Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate for Congress in upstate New York - where the Republican candidate has bowed out at campaign's end and called on voters to vote for the Democrat - has some political mentors.
One of them is Glenn Beck, the FOX commentator.
On his radio show, Beck was pressing Hoffman about climate change.
"Well, I think there's a lot of debate on there. I don't believe that it's totally manmade,'' Hoffman said. "And I certainly don't believe the cap and tax bill is going to solve that problem.''
Beck and cohost Pat Gray alighted to the comment about the cap-and-trade energy bill that has cleared the House, and which a Senate committee will start marking up this week.
""He's getting stronger,'' the hosts cheered.
"I have good mentors here,'' Hoffman told his hosts.
" Wait, wait. Are they mentors that will show?'' Beck asked.
" I'm talking about you, Glenn,'' the candidate said.
"Oh, OK. I was going to say all right, as long as they are standing out from the shadows,'' Beck told Hoffman. "It's not like somebody going, 'Doug, I tell you what, you just sign away your soul and I'll make you king of the universe. Those people are coming....
" Yeah, well,'' Hoffman said, "I'm going to keep in touch with people like you so I don't get infected with that disease.''
Sarah Palin, who has called on followers to pay close attention to Beck, also has endorsed Hoffman in the 23rd Congressional District of New York, a race that will be decided on Tuesday.
So have a lot of other Republicans, exposing a rift within the party over what sort of candidate is acceptable and compelling the GOP's pro abortion-rights, pro gay-marriage Dede Scozzafava to quit the race over the wekend and endorse Democrat Bill Owens. It's one of three races which will be closely watched nationally on Tuesday, including the governor's races in New Jersey and Virginia.

Comments
This seat (NY 23) has been held by a Republican for over 100 years.
A win by Teabagger King Hoffman will do nothing but embolden the goober Teabaggers into thinking they can do this everywhere else, thus destroying what's left of the Republican party in the process.
As a Democrat, I'm pulling for Hoffman.
Let the fireworks begin!

We've been watching this trend now for a couple of years. The Republican Party, having lost its way as its leaders, drunk with power after controlling national politics and much of the media for over 10 years, began reaping the crop of hate and intolerance it had cynically sown to attain that power. Moderates and thinking people fled, or were drummed out of the party, as the GOP became a mere shadow of its former self while extremists, who had come up from the grassroots, gradually took control of state and national parties and began choking off reason and diversity.
With "geniuses" like Palin, Beck, and Rush leading the conservative movement, the Repubs should be really worried.

It appears that this candidate is more of a "tearbagger".

You can rely on Leftie posters to get even the simplest facts wrong. For the record: NY 23 elected Democrats from 1933 to 1973, and from 1979 to 1993. See wikipedia.
"Come" probably gets his information from The Swamp. No wonder it's so inaccurate.
(SWAMP NOTE: Look who's got bad information. Wikipedia? Guess what Wikipedia also notes about the predecessor to Republican Rep. John McHugh first elected in 92: David O'Brien Martin (born April 26, 1944) is a former Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from New York.Martin was born in St. Lawrence County, New York. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1966 and Albany Law School in 1973. From 1966 until 1970 he served in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1977 until 1980. He was elected to Congress in 1980 and served from January 3, 1981 until January 3, 1993. Keep working that Wikipedia, it's a gold mine.)

Look at the Teabagger/Carpetbagger thugs!!! Influencing an election for a congressional district in which they do not live. What thugs! What antidemocratic thug practices! Reminds me of election intimidation the Taliban practices! I'm sure we could find at least 1 example of the Taliban getting behind and Afghan candidate and forcing the more moderate candidate to resign.

RNC Brucie,
Dixiecrats don't count as Democrats as they left the Democratic party to join up with todays racist Republican party.
Besides, no matter what the results of NY 23 are, the Republicans are the sure losers. This could be a gift that keeps on giving to the Democrats through 2010, and perhaps beyond.
The battle for upstate New York confirms just how swiftly the right has devolved into a wacky, paranoid cult that is as eager to eat its own as it is to destroy Obama. The movement’s undisputed leaders, Palin and Beck, neither of whom have what Palin once called the "actual responsibilities" of public office, would gladly see the Republican Party die on the cross of right-wing ideological purity. Over the short term, at least, their wish could come true.

The American people did not vote for Marxism and record deficits...and they are not happy. The Democats are in denial, and the elections tomorrow will make a statement that the Blue Dogs better be listen to, if they want to keep their jobs. Glenn Beck is reporting with truth as to what is going on in the West Wing, and it is not a pretty picture. The American people did not know the real Obama, now they do thanks to Glenn Beck. Anyone who is paying attention today knows that in 2010/2012 these radicals will be voted out.

When McCain named Palin as his running mate he unleashed a genie from a bottle in the pits of Republican hell.
Former Governor and current Alaska blogger, Sarah Palin ginned up the support for Hoffman b/c the moderate Republican candidate was not "sufficiently conservative" according to Palin extremism. The moderate was forced to suspend her campaign.

Doesn't this break the Ronnie Raygun commandment, don't talk badly about another republican? No....because these people aren't "real" republicans......I believe the term to be RINO.
This just in: Wanted...openings now available for the RINO panel. The "big" tent is now a "pup" tent.

To a democrat, the defense of America would be considered "Extremism". Doubtful that u will ever know how often u win on charisma, enticing promises, and ignorance. The spirit of FDR is eternal, but the average voter, any state, red or especially blue, is a political novice. The average voter is too busy trying to hold onto a job, deal with their personal issues, or just paying all of your damn taxes to really know how Xtreme u democrats are.
No one forced Scozzafava to quit. The woman apparently had a rare epiphany and realized that she had no real chance of winning.
It means something to be a democrat ~ high taxes, fiscal irresponsibility, abortion the 1st choice always, compassion for terrorists and murderers, deep reverence for despotic rulers and Bolsheviks, an underlying hatred for America, an open hatred for Israel, a peculiar desire for weak / unreliable wind energy or better yet No energy, no recognition of the rights of state government or the individual but special rights for special people, servitude for the 95% not fortunate to be born in America, the inherent right of democrats to re-define your position as the political paradighm shifts, and always an expansion of the power of the federal government to control every aspect of every one else’s existence. The more miserable that existence can become, the better for your cause.
Similarly it means something, or more accurately, it should, to call yourself a Republican, even if it is no more than to slow down the democrats onslaught on civil liberty and freedom and their expansion of government. A Republican more liberal than their liberal democrat opponent moves the surreal into the realm of the chimerical. What would be the damn point of that? Having someone with an “R” in parenthesis who aligns with Lincoln Chafee, Arlen Spector, Olympia Snowe, or Susan Collins is of little or no value. Obvioiusly with two liberals in the race, a liberal quite obviously wins, but if the one with the parenthetical “R” is just going to side up with u 99% of the time, what’s the damn point.

Are you leftists speaking in code? Take off the tin foil hats. You get a better signal that way. Now listen to the voice and obey...

So Django......does this mean these elections are about the candidates? How does that fit in to the whole referendum thing?
Ps....Nice broad strokes on liberals. Inacurate, but good for a laugh.

bill r., my understanding is that Scozzafava was selected by a small committee of alleged Republican power brokers. It was not the normal political process in that this NY House seat is open due to a presidential appointment.
My point is that a Republican should have Republican values, and if someone (Hoffman) can effectively challenge that, then why should that be an issue or somehow an indication of party dissension? Democrats certainly have their special core liberal values. This would just seem to be the right outcome if not an expected or predicted action.
At 2:04 in the morning, I might broad stroke just about anything. bill r., I think that u probably could be redeemed, over time, but I just don’t get democrat ideology. Surely a reasonable person such as yourself, can recognize that a Republican voter / district gains nothing by electing a democrat - Scozzafava. A fake Republican - Sozzafava, again, is just not worth anything.
Thanx for giving it a fair reading.
