Comedy Central's Jon Stewart, who approaches politics with no joke, had called out FOX News Channel's serious Sean Hannity for showing video of a much larger "TEA Party'' protest conducted in Washington on Sept. 12 in talking about a much smaller Capitol rally recently.
Hannity called back last night: Stewart was right - and Hannity uttered some presidential words in fessing up:
"Although it pains me to say this, Jon Stewart, Comedy Central, he was right,'' Hannity said on his show last night.
"Now on his program last night, he mentioned that we had played some inccorect video on this program last week while talking about the Republican health care rally on Capitol Hill,'' Hannity said. "He was correct, we screwed up.
"We aired some video of a rally in September along with a video from the actual event. It was an inadvertent mistake, but a mistake nonetheless. So, Mr. Stewart, you were right.
"We apologize,'' Hannity said on air to Stewart. "But by the way, we wanna thank you and all your writers for watching."
This was from Stewart's viewing of Hannity:

Mark Silva,
Hannity’s crack production team mistakenly ran the wrong video. Exxon is the only place that I know where those sort of errors never happen. Hannity acknowledged the mistake and made the requisite apology before thanking the Stewart people for paying attention. Sean Hannity does badger the witness, but UNLIKE the LSM, this is NOT his standard Modus Operandi. The Koolaid drinkers would never understand this, but Hannity would lose a lot of his viewers IF he were in the habit of just making stuff up. Would not have guessed that this would have been Swamp news. Whatever.

Rubes! You. Are. All. Rubes if you think FOX is a news organization. They get facts wrong. Always. Remember when they "mistakenly" labeled Mark Foley and Larry Craig as Democrats?....repeatedly!!!! No apology issued, because the damage they were looking to cause was done. They wanted their ignorant viewers to hate Democrats rather than the truth.

Fox did alter the video footage making this tea party seem much larger and energetic than it actually was. I actually know someone who attended a tea party in the south suburbs and he told me it was sort of lame and contrived. Everytime I hear Hannity, it makes me laugh. His convictions do not seem sincere and he certainly doesn't seem too bright. What does that tell you about his loyal listeners who believe whatever he spouts out?? He an uncoordinated butthead who would probably trip over his own two feet or slip on a banana peel.

It's Faux News! They're the propaganda organ of the Republican Party! What do you expect them to do, just report the facts? Not a chance. Fear, Hatred, Distraction, Distortion and Division. It's their Mission Statement.

When are people going to grow up and come up with some clever things to say without attacking others for their views? You have people on the left who throw out the "Faux News" line and attack the organization for being a right-wing station, while at the same time staying quiet about MSNBC. And you have people on the right who cry about the liberal mainstream media whenever there's a negative story about conservatives.

Fox "news" watchers will lap up any lies that seem to serve their agendas. These people don't care about learning the truth, nor do they care about the nation or its people. They only care about seeing their agenda reflected in government policy and receiving affirmation of their extremist, fanatical beliefs. But the last thing these people care about is being informed with the truth.
In the case of so-called "conservatives" ignorance truly is bliss. It's truly unfortunate that such pathetic people with such little regard for our nation and lacking any true sense of patriotism have been drawn into the political fray by politicians solely focused on maintaining their power and keeping their jobs, and their supporters are actually proud to be played for suckers. These people are THE PROBLEM with this nation.

Dave - Rationalizing the fact that you allow yourself to be exploited and played for the sucker that you obviously are is no defense for lapping up the tripe you're served by Fox news, and worse, actually believing it to be truth.
Sorry dude, but when you have to fall on the "other guys do it too" sorry stab at a defense, you fail and you lose. But then again, as long as people as ignorant as you are also arrogant enough to taint our democracy with your uninformed vote based on your opinion which is formed upon lies, we all lose. I guess actually getting informed is too much "hard work" for you "conservatives" to do. Then again, why would you bother with that? You might come off as ACTUALLY caring about our country, rather than wasting your time trying to convince yourself that you actually do.
Posted by: Everyday American | November 12, 2009 11:06 AM
There was nothing "inadvertent" about it. Hannity himself smirked when he said that, and the video says "earlier" instead of "today" or "yesterday". If there was ever any remaining doubt--which could only reside in the minds of the most hopelessly ignorant--that Faux News is 100% the propaganda wing of the GOP, this should put it to rest. Faux News - We Distort, You Agree

Since The DNC Swamp runs an article on this, perhaps they'd like to acknowledge that separate articles in the Chicago Tribune (presumably Swamp reporters read this), the Boston Globe, the Sacramento Bee and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel all report on the Obama "stimulus" job claims in their states, and have all found the claims laughably exaggerated or fraudulent.
For example, the Journal Sentinel reports on the claimed Wisconsin job "savings": "A stimulus job report that says more than 10,000 jobs were saved or created in Wisconsin is rife with errors, double counting and inflated numbers based more on satisfying federal formulas than creating real jobs, a Journal Sentinel review has found.
In one case, five jobs were mistakenly listed as 50 - and then counted twice. In another, pay raises to workers were listed as saving more than 100 jobs. And in another, jobs were listed as saved even though the money had not been received and no work on the project had begun."
We await The Swamp article highlighting this Obama administration fraud

Why has no one pointed out that that Hannity idiot is STILL lying about this? He calls it an "inadvertent mistake" yet his crack (smoking) production team managed to subtly insert the word "earlier" into the video, thereby acknowledging that they knew this footage was not correct. Pathetic. But like an earlier comment mentioned, Fox "News" doesn't care, they knew that their stupid lie would be accepted as fact by enough morons out there to justify their deceit. How do complete idiots like Hannity and the entire staff at Fox sleep at night?

Posted by: Deb | November 12, 2009 11:26 AM
Mark, at least Hannity makes his corrections known. For the Tribune, it seems one has to go online to see the corections now. And just for Nov. 11, there are eight corrections! Eight of them!
It also seems to me that not too long ago I nabbed you on a major error, which you did acknowledge.
But shall we look at Fox's mistakes compared to NBC? Blowing up cars? CBS? Forged memos? CNN and Tailhook? Or CNN saying Limbaugh praised slavery and then had to recant that he never said that or anything even remotely like it? Or how about the NY Times and Jayson Blair?
Be careful when you cast stones, Mark.

"A lie told often enough becomes the truth."
- Vladimir Ilych Lenin
"The most brilliant propagandist technique will yield no success unless one fundamental principle is borne in mind constantly...it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over."
- Joseph Goebbels
"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country... corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money-power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."
- U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, Nov. 21, 1864
(letter to Col. William F. Elkins)
Ref: The Lincoln Encyclopedia, Archer H. Shaw
(Macmillan, 1950, NY)
Damned FAUX-News watching, poop-flinging, tree-dwelling, monkeys with car keys once again prove that the two most-common elements in the universe remain hydrogen and stupidity.
It started out innocently enough. I began to think at parties now and then to loosen up. Inevitably though, one thought led to another, and soon I was more than just a social thinker. I began to think alone - "to relax," I told myself - but I knew it wasn't true. Thinking became more and more important to me, and finally I was thinking all the time.
I began to think on the job. I knew that thinking and employment don't mix, but I couldn't stop myself. I began to avoid friends at lunchtime so I could read Thoreau and Kafka. I would return to the office dizzied and confused, asking, "What is it exactly we are doing here?"
Things weren't going so great at home either. One evening I had turned off the TV and asked my wife about the meaning of life. She spent that night at her mother's.
I soon had a reputation as a heavy thinker. One day the boss called me in. He said, "Listen - I like you, and it hurts me to say this, but your thinking has become a real problem. If you don't stop thinking on the job, you'll have to find another job."
This gave me a lot to think about.
I came home early after my conversation with the boss. "Honey," I confessed, "I've been thinking..."
"I know you've been thinking," she said, "and I want a divorce!"
"It is serious," she said, lower lip aquiver. "You think as much as college professors, and college professors don't make any money, so if you keep on thinking we won't have any money!"
"That's a faulty syllogism," I said impatiently, and she began to cry. I'd had enough. "I'm going to the library," I snarled as I stomped out the door.
I headed for the library, in the mood for some Nietzsche, with a PBS station on the radio. I roared into the parking lot and ran up to the big glass doors... they didn't open. The library was closed.
To this day, I believe that a Higher Power was looking out for me that night. As I sank to the ground clawing at the unfeeling glass, whimpering for Zarathustra, a poster caught my eye. "Friend, is heavy thinking ruining your life?" it asked. You probably recognize that line. It comes from the standard Thinker's Anonymous poster. Which is why I am what I am today: a recovering thinker. I never miss a TA meeting. At each meeting we watch a non-educational video; last week it was "Porky's." Then we share experiences about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting. I still have my job, and things are a lot better at home.
Life just seemed... easier, somehow, as soon as I stopped thinking.
I think the road to recovery is almost complete for me; today, I registered to vote Republican.

Jon Stewart is the ONLY muckraking news show that exists!
He examines all sides of the political spectrum.
Hannity was only doing what his boss Roger Ailes told him to do. Ailes's mentor was Joseph Goebbels, the one who "invented" the big lie.
Most viewers of Fox have no idea regarding how many times this channel uses incorrect video with its news programs.
Remember Jon Stewart's message: "Don't make me TIVO this!"
They TIVO everything, thankfully so.

Fox also ran video of a Biden speech from LAST YEAR and claimed it was recent. It was Biden's speech where he quoted John McCain saying the economy was strong (and then Biden made fun of McCain for saying it).
Fox "news" ran the Biden clip, but only the part where he quoted McCain, acted like it was a recent speech and said Biden had changed his stance and was now saying the economy was strong.
Fox "news" is a joke.

Having a P.A. pull the wrong B-roll for a story is hardly news. It happens all the time. Not defending the mistake, just saying big whoop.
Versus did the same thing during the Hawks broadcast monday night. Out of a commercial they show a shot of the Chicago River with the broadcaster saying, "Welcome back to a beautiful night in Chicago." Only problem is, the Trump Tower wasn't there. Just a big hole. So they used B-roll footage from a few years ago that some P.A. pulled in haste.

Anyone who believes Hannity did this unintentionally is a fool. FOX is becoming a gaggle of insecurity and jealousy. He needs the same misguided admiration that his buddy Beck receives and is willing to go to any lengths to get it and his viewers are gullible enough to take it, and then defend it when it’s proven to be fake. O’Reilly is on the same track.
Posted by: WaitWut? | November 12, 2009 12:08 PM
What's worse, lying or ignoring. When FOX called out Acorn, Van Jones and Anita Dunn and congress cut funds to Acorn while the other two quit, the rest of the media did not even report that news. This is worse than inflating the numbers for a rally.
Posted by: ray b | November 12, 2009 12:09 PM
Wow, as an Independent I have to say that while I enjoy bipartisan debate...this is a joke. Make your case state your opinion, we will respect it, but leave the finger pointing and the name calling out of it!
For the record, Hannity claims not to be a "News Show" but rather an Opinion show hosted by an admitted and confirmed Reagan Republican. Don't like his views? Dont watch! The news coming out of the news shows from Fox are indeed news and I don't need anyone calling me a loser, idiot or sucker just because I watch Fox news or CNN or MSNBC or anything else.
Believe it or not, there are people out there that are smart enough to make up their own minds and develop their own convictions. The freedom to disagree is what makes this country great...so please respectfully disagree and keep the hate out of this!

Hannity shows class in owning up to the FACT that the video shown by Fox for this story was not correct. Good for him.
His claim that this was "inadvertent" or an innocent error is, however, a huge hunka hooey, and I'm not buying it for a minute. He had every intention of trying to pass this off as the real deal, with as many as four times the number of people attending the rally as were actually there, to anybody who'd believe it.
Hannity isn't one BIT sorry that his story was a lie; he's just sorry he got caught at it.

BIG FREAKIN' DEAL.
You wanna talk about lies? In 2007 CNN took a photo of a puddle and one sign to avoid the fact that 400 people turned out in NH for Ron Paul when there were 20 of each of the other candidates... and they did it on purpose, to make it look like he wasn't even there. And then there was the guy with the gun, and they did not show he was black. I could go on and on, but Stewart probably didn't notice..

You do realize that you're comparing a fox NEWS network show to a show on COMEDY CENTRAL, right?
The only difference I see is that, when The Daily Show takes video out of context, it's not to deceive anyone, AND the audience knows or is let in on the joke.
By their very nature, parody and satire will accentuate the absurd. The Daily Show will highlight the hypocrisy.
And no, even after explaining the difference between COMEDY/satire/parody and NEWS, I'm still not "tired of his one joke repetoire"

c'mon people SOT
Hannity did not mess up, He got caught.
I work in broadcast news-- the montage of clips played was NOT a mistake. The clips, the media, was digitized in organized bins, structured by event & date for easy location.
It's not a matter of "oh, we accidentally put in the wrong footage"; they'd have had to have gone into the 9/12 bins in order to pull the footage in the edit bay for usage.
Again, Hannity--- don't apologize for the editor using the wrong clips: apologize for directing her/him to do so. For purposefully, intentionally inflating the crowd size to suit the fabricated story.

You people sicken me, get some ambition, try thinking on your own, it's bad enough you want massive government to take care of you because you can't do it yourself, but at least try thinking for yourself.

Silva,
Why don't you spend some time talking about Obama's weeklong process of figuring out what happened at Fort Hood? I can't believe you actually wrote a piece about B roll.
Hannity is an opinion show, not a news show. And Stewart is an equal opportunity comedian. He knocks everyone.
We have lots of serious issues to discuss. Quit being so lazy, Silva, and keep this administration honest.

Let's keep it fair. The conservative comedy central network had this highlight...ends in bimbos.

Labeling Fox News as "Faux News" or "Fox Noise" has been played out and appeals to the lowest element in our society. It's not clever. It's inaccurate. Hatred of Fox stems from the fact that they consistently crush the other left wing liberal news networks that push liberal agendas. Fox also is able to effectively call out the white house ministry of disinformation and sway public opinion towards rational policy, instead of radical socialist ideals. Deal with it....

John D, do you have any valid criticism of Media Matters or do you just spew nonsense? I challenge you to refute any of the points on the MM page linked below. You will have to use your brain and not just hide behind meaningless bluster:

The only two people that think Fox News is fair are Red Bentivegna and John Bosnak. The rest of the world knows that Fox is a pimp for Rupert Murdoch, who fires all those ditxy blondes who talk against Bush and teh Republican Party. Fox is about as faie inded as Saddam Hussein was.Fox speaks more propaganda than the Kremlin. Also that Irish drunk Oreilly should be working midnights in Alaske with his bs. he could take that hooker Ann Coulter with him

Hannity owned up to it, apologized, and now we move on. Done.
Posted by: JohnM | November 12, 2009 11:01 AM
When you're caught at something, it's backed up by video and even becomes part of a comedy show routine, finally admitting to it is not the same as owning up to it. It's more like a case of OOPS!

Tom S...
I agree though they are not "NEWS" journalists, they are "NEWS" readers...they learned to read the teleprompter in communications class. That has nothing to do with reporting.
Posted by: lochnessmonster | November 12, 2009 5:29 PM
Second time in as many days that someone on Faux News has actually admitted the truth. Looks like the push-back from the WH is getting some results.

If this kind of trickery was found, who's to say it doesn't happen more often? So......move on you say? I don't think so.

Fox News isn't a news program - it provides editorial commentary on news events from a consistently partisan viewpoint to reinforce the views already held by its audience. Exactly like MSNBC and the New York Times do.

SPRINGFIELD: Bush & Cheney were not out to ruin the planet, they were just out to make themselves and their cronies very rich at the public's expense. They did one Hell of a job.

Oh, and Jon Stewart is so credible. Another entertainer and left wing loon drinking kool aid! Enjoy Spaz!
Posted by: Jo | November 12, 2009 6:23 PM
Fox News (and I use the term loosely) is not know for their indepth accurate reporting. The talking heads on one of their morning shows wanted to show video tape of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. That would be Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas and the video from 1859-1860. When one of the staffers explained Video hadn't been invented yet, they put pictures of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass up. So let's be straight with this: Fox News is for entertainment only and should not be taken seriously.
Posted by: Sandy | November 12, 2009 6:28 PM
Good catch for Stewart. The MSM does stuff like this all the time. Camera shots often don't mesh up to what is being talked about. Bloggers catch a lot of this stuff, and I am glad for it. As far as Hannity, I like his show and will continue to watch. I take his opinion as just that-opinion. Aren't they all the same way? Show me one news show that isn't. So I would rather watch a right leaning show, because they don't hate the military like the left does. I can laugh at Stewart too- just don't prefer his point of view.
Posted by: Eileen | November 12, 2009 6:33 PM
Hannity fessed up because he was caught. There was no 'mistake'-anything FOX does is deliberate and planned.
Posted by: Jeff | November 12, 2009 7:19 PM
Love the left wing comments where the creativity is limiting to regurgitating what they hear from Robert Gibbs and Jon Stewart! Now go back to watching MSNBC and Keith Obermann for your news programming and fair and balanced reporting.
Posted by: Chip | November 12, 2009 7:42 PM
Sean Hannity fessed up only because he got caught. The trouble is, most of the time he doesn't get called on his exaggerations and fabrications, so his listeners are inclined to believe what he says.
Posted by: kathryn | November 12, 2009 7:46 PM
I love reading these comments from Chicagoland folks... liberals who just have so much trouble accepting the truth. FOX is #1. FOX is fair and balanced - you may disagree, but on every show they have the dissenting party, other side, or the devil's advocate in there giving the other viewpoint. What really grinds on your liberals is that (a) when someone like Hannity makes a mistake, he admits it... it's called ethics... something you don't find at irrelevant network and cable news channels like MSNBC, CNN, NBC, et al. It just irks you to no end that the VAST MAJORITY agree with Hannity, Beck, O'Reilly, Stossel, and the rest.... and we just sit back and laugh. Intelligence is a wonderful thing to have... something most Democrats are still wishing for!

"WOW! This is as big as Watergate.
Yeah, like Stewart never manipulates his viewers with video either taken out of context or edited out of context."
JD - You do realize that one show is a comedy and one is not? I thought Republicans understood satire. You sure get insulted when it's mentioned you don't .... geez
Posted by: ComedyVsFairAndBalanced | November 12, 2009 8:26 PM
Jon Stewart really got Hannity...oh boy. You lefties really know how to bust someone.

Dave: In regards to Media Matters. When it's mission statement is written to prevent CONSERVATIVE misinformation, I hardly think that passes as an unbiased source of anything.
Media Matters own mission statement makes it irrelevant.

I have not turned on FOX in 2 yrs. They are not a News channel. They make up their own news.
Posted by: Bud | November 12, 2009 9:42 PM
Is this really news to put on your website? Come on spend your resources to report something that matters...nope not agenda here (a chance to take a shot at FOX) keep moving along.
How come I never see when an MSNBC or CNN correspondent makes a mistake on this website?
This type of bias agenda is reason why I cancelled our subscription to your fish wrap.

Love Stewart but it was Olbermann that first found this out, not Stewart. Olbermann always is the first. He's the brightest thats why. He went to Princeton people . Where did Hannity or any of the Fix News people attend. Fix news spews utter falsehoods every day and everyone in the world knows it and yet people still support them. The number of brain dead cretins in this country is scary.
Posted by: soo | November 13, 2009 12:46 AM
To all the people trying to educate the sheep that The Daily Show's audience actually KNOWS when their videos are supposed to be satirical as opposed to the obvious fabrication by Hannity's show...remember, the wingnuts believe Steven Colbert is on their side. They really dont know any better.
Posted by: Miranda | November 13, 2009 5:19 AM
Stewart isnt even funny, but then again people who watch him are like the crackheads from the hood who light off fire crackers. It does`nt take much to amuse them !

Fox is not new but propaganda from the whacked-out Far Right. Unfortunately, the U.S. is headed in that direction. Scary.
Posted by: Argette | November 13, 2009 7:01 AM
It's sad that conservatives have to show fake numbers of supporters. The conservative movement is a small, fervent group filled with lot's of angry people. By the way, screaming and anger doesn't make your logic any better.
Posted by: Al Langevin | November 13, 2009 7:03 AM
It is clear that media for both sides of the political spectrum has had issues. All of you may recall that Dan Rather lost his job due to questionable reporting during the Bush's re-election campaign.
Press neutrality is non-existent.

I liked the footage the main stream gave the professional protesters from SEIU when the bank conference came to Chicago. It was the same group of about 20 people from ten different angles. They reported hundreds of protesters.

For about, oh, 20 years now, Rush Limbaugh has been playing "gotcha" with democrats and the media. You lefties must have great respect for him.
Posted by: ted | November 13, 2009 11:55 AM
It wouldn't be the first time one of the conservative heads did this. I seem to remember Michelle Malkin getting caught sometime this summer using photos of one rally with a far greater number of attendees and trying to pawn it off as another rally.
ALL conservatives are liars. No reason to get upset because we've found another instance. It's like noticing that the sky is blue.

Ah. Well, Dal, several of the posters from the RIGHT here (John D, who is seldom right, Terry, Bruce to name a few) ONLY post on how wrong the LEFT is, never the right. That makes "Preventing LIBERAL misinformaton" THEIR mission statement, as it were. If Media Matters is made irrelevant by their bias (and I admit they're biased), then those on the right who comment only on the left are EQUALLY irrelevant.
