The Swamp

by Mark Silva and updated

Lou Dobbs is out at CNN.

Arguably the most conservative voice in a high-profile time-slot at a cable news network that bills itself as a purveyor of "no bias, no bull,'' Dobbs announced in his evening news broadcast that he is leaving -- "effective immediately.''

Dobbs, a longtime fixture of business news and then broader news broadcasting who has laced his reports with an alarming warming about the threat of illegal immigration, has come under fire from interest groups for a report which many view as xenophobic.

"Over the past six months, it has become increasingly clear that strong winds of change have begun buffeting this country and affecting all of us," Dobbs said during his 7 p.m. EST broadcast. Dobbs, 64, said he discussed the issue with CNN President Jonathan Klein, who agreed to release him from his contract -- which was to run into 2011 -- and "that will enable me to pursue new opportunities."

Dobbs, with pointed thanks to CNN founder Ted Turner, also gone now, says he has been encouraged to move on to a new career building upon his major concerns, with a goal of "problem-solving.'' He also left the air tonight with a parting shot at the lack of "true representation in Washington.''

His network also has been trailing other cable news networks lately in the critical evening hours, with the decidedly conservative fare at FOX News Channel garnering the biggest share of evening viewers and the decidely left-leaning MSNBC News fare trailing.

FOX, for its part, suggested that there is no sign of Dobbs moving its way: A FOX News and FOX Business Network spokesperson said toight: "We have not had any discussions with Lou Dobbs for Fox News or Fox Business."

CNN President Klein said in an issued statement: "Lou has now decided to carry the banner of advocacy journalism elsewhere... All of us will miss his appetite for big ideas, the megawatt smile and larger than life presence he brought to our newsroom.''

The abrupt departure of Dobbs, hinted at in the press just before broadcast and announced to a surprised staff before the show and then confirmed only on the news anchor's own program this evening, hints at a deeper problem behind the set at the Cable News Network, home, it says, of no bias, no bull.

CNN recently refused to air the cable TV ads of a group behind a Dump Lou Dobbs campaign.

The cable news announcer's complaints about "broken borders'' have become a broken-record - "60 minutes of anti-immigrant hate'' -- according to the group that made an ad solicitiing signatures on a petition to drop Dobbs.

Media Matters partnered with America's Voice, with the help of "thousands of grassroots activists'' who responded to fundraising for the anti-Dobbs ad campaign, to produce an ad it planned to run Oct. 21 and 22 during the cable network's heavily promoted Latino in America series.

This was only the latest move by a group that has mounted a full-scale campaign against CNN's self-styled "advocacy journalist.''

The group was praising tonight's news:

"For too long, CNN provided Lou Dobbs with its stamp of approval as he pursued a dangerous, one-sided and all too often false conspiracy tinged crusade against immigrants," said Eric Burns, president of Media Matters. "This is a happy day for all those who care about this nation of immigrants and believe in the power of media to elevate the political discourse."

As CNN's evening news broadcast came under fire for its political bent, the network's ratings, as measured in viewership, also had slipped.

FOX is on track for its best year yet, Nielsen Media Research has reported, both in total viewers for the day and during prime-time, while October proved to be the worst month this year for both rivals CNN and MSNBC. Among the cable news channels, FOX has run No. 1 for 94 months, since January 2002.
.
CNN had countered with a defense that Dobbs was "tough, relentless and independent.'' The anchor and managing editor of Lou Dobbs Tonight, CNN said, had " won nearly every major award for television journalism'' -- including an Emmy for Lifetime Achievement in 2005, a National Television Academy award in '04 and the George Foster Peabody Award for his coverage of the 1987 stock market crash.''

And tonight, Lou Dobbs Tonight crashed.

So long, Lou Doo!

Don't let the door hit ya in the arse on the way out!
.

When I worked in Europe I always tried to catch the Lou Dobbs show on CNN.

Since I returned to the United States and had many other options I still tried to watch him nightly.

The remainder of the lineup on CNN is boring and not worth watching.

In the future I will tune into FOX and Special Report for my dose of nightly news.

Good luck Lou and if you catch on some where else I will tune in.

Would this be like a "purge" executed by the Leftists of CNN?

I bet Dobbs already has a job lined up over at Fake News Channel, they'd fit together like a hand-in-a-glove.

Maybe Dobbs wants to spend more time with his xenophobia? We shall see what happens, but I get the feeling that this is not retirement, but a Glenn Beckian style move to Fake News Channel. Lou Dobbs has been a terrible PR for CNN.

I hope a minority takes Dobbs' job just to piss him off. It would be even funnier if his show gets turned into an International Broadcast, then we can say he was outsourced.

Good for Lou. Bad for CNN.

The tyranny of the liberal minority at work again. These nuts cannot tolerate anyone with a contrary viewpoint--in their view, those who disagree must be silenced. It's a disgrace that any network gives them the time of day.

He'll be alongside Glenn Beck at Fox in a matter of days. Truly laughable. What sad days we live in, when odd balls like this are given bully pulpits in the public discourse.

Great -- I'll start watching CNN again. Couldn't stand to even look at him. Made me want to vomit.

"A strong wind of change" somewhat like passing gas! See ya on Faux Bozo! Hey...did you find that Birth Certificate yet?

Amazing how this country has fallen to the level of whiner. Illegal immigration IS the problem, not Dobbs.

CNN's loss.

Welcome to Fox Lou! We'll find a spot in the line up for you!

Welcome to Fox Lou! We'll find a spot in the line up for you!

Dobbs was the only reason I even turned CNN on for one hour. Lou will come out on top.

Good riddance.

Dobbs isn't much of a journalist and has never credible about covering business issues. He's just a hold over from talking head days of TV when a good voice and screen appearance was all that was necessary to read the teleprompter.

He's a guy whose whole career has been to confused with Paul Kangas, just without the head for business or a nose for news.

A voice that is between center-left and center-right can not be tolerated on CNN by the wacko left-wing loons and nuts. And CNN wonders why it can't beat Fox. CNN and MSNBC are both useless organizations that are truly not NEWS media but just talking points for the left-wing idiots.

Very happy that Lou is out. He used made up
facts to report his"news".

In fact, on an interview with 60minutes he was asked where he had gotten his details that illegal immigrant spread leprosy in the US, he admitted to be wrong which says nothing more than he was making things up.

He needs to go to Fox news, he belong there.

Good riddance. CNN now becomes credible again.

Illegal immigration IS the problem, not Dobbs.

That's what the Indians said!

I am delighted that Dobbs is off CNN. He may find another venue more suited to his vitriolic commentary. I will say that before I ever listened to him I heard he was out after having his tonsils removed. I know how painful that can be for an adult and felt sorry for him. Once he was back on the air, I lost all sympathy for him. I hope it was a miserable time for him. Petty of me, but Hey, I'm human.

Very little doubt that Dobbs ends up somewhere on the Fox network by the end of the year…

Lou who?

This CNN “purge” tells volumes. I will listen to Roland Martin and Campbell Brown, but you Marxists can’t listen to Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck, or Bill O’Reilly. Redemption for most of u is going to be extremely difficult to ascertain. More prayer than can be said at a Southern Tent Revival in the summertime is needed here. Jes sayn’.

Perhaps now, Dobbs can go somewhere where he can speak his mind, without cowtowing to corporate execs, worried about being politically correct.

Lou Dobbs viewership, I predict, is about to increase dramatically.

What is it about the media and its desire to drive viewers away? CNN will lose more viewers it can't afford to lose. It will gain, what? The 10-15 percent of the country that actually want illegals here?

Why did this news report fail to mention that Dobb's home was shot at recently while his wife was out front? Could this be part of the reason he's quitting? If this happened to Dan Rather, Olbermann or Maddow's home by golly it would be all over the news. Hardly a peep here. Maybe because Dobbs is villified in the mainstream media and the sense is he deserves it. So sad.

but you Marxists can’t listen to Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck, or Bill O’Reilly.

Damn Skippy!

Ps...Hope your pretty Latinos are legal!

Dems support illegal imms for one reason and one reason alone : the Latino vote which they are willing to sell this country to hell for. Dobbs got tired of working for a company that abets the idiocy.

You fools who don't have the intelligence to at least split your time watching Fox will never recognize that you are mere pawns of the forces destroying this country - including your and your children's and your children's children's futures. You truly are the "Useful Idiots", along with the foolish bunch at CNN who are harming those same generations with their naive left bias.

Get a clue, dummies.

Dobbs probably got a HUGE deal from Fox News!

As a legal hispanic,
I for one am very happy for Lou. He is too classy and intelligent to be on a low-class network like CNN. I was happy when Glenn came over to Fox and will be even happier when Lou joins the Fox news team. CNN and MSNBC are toast!

Gosh you also forgot to mention all those freedoms you are losing in that selfproclaimed patriotic garbage you carry as some fake badge of courage. Taking back America from Americans. There will be plenty of room in the Fox toilet for one more dropping.

CNN and MSNBC go hand in hand together right to the gutter. OH sorry their ratings are already there. Let the Left keep it up it only makes NOV 2010 easier.

You mean CNN used to report the news? Why'd they give this ranting Bozo a primetime slot?

Dobbs is a sphincter and the source of the "strong winds" he cites. So it's back to the farm in NJ. Just don't expect much help at harvest time. Stop at Ellis Island on your way home.

I starting paying attention to him in the last national election cycle, and found him consistently sarcastic and nasty, so I began turning CNN off whenever he came on. He seems to be a hateful guy, and I didn't and don't want him polluting my life with his vitriol.

No reason to watch the Communist News Network at all now...Larry King couldn't find an intelligent question if it bungied his suspenders. Wolf is dumb as a box of rocks, see his Jeopardy performance. The rest of the "State Appoved News" crew is so biased as to be unwatchable.

Now if CNN can further improve their on-air personnel, with more professionals and less bimbos, the station would be well on its way, back to quality news content. That also means, that Wolfie's got to get out of the Situation Room and re-aquant himself with America !! Like too many stations, cable and non-cable, these days, they have been hammering President Obama, starting the attacks even when he wasn't in Office, 5 months !! What kind of yellow journalism is that ?? The Fourth Estate seems to have gotten its bottom line caught in a wringer and they have made their decision to champion, that which sells " stories ", quickly and cheaply, sensationalism and news not fit to print. We have reporters editorializing as they present the " news " !! It is turning out that the Fourth Estate, has become Real Estate and they are looking for their quick-fix, which doesn't include being the champion of the people, anymore. Another Corporate take-over, our freedom of the press, it is now in the greedy hands of the Corporations, not to mention foreign hands, as well. Adios, America !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

A victory for the Left Wing Crazies that want to silence any opposition and dissent in this country. Free speech and thought are under attack by the Left from the White House to the bozos in Congress. The United States and its institutions as we have known it is under attack from within.

What a sad day. When a person speaks the truth it hurts. That's the problem in this country. Nobody cares about the people who add the most, the middle class. Is anybody going to helps us ? I will miss Lou Dobbs. It was refreshing to hear someone speak from the heart. I hope all the scum bags like Pelosi are happy. Pelosi thinks people are stupid. Lou Dobbs made us feel otherwise. Good Luck !

Dobbs was concerned about ILLEGAL immigrants. We should all be as concerned. They are a huge part of the problems in this country, from schools going under to hospitals being closed.

Really Jimmy?

Just how is it that "the left" is silencing you right wing nutbags anyway? By the White House saying (correctly) that Faux isn't a credible news outlet? That's what you idiots call "silencing the right"?

Shut up Repugs, you have an entire network that works as the media arm of the Republican party (Faux news) and you dominate the AM Hate radio scene with doughy pigs like Druggy Rush.

Quit playing the victim card, Wingnuts, no one believes you or cares.

Personally, I am glad to see Lou Dobbs gone. He definitely is not an objective reporter. He sickened me to the point that I would stop watching CNN for the evening. I will look forward to a new newscast journalist. CNN reports the news, Fox news watcher need to start embracing differences - they are the cause of negativity and conflict where it need not be!

Lou dares to do the unthinkable in this day and age, he asks that laws on the books be enforced. How dare he want laws to be enforced! Doesn't he realize that enforcing the laws is racist! Libtards hate when laws are enforced!
And when enforcing the laws is deemed "racist", what does that really say about that race?

One less racist on television -- well, until he moves over to Racist Central (I mean, Fox News).

My takeaway from that video: Lou Dobbs may potentially go into politics as a candidate (did he miss any filing dates -- certainly it's too late in Chicago).

if so, i think that would be a BETTER use of his energy. He already comes across as strongly opinated (rather than neutral)...as he talks about illegal immigrants (while ignoring ILLEGAL US Citizens -- those enabling the problem of illegal immigration; he also ignores the issues of economic development that is needed to stop people from leaving their home countries)

Lou Dobbs is far more like Glenn Beck than Mike Huckabee. So he is extreme on the right.

it may be "boring" and less emotionally stirring than Fox's talk shows...but CNN is better at real news. Lou Dobbs, to me, is big drp in quality from Wolf Blitzer's Situation Room.

Looks like Faux Noise Channel is going to be getting a brand spanking new doughy white racist (Dobbs) pretty soon.

Dobbs went FAR beyond just being against illegal immigration. That may have been what he started out doing but within the last few years he turned into a straight up racist. He didn't even try to hide it.

Good Riddance, Dobbs.

Why do you racist liberals not want to give immigrants from other countries around the world the same chance and opportunities as Mexicans that illegally push their way to the front of the immigrations line? Why do you hate people from other countries so much that you don't enforce laws that ensure equal opportunity for immigration.

Illegal immigration supporters tend to be uninformed by choice and most are bigoted. Many have a hidden agenda. Name calling is their stock in trade. Tough critics, indeed. But the truth will out. Lou is an honorable human being; his audience will grow as will appreciation for those who support common sense and the laws of the U.S. Left or right isn't the issue, children.

maybe all the illiegals and the idiot in the white house should leave

Now he can be a full time bigot. He must have seen how much money Sarah Palin was making being the Tonya Harding of Politics.

They'll love him at Propaganda News.

Now the Communist News Network (CNN) can get back to its wacko leftist base, and continue to support illegal immigration, radical socialism, and the moral decay of this nation.

I am sorry to see Lou Dobbs leave CNN as he was the only anchor that tried to give a true picture of things going on in this country. He was my favorite on CNN. CNN is so biased. What part of illegal immigrants don't you people understand?

Dobbs' anti brown people hysteria knows no bounds. CNN is the middle of the road cable network in this country, and Dobbs rantings against Hispanics really isn't the niche that CNN is trying to fill in the market. Faux News already has that covered.

Perhaps he will take some time off, reflect on the hate he has stoked. Either way, goodbye and good riddance.

I think we can all agree that by quitting before his contract is up, Lou Dobbs can do more good for Alaska.

HIT the road jack! And dont you come back No Mo!!!

I am happy that Lou Dobbs is leaving CNN...he fits in far more at FAUX News where "wingers" can certainly find him soon. CNN needs to go back to being a legitimate news outlet...they could not do that with his program.

Good for you Lou, you deserve much more than cnn

I resigned too with CNN last night. When a major station no longer allows for free speech and unbias opinions, I do not want to waste my time watching it. No matter how critical certain groups became about him, Lou told the truth about events along with his opinions which everyone has a right to agree or not.. CNN has made a FOX viewer out of me.

good riddens to him. He liked the sound of his own voice too much. News reporting should be just that, reporting. We don't need anybodies opinion and that includes McCarferty. . Just give us the facts as you see them, that is enough of an opinion.
Wolf is great so long as he reports and keeps his opinion to himself. The people are smart, they can make up their own opinion.

Lou, you separated the truth from the rhetoric and exposed it for what it is.
CNN, you're not much anyway, and you're going down from there. Sorry, but I'm done.

Palin Dobbs 2012

Quitters for America

Quit First

CNN loosing Lou Dobbs leaves CNN with nothing, probable replace him with some Obama Wimper, to please the White House and avoid censorship.

Z I N G !

Bill r., an arrow straight thru to the heart. Ring me up. Probably will have to give this one to u.

It is my studied opinion that both sides of this argument "use" the Immigration Issue. I surely understand Lou Dobbs’ concerns and arguments, but it is far more personal on more than one level (School, Church, Music affairs, personal relationships) than I could safely explain to anyone within a Swamp. Still can like Lou, but guess who I will always like better.

One weak argument that I can offer based on my pragmatic point of view is this: If u are tough enough to cross the Rio Grande, and 25 miles of Tx Nothingness, and have committed no other crimes, then, in your own special mode of gaining access u deserve to be here ~ Django’s Immigration Policy.

For what it is worth, Jessica Biel Lite was born here, as was her mother. Quite legal she is. Salma Hayek Lite is a legal immigrant, after 14 years. My other closest pL is also a legal immigrant, but her sister ~ my personal Torturer, and her cousin are not.

I tend to, rightly or wrongly, separate the political perspective from the pragmatic. When I become King, the issue will be resolved. Until then, would surely have to score this one for U, bill r. Let us Note the austerity of the occasion.

America Loves you LOU!!!

Lou Dobbs steps down.
There have been widespread reports that the anti-laws set have been seen dancing in the parking lots of Home Depot since the announcement.

Django.....I take no pleasure in "scoring" a point as my desire to point out that men like Dobbs and others who make a living, and for that purpose only, divide us rather than showing how much in common we have.

If you had asked me 2 years ago what my party affiliation was I would have said “Conservative Democrat”. 2 years later, I have been labeled a liberal and have risen to the cause. It has very little to do with “real” politics, instead it’s my disgust with the word “conservative”, Republicans and Blue Dogs. The chants of the right are insane and uninformed. I’m amazed at the amount of misinformation that is swallowed whole by the right. Mr. Dobbs...take your spoon somewhere else. CNN, get your act together. Though I despise the trick pony acts of FOX, CNN puts me to sleep. Then again, I very seldom watch any of them. As far as my new Liberal status, I’m not very good at it, but it’s better than the alternative.

Seriously bill r @ 11:15 a.m., I do think that you have a good point here. There would be nothing about me that would be xenophobic. I can always find someone, a foreigner or non-foreigner, that I think is better at the things that I also do, and more deserving of life even, if it were based on merit, than myself. But I can also understand the security issue and economic cost, and the overall concept of maintaining a secure border as well.

Republicans opened the gate for cheap labor. Democrats want a locked in base of voters, at least in Tx. Ain’t nobody here without sin. Realisticly, I do not see anyone with a heart, loading people up in box cars and sending them back. Your point would be that Lou Dobbs’ favorite issue and tone is divisive, or something worse, I think. I would tend to give him more credit as having some real, legitimate concerns. I could be wrong, but while I disagree with his more strident position on this issue, I am not ready to view it as something of evil intent or hateful.

In general I don’t expect to agree with every conservative commentator on every issue, every time. I probably consistently error in giving people the benefit of the doubt, but I still think that his intentions and arguments are based on respecting the law and maintaining border security at a level that reflects a calendar year of 2009, not 1999. I have personal issues that don’t completely align with that. I really don’t deny your point, but am not convinced that I need to put the thumb down on Lou. Serious.

Typical media yahoo that has all the answers but does not have the guts to run for office.

You know what would be really great?

If CNN gave this time slot to Soledad O'Brien.

Django......I too see the legitimate concerns of this issue. It is a serious issue that I feel needs open and honest debate rather than an apparent long running campaign bringing only one side of this issue to light. I feel rather safe in saying that Lou has "never" given the "other side" of this issue. I also would have to say that this has been a problem that both parties have failed to deal with. Do you think that the republican party is interested in solving it? or could it be just another political football that works nicely at this time?

Dobbs is married to a Hispanic American.

Lou Dobbs (Harvard College Class of '67) always was a class act.

Though of course once in a while I disagreed with him.
:-))

I would not be surprised to see him run for office.

Friendly suggestion: don't launch your political career in Hyde Park. That launching pad is already taken.

If I were Glen Beck as in Wreck, I think I'd start looking for another job.......

...He's just a hold over from talking head days of TV when a good voice and screen appearance was all that was necessary to read the teleprompter...
Posted by: Darin | November 11, 2009 8:32 PM

If that's true, then Lou Dobbs should run for presidient. It's the current POTHUS' only skill!

Dobbs is pretty much a "middle of the road" guy; he ripped on Bush more than he did Obama. Extremist loons like Beck (Fox) and Olberman (MSNBC) are nut-job entertainers who have little credibility. I always thought Dobbs was reasonable on most issues (and come on, who is really FOR illegal immigration?). Anderson Cooper seems like sensible person and maybe Dobbs' replacement?

Lou is not a racist. His wife is Hispanic and he did not discriminate in his hiring ever.

Politically, he's actually a populist, and much more of a centrist than most people believe. On CNN he may be right wing, but on Fox he would be left wing relative to others on the station.

Good Luck Lou!

Wow, it just kills you that Fox is untouchable in the ratings. You can rant and rave all you want..the numbers tell the truth. Hang on to your hats, libs, you are going to be seeing a lot of mutiny in the next few years, get used to it!!!

Good luck Lou! Thanks for exposing the illegal debacle. 17% actual unemployment and we have 13 million illegals here. Get out!

We call CNN the "I Love Obama" show and only turn it on to see what left wing nonsense they are spouting next and to listen to the refreshing clear-headedness of LOU DOBBS. He was the only port in the storm of idiocy on CNN, and now in their infinate wisdom, they let him go. If FOX was smart, it would snap him up in a second and replace one of Shepard Smith's time slots. Smith (who is totally ditzy most of the time), only takes up air time, and FOX would greatly benefit from LOU DOBBS' clear and concise reporting.

John King's going to replace his slot. I think CNN did the right thing to let him go. He was mainstreaming stuff that Fox and Beck has been ranting about - something CNN can do without. Have you'll seen how Colbert and Stewart talked about it? http://tiny.cc/6R172. Hilarious!

Soledad O’Brien is such a phony. In April 2008, Reverend Jeremiah Wright gave a speech in Detroit to the NAACP.  One of the things that  he said in this speech was that black and white children learn with different parts of their brain, and then gave an "unflattering imitation of the way white pastors speak."  Peoples comments were that he gave a racial speech. Soledad  O'Brien, on CNN, was quoted as saying, in a gushing manner, that the speech was a "home run" and "really funny." When questioned about the things he said in the speech, she would say things like, what he really meant was .....or what he wanted to say was... Once again she's covering the truth and being racist.  Just as with the Henry Gates incident.  In an appearance on Anderson Cooper, the night or so before CNN's "The Moment of Truth" she appeared enraged that it was a racial profile against Gates. She said that she got calls from her FRIENDS saying it was all about Gates being black.  She went on that show with the purpose, at all costs, to destroy the credibility of the white police officer and throw him under the bus.  When Cooper was talking she wanted to make the point that Gates said "Thank You" to the police officers.  By mentioning that, she was purposely misrepresenting the truth by playing down Gates' belligerence and racial remarks, which she didn't even mention.  Even Gates' attorney and friend, said to the media that he used very strong language. Colon Powell and President Obama both said he should take blame in the incident.  I have seen this in many occasions with her, where she doesn't speak the truth and hides the true facts.  Another time on Anderson Cooper, Cooper said to O'Brien that Senator John McCain hasn't brought race into the campaign, like he said he wouldn't.  You would think her response would have been something like, that's great because he shouldn't.  Instead she strongly insinuated that he would, even in the last week of the campaign. Also, her questioning style, in interviews  is completely different with a white person than it is with a black person.  Like in her interview with Henry Gates in "The Moment of Truth"  She just went along with his lies. I have seen several comments on various websites about her racism.  There are many other examples I could give of her racial bias, dishonesty and hypocrisy. She seems to consider herself to be black. She mentioned in an interview that her parents made it clear to her “you’re black” and that’s all there is to it.
She’s all about being #1, she wants the world to revolve around her. She comes first, before her family. She wants to be a celebrity figure and a star. In interviews she says she works 6 days a week, mostly out of town, and on some holidays. She goes to gala events, concerts, lots of entertainment events, as a single woman, leaving her husband and kids behind.
I think Soledad O’Brien is a very poor journalist. What ever happened to the days of CNN with Bernard Shaw and Judy Woodruff? They were honorable journalists. You could believe what they said. John Las Vegas
