Several years back, when Saturday Night Live made fun of Democrat Al Gore's plodding debating style in a televised skit between the first couple of face-offs between Gore and Republican George W. Bush, the Gore campaign took notice - they replayed the SNL skit for Gore at his "debate camp'' in Florida.
Gore came back for debate No. 2 with a new persona.
Bush won the election.
Last fall, when SNL spot-on parodied the Republican candidate for vice president, then-Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, not only did ratings for NBC's long-languishing late-night comedy show soar, but public confidence in Palin's ability to serve in the nation's highest offices also started sinking. Tina Fey got a coveted Emmy for her portrayal of Palin.
Palin, and John McCain, lost the election.
Now, SNL is back for its new fall season, and it has a new target which - in the view of at least one editorial writer in Washington - should cause the White House of President Barack Obama to sit up and take notice. When SNL, people "perceived'' to be friendly, "turn on'' Obama like this, the Post's observer says today -- watch out.
"Good evening, and congratulations to Rio for getting the 2016 Olympics,'' Fred Armisen, the troupe's Obama player who has gotten better at his role since the election campaign, said Saturday night, in the opening skit of SNL. "Last year, I was elected with a mandate to bring this country change we could believe in..
"There are those on the right who are angry, they think that I am turning this great country into something that resembles the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany,'' SNL's Obama said. "But that is not the case,. because when you look at my record, it's very clear what I've done so far -- and that is nothing... Nada.... Almost one year and nothing new to show for it.... ''

Look at the "check list,'' Armisen as Obama suggested.
The president said he'd close the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The White House has indicated that it probably won't make the one-year deadline that Obama set. The president campaigned with a promise to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq within 16 months in office - combat forces are on track to leave next summer, all forces by 2011. He said he'd wage a smarter war in Afghanistan.
"I think it's actually worse,'' SNL Obama said Saturday night.
"How about health care reform? Hell no,'' Armisen-Obama said. "The 'Cash for Clunkers' program really stimulated the economy,'' he said. "Unfortunately it was the Japanese economy... ''
Immigration reform? Nope. Global warming? Not yet.
"I killed a fly on TV....'' Armisen-Obama said, alluding to an actual televised interview that Obama held in the White House, where he swatted a fly dead. "I brought a white police officer and a black professor together for a beer,'' he said of the "beer-summit'' at the White House with Harvard's Henry Louis Gates jr. and Cambridge cop James Crowley. "Who else could do that? Oprah.''
The skit handily overlooked the $787-billion economic stimulus bill that Obama signed one month in office, though Republicans complain that it has done nothing to alleviate rising unemployment.
So how close to the bone is SNL's comedy?
"Both President Bush and President Obama promised to change the tone in Washington and they've had a great deal of difficulty doing that,'' says Mark McKinnon, a Republican strategist who had served Bush and was helping McCain - but stood down in the general election because he didn't want to wage a campaign against Obama. " We've seen a lot of dialog that is just outrageous from both the left and the right, in terms of any civility,'' McKinnon said today on MSNBC's Morning Meeting. " I'm afraid that if civility, if it's not dead, it's in the Intensive Care Unit.
Chris Bowers, a blogger with a leftist perspective, said: "Personally I thought a lot more would be accomplished.''
Karen Finney, a Democratic strategist, said on the show today: "I agree... that there is political thuggery going on in our discourse.''
But, she said: "The president has an unprecedented number and complex things on his plate.'' In measuring his success, she said, "Is it a matter of just ticking off a list of issues, or is it really making the best decisions on these things.''
The stimulus, for instance -- we don't know yet if that's been successful. A fraction of the money has been spent so far.
"Yes, the thuggery in the political discourse is one thing,'' said Jonathan Capehart, editorial writer for the Washington Post. But "the president is facing an unprecedented work load, from the economy to two wars to everything else on his plate that need attention now...
"What I found devastating about the Saturday Night Live opening skit, was, remember, that these were people who were perceived to be the president's backers,'' Capehart said of the SNL crew's newest work.
"For them to turn on him like this, and I think actually in a rather effective way, should make folks in the White House at least pay attention to the fact that there are people out there who are concerned that all these things on the president's check list haven't been done.''

So SNL is clever and witty when it lampoons Sarah Palin, but when they dig at the Boy Wonder it's over-the-top and they must be silenced? Is that what you're saying? Just wanted to make sure I have that straight.

Is SNL trying to go after the Glenn Beck crowd with this childish and incredibly un-funny skit? Most folks still like Obama personally AND politically, you know...

Et tu, SNL?
PS to Lorne Michaels - get someone who is better at impersonating The Won. This guy's impersonation of Obumbles is on par with Chevy Chase's impersonation of Gerald Ford.

"Liberalism is..." - Where does the article suggest SNL should be silenced? It merely discusses how influential it can be, and then provides the details.
And this 'plague' business? Really, be a grownup, please. Raise the level of discourse.

I have buyers remorse, not so much for the campaign promises listed above that have not been kept but for other promises made by Pres. Obama.
1) Transparency. Posting bills for the public to read before voting on them. NOT KEPT
2) Lobbyists - Obama promised lobbyists would not run his administration BUT THEY DO! No competition, no free choice, the Wyden-Bennett bill wasn't even let into the house for discussion.
3) Pork or Earmarks - There were plenty in the last stimulus pkg. Obama promised no pork or earmarks but caved in to the good ole boys.
4) Line by Line budget review - Instead of giving the taxpayers a break by getting rid of wasteful programs Obama is growing government so fast our next generation can't support it. College grads are running to Washington DC to get on the taxpayers' payroll.
5) Czars = Cronyism (although this was not a campaign promise, it is amazing the people chosen to be Obama's czars).
The list goes on..........I was hoping that we truly had a President that would protect and serve the people of the U.S. but he is more concerned with his buddies in Chicago and his lobbyist friends. My main concern is there is no one on the political scene that I can believe or trust anymore. We have to change the way Washington does business... We need a brave man/women with a centerpoint compass to clean it up. It looks like it is not Pres. Obama.

@LIAP: Did you read the piece? He refers to the SNL sketch as "rather effective." How could you read that as an anti-SNL article?

SNL can be clever and witty when they lampoon Sarah Palin AND when they lampoon Obama. I was an Obama voter, and still strongly support him (yet acknowledge it has been a bumpy few months). The hallmark of a free society and free press includes the right to mock our leaders, no matter who they are.
While I agree that the skit isn't entirely accurate when it comes to Obama's accomplishments, let's not forget this is Saturday Night Live, not Meet The Press. They aren't necessarily known for their accuracy when it comes to the politicians they mock, nor do I think they really care.
And while I do think that Obama hasn't been without accomplishment during these past few months, I do think the skit hit a nerve, and for good reason. It reminded everyone how frustrating governmental gridlock and inaction can be, and yes, I do lay some of this at Obama's feet, yet would still vote for him again over McCain in a heartbeat.

You confuse intent with ability. That bumbles has facist aspirations and has managed to take over a few car companies and banks is not in dispute. That bumble's chief health care advisor places minimal value, and therefore wants to withhold healthcare, from the young and the old is cause for concern. The positive to all this is the fool has shown his ineptitude with foreign policy, the environment, the economy and any other endeavor requiring more than a teleprompter.

I think the premise that SNL somehow has played a role in the fortunes of politicians is flawed. Do you really think that the American people wouldn't have noticed that Al Gore had a wooden delivery when speaking, or that Sarah Palin is a ditz if SNL hadn't pointed it out? I don't.

Sometime this year, we taxpayers will again receive an Economic
Stimulus Payment. This is a very exciting program. I'll explain
it, using the Q and A format:
Q. What is an Economic Stimulus payment?
A. It is money the federal government will send to taxpayers.
Q. Where will the government get this money?
A. From taxpayers.
Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
A. Only a smidgen.
Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
A. The plan is for you to use the money to purchase a high-
definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy..
Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China?
A. Shut up.
Below is some advice on how to best help the US economy by spending
your stimulus check wisely:
* If you spend the stimulus money at Wal-Mart, the money will go to
China or Sri Lanka.
* If you spend it on gasoline, your money will go to Arabs.
* If you purchase a computer, your money will go to India, Taiwan
or China. .
* If you purchase fruit and vegetables, it will go to Mexico,
Honduras and Guatemala .
* If you buy an efficient car, it will go to Japan or Korea.
* If you purchase useless stuff, it will go to Taiwan.
* If you pay your credit cards off, or buy stock, it will go to
management bonuses and they will hide it offshore.
Instead, keep the money in America by:
1. spending it at yard sales, or
2. going to ball games, or
3. spending it on prostitutes, or
4. beer, or
5. tattoos.
(These are the only American businesses still operating in the US.)
Conclusion:
Go to a ball game with a tattooed prostitute that you met at a yard
sale, and drink beer all day.

Fred Armisen left another Obama campaign promise out of the list:
Windfall profit tax on the Big Oil.
Souds to me like Obama was taken in the back room and set straight.

John E/EE, are you really all of these folk? How do u do it? I am impressed. There is a certain standard of crudeness to a lot of these pseudonyms that u so faithfully use, but apparently more than a few of us can recognize the handiwork. Hey! It’s a Swamp. Be Swamp-like, and That u are. For this, though, I do thank u: I can do an asymptotic approach to Django Reinhardt on most days, but jimmy carter will never be confused as a statesman on any day. That’s a true statement that I like a lot.

This is NOT the Partisan Leftist Press making fun of Obama. It is NOT true that he has done nothing. He has destroyed whole companies and industries, and plans for much more. He is purposely crippling our economy and way of life, so that we are a) dependents of the Government and the Democrats in perpetuity, and b) no threat, and certainly not a leader in the world, and the last bastion of freedom, and champion of personal rights, especially the right to life and to have children, against the oncoming of the New World Order. This is the left saying, screw the approval polls, get on with it with a vengeance. And SNL does not want someone who can really nail an imitation of this guy. They don't want anyone using their own tactics against them as they did to Bush and Palin. He is already a good enough parody of himself, and a buffoon, by any presidential standard. But the show MUST go on.
But wait a minute, THIS JUST IN....in case anyone notices all this, let's give him the Nobel Peace Prize, or something. There's just SO much hope coming right at cha, can you feel it? You betcha! Or, Yes, we can!
