The Swamp

by Mark Silva

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is having lunch with President Barack Obama at the White House today. Passing a health-care bill isn't the only thing on their plate. So is the economy.

And tax increases -- or, as the speaker calls the repeal of the Bush-era tax cuts -- expiring tax decreases. "We can't afford those'' cuts, Pelosi says. "We never could.''

With unemployment at nearly 10 percent, Pelosi was aked in an interview with CNBC's Maria Bartiromo, 'what is it gonna take to get Americans working again?

"It's going to take a major investment in health care, in energy, in education,'' said Pelosi (D-Calif.) " We know that on a long term basis. On the short term, we're looking at some remedies in the tax code. We're considering... a $3,000 tax credit for-- for hiring. Net operating loss, carry back, appreciate-- accelerate depreciation. A number of initiatives that might be helpful to business.

"Extending the first-time homeowner credit, but maybe expanding that to not just first time home owners,'' she said. " We're talking also about what we're have to do immediately. Expansion of what we did last year in the recovery package, which is extend unemployment benefits and health benefits of COBRA. So that-- people who are-- who've lost their jobs, have some relief or continue to have relief...

"The recovery package that we passed later in January, under President Obama, has had positive results,'' the speaker said. " It has created or saved one million jobs..

"But more must be done. It's not enough to say we saved jobs,'' Pelosi said. " And-- we haven't created enough. And that's why we have to look at the tax code. And-- other remedies that are there for us in the short term.''

Business managers are worried about the "uncertainties'' headed into 2010, Bartiromo suggested - cap and trade, higher health-care costs, higher taxes:

"Will we see higher taxes in 2010?''

"There will be a time when we will hopefully lower taxes because of the comprehensive overview of our tax code.. even the corporate tax,'' Pelsosi said. "But as far as the other initiatives... the climate change and energy investments, as well as health care. They are designed to be job creators. Because they will lower the cost of energy. And lower the cost of health care to businesses.

"We consider the health care issue a competitiveness issue for businesses. They can no longer carry the weight of this. And be competitive in-- in the international economy. And that's why we're hoping-- that with this legislation, we will contain the rising cost of health care. We will make it more affordable for businesses, as well as individuals, and for the government.''

But what about the Bush tax cuts, Bartiromo added, suggesting that allowing them to expire essentially will be a tax increase.

"That wasn't a tax increase,'' Pelosi said. "It is.. eliminating a tax decrease that was there... It was controversial to begin with. It is... a boon to those who have had it for now. But I think that you will see that happen.

"That affects, what? The upper two percent of our population. What we're trying to do is lower... taxes for the middle class, relieve burdens... on business. So that we can be competitive in job creation. And I think you'll see some interesting things emerge-- from the conversations we're having now. ''

What about allowing those tax breaks to expire at a fragile time in an economic recovery, the speaker was asked.

"I don't think many people here see, nor do the American people see those tax cuts at the high end as being job-creating,'' she said. "They don't... think that that's part of the reason we're in the fiscal, the budgetary situation that we're in, because those tax cuts cost money. And... they were... a cost to our budget, without any commensurate impact on the economy for job creation. To return money to the treasury. So, nobody sees those as a job-creator.

"The fact is, is we have to be acting in a fiscally sound way,'' the speaker said. "And we can't afford those taxes. We never could. Those tax cuts.''

When did Jennifer Granholm morph into Nancy Pelosi? She's going to turn the entire country into a federal-sized version of Michigan.

Finally, our leaders are getting it right. Get rid of those tax cuts for the wealthiest few. Let them eat the nonsense they have flooded this nation with, pure bushie !! Now, we can start to fund some of the necessary programs that the Bush&Cheney regime had so underfunded, if not strangled, during those dark, dank years of the Incompetent Duo's Reign of Error !! Let the wealthiest pay their fare share, for the privilege of living in this good country and doing absolutely nothing, but letting their money double and triple, just sitting their in our corrupt Banks !!

So, the "Bush" tax breaks are BAD! but the various sundry of tax breaks for the "Pelosi" crowd are GOOD!

In order to cut taxes for one class, another has to take it in the rear with no reach around or even a kiss. The economy cannot support tax cuts for any class without creating higher taxes for another class. This is economics 101 for dummies and this gal flunks!

This woman talks without saying one verifiable thing. Claims of job creation and retention that have been proven false. Still with the campaign pandering and rhetoric as if the sheeple haven't heard enough of that stuff.

This administration is tanking and she's contributing to the massive and devistating mess being created, all in the name of "Bush is Bad" and "Obama is Good".

The co-architect of 10% unemployment promises more of the same.....

Ummm, Donnie, you might want to rethink that last post. Under Bush's so-called "tax cuts for the evil, filthy, satan-worshiping rich" their percentage share of the tax burden increased every year from 2001-2008, while the bottom 50% of taxpayers enjoyed a decreasing percentage of the tax burden every year during the same period. Sometimes the left-wing talking points just don't line up with the numbers....

I trust Charles Rangel to come up with the fairest way to tax the American people.

I also trust Nancy Pelosi to find the best way to spend the taxes they raise.

I also believe in the tooth fairy.

It's about time that the very wealthy paid the same--and more--taxes than the middle and lower middle group of income earners. The very unpatriotic Bush tax cuts will have earned the wealthy about 1.9 trillion by 2010. It will have cost our country much, much more.

Did Nancy Pelosi say in a July 16, '09 press conf. on Capital Hill something about the proposed tax surcharges for health care--that 'if savings goals are met, the extra money could be used to reduce the deficit'? Was she talking about a new general rev. source????? So, she's for the middle class .....then ..... she's against the middle class?

Anyone see the Obamacare report today that Obamacare will INCREASE health care spending more than the status quo would? Status quo -- health care would increase to $ 4.7 trillion. WITH Obamacare, costs would be $4.8 trillion.

Why? Well, if you insure more people, they're going to use the system, of course. Those of us who never believed in Santa Claus saw that coming from the get-go.

Donnie, you're so predictable. That's precisely the response I anticipated -- evasive and emotional, attacking the messenger instead of actually meeting the substance of the argument. You libs are so easy to tweak. It's actually rather amusing -- a spectator sport after its fashion. And you're one of the star players.

Remember people, when a democrat says the word "investment" it really means taxes!
The uemployment rate is at ten percent, the dollar is being destroyed as the dems, spend, spend and spend more.
The Bush/Cheney days of 4.7% unemployment, positive growth and millions of jobs being created (not saved,ha!) are looking pretty good right now.

" You Lie", is a very appropriate lead-in to a response to your posts. Thank you for letting me know that I have been, at least entertaining !! You made my day !! At least you seem to be living up to your handle, saith Don !! Have a great day, in this great nation of ours !!

Wealthy people pay less income because they shelter their money. Dividend income is taxed at a much lower rate. Numbskull.

"Have a great day, in this great nation of ours !!"

Already on it, no thanks to you commie libs trying to destroy it. You're not worth the cost of the tar and feathers.

Hey Podd - Did you (or Donnie for that matter) even bother looking at the percentage of taxes paid by income?

You all cannot be that dense, can you?

If all the Bush tax cuts are done away with it as Nancy Pelosi wants it will effect all working and taxpaying Americans through increased taxation. One way of making the tax system more fair would be through a straight Flat Tax on income and do away with tax deductions. Unfortunately this will probably never occur because there are too many Special Interest Groups against it and I cannot see either a Democratic or Republican controlled Congress passing it. With a Trillion Dollar plus Deficit and this Administration trying to pass huge ticket legislation such as Health Reform, we all should be ready for much higher taxes. Its coming!

More bad unemployment news today:
"First-time jobless claims reversed a two-week decline, rising more than forecast, the Labor Department reported Thursday in its weekly jobless report.Initial claims for the week ended Oct. 17 were up 11,000 to 531,000 from a revised 520,000 the week before."

ou have to be the silliest piece of work on the planet there Don.

You're staring into the dark and claim to see the light because someone told you so? you heard in on the MSNBC?

Sheesh! Let me hold your hand and walk you thru this. Let's say income is taxed at 10%. You have one person who makes 1 Million annually and another who makes 25K annually. 10% of 1 million is $100,000. 10% of $25K is $2500. So in this example 102500 was collected in tax revenue. The millionaire paid 98% of the tax revenue. Whoo, effin, Hoo! That means nothing. A better example to illustrate how unfair our tax system can be would be Warren Buffet's challenge. His secretary pays a higher percentage of income tax than hedge fund managers. He's offered $1 Million to anyone who can prove otherwise. To date nobody has come forward to claim the $1 Million.

Paulo-- We noticed a big change over three years ago in our home newspaper--two and three pages of Sheriff sales of homes every month or so. We were saying then, "WHAT is going on?" This slide began with Bush using laws from the 1800's to bypass mortgage safety practices, with all the outsourcing, and the trade agreements that saw Americans not manufacture things anymore. This was all good and fine with Bush and his union and EPA evading buddies. The Bush Great Recession began long ago, and quietly--due to Americans thinking THEY did something wrong. It's heart wrenching to think of the shame so many Americans felt and went through, or are going through. Many made bad choices, however, most loss was about the Bush/Cheney gov't practices and laws that failed them. Fast foreward to Paulson clomping up on stage--right after Obama had been elected, but not in office yet--OK, so, Paulson cries that he and Bush need to rape the American people and take TARP billions for Wall Street and many overseas bankers--or else things would be "dire". Scary. And, the Bush jobs? They were mostly in burger flipping and other low paying, service industry jobs, the military, and private contracting firms for his and Cheney's BS made "wars". It was all such a convenient cycle of Bush-created BS for Bush.

What's the death count this week in Obama's Afghanistan and Paistan wars?

Posted by: springfield | October 22, 2009 2:27 PM

springfield the left no longer cares about that and its all Bush's doing anyway.

Let the Bush tax cuts go the way of jobs under Obama and everyone that pays taxes now will buy more. I mean everyone plus a % of people who pay no taxes now will start paying.

Springfield, why do you hate America? Why do you want the terrorists to win? Why do you want to cut and run?

Hey Podd - I'll type this one real slow, as I know you don't read so fast (or so well)...Your example would explain it, if only we had a flat tax rate, but, alas, we do not. Those with higher incomes pay upward of 35%, while those who make less pay 15%. I will not argue with Buffet's challenge, I'm sure that the wealthy are better at finding shelters and using tax-free vehicles, but this further emphasizes my point, even with this sheltering, they are providing the majority of the tax receipts. Hating the rich is not the answer...

Hating the rich is not the answer...

Posted by: Barry J | October 22, 2009 5:31 PM
Too true. Like all real Americans I worship the rich. Everyday I wake up and say "What can I do to make the life of the rich better today? What can I sacrifice so that the rich have a little bit more?" The Rich truly are better than us. We all owe them our gratitude, pour loyalty and our very lives.

Podd,

Dividends are taxed at nearly 50%, I'm not sure what you are smoking. CAn't wait to hear your shallow response.

Guess who is defending that hedge fund manager's tax rate? - UpChucky Schumer

Hey Patriot - Why don't you show me where in my posts I said the rich were better than us or where we need to do whatever we can for them? Don't put words in my mouth...I am very tired of the bashing about the rich not paying their share...what would your idea of "fair" tax rates be?

Call me simplistic and old fashioned, but it seems to me - based on 62 years of life expereince - that Pelosi's referred to "investments" (to save the economy and jobs) are actually things that will COST us taxpayers more.

Is Ms Pelosi going to stnad there before the American people and tell us that we have NOT been investing in education for as long as anyone can remcall? Is it not true that education in America gets bigger and bigger budgets EVERY year? if I am wrong, I hope Ms Pelosi can make me see the light. It seems to me that our collective investment in education for the past 40 years or so has produced zero return on investment. Sure, our kids know all about self esteem, political correctness, benefit form condom giveaways and are educated on how much dope they can be carrying before being charged with a felony. That's great stuff to know I guess, but where is the math skills, the science skills, the reading comprehension levels commenserate to our investment and how come our kids think you can communicate in written form without bothering to use vowels, comas of even caapitalization..

Pelosi is blowing pure smoke out of her pie hole once again - as is her tendency. One can only hope that one day the voters in the San Franciso area will send her packing. But it ain't likely. And that is the tragedy - for us all.

In order to cut taxes for one class, another has to take it in the rear with no reach around or even a kiss. The economy cannot support tax cuts for any class without creating higher taxes for another class. This is economics 101 for dummies and this gal flunks!

Posted by: springfield | October 22, 2009 2:27 PM

Ok, so who then picked up the tab from Bush's tax cuts to the 1% richest people in the US??? Come on, go ahead, say it.. THE MIDDLE CLASS!!!

Pelosi's grasp of economics is as bad as her memory of CIA briefings, apparently. Raising taxes during a recession is the surest way to send this economy over a cliff. People aren't spending much now, imagine how much less they'll spend when Nancy and her congress start confiscating more of the people's hard-earned money. Idiot.

Scott - Thanks for parroting the leftwing "tax cuts for the richest 1%" line again. If you'd bother to look at who is paying the majority of the taxes in this country (please see link above in post from You Lie) you'd be in for a revelation, but I guess it's just easier to ignore the facts (again, so typical) and continue to demonize the evil rich.

"Pelosi's grasp of economics is as bad as her memory of CIA briefings, apparently."

[Chuckle] That's a mouthful. Well said, sir.

Don Fitzgerald wrote:
Oh, how well we can mislead with numbers.

Kind of like "We saved or created _________ jobs this month"?

That argument cuts both ways, my friend. The numbers in the link seem to speak for themselves.

Posted by: Barry J | October 23, 2009 11:26 AM

Um, Barry Right Wing Spin Meister, where in my post do I say anything against the richest people? Where? All I did was question Springfield on who ended up paying for this tax cut. Nowhere in my post do I debate or demonize the rich on how much taxes they already pay NOWHERE. SO it is YOU not me who is being typical Right WIng propagandist by taking my question and twisting it to support your BS rant. Twist and Shout is your motto and you wonder why you keep losing elections? LOL!!!

Scottie,

That's the problem with you and numbers, you just don't get. The tax cuts paid for themselves in a growing economy and actually brought in more revenue.

BTW, the middle class received a tax cut under President Bush , as did all income tax payers. Those pesk facts.

Scot - Where do you say anything about the richest people? Um, how about where you say "Bush's tax cuts to the 1% richest people in the US"? If I'm not mistaken, you tool, that's a pretty clear reference. There is no "twist and shout", just a reminder to look at the tax data (yes, let's use actual data to debate this, not have you call me a right wing propogandist because I don't agree with you) and tell me how much more those in the upper income brackets should pay. What is their "fair share"?

Um, how about where you say "Bush's tax cuts to the 1% richest people in the US"? If I'm not mistaken, you tool, that's a pretty clear reference.

Pea brained Barry, again I'll ask you, where in my statement do I demonize the rich? Please enlighten me. Does stating a fact that the upper 1% got a tax cut equal demonizing them? It may be clear to you that what I said means demonizing those people but then again everything you see in your head is not what it really is. It appears once again that you evaded the question to suit your own empty tool chest!

Terry, under Bus's tax cut at the saem time the median salary rate went down, more Americans fell under the poverty level, more middle class families couldnt afford health care, more middle class incomes fell below the cost of living index. So ya maybe some people benefitted from this tax cut but most certainly not the middle and lower classes of America.

Scottie,

All income tax payers benefitted from the tax cuts. As far as salaries of the middle and lower classes going down - how do you think its working out under BO?

Scot, Scot, Scot, if by "empty tool chest" you mean the data that clearly shows the top earners shouldering a bigger and bigger portion of the taxes, then you are correct, idiot...try again...

Posted by: Barry J | October 25, 2009 12:16 PM

No Barry by 'Empty Tool Chest' I mean your head. I'm still waiting for you to answer my question rather than pussy footing around it. Calling me an idiot because you cant answer my question? Now thats novel.

Jeff,

I think calling her an idiot is giving her too much credit. I think she knows what she is doing, and that is reflected in the way she tellingly answers the questions posed in the interview with such BS. She is lying, and she knows it. She has her own agendum that people wouldn’t find palatable if they knew the truth. She is, and always has been, an anti-market, anti-capitalist who is willing to impose burdens on other people in order to bring about her own vision of society. In other words, she is EVIL.

Heres a small list of Ms Pelosi's accomplishments:

1) the toughest ethics reform legislation in the history of the Congress
2) an increase in the minimum wage for the first time in 10 years
3) the largest college aid expansion since the GI bill in more than 60 years
4) the largest increase in veterans health care funding in the 77-year history of the Veterans Administration
5) a new GI education bill for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
6) energy legislation that raised vehicle fuel efficiency standards for the first time in 32 years

Which of these accomplishments of Speaker Pelosi do you consider evil and burdensome John W?? Get real man. You people on the right have really lost it!

Scot - I'm calling you an idiot based on your misguided idea that only the 1% richest got a tax cut, and it somehow (despite the fact that ALL tax brackets saw a reduction) came on the backs of the middle class. Did they get a bigger reduction? Well, duh, they had already paid a bigger portion of their income...Let me know if there is anything else you need explained, I'm always glad to help...

Posted by: Barry J | October 26, 2009 8:04 AM

BArry Barry Barry, name calling doesnt affect me or the majority of the American people who know how you tip toe around the facts of this tax cut. EVERYONE knows the top 1% benefited the most out of Bush's tax cuts.

The independant Congressional Budget Office reported that middle-income earners paid more taxes while people making more than $1 million paid less. And the biggest benefits went to the top 1 percent of income earners. Families earning more than $1 million a year saw their federal tax rates drop more sharply than any group in the country as a result of Bush’s tax cuts. THis report reinforced the sense that while Mr. Bush’s tax cuts reduced rates for people at every income level, they offered the biggest benefits by far to people at the very top — especially the top 1 % of income earners.

Regarding who paid more taxes overall, your pea brain fails to understand that although the tax cuts for the rich were bigger than those for other groups, and the wealthiest families paid a bigger share of total taxes. BUT that is because their incomes have climbed far more rapidly, and the gap between rich and poor has widened in the last several years.

Economists and tax analysts have long known that the biggest dollar value of Mr. Bush’s tax cuts went to people at the very top income levels. One reason is that two of his signature measures, tax cuts on investment income and a steady reduction of estate taxes, overwhelmingly benefited the wealthiest households.

However you spin it, the bottom line will alwyas be the same. The top 1% benefited the most from this tax cut. No demonizing here just stating the facts. Now shut that hole in your head you call a mouth already!

Scot - Why don't you peruse the following that shows the actual data from the CBO report (not the John Kerry and Democratic party spin) and what happened to actual tax burdens? Yes, the rich got bigger breaks, but none of it came on the backs of the middle class as you keep insisting.

http://www.nationalreview.com/nrof_luskin/luskin200408170858.asp

Scot S. Blakely,

Your little dance is amusing, but give it a rest. The cost of healthcare, which has been increasing for decades for a variety of reasons, has nothing to do with Bush tax cuts. Nor does the so-called "gap between rich and poor":

http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/san-club/#

Any change to the poverty level or cost of living index also weren't caused by giving everyone tax cuts.

Your original statement about the "the middle class picking up the tab for the tax cuts" makes no sense, has been slapped down, and you've been muddying the waters with unrelated "factoids" ever since.
