Unemployment surpasses 10 percent: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Don Lee

The nation's unemployment rate surged to 10.2 percent in October, reaching double digits for the first time in 26 years, the Labor Department reported today.

The unexpected sharp increase, from 9.8 percent in September, came as employers dropped 190,000 workers from their payrolls last month. That was larger than the 175,000 job losses that most forecasters were expecting for the month, and it underscored just how dire the labor market remains despite the recent upturn in the nation's economic output.

Unemployment had been steadily rising in recent months, but the double-digit figure is likely to have a major psychological impact as well as potentially significant consequences in Washington.

"It's an important political threshold," said Robert Reich, the former labor secretary under the Clinton administration who now teaches at the University of California at Berkeley.

With the mid-term elections looming next year, he said, "the 10 percent is going to give Republicans more ammunition to criticize the [Obama] administration and force the hand of the administration to at least appear to be taking additional steps to remedy the situation."

In fact, White House aides, in apparent anticipation of the bad statistical news, said President Obama was scheduled this morning to sign a bill that would extend jobless benefits to the long-term unemployed and expand tax-relief programs for homebuyers and businesses operating at a loss.

The last time the jobless rate crossed double digits was during the recession and initial recovery period of the early 1980s. Then, unemployment hit 10.1 percent in September 1982 and stayed at or above that level, rising to a high of 10.8 percent, until June the following year. In the mid-term election in November 1982, then President Ronald Reagan and the Republicans lost control of the House.

This time around, unemployment has risen even faster and, by some analysts' reckoning, could hover around 10 percent for much longer. The jobless rate at the start of this year was 7.6 percent and it was a mere 4.9 percent in late 2007 when the latest recession officially began. Since then, the number of unemployed workers has increased by 8.2 million to 15.7 million as of October, according to figures compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The labor situation is actually worse than what these figures and the 10.2 percent rate show. The government doesn't count as officially unemployed the so-called discouraged workers who have given up looking for jobs - which in October numbered 808,000, up from 484,000 a year earlier.

There were also 9.3 million people who reported they had little choice but to work part-time because their hours had been cut or they could not find full-time jobs. If this group and discouraged workers are included, along with others on the fringe of the labor market, the nation's unemployment and underemployment rate in October was 17.5 percent.

The unemployment rate is estimated based on the government's monthly survey of about 60,000 households. A separate survey of about 160,000 private and public employers - which many analysts consider more revealing of the job market trends -- showed an employment loss of 190,000 jobs in October.

Since late 2007, payroll employment has fallen by about 7.3 million. Manufacturing and construction have taken the biggest hits, and those industries continued to shed jobs in October. Factory payrolls fell 61,000 over the month, and construction lost 62,000 jobs.

The retail sector, heading into the holiday season, trimmed 40,000 positions last month.

Health-care employment rose 29,000 over the month. And in a potentially significant sign, the temporary help industry, usually a harbinger of broader hiring, added 34,000 jobs last month.

While the Obama White House spends its time trying to pass a so-called Health Reform Bill, attacking Fox News as not being a real news outlet, and acting holier than thou (remember our President won the Nobel Peace Prize for what we still do not know) Unemployment has risen to 10.2%. And if current trends are correct and continue Unemployment will continue to raise. Many of those lost jobs are probably not coming back. In the meantime our elected officials in Washington spend their time trying to pass Trillion Dollar Plus Programs, increasing the Deficit to levels never seen in this country that even dwarf the Bush Deficits, and thinking of ways of sneaking in new taxes hoping the public will not notice. Folks, the Economy is going to Hades and our elected officials, including the President, seem to not have a clue on what is really going on.

We need more stimulus. It is that simple. Another WPA would be just what the doctor ordered. Or do we want another Great Depression, with 25% unemployment? Is that what we want or do we want America to begin to roll again. A good beginning would be to round up all of those Weasels on Wall Street, who caused this recession/depression !! Throw all of those cheats and crooks in jail !!
Let's do it, let's begin, again, with a new Works Project. Our schools, our roads, our bridges need to be rebuilt, or we will have more collapses, God forbid. That is the only real solution to the economic state, in which, the Bush&Cheney fringe has left America. Re-build America, now !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

In other words, an ever growing number of Americans have to sit on the unemployment line until next year by design. Why? So in 2010, Barack Obama and the Democrats can run on falling unemployment. They’d rather you starve now so they can have recovery happen in an election year.

The Pelosi/Obama stimulus bill has failed the American public.

Next we will have the health care bill and cap and trade legislation that will finish off the future of the United States.

We are looking forward to massive deficits, an increased national debt, sky-rocketing taxes and eventually inflation that we have not experienced since the days of Jimmy Carter.

I hate to say this but we were better off under George W. Bush.

Hey, " Pat H ", ask all of those families that lost loved ones in Bush's Blunder in Baghdad, if we are better off under Bush&Cheney !! You've been a Bush&Cheney fringe cheerleader from the get-go, so you can put away that phony " I hate too....". Your bushing, again !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

These Democrats are truly clueless. They are spending trillions of dollars at a frenzied pace while the economy craters and america burns. 2010 can't get here soon enough.

All these "Economists" are ALWAYS surprised. When the economy was NOT losing jobs they could not understand why not as many jobs were created as forecast by their models. Now when the economy is in the tank they again cannot understand why the losses are greater than the predictions. So these "Smart" economists still CANNOT get their models right. How many DECADES will go by until they can accurately measure anything. Are hey too smart to redo their models? Or are they to full of themselves?

What the Swamp won't report:
1. Wall Street Journal
Shoppers cautiously re-emerged in October at both the low-priced and upscale ends of the market, pushing retail sales for the month up modestly from October 2008, the second straight gain after a year of declines.
2. Gallup.com Gallup’s Job Creation Index increased to +3 last week, closing in on its high for the year. Gallup's Economic Confidence and Consumer Spending measures also improved compared with the prior week.

The only people that didn't expect this unemployment rate are the liars in this administration. After spending 100s of billions on social welfare and bailing out corrupt state government, they now express surprise that saddling the country with debt didn't produce jobs. Anyone with half a brain running a business wouldn't hire additional people with the corrupt liars in the white house andcongress doing their best to stifle the economy. Anyone that shows a modest sign of success is immediately demonized by our facist in chief.

You fools just spent $250,000 on each teaching job you claimed to have created, Ignoring the fact that your job numbers are completely overstated. What do you think the multiplier effect is when your admin costs are more than double the underlying salary? Is this how you fools will run healthcare, 30% to the patient and 70% for yourselves?

You fools are completely incompetent, lying scum. If you wanted to help the economy and lower unemployment, you would get the ell out of the way and quit paying off the lazy and stupid.

Crooks,

I'm as cynical about politicians as the next guy, but you've stepped over into paranoia, haven't you fella?

Help! We need jobs. Employers aren't going to add jobs when they have to worry about new taxes on health insurance. And, we have lost lots of jobs already on "cap and trade." A lot of utility jobs on coal projects were cut. Also, raising taxes in January 2011 will be killer, too. Help! Turn around this economic environment. Cut taxes, cut regulations, junk "cap and trade".

I'm afraid we are going to be in for
more bad news. The way things are going I would not be surprised if it
reaches 12 or 15 pct. It begs the
question where the Hell are the 4-5 millions jobs this loser promised.

Depot Jim @ 9:30 a.m., I agree with u, but would have to exclude the word “probably”. Those lost jobs are NOT coming back. The tide rolls out, the tide rolls in, but when it does, it never seems to restore everything back to the way that it was before.

The democrats are winning the war against energy development to a degree that not even they realize. There will be very long-term fundamental change$ that most Americans will come to regret for many year$ to come. We will surely have to find all of those extra dollar$$$ that we all have in our personal budget$ for significantly higher home and tran$portation energy co$t. We will need to also show some patience and resilience to endure the shortages, outages, and inconvenience that will likely occur also. U had better fall in love with those windmills because this is not the type of stuff that turns on a dime. This will become a nice little lesson in Microeconomic$ as opposed to all of the recent lessons in Macroeconomic$ which our liberal friends clearly do not grasp. Everyone have a nice Viernes…

Thank you, Barack....

Does anyone remember how he promised that his "stimulus" would keep unemployment below 8%? That without the "stimulus", unemployment would be --shudder--9%!
There is a chart, based on Obama's own numbers, showing the failure of Obamanomics:
http://ace.mu.nu/archives/294455.php

Unemployment is at 10.2%??? How is this even possible?

My Obama Approved Unemployment Graph doesn't go past 8%.

Oh yeah, forgot to add...

10.2% unemployement is racist! RACIST I tell you!!!

Hey Don Fitzgerald

When are you going to actually contribute something that actually shows signs of inteligence? You troll all the swamp boards spouting how you want everything free but never offer anything with substance. I think its time you become part of the solution and quit being the cause of the problem. Since you seem to have so much free time on your hands I suggest you read the book, Out Of The Ashes by William Johnstone. At least you will learn your fate.

Where are Obama's incentives for private businesses to add employees? All they read about are more taxes, more government interference, and new federal programs that will increase -- not reduce -- their costs. If Obama's aim is to have everyone on the government payroll, ala the Soviet Union, he's well on his way.

1. Don’t be surprised to find out that the real unemployment rate is already over 11%. You see, the Department of Labor’s unemployment statistics exclude those who have stopped looking for work, and it doesn’t count those who are self-employed but making no money. I might add that the number of those who have quit looking for work (and should, therefore, be counted in a realistic unemployment figure) is significant.
.
2. I didn’t believe BO and Co. when they made the outlandish promise of creating millions of jobs. The failure of the White House to produce millions of jobs isn’t so much proof that the specific stimulus plan was a failure, as much as it is proof that the federal government has a lot less control over the economy than many would like us to believe. The government has no realistic method of making the private sector create sustainable jobs unless it can make hiring more profitable, or at least less onerous than not hiring. That’s not going to happen while it continues to add new financial burdens for existing employees and/or for each new employee.

Not a minute goes by when BO doesn't save another job. His most impressive feat so far is "saving" 473 teaching jobs in a school district that employs only 290 teachers total. Wow. Now that's impressive. Pass the kool aid.

Bush does not hold the office anymore. And, Iraq is all but done thanks to team Bush. And Team Obama is messing up in the other part of the war. Now go back to the TV you are missing the Special Ed (Schultz) Show. Or try to bring something to the table.

The Real Unemployment Rate, measures discouraged workers who aren't actually looking for work stands at 17.5% as of Nov 6 2009. Why is the MSM not reporting this? They do when a Republican is in the WH.
.

The real people already knew that unemployment was over 10%.... Its only Bozos who think the stock market reflects the real man and woman in America.

John W,

The real unemployment rate (U6) is 17.6%.

FITZ,

Do you want to ask the families of the soliders and marines that have died since January 20, 2009? How is BO doing "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW"?

Chris,

I thought would appreciate a picture of that graph

Against all odds, the Houston Chronicle is turning into a real newspaper. Somebody apparently is diluting the Koolaid. The Chronicle has expropriated a story that states that Mustapha's wind turbines will come from some country called China. An estimated 2,000 to 3,000 new jobs will be created. In China. Just when I thought that I had spotted the incestuous relationship between Chuckie Schumer and GE, this development surfaces. First NJ, now NY. They are busting me inside with the curveball.

So, not only will there be low density, low reliability, deceptively expensive, lame, wind energy to contend with, but the hardware that gins it out, if we can be magnanimous enough to go that far, will be manufactured in the Peoples Republic of China.

According to Gary Larson ~ In Hell, Everything will be Hot, except the coffee. Satan has more or less thought of everything. The democrats haven’t done too shabby of a job in covering all of the angles either.

The Left forgets so fast. Was it not Obama that said it would not go above 8%. Was it not Team Obama who's deficit grow by 3 times what is was a year ago. Bush messed up but Team Obama has just made it 3 times worse. When is the Left going to stop blaming Bush for what Team Obama has done and is doing. Did the 3rd not show the Left anything.

And the Tea Party on Wednesday was near 20k. Not bad when you think they put it together in just three days. And the Washington Post as been called out for their bad reporting on this story.

PalePigeon38,

Just what did the GOP do to cause the recession?

What the Hell Tea rry! Before Bush got into office in 2001 we were not at war with anyone, we had a budget surplus, we did not have a 800 billion dollar deficit, we didn't have a lot of crooks in Washington, we didn't have 46 million citizen's without health care, we were not giving our tax money to evangelist shool vouchers, we didn't want wall street getting their claws on the social security funds, (good thing that didn't transpire) and we didn't have the wealthy people of this country raiding our treasury (huge tax cuts for the wealthy)and putting ours nation in debt and at risk. Bush raised the debt limit five times while he was in office. Did you know that 1 percent of the citizen's in this country control 95 percent of the money! That has to change! Remember the republicans never do anything for this nation they only do things to this nation! whiteagle38

PalePigeon38,

We were not at war before 2001, since the previous occupant of the White House did nothing to stop terrorism against this country.

We had a PROJECTED budget surplus before 2001. That's because the previous occupant of the White House spent no money on fighting terrorism. Also, he had a responsible GOP Congress that reigned in domestic spending. Sadly, when a GOP Congress got a GOP President, that spending restraint left the building and passed irresposnible bills such as the senior prescription drug benefit.

Instead of $800 billion deficit, we now have a $9,000,000,000,000 deficit - that's cahnge you can believe in.

We have always had crooks in Washington and now with BO's spending habits, we will have even more since crooks go where the money is located.

According to BO, we only have 30 million uninsured.

Public schools have worked so well - go ask the parents of poor DC children that lost thier vouchers this so these children could get the same educational opportunity as BO's daughters. Those parents will tell a different story.

Social Security - sure, let's keep the generational ponzi scheme that has an ROR of less than 2%. Instead of giving the wealth to the individuals that earned it.

In 2001 & 2003 tax cuts were given to ALL income tax payers; especially to those that created jobs. We didn't have 10.2% unemployment in the 2001-08 period.

BO is going to make the BUsh debt ceiling look insignificant when his $9,000,000,000,000 deficit gets thru with it. We will hit $20 Trillion in no time.

I guess in your eyes its time for this "From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs." I wouldn't expect anything less fromsomeone that carry his own weight in life.

What the Hell tea rry you must have majored in spinning in college! Your are right about one thing, about crooks following the money and that is where Bushes base is on Wall Street! Remember the republicans never do anything for this country, they only do things to this country. whiteagle38

PalePigeon38,
