The Swamp

by Mark Silva

It's not quite a Bush moment.

Not quite picking up a guitar while New Orleans is bailing out from Hurricane Katrina. Certainly not "heckuva job, Brownie."

Not the same as letting the second graders in Sarasota finish their reading after being informed that two towers of the World Trade Center had been attacked.

There was no successful attack in the case of the botched bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner.

Obama at Hawaiian podium.jpg

It might, in search of comparisons, be somewhat closer to former President George W. Bush, golf club in hand, telling reporters of the seriousness of the terrorism threat and then saying, "Now watch my swing." Sans bravado.

Today, after a vacationing President Barack Obama conceded that both human and systemic failures of U.S. Intelligence had failed to bar a Nigerian man posing a reported security risk from boarding that Detroit-bound jetliner - a near-''catastrophic" breakdown in security - Obama left the reporters taking his words in Hawaii and went snorkeling.

The president was wearing a navy blue suit and white striped shirt with no tie, and spoke only to reporters - unlike a televised appearance sans-tie that he had made the day before. Today, his words seemed sterner. Today, he was acknowledging a troubling breakdown in Intelligence and security surrounding air travel.

The "pool" (another odd word in this context) report: "The motorcade drove from Kailua through Waimanalo to the bay, one of the most popular attractions on the island. The snorkeling and swimming spot was empty because it is closed on Tuesdays to both commercial and private users to give the park some time to recuperate after busy weekends. Obama met his family at the beach. They had left earlier in the day.

"During the outing, the family is expected to have a picnic and snorkel... No sightings of Obama as he exited the motorcade.''

Obama grays.jpg

Yesterday, after making his first televised comments on the matter, he headed for the golf course - an outing interrupted by the child of a close, vacationing friend from Chicago suffering a surfboard accident.

The president is on vacation in his home state. And if anyone doesn't believe that this job will take a toll on the office-holder, see the photo to the left at the end of today's press statement (by Jewel Samad / AFP / Getty Images).

There is no apparent immediate crisis such as a stunning terrorist attack or a hurricane that warrants his swift return to Washington. Indeed, he has demanded a swift report on air travel security and the terrorism watchlist program by Thursday, on New Year's Eve.

Obama is scheduled to return to Washington Sunday.

And, fortunately for the president this time -- unlike Bush --there was no news videocamera rolling on his snorkelling.

"There was no successful attack in the case of the botched bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner." - Maybe because the young terrorist learned how to make detenators from Bill Ayers.

Mark,

I must disagree with you. To me it appears that Obama does not have a clue of the dangers that face the American people.

His Secretary of Homeland Security badly messed up on Sunday and her comments equal those of Bush praising Brown after Hurricane Katrina.

Bush appeared to move quickly and forcefully whenever a threat was made against the American people. Obama just appears to take it in stride.

The vast majority of the American people disagree that terrorists should be treated like common criminals and be given Miranda rights. They want them treated as enemy combatants with limited rights.

I was never a fan of Dick Cheney but I would prefer him in charge reather than Janet Napolotano or Eric Holder.

Snorkoling, please!!!

Simple, had the president worn a Hawaiian print he would have conveyed a sense of urgency. "I got here as soon as I heard."

Instead of vacationing, perhaps he should be focused on the sham known as "Health Care Reform" . . .

The Fully Inept Tackle Health Care
By Ralph R. Reiland on 12.29.09 @ 6:06AM

As I'm writing this, they're in a panic in Congress, voting in the wee hours, bribing reluctant senators with millions in slush funds for their respective states, all to ram through a health reform bill that few if any of the lawmakers have even read, let alone intellectually reflected upon or debated.

They've already lost the public. In the most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, support for the Democrats' health reform bills has dropped to 32 percent. In the latest CNN poll, the public is opposed to the Democrats' health reforms by a margin of nearly 2 to 1.

"Democrats are on a political suicide mission," writes Megan McArdle, economics writer at the Atlantic magazine's blog. "At this point, the thing is more than a little inexplicable," McArdle asserts, speaking of the unpopularity of the legislation and the subsequent likelihood that Democrats will lose seats in both the House and Senate in next year's elections.

"No bill this large has ever passed on a straight party-line vote, or even anything close to a straight party-line vote," writes McArdle. "No bill this unpopular has ever passed on a straight party-line vote."

The Democrats' suicide mission is the result of their defining America's health care system as "broken," a system in such "crisis" that nothing short of an immediate and complete overhaul is required, a task, unfortunately, that's beyond the skill levels of Obama, Pelosi and Reid.

Rahm Emanuel, Obama's Chief of Staff, described the strategy for power grabbing early on: "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before."

To get the "crisis" rolling so nothing short of a full restructuring is required, pharmaceutical companies, health equipment suppliers, hospitals and health insurance firms were painted as greedy profiteers, while Obama charged that doctors were taking out tonsils for money instead of simply handing out inexpensive allergy medicines.

"Right now, doctors a lot of times are forced to make decisions on the fee payment schedule that's out there," declared Obama in a prime-time news conference. "The doctor may look at the reimbursement system and say to himself, 'You know what? I make a lot more money if I take this kid's tonsils out."

Added the president, talking alleged "sense" about America's supposed threat from predatory physicians, "I'd rather have that doctor making those decisions just based on whether you really need your kid's tonsils out or whether it might make more sense just to change -- maybe they have allergies."

What's missing from Obama's teleprompter is the fact that 63 percent of men and 66 percent of women in the U.S. survive in excess of five years after being diagnosed with cancer, versus 45 percent of men and 53 percent of women who make it five years after diagnosis of cancer in Great Britain's government-run system.

Also getting the silent treatment is the leading role that American companies and researchers play worldwide in health innovations. "Eighteen of the last 25 winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine are either U.S. citizens or work here," explained the Cato Institute's Michael Tanner in Senate testimony on September 30, 2009, while "U.S. companies have developed half of all new major medicines introduced worldwide over the past 20 years."

And so now the politicians, essentially inept, are all set to fix what they know next to nothing about.

Here goes Mark again making excuses for his boss, President Obama.
Let's get to reality, Mark.
1. "Heckuva job, Brownie," was rather dumb. "The system worked," is just as dumb. Excusing one dumb comment by pointing to another is rather dumb.
2. Bush read for a handful of minutes after being informed of the second tower being hit. For the life of me, I'll never understand why the Left is so nuts about that. Should Bush have just gotten up and told the little kiddies that the country was under attack and that he had to leave? Did anything change becuase he read for another 5 minutes? Did he still not cut his trip far short, as he should have?
In this most recent case, Obama's administration didn't inform him of the unsuccessful attack for three hours. Three hours!!! And then Obama didn't address the issue until Monday, three days after the occurrence. But during that time, he golfed, swam and even had a kid hurt under his watch. In fact, where is the media coverage of the guest child being injured under Obama's care? Geez, if it were Bush it would have been plastered all over the place!
3. For a full day, the Obama administration basically said it was no big deal and the system worked.
4. In today's additionalm TelePrompter moment, Obama kept referring to the guy as an "extremist." John E is an extremist. A guy who tried to blow up an airplane and kill 300 people under the auspicies of Al Qaeda is a terrorist.
5. On Monday, Obama said it was an "isolated" act. No, it was not. The guy had the help and full support of Al Qaeda and was the second terrorist act on this soil in less than two months. There were none for eight-plus years under Bush.
6. If this president and his administration cannot even bring himself and itself to say the words, terrorist and terrorism, then how in the heck can it defend us from it??

For the Wingnut idiots (John D) who want to pretend that George W. Bush never existed:

Republican leaders and their amen corner Wingnutters may have forgotten what happened when the record-setting President Bush took his month-long summer vacation in 2001, but the American people haven't. While Bush spent weeks in Crawford fretting over the politics of stem cell research and brushing off CIA briefers he said "covered your ass," Bin Laden was indeed "determined to strike in U.S."

.
http://www.perrspectives.com/blog/archives/001420.htm

As Slate detailed five years ago, "while Bush vacationed, 9/11 warnings went unheard." Those missed alarms not only took the form of that bone-chilling August 6, 2001 presidential daily brief (PDB) but in CIA briefings that never occurred. While George Tenet, Richard Clarke and others told the 9/11 Commission they were running around that summer with their "hair on fire" about potential terrorist attacks from Al Qaeda, Tenet acknowledged that in August, "I was not in briefings at this time." President Bush, as he told Commissioner Tim Roemer, "was on vacation."
.
http://www.slate.com/id/2098861/

And what a vacation it was.

As USA Today told Americans on August 3, 2001:

"Six months after taking office, President Bush will begin a month-long vacation Saturday that is significantly longer than the average American's annual getaway. If Bush returns as scheduled on Labor Day, he'll tie the modern record for presidential absence from the White House."
.
http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/august01/2001-08-03-bush-vacation.htm

Of course, at that same time, a host of other people frantic about American national security made another point to George W. Bush. On August 6th, 2001, Bush received and was briefed on the now notorious PDB which ominously warned just five weeks before the September 11 attacks that Osama Bin Laden was determined to strike in the United States. President Bush's response to the briefing, as Ron Suskind revealed in June 2006, was one for posterity:

"All right. You've covered your ass, now."
.
http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2006/06/20/911pdb/index.html?source=refresh

For all of Presideny Bush's vulgar cynicism, his administration's nonchalance about the growing threat from Bin Laden was perhaps best expressed by then National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice. Rice, who held the first principals meeting to discuss the Al Qaeda danger only on September 4, 2001, was asked about the PDB memo in April 2004 by Commissioner Richard Ben-Veniste:

BEN-VENISTE: Isn't it a fact, Dr. Rice, that the August 6 PDB warned against possible attacks in this country? And I ask you whether you recall the title of that PDB?

RICE: I believe the title was, "Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States."
.
http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0108/10/se.01.html

Of course, Rice's pathetic testimony before the 9/11 Commission only added to her embarrassment. Despite the well-publicized warnings from Richard Clarke (who helped lead the 1996 effort to protect the Atlanta Olympics from, among other things, threats from hijacked aircraft), Rice on May 16, 2002 protested:

"I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon; that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile. All of this reporting about hijacking was about traditional hijacking."

To be sure, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano's initial statement (since recanted) about Friday's airliner incident that "the system worked" was comically misguided, ranking up there with John Ashcroft's hastily called Moscow news conference in June 2002 to claim credit for breaking up the supposed "dirty bomb" plot of Jose Padilla. Still, Napolitano's gaffe pales in comparison to President Bush's post-Katrina ode to "Brownie" that "you doin' a heckuva job or dog-ate-my-homework claim, "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees."

According to ABC News, two Al Qaeda figures purportedly involved in the Northwest Airlines plot were released from Guantanamo Bay by the Bush administration in 2007. But given the GOP's full-court press to gain maximum political advantage from the near-disaster in Detroit, we're apparently supposed to forget that.

Boys and girls of the disingenuous Right, President Obama is not a miracle worker. How many more times must we repeat that mantra, until you get it !! Would you have him at the foreign airport working the scanners, there !!?
He has already whopped the wily ways of the Weasels of Wall Street, staunched the hemorrhaging of the Bush&Cheney fringe's jobs flow, out of this country, at the end of Draft-dodging Duos disastrous terms !! Corralled the Bandits in the Boardrooms and beyond, so, please don't expect him to find a cure for cancer, for at least until next week !!
In the meantime the vitriol continues to be spewed all over America, masquerading as patriotic fervor, when in fact the Republican-Libertarians have the fever !! A fever, the likes of which, this country hasn't seen in many decades. How did they catch it, you might ask !!? They caught it with their mouths open and by doing nothing. Their mouths were open in disbelief at what the Democrats were achieving, in spite of their " help " !! They passed healthcare reform and the Republican-Libertarians didn't do anything, except maybe pray that it will fail and make many more Americans sicker and die. Just to prove a malignant agenda, of theirs, is right. How is that for patriotic hypocrisy !!? It is the worse case of do-nothing-ism, I have ever seen and what did it get them, completely shut-out. So, what was these losers response, go from corporate news station to corporate news station, hat in hand, begging for air time, to moan to America that the Democrats were trying to destroy, their, the Republican-Libertarians, most sacred agencies and programs, Social Security and Medicare. The very same programs that these same Republican-Libertarians tried to scuttle, destroy and whither on the vine. They are hoping and praying that America will not remember that it was the Democrats who enacted Social Security and Medicare legislature, that gave rise to these two important safety nets for our sick, our poor, our seniors and for our children. America remembers, just ask the Bush&Cheney fringe and take notice who is in our White House, presently.
So, if you must, try to limit your complaining about President Obama's miracle working, he's good for about one, every millennium !! In the meantime, a little more verbal and active support of our President, President Obama, in these difficult times, will not turn you into pumpkins, boys and girls of the Republican-Libertarian gang !!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.
HAPPY NEW YEAR, TO OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN OUR ARMED FORCES.

This guy has serious brain lapses. He thinks he is the defense attorney for terrorists: "let's not jump to conclusions" he lectured us after the terrorist attack on Fort Hood. AND BY THE WAY BOTH OF THESE ATTACKS INVOLVE THE SAME IMAM IN YEMEN. But, let's not jump to conclusions; by all means let's wait until they kill more Americans. We wouldn't want to look like we are mad about it. The rest of the world might take Obama down off that Nobel pedestal.

So the Marxist lawyer continues to lecture us in his best attorney style about how he has everything under control. BS. He doesn't know sh#t! His homeland security head is a joke, as is most of his administration, with Obama himself as the headline comedic act.

Yeah, let's have a trial of terrorists in NYC. Brilliant idea.

Obama take action and come back to Washington? Aww come on, he's a man of words....and all of a sudden everyone expects him to be a man of action? Give the guy a break *wink*.

Nathan R. Jessup

Looks like SOME people don't know what they are talking about like Peter King-R. or some SWAMP readers. Direct quotes from President Obama's West Point speech.

"America, our allies and the world were acting as one to destroy al Qaeda's terrorist network and to protect our common security."

"Gradually, the Taliban has begun to control additional swaths of territory in Afghanistan, while engaging in increasingly brazen and devastating attacks of terrorism against the Pakistani people."

"Years of debate over Iraq and terrorism have left our unity on national security issues in tatters, and created a highly polarized and partisan backdrop for this effort."

Closing Gitmo is the only way to prevent future terrorist attacks, just ask the really smart people.

There were none for eight-plus years under Bush.

Posted by: John D, still right, as usual | December 29, 2009 9:23 PM

I'm sorry John Dumb but where were you on 911?? That happened during Bush's 8 years plus as I recall.

And Terry, your post is irrelevant as usual.

How you can possibly make a moral equivalence between listening to the children read for 5 more minutes and going snorkeling is stunning! I have seen the "My Pet Goat" moment several times and I am always struck by the determined look on Bush's face. Even after 72 hours, the world's most gifted orator's bumbling, tepid response looked weak at best. He doesn't do so well with his note cards now does he? Continuing to carry his water like this is unprofessional in the extreme and does this inexperienced President, your credibility and the American people no favors.

Mark ignores the Hasan attack.

Can we stop with Katrina already? Those people had 3 days notice to get out, and sat at home!

Obama doesn't care about anything but himself...his ego is so large he thinks anything he says or does is ok.

I firmly believe he is already tired of this job and lost all interest in being President, if he ever was!

Too many in the background pulling his strings!

Why do commenters here continue to compare Obama and Bush actions?
Obama was the one preaching "Hope and Change", being different than the same old politicians.
But is there "Hope and Change"? Is Obama better than the "same old politcians"?
Judge Obama on his actions, do not let Obama (or other Democrats) shirk responsibility or blame something because of what he "inherited".
We do not have Bush as President. We have Obama.
He was supposed to be better (or so he kept telling us), but is he?
My vote is "no".

Scottie,

Abdul Mudallad failed bomb attempt was due to a detenator failure. Bill Ayers and his fellow Weather Underground loons failure to bomb Fort Dix was due to a detenator failure (this time going off prematurely).

Scot, dear, there was NO terrorist attack in the U.S. by a foreign entity such as Al Qaeda after 9/11. There have been two in less than two months now. One successful, one not. For both of those incidents, red flags were waving like New York Yankee pennants during another World Series. Both were ignored, in large part becauae of PC policies adopted by this administration.

Now, onto a more serious reply to HHH. I love all the different links, especially the Ron Suskind one. Who was this CIA agent that said Bush said butts were covered? I mean during a presidential briefing there are only a handful of people present -- at best. So, it shouldn't be hard to figure out who that CIA agent was. In addition, I really doubt a "CIA agent" will brief the president. Normally, those tasks are done by the CIA chief and various Cabinet officials or White House officialos such as the Chief of Staff. But for argument's sake, let's say it was a low-level "CIA agent," then he/she must have a name. With only a few people briefing the president, like I said, it shouldn't be difficult to know whom it was. Unless the tale is pure, 100 percent, unadulterated BS.
Yes, there was a PDB that said Bin Laden determined to attack U.S. One. Presidential Daily Briefings are EVERY DAY, hence the "Daily" part of the briefing. If the CIA and other intelligence officials thought an attack was imminent or highly likely, then it would have been noted over and over again with updates, etc. One briefing a month prior to the event doesn't mean much.
We know dots weren;t connected then. But for seven-plus years after that, dots were connected. Dots have not been connected these past few months. We've heard that twice now in the past two months that all the warning signs were there, but dots were not connected, or warning signs ignored.
And by the way, where is the investigation into why the warning signs were ignored regarding the Fort Hood shootings? Democratic coverup, eh??
Those are the facts, jacks!

Scot, dear, there was NO terrorist attack in the U.S. by a foreign entity such as Al Qaeda after 9/11

John darling, you said that during Bush's 8+ years in office there were no terrorist attacks on US soil.... Im sorry but a two term president is in office for 8 years right? Bush became president Jan 2001. 911 happened 8 months later.....um thats within his 8 years + moron.
Terry, again your posts mean nothing.

The mere fact that Bush has to be listed as examples so many times shows the worry that Obama has fast become what the Left said about Bush.
In fact, Obama has had three or four attacks on US soil on his watch now. His response has seemed disinterested, confused, unfocused. Napolitano on TV with her anine statements that the system worked show she has to resign. Moving terrorists from Gitmo to the US, holding trials in NYC, calling them man-caused disasters, playing hoops while Iran burns and someone tries to blow up a plane. Not good. Not good at all. The people see it, the polls reflect it.

Here we go, Silva comparing Bush to Obama. Bush isn't president anymore and the left blaming every faliure Ozero has had in the last year on him is getting really, really old.
It took Obama 3 days to utter one word about this while Janet Napolitano was giving interviews saying the "system worked".
.
Then on day 3 after the attack Obama Finally gives a speech on what happened then races to the golf course and races bact to the house because his chicago pals kid scraped his finger only to race back to the golf course again. Now he gives another speech and then goes snorkeling.
.
How in the world did this incopetent fool get elected?

How did obama get that scar on his head??

o - also notable is how obama avoids the worlds "muslim" & "islam" as tho merely by not saying them all thoughts about it will go away. Like dysfunctional parents who refuse to discuss family problems...

Scot, since we all know that 9/11 occurred, a dummy would know that I would be referring to the period of Bush's term AFTER 9/11. Hmmm, let's see, Sept. 11, 2001 to Sept. 2009 would be eight years. No attacks on U.S. soil (nine of those months under Obimbo). But, Scot, we have had two attacks in less than two months now and we know what warning signs, bells and whistles, sirens, doorbells, alarm clocks, air raid sirens, emergency vehicle sirens, and the Lost in Space robot bellowing, "danger, Obama administration, danger," all were blaring about both events and NOTHING was done in either instance!! Heck, we even had the terrorist's dad go to the U.S. embassy and TELL US!!! Yet, NOTHING!!!!!
Got it, kook?

Fitz,

The rightwing nutjobs are out in full force celebrating their latest hollow victory with fundraising and blame assigning. They are in a group feeding frenzy over this, taking delight in a near tragedy in order to profit politically and economically.

Then they scratch their heads and wonder why so few voters identify with their party and principles..or lack thereof, except the bigots and nazi's.

Any sensible person would demand that aggressive measures be taken to prevent terrorist attacks and insist on knowing what went wrong.and who dropped the ball, along with implementing measures ASAP inc. scanning devices.

Instead, there is a celebration.
How truly dysfunctional.

Fitz,

The usuals here are celebrating this near tragedy, rather than doing what any sensible person would do and that is to demand that the security agencies do their job to protect Anerican citizens. I am outraged because the technology is certainly in place and the funding, so who is not doing their job should be the prevailing issue, and measures implemented STAT to hopefully prevent such outrageous breaching of security.

Instead, there are fundraisers being held. How sick and dysfunctional but to the minority party not in power, those passengers are roadkill
and photo ops and press releases.
The GOP wonders why so few identify with their party and principals..or should I say lack thereof. No surprise there.

Have a HNY.

Obama is the danger that faces the American people.

Ok neocons, is it 2, 3, or 4 now?

1) Fort Hood: A deranged mentally ill US Army Major who killed 13 people. This was a local incident by a deranged man. Im not makingup excuses but to use this as a comparison to Bush's 911 is ignorant and just plain stupid!

2) Nigerian on fire: definitly falls into the terrorist category and thank god he failed.

hey Slayer, can you tell us what the other terrorist attacks on our own soil were?

I think that the American people had better wake up to the fact that we have a present "administration" that is destroying
our Nation and it's freedoms...The president is blatant in his loathing of this Nation! It is in all of his words and his actions!
It took him 4 days to respond to the American people on the attempted terrorist attack on flight 253 and then he did so
without a tie, as he refered to the terroists as "a passenger" instead of terroist! He looked like one of the Middle Eastern leaders standing there!!! Scary!!!
He is dragging his feet on the Fort Hood incident and he has not filled the position of Head of Security for this Nation because he has been to busy trying to pass the Deathcare bill!
Now the Interpol thing...we are in grave danger, as a Nation and a people, with this man and his administration!

I am thoroughly shocked that more and more Americans are not screaming from the roof tops about what we are witnessing!
It is diabolicaly and unprecidently, historical!

The libs on here can't seem to see past Obama's desire to be loved by everyone, admired by all, and controlling of everything. This will be his downfall in the end, just as it was for many other leaders of the past. In this effort to protect him from himself they are constantly comparing him to former President Bush. There are big differences here. Bush put security first. Obama puts appearances first. He wants the U.S. and most importantly, himself to look good. In the end, Obama is more likely to get my family and I killed than was Bush.

Liberals are all too willing to follow this dangerous man to the grave. They worship him, fawn over him, and even faint with his words. Conservatives know the dangers of this as we are more familiar with history. We can see how misguided these people are and how this blind faith can get people killed.

There are things worth dying for, but Obama is not one of them. Freedom is! This man scares me and I will not feel safe with him in charge.

Billions for the M.I.C., while the few who want to hurt us bring down the system with chump change. Meanwhile, you idiots argue politics:
http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/the_global_war_on_stealth_underwear_20091230/

Scot, the Fort Hood killer was acting in Jihad. He was consulting with Al Qaeda imams. For months, red flags were blaring about Hasan and ALL were ignored. He should never have been there. He should have been investigated. Those killings never should have happened.
And to top it off, before mentioning the massacre in a speech, Obimbo is giving shoutouts to those in the audience! Weak, no character, lax, insipid, clueless: all words to describe our current commander in chief.

The mere fact that Bush has to be listed as examples so many times shows the worry that Obama has fast become what the Left said about Bush. Napolitano on TV with her anine statements that the system worked show she has to resign.

Therefore, the sever lack of unflinching support by the members of the right in spite of this exposes them for what they are, partisan to the grave.
.
Moving terrorists from Gitmo to the US, holding trials in NYC, calling them man-caused disasters, playing hoops while Iran burns and someone tries to blow up a plane. Not good. Not good at all. The people see it, the polls reflect it.

The mere fact is you just discredited your theory that there is worry over Obama quickly becoming Bush, exposing you as a partisan.

So should Obama live down to Bush's performance as president! Bush was bad but I thought Obama was going to change all that. We were supposed to learn from the mistakes and stupidity of the Bush years. We haven't. And as far as celebrating any deaths I haven't seen that at all. No one is celebrating they are demanding that Obama steps up to the "2 am call" that Hillary mentioned during the campaign. He said he could handle it but by all apperances he hopes it will be a wrong number and just go away.

Fitz,
The usuals here are celebrating this near tragedy, rather than doing what any sensible person would do and that is to demand that the security agencies do their job to protect Anerican citizens.

What are you talking about, celebrating? We are embarrassed and dismayed that the President is out snorkeling in such a public display of irresponsibility after a weak and rambling oration from the so called inspiring Obama. I understand the need for down time but even in the best of circumstances to have the President behaving like a teenager on Christmas break is unseemly and so not presidential as to be stunningly out of touch. This from the man who is hailed as a world leader? Unbelievable!

Can we stop with Katrina already? Those people had 3 days notice to get out, and sat at home!

~~~~~~~~~
The people of New Orleans were ignored by Bush because they were mainly poor black democrats.
Bush, however, made more than certain that Florida was well prepared prior to a storm strike because of his brother the gov. and all those republicon voters.
The poor don't matter to the r-cons and because of r-con policies, there are millions more poor folks....who vote.
People with half a brain (meaning non-liberals) no that this administration is soft on terrorism. Right after Obama was sworn in a came out to no longer use the word terrorist. And not to call a terrorist attack but it was a terrorist attack but some other claptrap turned made up by team Obama. To even give a person that tries to blow up a plane the same rights as a person would get for stealing a loaf of bread is a joke and a insult to every American citizen who has served and is now in service to this great country. It does not matter what political party you are in or what your ideology is or what sex you are or what race you are or what religion you are when that bomb goes off. Obama just like Jimmy Carter are soft on terrorism where Bush and Reagan were not. What happened this past week with this attempted attack just goes to show you how screwed up the system is right now. The system did not do anything to stop this from happening the system is what almost allowed this to happen under this administration. What stopped this attack were a few brave airline passengers!
The usuals here are celebrating this near tragedy, rather than doing what any sensible person would do and that is to demand that the security agencies do their job to protect Anerican citizens. I am outraged because the technology is certainly in place and the funding, so who is not doing their job should be the prevailing issue, and measures implemented STAT to hopefully prevent such outrageous breaching of security.
You complain about fundraising then ask who is not doing their job? The fundraising is effective because the clueless one decided it made sense to prosecute the intelligence agencies while issuing ambiguous directives. The clueless one spent 3 days before recognizing that his "system worked" lies weren't resonating. The fundraising is to get rid of the fool that would nominate a Janet the incompetent to a position affecting national security.
You are right to be outraged that people aren't doing their job, why don't you contribute to removing the person that by his own admission is too inexperienced for the job. 2012 can't come soon enough
The poor of Louisiana were left behind because their ill prepared and corrupt state government left them that way for generations. Even trying to reason with victims of the handout mentality that permeates the Democratic mindset is pointless. Keep Black people poor, ignorant and depending on the rest of the adult population has been so successful for them. Meanwhile, Detroit has 50% unemployment and inner cities are worst than third world countries. Increasingly add in the Hispanic population who immigrated ( many illegally) for a better life and find that the freebies and handouts make for destroyed family structure and fatherless homes. Love the advantages of supporting progressive policies, stay in self imposed squalor forever and always, always, always blame someone else for your poor choices.
Writer, it is a little off topic but the repubs in Florida made an effort to protect themselves and the other half of the population that are dems. The people of NO had all they needed to avoid ending up as they did. The fact that Bush had to send help to the city and state dems that initially refused help shows who really cares about poor people. Thanks however for pointing out how clueless and incapable dems are, and how your policies have created a whole class of people incapable of even the most minimal self reliance.
Well at least now we have someone that will get right on the systemic failures of his administration.... right after he gets back from snorkeling.
It seems to me ALL you people need to, as the New York "Daily News" said today, "Get a Grip" !
Obama, Bush, Clinton..... does it really matter? The issue is that, not only did THEY fail ALL of US, the bureaucracies that have been created have failed us.
We are now dealing with nothing less than ALL our lives. Either the Chief Executive Officer of our country understands that there is gross incompetence in our bureaus and cleans house and makes mistakes such as these subject to dismissal and loss of all benefits accrued, or the beat will go on.
In the end, stupid people, the fault lies not in our "Stars" but in ourselves; we elected these people and they have failed us and if nothing changes, they will kill US again.
I am neither a Republican nor a Democrat; I am an American citizen who wishes those with whom I have fostered a social contract to protect me. ALL of them have failed miserably.
We have met the enemy and he IS us.
Obama handled this just right.
You don't dignify a failed shoe-bomber type wannabe with a major address.
You do order an investigation as to how pants-bomber got on the plane in the first place.
But you don't create a panic in the public and you don't signal to the bad guys to keep on trying.
No Drama Obama handled it perfectly.
And I imagine he shifted the drones into overdrive.
John D,
Are you also not including Richard Reid? That was after 9/11, and very similar circumstances to the Northwest flight.
Talk about your failures... Obama forgot his promise to the American people about cutting pork when he failed to excercise his veto pen in the Defence Appropriations Bill. Did he even read the the BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in pork barrel spending in the bill? The emperor has no clothes.
Martin,
Boy George Bush didn't even mention the shoe-bomber, Richard Reid, until days after the event occurred. It was several days later that Bush brought up the event in a rather casual way.
Of course John D.'s memory bank is so selective and small, he couldn't recall that one.
Doug R.
I agree with you on this. I think both presidents were at fault by waiting but, that is minor. It the people under him that I find at fault with. Plus I find no problem in the Obama administration trying for underwear bomber in the same fashion that the shoe bomber was tried in criminal court. He still got a life sentence in a super max and I am sure the underwear bomber will get the same. I am sorry but, every time I say or type underwear bomber I smile thinking of the line that kids used to make about pants on fire.
Of course he doesnt include this guy. Isnt it obvious, this happened during Bush's reign, why would John Dumb Dumb want to admit such a thing!! God forbid! You know those losers have selective memories when it comes to the worst republican president in US history!
Obama said he was not going to scare us about terrorist attacks like Bush did. Well, with someone like Obama at the helm, who needs terrorists to be frightened about the destruction of our nation? Our country can survive planes falling from the skies. We may not survive the enemy now stabbing at the heart of our democracy.
