Providing a major boost to Democrats pushing for a health overhaul, Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe - the most watched lawmaker in Washington right now - today announced that she will back a sweeping healthcare bill being debated by the Senate Finance Committee.
"When history calls, history calls," she said in announcing her plans after a long recitation of the problems confronting the American healthcare system, including rising costs and swelling ranks of the uninsured.
Snowe cautioned that she reserves the right to vote against a healthcare bill when it reaches the Senate floor, likely later this month. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is working to combine the finance bill with a more liberal bill developed by the Senate health committee.
"My vote today is my vote today," Snowe said. "It doesn't foretell what my vote will be tomorrow."
But Snowe is the first Republican on Capitol Hill to signal support for the healthcare campaign being pushed by President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies in Congress.
"I never count chickens before they are hatched, but this is obviously another step forward,'' Obama said after Snowe announced her support and the Senate Finance Committee was nearing its vote today.

How refreshing--a Republican with a conscience, and a sense of history. Too bad there aren't 39 more like her. But then Fox "news" would cease to exist...

Snowe's vote will go down in history as a very bad thing. Again, we do not need the federal government controlling 1/6th of the economy. The federal government cannot even handle itself, much less business and the people's health.
What a shame.

gibster,
This bill (which is one of five) is garbage anyway, we just need to get it out of conference.
If I close my eyes, I can hear the Glenn BeckerHead Teabaggers protesting for more war and less healthcare!

Ask yourselves this...is she voting for the good of the American people or for her own glory? I'm guessing it's all about her.

This Health Reform bill will probably pass if there is no Public Option. But if Nancy Pelosi and the Democratic House Leadership force a Public Option in the bill it will be more difficult to pass and may lose Senator Snow and possible other moderate Republican support. It would be nice if our elected officials that are trying to pass this bill explain how they are going to pay for this legislation without massive tax increases. They seek to avoid that question.

Most republican politicians are one-sided, very close minded... which makes it impossible to dialogue with and come to agreements with.

Snowe's been able to skirt questions about her status within the Republican party for over a decade. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with her being a woman and the Republicans needing an intelligent female face. Maybe not.
But in '96 she made a pretty big stink about the abortion platform at the Repub convention. And she voted against convicting Pres. Clinton after impeachment, which turned out to be the right decision.
As a Mainer, I've got plenty of problems with Snowe, but she's intelligent, well-spoken, and (for a Republican) deliberative. Traits that are supposed to be 'senatorial' - perhaps the Repubs keep her around not because they don't have many women, but because they don't have many actual examples of a true senator.

The Repug leadership (Rush, Crazy Glenn Beck) is going to try to put "that woman" (Snowe) in "her place", you watch.
The Repuglicans new situation as a Southern Regional Party makes Snowe an endangered species. And when has an endangered species ever survived around so many Repuglican mouth breathers?

Nanny-government healthcare is a great idea! The president, every member of congress and their families should all have it. If it's as good as they say it is, this shouldn't be a problem for them. Urge your representatives to make sure that's in the final bill.

Those currently insured will be getting taxed on their benefits in order to pay for the uninsured, for Obama's "reform" and for the failure of our government. Reform makes it worse, not better with this bill.
Citizens will be forced by their government to buy something from a private, for-profit corporation--where all profits go to corporate individuals. This is worse than corporate welfare. Now, instead of corporations getting public money, the corporations will get citizens' private money at the end of the gov'ts gun. This is worse than anything in China. This is worse than Socialism. This is worse than if nothing was done.
The government is forcing us by law--and with the threat of reprisal--to support conventional insurance company medicine--and only those narrow treatments most of the private insurance corps deem correct. What if I know for a fact that accupuncture, Eastern medicine, or massoTx will help in a particular instance? Do the private insurance corps know more about my body than I do? It's an age old problem with the insurance corps--but now we'll be forced to deal with them alone. The know-it-all government will force me to pay for treatments only deemed allowable by the know-it-all, western-medicine health insurance corps., and I will, again, continue to pay extra for treatments I really need. Forced payment for mostly narrowly allowed western measures is BS and antiquated. It's discrimination. The gov't will force me to pay for--and to buy their discrimination and abuse. Big problem here. Don't want the gov't to force me to buy private insurance crap that will tell me how they want me to live and tell me how to die. I know for a fact it is cheaper for insurance companies if we die, rather than if we continue to live while needing medical care. Once we sign on to an insurance company--we become the adversary--the enemy--the opponent. They know it. The only way to go for the uninsured is single-payer payment for treatments received. No waste. We won't have to watch our backs or hire medical sherpas to guide us and protect us through. No payments to the enemy--no profits to the know-it-all, muddlemen insurance companies who shook hands and laughed under the clock at the opening bell on the floor of the NYSE at the beginnings of the Baucus debacle. No Baucus. No Snowe.

Our health care system is disintegrating. Today, 46 million people have no health insurance and even more are underinsured with high deductibles and co-payments. At a time when 60 million people, including many with insurance, do not have access to a medical home, more than 18,000 Americans die every year from preventable illnesses because they do not get to the doctor when they should. This is six times the number who died at the tragedy of 9/11 - but this occurs every year.
In the midst of this horrendous lack of coverage, the U.S. spends far more per capita on health care than any other nation - and health care costs continue to soar. At $2.4 trillion dollars, and 18 percent of our GDP, the skyrocketing cost of health care in this country is unsustainable both from a personal and macro-economic perspective.
It always makes me laugh when I hear people say they want to preserve "insurance choice" in this country. What choice do you have when you work and are nominally "insured," but your insurance coverage doesn't pay for anything you need? Are you then going to have the ability to run out and purchase extra coverage on the wages you make? Well, I guess you have the "choice" to rob a bank or maybe win the lottery to pay for it, but that's about it.
Republicans and their rich oligarchy supporters (Healthcare CEO's and Lobbyists) will do anything to kill a good healthcare bill because they know people will like it and when that happens their electoral goose will be cooked for generations - if it's not already.

> 44,230 more people are losing health coverage each week.
> 191,670 more people are losing health coverage each month.
> 2.3 million more people are losing health coverage each year
Republicans know that a successful health care reform that achieves universal coverage will bury them electorally for a generation. Health Insurers and their Lobbyists and Big Pharma know that a powerful public option and a Medicare bargaining for prices will kick them off the gravy train permanently. Republicans and Big Insurance Company propagandists know their scare tactics aren't nearly as scary as reality for the large majority of Americans.

Well this is promising news because all we need is one. One away from round the clock schooling, one away from round the clock volunteering, one away from round the clock everyone working to pay for healthcare, one away from democratically elected communist state with corporate welfare. Democrats do everything in numbers. If Democrat Congressmen think govt run health care is so great, why don't they pursue it instead of the pockets of corporate lobbyists from the health industry? I mean go big or go home. It's the democratic trend when it some to hurting the populous, so why is it suddenly negotiable if it might benefit the populous?

Ask yourself this:
If your employer announced that you were going to be laid off tomorrow because of the economy, and if you wanted to continue your insurance coverage by COBRA, it would cost of $915 a month (the average cost), how long would you be able to keep yourself and your family covered?
Nationally, COBRA coverage costs around 83% of the average unemployment benefit....and that's just fine with the angry old rich white guys who make up the Republican party, but the rest of us here in the real world can't afford it.

Shelly,
Darling, partisan hacks tell other people what they are. I'm just simply stating the truth as I know it. The truth hurts. I'm so sorry. You're right, the Democrats did everything to stop corporate welfare. There they were from Pelozzi on down suddenly telling us all about trickle down economics to justify helping the Republicans help the wealthy into your account after the wealthy screwed you over with their own policy. Then when given the chance to rule the White House roost the Democrats happily continued to protest such corporate windfalls by continuing G' policies. Shelly you're the shrill. In a day or so you'll be using all my lines to frame your copy and pastes as per usual, while I sit back and laugh at the lack of your creativity. We know shrills can't think for themselves. Ta Ta.

The sky is falling apart. 46 million people have no health insurance. We haven't stopped to ask each one why because we just figure it's because they can't afford it. After the new financial weight of the program is dispersed, the middle class will be unable to pay their accumulated debts. Overwhelmed by having to work more for less to pay for everything, they will trade off with those who have no insurance in the 46 million quota. Opting to live out the rest of their lives in jail then spend dinner time with their family waiting for that 7:30 call from the Collection agency. The rest will find themselves behind bars after trying to find new and exciting ways to get around having to be apart of the program. These will be all the young people who think it's their obligation for the betterment of society to just hand over their paycheck because they want to live in mom and dad's basement.

Exactly, lets add on heathcare for the universe while we're at it. Bush did it, Democrats can do it, too. That's why they were elected by majority. To go froth and do as George Bush. Pile on. I'm sure that private health insurance won't mind taking a big sip out of this never ending creek. Dig deeper spineless Democrats with no platform to call your own whatsoever.
