President Barack Obama, arriving in wintry Copenhagen today at the close of a two-week international conference on climate change, said the will of nations to confront the challenge of global warming "hangs in the balance.''
This is the president's second journey to Copenhagen.
The first ended in deep disappointment: With the bid of the president's hometown Chicago to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games flatly rejected by the International Olympic Committee.
At this one, the stakes are far bigger.
The president met this morning with other world leaders, including Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei.
The U.S. and China, the two biggest emitters of greenhouse gases blamed by scientists for contributing to global warming, have been at an impasse over finance, pollution-reduction goals and a verification of any cuts in emissions that the nations accept. Obama is calling for China and other nations to verify their pledges to cut heat-trapping emissions. China has called the demand unfair.
"Coming back with an empty agreement, I think, would be far worse than coming back empty-handed," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said yesterday in Washington. "We want something that works for both the international community but also what works for the United States."
U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown is mediating between China and the U.S., according to Paul Bengo, chief of staff to Papua New Guinea Prime Minister Michael Somare.
Obama was addressing the plenary session of the conference, where talks that started on Dec. 7 were scheduled to end at 6 pm Copenhagen, noontime in Washington.

Yes, we MUST sign global warming agreements, OR ELSE we'll all be dead within 50 years!
Yes, we must take over the health care industry or the nation will go bankrupt!
Yes, we must have a stimulus package or we'll go into a depression!
Yes, we must spend more money or the country will go bankrupt!
It is rather ironic that the generally temperate Copenhagen got hit by a snowstorm yesterday. It sort of mirrors the snow job coming from this conference and the snow job that is the Obimbo Shaministration.

It is indeed refreshing to see and hear our President of the United States, stand tall and proclaim to the world, that yes, we will be a serious player in our earth's recovery !! That is pure unadulterated American leadership, at its finest and we appreciate President Obama's bold ambitions.. Now, if we can find enough progressive-minded elected officials in our Legislatures to advice and guide him, to our stated goals, outlined in Copenhagen, we will, once again, be a world partner in solving our world's needs !! The key is to find Democrats and Republicans that are willing to work together to help our planet recover, from the centuries of abuse and neglect. If that means reducing all kinds of pollutants and emissions, than that is what must be. If it means our automakers must increase MPG, than we will do that. Above all, if it means replacing fossil fuels, we must re-engage our scientific community, as we did on our way into outer space. There is nothing America can not do, when she sets her mind to doing it and that does mean a Healthcare system that is fair towards everyone, healthcare corporations' clients/patients and the healthcare corporations, themselves. We will not achieve our common goals as long as we are fighting and bickering with each other. Let's give this " new " approach a chance !! What the heck, it might work and guess what, America may get back to work, as well !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

If his past performance is any indicator, this junket will result in Obama apologizing for America, Obama showing how spineless he is and the final result will cost the taxpayers billions if not trillions of dollars with nothing in return.

Yesterday, Secretary of State Clinton announced a 100 billion dollar a year program to held developing nations engaged in fighting global warming.
My question is where is this money going to come from? The analysis of this announcement by experts indicate a third of this one hundred billion dollars a year will come from the United States.
Will the enactment of this program require higher taxes, how many jobs will be exported from the United States and what other negatives will we face?
Answers please!
Posted by: Pat H | December 18, 2009 9:42 AM
Remember the Kyoto Protocol back during President Clinton's term? Al Gore brought that back from Japan and it took the Senate about 15 minutes to pass a resolution (95-0) advising the president not to waste his time submitting it to them.
Whatever they come up with in Copenhagen will probably suffer the same fate. A waste of time, money, presidential prestige, and then there is the 'carbon footprint' whatever that is, to consider.

The reactions to Obama's speech are in. Even the reliably left-wing UK Guardian says "Barack Obama's speech disappoints and fuels frustration at Copenhagen".
And while the politicians in Copenhagen yammer about "global warming" indoors, Copenhagen outdoors is unseasonably cold and snowy. Even mother nature is mocking this gabfest.

Are we not already BORROWING from China for all the spending programs in the USA? So NOW we are suppose to borrow money FROM China (and pay interest) to GIVE to China so they cut down their emissions? WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE??

All you need to know about Copenhagen
Randall Hoven
The Copenhagen treaty would do nothing to stop global warming, even if you believe in it. Here it is, right from Time magazine.
"A paper leaked from, and confirmed to be authentic by, the U.N. on Thursday night contains an assessment of the emissions-reduction pledges put forward so far in Copenhagen. It calculates that even if all developed and developing nations keep their promises, atmospheric carbon concentrations would rise as high as 770 parts per million, and temperatures could rise 3°C by the end of the century. The upper safe zone in temperature rise, according to many scientists, is 2°C, and the limit called for by vulnerable island nations is 1.5°C."
Time put this little jewel in the 10th paragraph of its 12-paragraph piece.
Dear climate alarmists, go ahead and believe the globe is warming, it is catastrophic and it is man-caused. All that makes no difference on whether you should support treaties like Kyoto and Copenhagen, because even if all treaty promises are kept, CO2 would be more than double your magic "350" level and temperatures would rise about as much as anyone feared in the first place.
At what point do even believers see that this is all about wealth transfer and sabotaging capitalism?

Pat H-
The answer to your question it’s a resounding YES, higher taxes.
Clinton mentioned yesterday that the $10B the US would commit to other nations would come from public (taxes) and private sector of the US.
It’s unclear how many jobs will leave, but most business will have to shed jobs to help cover the cost of the increased tax and energy burden on them, also.
Other negatives will be higher gasoline at the pump. Higher natural gas prices (heating) and higher electrical bills. Some experts state you could end up paying an additional 50% more in higher energy cost for each.

It's hilarious the way Republicans want us all to believe that global warming is a myth because of a couple of taken out of context hacked e-mails...which just conveniently happened a few weeks before Copenhagen. Remember people, these are the same right wing morons who still think the Earth is flat and Jesus rode a dinosaur.
This is becoming more and more representative of the level of discourse from this pathetic throng of losers. They have already tried to make federal cases out of phony death panels, presidential bowing scandals, child indoctrination via stay-in-school speeches, White House guest lists, and how many pages a bill contains. The ever more lame content of their complaints reveals just how desperate they are to come up with something about which to bitch.
There is an obvious evolution of lameness on the right. In the old days they employed the primitive flag lapel pin gambit. Then they tacked to the War on Christmas. And there is the always popular idiocy of "Who would you rather have a beer with?" But now they have shattered all previous records if idiotic asininity with the ticklish temple tactic.
Next on the Republican scandal agenda: How often does Obama floss? I probably shouldn't give them any ideas.
Every time I think the right wing lunatic fringe can't get any more moronic they come up with something like this. Mustard, arugala, a manufactured lobster scandal?

In the annals of right-wing hubris, the "climategate" sham should be given recognition. For years, the deniers have intentionally engaged in a disinformation campaign to mislead and confuse the public about the existence and gravity of climate change. Two lawsuits were filed that included a cause of action for climate change civil conspiracy. The right-wing likes to flip things upside down, so now they cry that scientists have been part of a conspiracy to defraud the public into believing that global warming is real.

Republicans wouldn't know junk right wing science funded by Big Oil companies for real science if it hit them over the head with a beer bottle. Most of these mental midgets still believe in Intelligent Design, which is the epitome of junk science, and yet global warming, backed by a consensus of greater than 90% of climate scientists, is junk science to them.
Republican political leaders, all of whom are bought and paid for by Big Oil, are reflecting the dumbing down of our society. They've compiled their anti global warming "intelligence" much like they did their Iraq/Al-Qaeda WMD intelligence.
If the cretins who make up what's left of the Republican base had any sort of intelligence whatsoever they would be insulted by their leaderships know-nothing popularism and condescension.
What would the Big Oil companies do (the ones who get rich off of being able to pollute and kill people) if they didn't have a bunch of dumbarse Republican rubes doing their dirty work for them?

The Battleground Poll and the Battle for America
http://www.americanthinker.com/2009/12/the_battleground_poll_and_the.html
What it means in politics is that any true conservative against a true leftist should carry every state and win by a landslide. But it means more than that. Conservatives in the areas of culture, media, entertainment, and education are treated like unwanted stepchildren, or worse. (This, despite the fact that conservatives on average are better educated than liberals.)
The worst victims of invidious bigotry in America today are conservatives. Only a tiny percentage of professors are conservative. The same is true for government supported media like NPR, Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and National Endowment for the Arts. Libraries are dominated by the minority left. How different would America be if fifty or sixty percent of teachers, librarians, professors, public media producers, and staff in government supported organizations were conservative!

I’m tracking with you here, John D. Not reaching out to any damn Liberals, but here’s a link to appease the Liberals.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/oct/19/gordon-brown-copenhagen-climate-talks
And here’s what Gordon Brown, said in that link:
"In every era there are only one or two moments when nations come together and reach agreements that make history, because they change the course of history. Copenhagen must be such a time. There are now fewer than 50 days to set the course of the next 50 years and more.
Gordon Brown said this on October 19th. We apparently have already met our Maker. We either got the 500W Marshall amps, the 72 virgins, the assignment to Hell, or whatever, 10 DAYS AGO. Algore is jetting around on his Lear Jet talking about the “Bones of Neptune” dissolving, disappearing, or maybe floating away with that forlorn looking polar bear on a damn ice floe. Chavez is talking about sulfur and ghosts roaming around in the room. Hell, I don’t know, who can follow all of these demented fools.
This I am sure. Liberals are NOT smart enough to NOT be making GW Load of Crap projections that will never come true. Mustapha is talking about something “hangs in the balance”. Have to give Mustapha some credit though for at least being smart enough to use that allegorical kind of liberal-speak that could mean damn near anything.
"In the middle of the journey of our life I came to myself within a dark wood where the straight way was lost." ~ Dante, looking at the gates of Hell, maybe.
Liberals spend an entire lifetime in the dark woods where being lost is a commitment of their time but unfortunately our money.

Not surprisingly, the Teabaggers/Right-Wing Ideologues who are to stupid to know that they are nothing more than useful idiots for the Corporate Health Insurance Industry, Big Oil and Wall Street etc are convinced global warming is some kind of hoax dreamed up by Al Gore and the liberal element in the world in general. Conservative clowns are certain that thousands of scientists have conspired to concoct a story that is untrue. Many global warming deniers also believe there is a hidden cabal of companies who are going to make fortunes off of the hoax like it's some sort of plot from the X-Files and Star Treck
Global warming is real. It is getting worse. The ice around the planet is melting faster and faster every day. The ocean level is rising. Glaciers are disappearing. Arctic ice is melting. Permafrost in Alaska, Siberia and everywhere else is thawing and releasing methane into the atmosphere. The ice sheet that covers Greenland is melting faster than people believed possible. The ice sheet that covers the solid ground in Antarctica is showing signs of increased melting.
None of this is a hoax. The real conspiracy is being conducted and led by huge corporations that are in the back pocket of the Republican party, and they don't want to stop what they have been doing for decades.

Pat H., you ask where the money is going to come from that the US is planning to commit. I suppose by borrowing money, as we are already facing projected deficits for the next decade. Even better question: Where is it going? To "poor" and "developing" nations (like China). Maybe I'm getting too cynical, but the way I see this playing out is the US spending money it does not have (by borrowing money from countries like China), so the US can honor its commitment to developing countries (by giving that same money back to China), so that poor countries (like China) can better compete with the US.

It’s only fitting that the last word goes to Andrew Breitbart:
Why it’s important: The absolute admission by the reigning media class that they are not objective journalists and earnest gumshoe reporters is cause for celebration. The cabal that made sure George W. Bush became a toxic name to the body politic had even greater plans in 2008 when it offered up one-term senator and former Punahou School benchwarmer, Barack Obama, as the candidate of the millennium. Now that the deed is done, multiple scandals that would have felled mere-mortal presidents have gone completely unreported. Who needs Teflon when it’s not you who’s frying in the pan? Problem for the ostriches, however: the undermedia — the Internet, social networking, talk radio — has grown to become a formidable checks and balances for the traditional media. The current paradigm bodes ill for those rooting for ABC, NBC, CBS, The New York Times, Time Magazine, et al. As their readership and viewership plunges with every missed megastory, so do those eyeballs transfer to the more reliable and democratic new media now being fueled by citizen journalists testing their abilities in groundbreaking investigative journalism.

He’s none of the above.
Hot on the heels of repeated failures at home, in Asia, and in Europe, Mr. Obama went to Copenhagen where, despite all the bluster, he failed yet again at the United Nation’s Climate Change Summit.
His dramatic collapse in approval ratings was very predictable but his penchant for repetitive screw-ups, disappointments, and outright failures on various world stages were anything but predictable, at least to his idolators throughout the planet.
Just months ago, they still regarded him as the best thing to happen since Bill Clinton beat his impeachment rap.

The Brothers Grim – Al Gore and Rajendra Pachauri – are possessed of imaginations so rich as to dwarf the inventive powers of conventional storytellers. "Once upon a time," Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change chairman Pachauri opened the proceedings by recycling all the much-loved, if long discredited, bedtime favourites.

In my view An enterprising person is one who comes across a pile of scrap metal and sees the making of a wonderful sculpture. An enterprising person is one who drives through an old decrepit part of town and sees a new housing development. An enterprising person is one who sees opportunity in all areas of life. To be enterprising is to keep your eyes open and your mind active. It's to be skilled enough, confident enough, creative enough and disciplined enough to seize opportunities that present themselves... regardless of the economy.
