them are just being bitter that Obama is in office. Others, however, are critical of his claims and promises that were supposed to do something but didn’t pan out.

We'll see all of you supporters of our President of The United States in Stockholm, in December. I hope by then you will have stopped with your tantrums and name-calling. Whether you like it or not, He is our President, President Obama. Show some pride in the fact that the world thinks enough of our President, and us, to award him such a prestigious honor, don't howl and moan about it !! What kind of Americans, have you become !!? Certainly, not the good, true kind. Your actions and words , tell us something else !!

Don,

Wash out your head gear (for once). The World didn't bestow this award. The award was given out by a committee of five people elected by the Norwegian Parliament. And they only represent reindeer and those crazy enough to stay in a very cold country. Don't believe for a second that this award represents, for instance, what Pakistani and Afghani people who've lost loved ones to drone attacks and air strikes think about Obama as a man of "peace."

"John W "
Your penchant for the trivial, is truly entertaining. We can always count on your dredging up any trivia, the obvious, that will support your slant. I guess it is understandable and someone has to do it, so it may as well be you, " John W " !! You don't seem capable to doing anything but regurgitating facts. So keep all of those reference books near you, there is nothing like a nice dose of trivia, in the morning, to put one back to sleep !!
As for your resentment towards President Obama, don't worry, you will have another chance in 2012, but please, not McCain-Palin, again !! In the meantime, maybe you could get Rush to a rehab, for that Republican-Liberierian tick, he suffers !! Or better yet, get Representative Paul to quit masqueruading as a non-Republican. That dress is getting old and threadbare, not to mention, yikes, transparent !!
In any case, " John W ", please don't stop with the trivia, it really is entertaining !!

Your penchant for idiotic BS is remarkable. Your whole point was based on the premise that the world thinks enough of our President, and us, to award him such a prestigious honor I demonstrated, that, without question, that your premise was false, in that the entire world didnt bestow the award. Then you turn around and call my reply trivial. Don: My reply could only be trivial if your prior post was also trivial.
.
And when it comes to politics, Don, you dont know if youve been snake-bit or powder-burned. Libertarians are not Republicans. Unlike Republicans, Libertarians abhor the offensive use of force to obtain political or social objectives. There are only two members of Congress (both in the House) who have any inclination toward Libertarianism, and both of them voted against going to war in Afghanistan and Iraq. Thats more than you can say for the Republicans or YOUR PARTY. Also, Libertarians believe in the preservation of life, limb, liberty, property and reputation. Thats hardly the case with Republicans, with their illegal wiretapping, kidnapping, prolonged detentions, and torture. (It is also hardly the case with Democrats, with their cavalier attitudes toward the personal and property rights of others.) Libertarians also believe in limited government and fiscal accountability. The same cant be said for Republicans or the Democrats. Both believe in big government and big spending. With all of these glaring differences, Don, its nothing short of amazing that you are too stupid to distinguish between Republicans and Libertarians.
.
WATCH DON SAY SOMETHING STUPID, COMPLETELY STUPID. NOW.
