The Swamp

by Mark Silva

With about 25 legislative days left until Christmas, Peter Orszag, the president's budget director, was asked today if the White House still expects delivery of a health-care bill by year's end.

"That's the goal and I think we will get there,'' Orszag said at a conference of political, business and military leaders today. "There is some distance left to go, and we will get there, but don't forget how far we have come.''

The nation cannot reduce spending outside of health care sufficiently to change the course of deficit spending, the director of the White House Office of Management and Budget said this afternoon at the Bloomberg Washington Summit. The health-care bills underway include elements to help "bend that curve,'' he mainained.

Asked which bill does a better job of this, the Senate's or the House's, Orszag suggested that the House bill does more to deliver health care to those who need it, but also includes some "curve-bending'' initiatives for government health-care spending.

"The legislation has to be deficit neutral'' for the first decade, he said,, reiterating a central White House demand for bills that could cost $1 trillion or more over the coming decade, "and better than that'' during the second decade. He refused to get into debate over various provisions of the House or Senate bills, however, saying the White House will wait to see "the whole package.'' And he expects that package by Christmas.

He already is spending a lot of time putting together the president's proposed budget for fiscal 2011, which the White House will roll out in February.

Orszag, wearing a gray suit and black cowboy boots, was asked by Bloomberg's Al Hunt if it's true that the OMB has asked the agencies for two budgets, one that holds spending flat and another that cuts spending by 5 percent.

Orszag said: "I'm glad that things in Washington stay secret for so long.''

The multi-trillion dollar "health care" legislation belongs in Obamaland, that mythical land Obama and his minions seem to dwell in, a land where the "stimulus" is creating millions of jobs, unemployment is falling, and trillion dollar programs don't really cost ANYTHING..

Is this guy for real??? Deficit neutral? Who is he kidding. This administration is blowing through money like a twister in Kansas! It is laughable that a community organizer is running the show spending our money like water! Absolutely appalling. 16 million Americans are out of jobs and he is going to hold a job summit! For what????? Cut taxes!!!! And stop spending. Cut the waste. Another govt. program that is bankrupt is not going to help the situation! 2010 and 2012 can't come soon enough!

Republican Congressman who oppose universal health insurance should immediately relinquish their federal health insurance. After all, these members of Congress have long enjoyed taxpayer-funded health insurance, a privilege that they apparently believe tens of millions of working, uninsured Americans and their families don't deserve.

If Republicans don't think being uninsured is a big deal, then they should go right ahead and try it out. And if they really believe a public plan is such a bad option, maybe they can persuade their parents to give up Medicare too.

Orszag said: "I'm glad that things in Washington stay secret for so long.''

Funny guy that Orszag. He should know that Obama's administration is the most honest and transparent ever. Why we get to read every bill online 5 days before its voted on, don't we? And everybody knows what is in those "stimulus" bill that cost us billions of $$$$$ or is it trillions $$$$$ do we know? Or is it a secret? Shhhhhh! It's a secret. Don't tell anybody how bad we screwed them.

But, this time it will be different, of course. No secrets here, nope. Well except for information about officials past, what they believe in, what's in the thousands of pages of legislation that we are sneakily passing in the middle of the night anything else that YOU MIGHT NEED TO KNOW. Other than that no secrets in this administration at all. And, of course there are NO Islamic radicals in the military, don't think that there are.

Republicans don't want health reform to pass for one reason - People will like it, which means their (Republican) electoral goose will be cooked for at least a generation.

This is one Christmas present I could do without.

It is clear that this is becoming less about what is best for health care and more about the legacy Obama plans to leave...

Beware of anyone who says "I'm from the goverment and I'm here to help." No thanks...

Health care must be deficit neutral but not our wars?

I'm not a fan of debt but what hypocrisy.

Just the other day I read that more veterans died last year from lack of health care than soldiers in the Middle East.

Teresa,

The stimulus already stopped the Bush depression - it's going to take more than 10 months to totally recover.

I've yet to hear ONE Wingnut on here complain about the endless tax payer money that the Republican party has spent on the wars that they started and we're still paying for.

It's about time that we start using OUR money for OUR own problems (healthcare).

Try a new post name Teresa, you've been busted again.

Republican Party = More War for Americans, Less Health Care for Americans

This is hilarious....and typical.

Not ONCE, not one single time have we EVER heard the Repugs complain about the endless amount of tax payer money that gets thrown at their wars, but health care?....well, that's just asking to much.

Speaking of deficits, here's more news (from ABC News) that the administration wants hidden:

"The U.S. budget deficit for October surged to $176 billion, a record for the month, the Treasury Department announced today.

During the month, the government racked up $311 billion in outlays compared with $135 billion in receipts.

The October numbers mark the first month for the new fiscal year after the U.S. wrapped up the 2009 fiscal year that ended on September 30 with a record-high $1.4 trillion budget deficit due to increased government spending to stop the recession and the financial crisis. The final deficit for the 2009 fiscal year was equal to 10 percent of the nation's GDP, the highest shortfall relative to GDP since 1945, the final year of World War II."

Remember when Obama promised to CUT the deficit?

The health care bill is more about income redistribution than health care. BO and his ilk want more people dependent on the government and they want to accomplish this by increasing taxes on those that actually work. If it passes it will be a bigger ponzi scheme than social security.

This country was built on individual responsibility and not government handouts. You need only to look to Europe, where I lived for 8 years, to see the result of government handouts. Oppressive taxes have turned their economy into 2nd rate and it is rapidly sinking into 3rd rate.

If we follow Europe down that path China will dominate the world economically.

--------------------------------
How about regular families
that don't want their healthcare run by the government. That's the scary part. Why not try to make laws to fix the current system? Anything the government runs gets run into the ground and I don't want any part of it. There's the change you can count on. 3 more years until the one trick pony is gone!

I love listening to Republican morons who claim there's no healthcare crisis. They must be retired and currently on Medicare so I pay for their insurance. Healthcare costs are increasing more than twice the inflation rate yearly. Being employed, my companies yearly insurance cost increases take almost all of my raise. With inflation and higher taxes, most all American's standard of living is decreasing every year. There are many options for reducing healthcare cost. Tort reform is a starting point. But I would guess that you would scream the loudest if you were not compensated for a doctor who cut off the wrong leg in your operation.

For 6 of the last 8 years the Repubs had complete control of everything. My insurance premiums doubled in that time span. I don't give a rats arse what the Republipuke party thinks or wants. Their only motivation is to protect the insurance companies and corporate America.

101,000 Americans die UNNECESSARILY each year because of lack of access to basic medical care that they would get in most other industrialized nations.

And believe me, if there were any polls favorable to the Republican cause of denying healthcare to everyone, Republican minions would be linking to them all day long. Instead, all they have is a handfull of anecdotes that they get from Druggy Rush and that goofy clown Glenn Beck.

Clown,

Do some reasearch before you spout off, would ya? "Regular families" don't have to have gov't run health care - that's why it's called the public OPTION! The public option is not government run--it will operate on premiums paid into it, just like any insurance, after the initial set up investment.

I look forward to the day when the Repukelican party and their Wingnut minions learn how to do simple things like read and count. The rest of us here in 21'st century are getting tired of their act.

Our health care system is disintegrating. Today, 46 million people have no health insurance and even more are underinsured with high deductibles and co-payments. At a time when 60 million people, including many with insurance, do not have access to a medical home, more than 18,000 Americans die every year from preventable illnesses because they do not get to the doctor when they should. This is six times the number who died at the tragedy of 9/11 - but this occurs every year.

In the midst of this horrendous lack of coverage, the U.S. spends far more per capita on health care than any other nation - and health care costs continue to soar. At $2.4 trillion dollars, and 18 percent of our GDP, the skyrocketing cost of health care in this country is unsustainable both from a personal and macro-economic perspective.

It always makes me laugh when I hear people say they want to preserve "insurance choice" in this country. What choice do you have when you work and are nominally "insured," but your insurance coverage doesn't pay for anything you need? Are you then going to have the ability to run out and purchase extra coverage on the wages you make? Well, I guess you have the "choice" to rob a bank or maybe win the lottery to pay for it, but that's about it.

Republicans and their rich oligarchy supporters (Healthcare CEO's and Lobbyists) will do anything to kill a good healthcare bill because they know people will like it and when that happens their electoral goose will be cooked for generations - if it's not already.

Steven VK you make this to easy. 1st where did you get the 101k dead number.

Health care is not being denied to everyone. Less then 5% lack access to care. If you remove the number of people who lost insurance for a short time (the fed count even one day without), people who can get it but do not (young and dumb), and the rich who pay as they go the number falls below 5%.

And there are to many showing the people do not what is bill passed in this form.

Fifty-four percent (54%) now oppose the legislative effort, up three points since last week.

Only 23% of all voters Strongly Support the plan while nearly twice as man (44%) are Strongly Opposed.

Rasmussen does a poll every week on this issue.

And most people do not see this bill as reform any more. Reform would take letting insurance companies sale their plans across state lines. That alone will would start to lower cost with in a few months (not years like in the bill). Tort reform but, the democrat party gets way to much money from them to do that.

And here is a big one. Reform Medicare and Medicaid. Stop the fraud and waste and I mean stop the lip service saying they well and really do it. Just fixing Medicare and Medicaid could pay for the 10 million or so with out access.

First, Obamacare's stated goal is NOT to make healthcare better; it is to "bend the cost curve." So, we won't be seeing any improvement in those stats you cited.

Second, with the exception of Japan all of those countries that are ahead of the US in lower amenable mortality rates have MUCH higher doctor to population ratios:

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_phy_per_1000_peo-physicians-per-1-000-people

For example Greece has 4.4 Doctors per 1000 population and the US almost half of that at 2.3 per thousand.

NOW, we are going to further exacerbate the problem by putting more people into a crowded system and NOT adding any doctors.

Clown in DC,
Rasmussen quit being a credible pollster a long time ago. They had McCain winning the elction about 3 weeks before he got his butt kicked. They're also the prefered pollster of Faux news, which tells me all I need to know about them.

Here's all you need to know, Clown.

You Moron, you keep forgetting to post that 68% of bankruptcies in the US are due to costly healthcare. Ever think that if that 68% didnt go bankrupt our economy would be in better shape?? Think of all the money the government would save! Oh you cant see beyond that I keep forgetting that.

Oh aqnd now that the can of worms has been opened regarding the RNC giving elective aqbortion coverage to its employess I suspect 2010 ans 2012 are total milk toast for your party!! I hope th elooney left media jumps on this and spreads it all over the media outlets to show your party's true colors! Ever see a red faced elephant?? Just look in the mirror!!

Did everyone miss this one? I'm sure Silva did, or at least is ignoring it.

Dems' slick fix: $210 billion of fiscal restraint

Face it, the longer it takes to pass this horrible, bloated bill, the more Americans are going to find out the details and be against it even further. That's why they're trying to rush it though. Who in their right mind would sign in 2000 page contract . . . on anything?!?!?!?

Just keep pushing that Health Care Fiasco, dems . . .

"According to a Gallup survey released Wednesday morning, 48 percent of registered voters questioned answered that they would vote for the Republican candidate if the 2010 election for the House was held today, while 44 percent said they would back the Democrat in the race.

The Republican Party's lead is a switch from a Gallup poll released a month ago, when 46 percent said they'd back a Democrat, a two point advantage over the GOP. Republicans trailed the Democrats by 6 points when Gallup questioned Americans in July."

What my party hasn't told you.
Tax on tampons,toothbrushes,
tweezers, anything that can be called a medical device. Canada is going back to private healthcare and so is the Peopels Republic of China. Why because it doesn't work. Ask a Disabled Vet. The VA tries but it's a freakin bureaucracy run by bean counters not Dr.s. Medicines are commonly not the best choice they are all that can be prescribed. Tort Reform, Pharmecutical and Insurance competition will fix 90% of the problem. The saving would help the 12 million uninsured.

What do you mean ”health insurance reform”? This has nothing to do with healthcare, or insurance reform; it is purely all about money to the crooks in DC, and power, power over the “little people”. This President and Democratic Congress have taken our Nation hostage, with this blackmail, and extortion. Our new tyrannical leaders now have their blades to our throats. Now we know how Daniel Pearl must of felt the last moments of his life

When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson
