by Mark Silva and updated with the pardons
President Barack Obama hasn't pardoned any people yet -- demonstrating a definitely deliberative tendency in the exercise of his constitutional clemency power -- but today he let a couple of turkeys go.
The White House pardoning of the Thanksgiving turkey, a high tradition that dates to President Harry Truman's time, played out on the North Portico today, where two turkeys -- one a stand-in for good measure -- were spared the holiday butcher's knives with a presidential sendoff to the ceremenonial task of riding in Disney's Thanksgiving Day parade.
The president pardoned a 48-pound bird named Courage, but not without noting that he'd just as soon eat "this sucker.''
The last president, who already was a lame duck when he pardoned his last birds, may have seemed a more natural fit for this fowl-excuse of an event, Bush of the brush-clearing Texas ranch persuasion. (See the photo of Bush below, by the AP's Gerald Herbert.) The citified Chicagoan who has moved into the White House may seem less suited for a hands-on experience with a wary turkey. But wait, Obama was a constitutional law professor, and there is an emerging legal field of animal rights.
Obama had daughters Malia and Sasha by his side, the two girls smiling wide as the president saluted the National Turkey Federation for donating this year's turkey, named Courage, from Goldsboro, N.C., and the alternate, named Carolina.
"Gobble, gobble,'' said Courage, interrupting Obama, who noted that Presidents Eisenhower and Johnson ate their turkeys.
"Thanks to the interventions of Malia and Sasha - because I was planning to eat this sucker - Courage also will be spared this terrible and delicious fate,'' Obama said.
"There are certain days that remind me of why I ran for this office,'' Obama said, "and then there are moments like this, when I pardon a turkey and send it to Disneyland.''
He went on to pardon Courage, before the first dog, Bo, got involved and "screwed up'' the pardon. -- "Is there an official gesture?''asked Obama, holding a hand up like a Star Wars warrior. "Courage, you are hereby pardoned, you will live in Disneyland.'' .
"He's like a large chicken,'' a daughter noted.
"He is like a large chicken,'' the father said. "I don't know about the haircut, though.''
(The ordinarily Rose Garden-picture-perfect ceremonywas moved to the cover of the portico on a mistiy morning on the eve of Thanksgiving, and is viewable, at White House's live-streaming Web-site.)
"I am humbled by the privilege that it is to serve, and I want to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to every service member at home or in harm's way,'' the president said, on a more serious note today. Tomorrow, he said, he and his family will "remember... this is a time when so many members of our American families are hurting... There is a long way to go and a lot of work to do.
"In more tranquil times, it's easierr to notice our many blessing... In times like this, they resonate more powerful,'' he said. "This is an era of new hardships and perils.. We are Americans, and for all this, we give our humble thanks... On this quintessential American holiday.''
.
In the actual constitutional pardon department, during two and a quarter centuries, only three presidents have proven slower than Obama in exercising their authority of executive clemency - granting either pardons or commutations of sentences to the convicted -- with thousands of applications pending at the Justice Department.
Our expert on this is P.S. Ruckman Jr, associate professor of political science at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Ill., who has noted that Obama recently passed Nixon with his reluctance to initial the first pardon -- Nixon, of course, got a pardon of his own later. The other four pardon ponderers were George Washington, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, who created quite a stir with his final day's pardons.

Will he pardon the one that looks like a turkey or will he pardon the one that looks like George Bush?
From the picture, it looks like McConnell like looking at the dark meat of the one that looks like Bush.

And in the spirit of the holidays, let's not forget how the Repuke frontrunner pardoned some turkeys last year:

According to the White House official website on the stimulus, President Obama "pardoned or saved" 630,000 turkeys!

I don't blame President Obama for pardoning the turkey and not having to eat it. Most turkeys being cooked this Thanksgiving are not like yesterday's birds. Today, commercially-produced turkeys stand toe-to-toe in huge poultry houses. The turkeys Grandma used to bake were raised in the pasture, got real sunshine and ate bugs. Their gizzards had gravel! Althoug the birds were sweet, the smell of their feathers in scalding water (to loosen the feathers) certainly was not sweet and the job of plucking a turkey by hand, not machine, was hard work. Ethic Soup has a funny post, "Help, Help Me Grandma! A Headless Turkey Is Chasing Me," at

Actually Ter, the sprouts will be on the leftover turkey sammies this weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving.

For the last two decades, the Republicans have steadily purged themselves of all moderates, of anyone who did not toe the party line, of anyone who did not support the party leaders with every fiber of their being. Under leaders like Tom DeLay and a dozen other of the top far-right powerbrokers, apostasy was ruthlessly punished. Moderates were primaried out, the religiously or socially tolerant were excoriated, the legislatively balanced were forced from their positions -- all in service to a supposed permanent ideological governance, one that valued ideological purity over all else. Over knowledge, over experience, over common sense, over the very fabric of the law -- the ideology of hard-right conservatism trumped it all. Toe the line, and you were granted jobs in the Bush administration, or positions of leadership in Iraq, or plum committee assignments. Voice disapproval -- you were nothing. You woke up the next morning to a White House Press Secretary declaring that you were a disgruntled brat, one with emotional or mental impairments that were responsible for your pitiable desertion.
After twenty years of purging, all the Republicans have left is that hard-right extreme (Teabaggers). They shoved everyone else out willingly: it seems hardly surprising that now, faced with the fruits of it all, they are finding that all constituencies of the nation that they sought to condemn, belittle or purge are no longer interested in supporting them now.
As far as I am concerned the last thirty years have proven modern conservatism to be not just ill conceived, but paranoid, divisive, willfully incompetent, obtusely premised, and in sum utterly valueless to the nation -- a waste of political oxygen. Something to be burned at the stake, and the ashes scattered, never to be heard from again.
But I expect they will, in the next years, at least try to retool their party into one that at least pretends to be more tolerant of, well, anyone not fully immersed in the notion that Ayn Rand and James Dobson rule the universe. The bloodshed between the two factions -- conservative true believers (Beck, Rush, Hannity etc) who can look at the last eight years and see absolutely nothing worth doing differently, nothing but a smashing but sadly misunderstood success, versus those that truly wish to temper the party in an effort to regain at least some semblance of their former power -- is a glorious thing to behold.

I am grateful every single day that the person sitting in that office (Pres Obama) was put there by the people, and he has tried to tackle the many things we need tackled.
What kind of America would we have today if we hadn't turned the Clinton era over to George Bush and his wars, his credit card reform legislation that turned banks into loan sharks, and his No Child Left Behind that turned the public schools into disaster areas of fiscal failure?

GOP Condemns Obama for Pardoning Turkey
In a move rich with tradition, today President Obama met briefly with reporters and photographers in the Rose Garden to announce the official pardon of "Courage" the White House turkey. Obama told a few jokes, patted the stately bird on its head, and returned to work.
"Just show me where in the Constitution it says that a president has the power to just wave his hand and pardon a turkey on Thanksgiving? Look, this isn't a partisan thing - I just want to know why this man hates our white Thanksgiving traditions."
- Glenn Beck
"I think what you see here is when you have someone who is pardoning, or in not pardoning, turkeys or birds of some kind they have a real duty to not be seen in doing that. Who gets to make a call like that?"
- Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin
"What kind of signal does this send to America's turkey enemies?"
- Bill O'Reilly
"This is clearly a capitulation to Obama's PETA-loving liberal base, and it's a move far outside the normal American mainstream."
- Rush Limbaugh (before unveiling a new song, sung by an impersonator of Rev. Al Sharption, which Limbaugh entitled "Jive Turkey")
"Rrrrrarr... Turkey."
- Former Vice President Dick Cheney
"Turkey... Rrrrarrr."
- Former What Was She? Liz Cheney
In addition: a variety of small, downhome grassroots organizations like the "NRA" and the Dick Armey Astroturf group "Teabaggers against Socialized Turkey Farms" called for a series of "Turkey Party" rallys across the nation in protest of Obama's move.
When reached for comment, White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters, "The President understands these concerns, the president shares these concerns, and we just ask that everyone remember that the president already has a lot on his plate this Thanksgiving, and we should not get sidetracked by these distractions." As of press time, there were reports that the White House was scheduling a "Turkey Summit" for the president to meet with the turkey and several members of the Republican House Caucus, to share a conversation over a tall, hot glass of gravy.

A big Thanksgiving greeting to T Herman Zweibel for reminding us of that iconic photo of George W. [worst president ever] Bush and his fake turkey & trimmings on a platter mugging it up for the grunts.
Mercifully for him, history doesn't record what those soldiers really thought about his posing antics at their expense.
Truth be told, some of the harshest and most obscene commentary on the Bush Dynasty comes from those soldiers......
Bush & fake turkey on a platter:
Second in inconic status only to Bush in front of "mission accomplished" banner.

How about, we pardon the other turkey in that second picture, Bush&Cheney ??
In spite of how he left America, in its worse economic crisis since the Great Depression, two unfinanced wars and occupations, an unfinanced drug bill and of course, the highest debt in our nation's history. He desperately needs a pardon, given his legacy !!
I am gratefully thankful, that he, Bush&Cheney, is no longer gobbling at our White House !!
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone !

Does anyone remember or care what a pardon is ? Wikipedia: A pardon is the forgiveness of a crime and the penalty associated with it. What crime could possibly have been committed by the turkeys in question (or any turkey) that might warrant a pardon ? People who distort the moral scenario by their thinking and self-righteous talk of "pardoning" turkeys could indeed be pardoned, but I'm not sure that they should be.
Posted by: Rene M Finkler | November 28, 2009 5:34 AM
Ter,
No weak stomach here. As a kid, I grew up in western Michigan in the woods on a lake. Pretty familiar with how food gets to the table. Actually, we had a field trip in third grade to the now defunct Bil-Mar turkey farm in Holland where we were allowed to watch turkeys strung up by their necks and run across an electric wire.
I don't care about the turkeys in the Palin snippet, but I would suggest you watch it again and actually listen to how pathetically stupid the Repug frontrunner is. Completely incapable of anything other than rambling right wing talking points.
BTW, not quite sure what this "refutting" business is all about.
Posted by: Bubba ✔ | November 28, 2009 12:00 PM
Bubba,
When you made you initial remark, I thought it was about the process of getting turkeys get the dining room table, thus my remark about sprouts.
As far as what Palin sounds like - no worse than Gore, Edwards, Kerry, Bush, Biden, McCain or BO w/o TOTUS.
