The Swamp

by Julian E. Barnes and Christi Parsons and updated

Key players in President Barack Obama's war team are getting ready to testify before Congress about Afghanistan, a sign that a decision about a new war strategy -- and announcement about troop build-up -- is coming soon.

The president will likely announce his decision on Afghanistan in a televised address, possibly as early as Tuesday, a senior administration official said this morning.

Tuesday is "a good candidate" for an address, the official said, although the White House has not decided if the president will actually speak from the Oval Office.

The first to testify on Capitol Hill will probably be Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, one government official said.

Army Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal and U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry also have been told to prepare to testify soon after Obama's announcement.

Word of the preparations came after Obama met with his war council late Monday night, the tenth session in the president's war review. McChrystal has asked for 40,000 additional troops in Afghanistan, and Obama is considering whether to grant the request for forces.

More on the war preparations are here, in today's Tribune newspapers.

Wonder how the right will react to a war tax.

In other words, Obama's decided to give yet another speech!
What a thrill!
Talking (and spending other people's money) is what he's good at.

This is a JOKE and its not funny when men and women are dying. The media should be up this clowns butt about how long it takes him to do what he was always going to do ... show a small effort and then cut and run. In 18 months US troops will be home and AQ will be here and in Europe fully functional again. More Bill Clinton diplomicy through disengagement until its too late

Good news. The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 42 percent of the nation's voters Strongly Disapprove of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Only 27 percent Approve giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -15.
This is the lowest Approval Index rating yet measured for President Obama . Let's continue to stand strong against Obama and his Marxist schemes to destroy our freedoms and wealth.

Every day I read...decision coming soon. What a crock! At the very least our troops won't have help til the Spring. I think his Majesty the O should go over there and BOW to our troops who are putting their lives on the line for their Commander-in-Thief

A war tax? little bill, you are seriously deranged but then Bush is still in charge in your mind so..............

Meanwhile back on earth, the president turns to his minions to handle the dirty work while he takes the global platform giving meaningless speaches to people who could care less about a US President who won't take the lead in his own country.

This is Obama's war and if he can't take control himself, then you sheeple might as well bury your little heads in the dung pile together.

Just remember the Obama war cry! It's Bush's fault!

Lather, rinse, repeat.

Still can't figure out why it takes this administration 3 months to figure out his plans for troop deployment, but they try to ram healthcare bills through in days......

BillyR,

Is the war tax across the board and everyone pays or is this just another excuse for the libs to "soak the job-creators"? Will the war tax end when the war ends unlike the tax to fund the Spanish-American War tax that ended in 2006?

What did you all expect???It took him 6 months to pick out a dog...He's a campaigner not a decision maker. What was it Hillary said, "no time for on the job training". Well that's what you get when you vote a kindergartener into office.

The stupid wingnuts are here again! One person says that Obama's war cry is "Blame Bush". I have yet to hear him say that. Why is a decision on Afghanistan taking so long? What is long? World War I was on for 3 years before the US got involved. World War II was on for 2 years before the US got in. Plus, if I were President, I wouldn't be so quick to throw away American lives. But I guess it's easy for the armchair commandos here that won't actually have to face guns.

Obama's decisions will determine whether Afghanistan will forever be known as "Obama's War." History will be more kind to Obama than to Bush. .........

Billy,

A better idea would be to shift all the money the gov't has been spending on global warming know that everyone knows that it is a fraud.

Wonder how long the "genius" would have needed to make a decision if first granny and michele were fighting on the front lines. This "guy" is nothing but a travisty and shame.

I heard today that Obama will most likely send in 30,000+ more living American men and women to Afghanistan.

*
So, it's true? Obama went to the same school of economics as W. Bush--the school that teaches it is guns AND butter, not guns OR butter. The same school that says to print the monopoly money as fast as you can.

*
Obama would be delusional in thinking he can send in 30,000+ more American citizens--with no guarantee of any "win"--AND have us pay for national health care on top of that. Not going to happen. He will lose everything for himself and for all of us. He'd be stupid and naive. It has to be one or the other, Bub. It has to be life here--or dying for the corrupt there. Limited resources say you can't have it both ways. What would Obama's mother or grandmother advise? Time to rule out the death mongers and shield our backs from the corrupt.

*
Welcome to the new world order where the USA is diminished and broke--like Russia and Great Britain were after their wars. Really--Russia is advising that Afghan is "unwinnable". Eight and 1/2 years advises me that Afghan is "unwinnable". Besides, "winning" is immaterial, anyway. While the rest of the "coalition" is pulling back in Afghan, the pentagon generals--the ones in charge of Obama--seem to have won their job security, and more long term depression for Americans. The pentagon has won for itself all kinds of depression that has brought on so many more suicides in civilian families as well as suicides in the military. Obama--now seemingly voting for and allowing the killing of more Americans in all different kinds of ways. Obama and his probable troop increase are not good for any Americans other than the ones who get paychecks from the pentagon. Obama's "change" was total bull. We all know that we don't need more boots on the ground to die--and to break us even more financially by costing us 1 million dollars per pair of troop boots. Or, is it 1 million dollars per life. That would be 58 (+-) million dollars a month since the average number of American deaths lately in Afghanistan has been about 58 (+-). 58 x 12 = 696 (+-) new deaths per yearjust in Afghan. And, for how many years? These are just the deaths. This doen't include all the new American orphans and widows (ers), all the new brain damaged soldiers, or all the new living paraplegic soldiers. Send everyone sitting behind a desk at the pentagon and at the White House first. Then we'll think about more soldiers.

*
Why are the nations in Europe and the Mid East--the ones closest physically to Afghanistan--and in more alleged danger of Iran's nukes--not offering more money, lives and depression? Many of the "coalition" have pulled back. Those temporary alliances are not such great alliances any more. They've said our military leaders are "martians". The "alliances" smartened up. It should be NATO and those nations with more at risk who should now deplete themselves, not America--again.

*
Now, a "surge" ? Perhaps NATO bombing the problems at the Afghan borders and then burning the poppy fields are all that's needed. What do the NATO boys think THEY should do? The "surge" in Iraq? You mean the big American money pro-up there? It's been in the news--and we all know that once we are gone from Iraq--the nation Bush rebuilt with 53 billion+ American dollars--it will crumble. The shoddy contracted work and leadership are already crumbling. And, Iraq is recently reported to be the 4th most corrupt nation in the world. Bush and Cheney literally created--flatened, then rebuilt--the 4th most corrupt nation in the world--out of a total of 194 nations recognized in the world. Afghanistan is the 2nd most corrupt in the world--out of 194 nations. Both cesspools receive billions of American taxpayer dollars from sitting American presidents and sitting House and Senate people. It's not our mission to clean up cesspools. Obama--why continue to take my future away for your own stand for nothing, corrupt places? Bullies in the pentagon--and now Obama--are screwing us. I hate their stealing and throwing our life savings away. They won't allow us to buy goodness or a future for ourselves here with our own money. They force us to use our own money to support the corrupt and bad, black holes over there. Congratulations Bush, Cheney and the brass in the pentagon--wasters of any wealth and spirit we might still have. They have it all backwards. Citizens and non-military brass--along with our private earnings--are NOT sacrificed for military brass survival and glee.
*

30,000+ more living American men and women to be sent to Afghanistan? Time to dig out the 'No More War' protest yard signs. Time to vote all D & R incumbents out. Time to make the Teabaggers' Joker face of Obama into a Grim Reaper face of Obama. Time to buy stocks in caskets, and to turn to The Great Depression web sites. Does anyone know how to make stone soup? Does anyone know how to help worn out and mentally broken down soldiers who just want to live and to raise their families?

It's time to resurrect FDR, HST or JFK. Let's get a "real" Democrat president not an apologist to the rest of the world for the nation that has been the leader in keeping it (relatively) free through wars - world and otherwise. for the past century or so. What our troops must feel like knowing their military leaders have asked for more support months ago and the man in the Oval Office who has to make the decision can't.

PS....they always complain when there is a little "skin" in the game.

Pss...Terry you can't complain about "that" war tax...it was by another president so it has no bearing on anything. Ask springtop!

Can you see Franklin D. Roosevelt announcing after Pearl Harbor that he'd take a couple months to decide what to do about the Japanese attack?

And then announce--another speech?

Ok, I think I have his racket down now. When faced with a difficult decision (substitute any issue of national importance): Realize you were wrong about issues of (again substitute) national security, don't do anything; wait, wait, and then wait some more.... Then make the decision you should have made a long time ago, which I'm guessing goes against your original promise but the right thing to do. But like a genius say, "I took my time to make this decision because as we witnessed with the last administration we can't rush and make choices that are not in the best interest of our country, you know like the last administration". By now, everyone forgot you went back on your original (wrong) plan. HERO! What a spinmaster

What an out and out shame!. That we have a President whose manhood should be questioned. I am beginning to wonder if he has any gonads. We have troops that are suffering on a daily basis. Horrible, wounds and in to many instances death, while he has another meeting, or a tv interview or photo op. He should be impeached for malfeasance of office..

Disgusted,

From today's speech ""after eight years, some of those years in which we did not have, I think, either the resources or the strategy to get the job done, it is my intention to finish the job."

Who do you think he was referring to when he was talking about resources or the strategy not being provided to get the job? I'm sure your fellow flatliners will clue you in.

Joker,

Your FDR analogy is a little off since we are fighting a war on extremists that actually attacked us OVER EIGHT YEARS AGO. And why is it that we are still there? Oh yeah, Barack's predecessor, the worst president ever, decided to take his eye off the real enemy to start a senseless preemptive war in Iraq based on a pack of lies.

Keep enjoying your kool aid dunce.

The American Afghan. Ambassador Eikenberry has already opposed a troop build up in Afghanistan. He said it would do no good. If Eikenberry flips and says on Tuesday--or whenever they give the show--that more troops are needed, we will conclusively know that the Pentagon is the shadow USA government--and that Obama has been bought. We'll also know that there is no real dem. or repub. divide--only a few controllers. The dem. and repub. thing is only a ploy to divide and conquer the rest of us--those that the controllers see as the worker bees and pawns. These men are not men--sending others to die and to be separated from their families and communities. Why die for chickenhawks who have their heads up their @$$? It's time to have hearings in civilian courts as to the the mucked up decisions made by the military deciders for the past eight and 1/2 years. They can't keep mucking up, killing us with no gain, then say, oh well, we will just spend more $$$$$$ and let more die--and hey, we'll have another surge. No. No more BS. Surges are band-aids to hold for a time, so the can will be kicked down the road further--depleating us to the end. The abusive, dumb and ugly USA military brass and Pentagon are blood-sucking leaches of American life. The Brits are seeing the light and getting it right.

Well, he could put on a flight suit and be taxied onto an aircraft carrier and declare mission accomplished.......no wait, that's been done.
Oh I know, he could tell us we'll be greeted as liberators in the counrty and.....no wait again. Now I got it, he could claim we are bring peace and stability to the Middle East and it won't cost us a cent as money from the oilfields will pay for everything.......uh, no....
Frankly, I like the fact that he's acting like the POTUS and not like some kind of business failure cowboy from Maine.

;
What was Obama's Pearl Harbor? I've combed the newspapers and I don't see anywhere that Afghanistan attacked America.
PS How is that Bush/Cheney stayed the course in Afghanistan for 8 YEARS and you were silent, now Obama has been in office for 10 months and you want a decision immediately?

The U.S. will not prevail in Afghanistan. It is an unwinnable quagmire. There are no objectives or exit strategy in place. Why waste any resources on the third poorest country on the planet?? The puppet Afghan government is corrupt and inept. There should be a phased withdrawal of all U.S. forces, effective immediately. McChrystal and his entire staff should be fired out of hand.
This so called war on terror is nothing but a Republican buzzword. A scare tactic by the cowards and fear mongers.

Yeah, those were Republicans on those planes on 9/11/2001, Osama is a Republican, and Hassan was a Republican too. Geez.

Obama promised an end to the pointless wars. Why are we there anyway ? I shudder in horror each time another young man or woman dies and now more troops to be sent? Today the death notice of a young man age 22 from Crystal Lake appears. He had a wife and baby. Poor guy likely wanted job training or and education and now his baby will never know her own father and for what ?

Here is news the Chicago Tribune and its Swamp would never dare report for fear of irritating its triune boss -- Barack Obimbo, David Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel.Seems the Brits have tired of Obama's dithering, act and BS:

.
Re: Afghanistan, it's not winnable, period. The culture of corruption, tribal loyalties, an economy based on Opium, and a dozen other factors will result in more blood and treasure spilled and nothing gained. Iraq will revert to violence once we leave, too. Wasted lives, wasted trillions, for nothing. And the biggest threat is still Pakistan, which already has Nukes. As Dennis Miller says."I may be wrong, but that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it".
And you people who are bitching about Obama's re-examining of the Afghan strategy are seriously retarded. It's something Johnson should have done on Vietnam. What make's you so certain the generals have all the answers. MacArthur overplayed his hand in Korea, and brought the Chinese in. LeMay would have bombed Cuba and started WW lll. All these chickenhawk cowboys on the right are why we're in this mess in the first place.

And you fools who use sloganeering and RNC talking points to define a complicated, difficult situation, make me sick. If you read McCrystal's own account of the Afghan situation, you would know why Obama is taking his time to study this. At stake is another war that could exceed trillions, and the lives of thousands.
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/30493567/the_generals_revolt/2
Grow up, people. You cry about how stimulus funds (that actually are applied domestically) will be such a huge burden to repay. What about spending hundreds of billions more on Afghanistan? Many are of the opinion that the tens of billions we've already spent on aid and reconstruction has been squandered:
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/Special/2009/08/07/Outside-View-Afghanistan-reconstruction-poised-for-failure/UPI-26061249657200/
http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2009/05/how-much-cash-hasve-we-wasted-in-afghanistan/
That's money that adds to the national debt, too, yet it's hard to find any benefit from emptying the Treasury. The generals concede that if (and that's a big if) our efforts succeed there, it will be at least another decade. Can we afford that, and will it be lasting? Let McCain blow his top, and Beck cry his tears. We need to get this right. Personally, I like Joe Biden's strategy for Afghanistan, but it looks like O.B. is leaning toward McCrystal's plan, which I think will ultimately fail. I hope I'm wrong.

Doug R-

Are you not concerned about a resurgent Taliban-if we leave abruptly- being so close to nuclear arms in Pakistan with its equally corrupt and shaky government?

Worlds colliding for lefties. On one hand, they want to believe that there is no problem with violent Muslim extremists, and that George Bush is the real terrorist. On the other hand, they adore Obama, and cannot admit to him doing anything wrong. So watching them try to reconcile Obama escalating a war in the heart of a Muslim country to fight Islamic extremists is entertaining. Most liberals, when they feel like they are backed into a corner, just start babbling incoherently about George Bush. Never mind that currently there is one man, who in his sole discretion, can either end or escalate the Afghan War. There is one man, who in his sole discretion, has the power to send more Americans to fight and die against Muslim extremists. The question is this – will any lefties hold Obama accountable and stand by their principles? Vivian does. The rest in this blog, not so much. Man-crushes on Obama trump principle. Fall in line lefties, and next week when BO announces he is sending more troops to Afghan, pretend that you support that decision.

heartburn--the people in the Mid East and in Europe need to be more afraid than you. However, they have not put up as many soldiers to die or as many Great Recession/Depresssion dollars as America has. Why? There should be a direct correlation between physical proximity to alleged resurgents/nukes and the human/monetary resources wasted. Hello NATO, Europe and other do nothing Mid East nations--do more for yourselves. Or, pull out as other 'alliances' have as a result of fading interest in the civil war there among the warlords. American presidents and lawmakers have chosen to offer up too many American lives and treasure in the region. Why? The pentagon wants your child's blood and life for nothing. No, perhaps they want your child's blood and life for their own importance and job security. The big boys and girls at the pentagon, in the WH, and in both Houses are chickenhawks--they have no problem spending other peoples' money or life. They will gladly sacrifice your life or your treasure. We can't afford to take care of the world or their fears. We can't afford to be the reason for their fears, either.

BTW, the earth has been cooling the past decade, why aren't you flatliners happy about that?

Posted by: Vivian | November 25, 2009 11:56 AM

You’re talking in degrees-
Europe should be more afraid then me- I agree, does this change anything? Does this make the threat go away? Are you OK with a Taliban governed Afghanistan having access to Pakistani nukes or not? These are the stakes of our leaving... do you think the Taliban will honor our leaving and stay inside the borders of Afghanistan if we leave? Will they NOT allow Al Queda to re-open terrorist training camps?
The reality is that Europe has a long history of ignoring dangerous leaders in their own neighborhood- and then looking to the US for military help...(this history, ignored by Professor Obama BTW-) why should we expect them to do anything different now?
Since WW2 and the formation of NATO we are obligated by treaty to treat an attack on NATO allies as an attack on us... Putting us right back where we are now. The only exception is that we now would have an Islamo-Facist nut job government with nukes as a bargaining chip
Your post is an exercise in distraction- you are hung up on figuring out why someone is breaking into your house instead of making yourself and your family safe from the threat. Every president OWNS the history of past presidents decisions as well as the path forward – Proffessor Obama, like you, chooses to look at issues in terms of what happened and how he would have done them differently - this works in UofC lecture halls, and makes for interesting case studies in how bad Western Civ is… but this does not work when you have the responsibility to defend our country and live up to treaties we have signed.

terry the teabagger:

BTW, the earth has been cooling the past decade, why aren't you flatliners happy about that?

Volcanoes tend to have that effect on climate...this is about climate change. It's happened before and it will happen, again.

Always wrong,

"this is about climate change. It's happened before and it will happen, again." You are correct, the climate does change - it warms, it cools; man has nothing to do with it.

terry of teabagistan:

wow:
"this is about climate change. It's happened before and it will happen, again."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did not say that but I will say this: we have a responsibility to the future generations not to
pollute, pillage or destroy this planet, not for any price.
This is just plain old consideration and responsibility. I am sure we can agree on this.
NATO is saying this evening they will send a TOTAL of 10,000 troops to Afghanistan. And we, singularly, ALREADY have 68,000 there? So, that is what all of NATO thinks of the few threats in Afghanistan. We are no better, and no smarter than NATO. Sorry folks. Good luck on that one, Obama.
*
Given the GOP & military's history of lies and bad judgment (WMDs-not, lack of troop IED protection--all resources for Iraq who never attacked us--little resources for the places where OBL?? supossedly was--the lies--"there will be few casualties in Iraq"--"it will be a quick war"--"oil will pay for it all"--"we will be greeted as liberators") I would believe NATO over the pumped-up GOP Pentagon ANY DAY . We already out spend and out die all NATO nations combined. It's total BS that American military brass say we NEED to send 30-40 thousand more American soldiers to the ever-changing pit. It looks like a ring through Obama's nose held by the abusive Pentagon. The boys in the Pentagon have been doing their thing all along. It's a shame that scared, wimpy Obama says, push me over with a feather, McChrystal. The Pentagon officers slap McChrystal on the back and offer him cigars in the backrooms of the Pentagon for out horse-trading Obama in the request game.
*
There is no 'nation' to beat in Afghanistan. There is no 'nation' to build there--with shoddy private contractor work. That Afghan territory will never be centrally minded or controlled. Who does Obama and the Pentagon think they are? So--OK--dream big--we think we win--then the warlords and factions morph into something totally different. The Ho Chi Minh Trail always morphed and changed, too. WE LOST!!! The N. Vietnamese continued to be funded and supplied--no matter what the "smart" dufus Pentagon did. There is no end to the BS. And, there has been no end to the Iraq BS. It will morph and burn there, too. It's the nature of the beast over there. It's total hubris in thinking they can change integral beliefs and nature there. We need to take care of our own doorstep.
*
We have an ELECTED leader (with constituants) who supposedly decides this stuff. The boys in the Pentagon don't speak for the electorate. McCrystal, et al need to go to hell. Obama needs to listen to the vast majority of Americans who say, hell no to Afghanistan. Remove those bullies with the pumped-up regalia on their uniforms.
*
I don't want to pay taxes for unnecessary military build-ups and nation building on a pile of sand in corrupt and different-minded places. No taxes to promote butt heads in the Pentagon, either. Ask ALL other NATO nations. This is the Pentagon hijacking our tax dollars and our future. It's time to go to court due to the lies, waste and the horrible "leadership" at the Pentagon. They are snakes and squirrels that leak information in order to coerce the President--and, yet, he takes it and bends to their threats. Puke. The House and the Senate need to jump on board and allow--or disallow--or change the laws to help us. Anyone with a ring through his nose is incapable of governing.
Always wrong,
Do you really want to make that statement "not to
pollute, pillage or destroy this planet, not for any price."?
Since you are using electricity to run your computer, you are polluting the planet. Since you drive a car, you are pillaging the planet of its natural resources. Be careful in absolutes.
Your statement has to be made with common sense guidelines. However today air pollution prvention is done in the name of stopping global warming or now climate change since the plaent is cooling. That is the bogus part of this environmental religion.
