The Swamp

by Mark Silva

John Edwards, the Democratic candidate for vice president in 2004 whose bid for the 2008 presidential nomination was cut short by an admitted sexual affair with a campaign videographer, finally allowed today that he is the father of the woman's 2-year-old girl.

"I am Quinn's father," Edwards said in a statement delivered first to NBC News and then released more widely this morning. "I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves.''

Harrison Hickman, an Edwards associate, spoke about the relationship during an interview aired this morning on NBC's Today show.

"The senator wants to say first of all that he is the father of Quinn,'' Hickman said on Today. "Secondly, he wants people to know that he has provided for her and will continue to provide for her, as he should, both financially and emotionally."

The admission comes on the eve of an ABC 20/20 program on Friday in which the man who had claimed fatherhood, former Edwards aide Andrew Young, is to speak about his book, The Politician, expected to reveal more details.

Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, admitted to an affair with videographer Rielle Hunter, 42, in between the 2004 and 2008 elections after tabloids uncovered their relationship, and she later give birth to Frances Quinn.

"I have been able to spend time with her during the past year and trust that future efforts to show her the love and affection she deserves can be done privately and in peace," Edwards said of the child in his statement today.

"It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me," his statement said. "To all those I have disappointed and hurt, these words will never be enough, but I am truly sorry.''

See the Today interview above and read it below:

from NBC's Today:

Lisa Myers:

This statement has been months in the making, and confirms what many Americans have already concluded that at the same time he was running for president, John Edwards fathered a child. He's now publicly embracing that child for the first time.
After 2 years of scandal, deception, and betrayal that destroyed his political career and wrecked his personal life, John Edwards this morning is trying to right a wrong.
"Are you speaking for the Senator today?"

Harrison Hickman:
"I am speaking for the senator to the extent that anyone can, yes."

Lisa Myers:
Harrison Hickman is Edward's longtime close friend and trusted political adviser, coming forward to help deliver a message about Frances Quinn Hunter, the child born to Rielle Hunter, with whom Edwards had an affair.

Harrison Hickman:
"The Senator wants to say first of all that he is the father of Quinn. Secondly, he wants people to know that he has provided for her and will continue to provide for her, as he should, both financially and emotionally."

Lisa Myers

In a written statement provided exclusively to NBC NEWS, Edwards SAYS: "I am Quinn's father. I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves... It was wrong for me ever to deny she was my daughter and hopefully one day, when she understands, she will forgive me."

"When he talks about the child, what does he tell you? How does he feel about this child."
Harrison Hickman:

"He talks about her being a beautiful child, a happy child. Like any father, he talks about how it makes him feel when he's around Quinn, which is very happy. I think he's very proud of this child."

Lisa Myers:
"This child is almost 2 years old. Why did it take so long for the Senator to acknowledge that he is her father?

Harrison Hickman:
"It was a lot more complicated, I think than most people think. There are a lot of adults involved. And I think they wanted to handle this the right way for Jack and Emma Claire and Cate, as well as Quinn."

Lisa Myers:
Edwards' attorneys say he's been seeing Quinn and providing financial support for about a year, and just signed a child support agreement with Hunter. A spokesman for Elizabeth Today's announcement marks another chapter in the fall of a man once considered a leading candidate for president. A man whose hubris and recklessness brought personal destruction.
But when tabloid headlines forced a public admission of the affair with Hunter, his campaign videographer, in August 2008, he denied Hunter's child was his.
"Did he know at the time that this was his daughter?"

Harrison Hickman:
"I do not know if he knew it was his daughter at the time, but I know he lied when he said it was not possible, ah, and he knows he lied. And, you know, I think he is certainly regretful for that."

Lisa Myers:
"The Senator also has said that the affair with Rielle Hunter occurred when Elizabeth's cancer was in remission, however, this child was conceived three months after Elizabeth announced that her cancer was back and it was incurable."
Harrison Hickman:
"You're right. I mean, as he has said, he's been deceitful about it, he's lied about it."

Lisa Myers:
Elizabeth Edwards is still undergoing cancer treatment and makes occasional public appearances about health care. She opened a furniture shop last summer in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, not far from the family's mansion.

Lisa Myers:
"How is Elizabeth dealing with this new member of the family?"

Harrison Hickman:
"Elizabeth thinks he should acknowledge this. It's been a very difficult time for everyone, but for Elizabeth I think, more than anyone else, it's been a difficult time."
Lisa Myers:

Friends say John and Elizabeth Edwards have separated at least for now, but still talk on a regular basis.
Edwards bought this house for Quinn and her mother to live in, in Charlotte more than 2 hours away from his home in Chapel Hill, which set the neighborhood abuzz.

Becca Thompson, Neighbor:
"I haven't heard anybody say, 'oh no,' but it's been like, 'oh gosh,' and then we thought, 'oh dear,' the press will be here alot."

Lisa Myers:
John Edwards now tries to stay out of the public spotlight. He spends time at his beach house and went to El Salvador 3 times last year, to help build houses for the poor.

Harrison Hickman:
"He's done good old-fashioned work. He's helped build hospitals, schools."
In his statement, Edwards said: "To all those I have disappointed and hurt, these words will never be enough, but I am truly sorry."

Harrison Hickman:
"He knows saying he's sorry isn't enough, but he is incredibly remorseful about the pain he's caused people. He wants to be a good father and, you know, be a good person again."

Lisa Myers:
Edwards isn't speaking publicly today, at least in part, because of an ongoing federal investigation into whether campaign money was used to try to cover up the affair. He has denied wrongdoing.
Tomorrow, we'll take a look at that investigation and at the former aide who now claims to have been at the center of that cover-up.

A politican cheats on his wife and family, first denies wrongdoing then, finally fesses up, who actually leaves his political office.......what a concept.

Let the finger pointing begin!!!

While there will be many rabid posts seeking to make this a party issue, the true fact remains this behavior knows no party lines. Until sane Americans step back and realize this is unacceptable no matter their political leaning, they will continue to do so with the support of their political partisan hacks. Edwards is a total disapointment and a loser.

Disgusting. I'm sure next we'll hear that Mark Sanford has a child with his mistress "soul mate" too. Zero integrity. No wonder this country is in the mess it's in. Look at the character flaws in the "leaders". Embarrassing.

What a scumbag. Even when he admits wrongdoing he sends an aide to do it for him.

Finger pointing-

Seems to be more honest with his life thanother men in Washington.

It amazes me, how all of us, are so quick to point fingers and behave as though, we are above such behavior. What nonsense !! Where does it say that our politicians, or any public figure, for that matter, have to be from another species? We are all humans and we all, Democrats, Republican-Libertarians, make stupid mistakes, big mistakes. The point is to learn from our mistakes and try not to commit them again. Heck, if we pulled back the covers on all of our " role models " we would be shocked and dismayed, by their behavior. The same would be case with of all of us. Nobody is perfect and let us not lose sight of that. That is a big part of our humanity. What would you rather we did, go back to burnings at the stake !! Come on, people, grow up, that's why God put erasers on pencils and some pens, too !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Oh so pathetic. I'd be so disappointed in him if he were my father. Probably not talk to him. Hope he saved some pennies for a rainy day now that he has to support two families and two lifestyles.

Move over B.J. Clinton, you have company.

"I am Quinn's father," Edwards said in a statement first to NBC News released this morning. "I will do everything in my power to provide her with the love and support she deserves.''
After lies, lies, lies Mr. Honor confesses and will provide "all the love and support she deserves" does anyone believe this creep on anything?
National Enquirer was correct all along despite the lies, obfuscation, threats, denials from the attorney who made his money cheating drug companies and doctors. Oh, yes he fits in with Obama quite well since Obama was close to naming him as a VP candidate during the lies. The lamestream media was complicit in this all along.

Case in point. A perfect poster child for the rabid. One could make reference to the 2012 presidential hopeful found hiking in Brazil, but I will leave that tit for tat to the small minded. I will just repeat that this should not be acceptable for "any" of our leaders. If you can't lead your own life correctly, you certainly can't lead a state, or country.

Not only is this guy a cheater, he's a coward down to his very core. Word of advice to America: Don't go out and buy this guy's book when he writes on on his life story.....and we all know he will.

Bill R- I totally agree... character does count.

Where the DEM vs REP party line does come into play here is in how the media had ignored this for so long- this guy was a still a contender for POTUS when their were valid concerns that the rumors of the affair were true. They were ignored for so long because Edwards was a DEM pure and simple...

The most disturbing thing about Edwards is the ease and skill with which he lies through his teeth. He almost pulled the ultimate con. This guy was a legitimate contender for the dem nominee, and if the cards had fallen right for him in Iowa and NH, who knows? He could be POTUS right now.

It's not like he spent an entire career determined to segregate black people from white people while hiding the FACT that he knocked up his black family servant when he was a teenager. I know of a Republican who did that. He was hailed as a hero and savior by the Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott and many others who unapologetically admire segregation and overt racism.s

BFD. Are we supposed to think he is "manning up"? He still doesn't have the guts to do it himself. He sends an aide? The man is a compulsive liar and a fraud as a man and a public figure. I pity his wife and children and am eternally grateful this was exposed before he was elected to a higher office.

Edwards = Lies

Typical dimocrat.

Run for President = $3.2 million
Press Releases denying sex with aid = $452,000
Trying to avoid messy divorce = $5.5 million
1 Condom = Priceless

They were ignored for so long because Edwards was a DEM pure and simple...

I'm glad you agree on Character counts......I have to say I,m surprised that you once again see this as an opportunity to make a political jab at this. While I simply don't want to play the tit for tat game, it seems that it is all Americans want to do anymore. I will mention that the leader "Newt" didn't get much media play till many years later. I could go on and on but it just serves no purpose and muddies up the real issue. If you want to claim that the MM didn't want to make claims they had no proof of, and that the National Enquierer is a bonafied outlet, by all means go right ahead. But let me remind you that the Enquierer also ran a story on Palin and an affair. If you don't think for one minute that any news outlet would jump on a story for ratings, I think you are mistaken. Will there be any time in the future we can stop looking at life through either blue or red glasses and just plain call a wrong a wrong?

Another politician who lied. Why does this not surprise us! And what will his daughter think of him in 20 years. I would hate to be any of his children. Aren't we supposed to look up to our parents and not be ashamed of who they are or what they did?

No you will not.

Either that, or you just called yourself small minded.

BTW, i agree with your line of thinking

Where the DEM vs REP party line does come into play here is in how the media had ignored this for so long- this guy was a still a contender for POTUS when their were valid concerns that the rumors of the affair were true. They were ignored for so long because Edwards was a DEM pure and simple...

So does this mean you will join me hand in hand and demand that the MSM talk about the Enquiror's report that Sarah Palin cheated on her husband with a business partner and friend of the family??? The Enquiror came out with this story during the campaign but nobody wants to talk about it which is curious because as we can see the Enquiror accurately reports marital infidelities.

Finger pointing? Yeah, toward Johnny's zipper.

Noooooo, really? We never would have guessed that was his baby. LOL

For all of you who have commented on your disappointment in Mr. Edwards, I hope you have led absolutely perfect lives. I agree with the poster above this is not a party issue, nor is it important to anyone but the parties involved. Sure I don't agree with adultery but I am no saint either. Some of our most illustrious forefathers or political leaders have skeletons in their closets but in many instances it did not hamper their ability to contribute to the fabric of this country. Remember Strom Thurmond or Thomas Jefferson anyone? Now for Strom Thurmond the mother of his illegitimate daughter was 16 and he was 22 at the time of conception. I am not sure what the legal age was at the time but a 16 year old girl is awfully young for a 22 year old. Nor do I know if the relationship between Strom Thurmond and Carrie Butler was consensual (and I admit I've not tried to find out if it was). Did I agree with most of Strom Thurmond's viewpoints? Of course not, I think he is probably one of the biggest hypocrites ever to enter politics. But was he a completely inept politician, probably not. I think there is some information that does not need to be shared with the public unless it is illegal or endangers the security of the nation (e.g., the disappearing Mark Sanford). Sharing the sexual exploits of our politicians has too much collateral damage. What about the kids involved in this? Do they really need to be exposed to this nonsense played out in the media as well as at home? Of course not. They have more than enough issues just dealing with the embarrassment and the problems at home. This is not my business and I don't want to hear about it. I would ask that the media cease reporting this type of information.

I can not believe that Gov, Qinnlin is the son of Sen. Edwards.

Somebody is playing a joke. I mean Edwards seems even younger than Quinnlin.

Please, kid me not.

Why is this news? The earthquake in Haiti more important, Healthcare, more important. Anything else going on in the world more important than something that is really only the concern of the three people involved.
Since when did we all think we can caste the first stone?
I no more care about the private lives of politicians than I do my neighbours. A politicians public life and where they stand on issues and laws are my only concern. Anything else is between them and their conscience, and non of my business.

Posted by: janet | January 21, 2010 12:55 PM

Janet-I would demand that the MSM do whatever they need to do- but to do it fairly. You know as well as I do that there has been no shortage of coverage on everything Palin and her family..from teams of reporters fact - checking her book ( when Obama's books recived no such scrutiny) or generating massive frequent flyer miles to dig up any dirt they could in Alaska... So, my guess is that if there was anything to the rumors they would have already been all over the MSM- they certainly don't need any encouragement to report on the most mundane or spectacular details of Palins life. The Edwards story has the benefit of actually being true...the MSM ignored this story until it was thrown in their faces. Climategate is another example...

Sorry, womanonamission, it is news and it should be reported. We're taught to look up to our politicians, and especially those running for the highest office in the land. If someone aspires to such an office, and wants to be looked up to by America's school children, they should also exhibit the self control to keep it in their pants for 4 years. Edwards is getting everything he deserves for his stupidity.

We must not allow those who sleep around to run this country. Thomas Jefferson, your first. We reject your Constitution based on your sex life.

OK, who's next?

While truly wonderful men who have had affairs have run the country, it is not the norm. If one can justify a little "cheating" on the one they supposedly love the most, what's wrong with a little graf while doing business for those he cares less about?

I am not a big fan of Edwards - I always thought he was nothing more than a haircut.

But he is HUMAN. This is human behavior. Anyone who believes this behavior (and the lies about it) is simply a Democratic event obviously hasn't heard of John Ensign or Mark Sanford (or for that matter, Larry Craig).

Also, unless you look in the mirror and see Jesus Christ? Trying pulling back the flaming torches and stones a bit and offer forgiveness. We may not want to elect this guy again, but everyone has a value and a purpose. Perhaps he will find his.

Well, once Elizabeth kicks the bucket, Ole Johnny's got a ready made family waiting for him!

Any man who cheats on his wife is pond scum, pure and simple.

Any man who cheats on his wife, especially when his wife is dying of an incurable disease, is about 16 levels below pond scum.

John Edwards is way lower than that!

Well, once Elizabeth kicks the bucket, Ole Johnny's got a ready made family waiting for him!

A caring "great American". SCUM!

Elizabeth will (and can) chew John up and spit him out. It was a hoot watching Reille parade her baby in front of news cameras when she was in Raleigh to testify about campaign spending. Couldn't afford a babysitter I guess.

Maybe he can have his aides cheat for him? I mean, he's got his aides already apologizing and speaking for him... Might as well get your money's worth, right Mr. Edwards?

he won the father of year award in 2007 now he`s up for the publitzer peace prize in2010 what a guy

Hey Spike,

It was quite a while ago that HUMANS developed an advanced notion of right and wrong. This was wrong. Just because you probably slept around on your wife in your job as a janitor, or whatever, doesn't mean a presidential candidate should do the same.

And at least Democrats fool around with women, not little boys like evangelists or Republicans.

Sex, Lies, and Dirty Diapers

”Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.”

The “Two Americas” boy, “Breck girl,” Jumpin’ Johnny Edwards had a great deal of experience deceiving both as a trial attorney making millions and driving up malpractice premiums and later in his personal life.

The North Carolina po’ boy became a caricature of the nouveau riche lacking finesse and flaunting his newfound wealth with his ostentatious 28,200 square foot house plus rec center set on rambling 102 acres. Then he got his comeuppance.

The fifty six year old Edwards finally came clean and admitted to what most people have suspected for a very long time, that he had dallied in the valley with campaign worker Rielle Hunter, 42, and made a baby with her almost 2 years ago.

He didn’t go quietly into that admission, figuratively kicking and screaming for more than 2 years, ever since he was caught by the National Enquirer skulking about the Beverly Hilton Hotel in the middle of a September, 2008 night and then seeking refuge in a basement toilet until the coast was clear.

See “A Modern Icarus Crashing and Burning,” http://bit.ly/6TBmj1

They say confession is good for the soul and Jumpin’ Johnny’s soul must be feeling very good today . . .

And in more breaking news - The Chicago Cubs did not win the 2009 World Series.

The difference between Edwards and Sanford is the accuracy of their shot.

I see Sarah Palin should be considered a popular public figure by the right, just not popular enough for the Main Stream Media aka the crow and shinny objects to include in their daily line up. On to John Edwards, thank Peter the Two Americas McDonald's serves Happy Meals. What does John Edwards have to say about the Two Americas plus one (corporations) today?

As an ex-Edwards supporter, I still feel sadness over the senator's transgressions and lack of integrity. Perhaps he and Rielle "you're so hot" Hunter deserve each other.

Oh my gosh, a politician who is a skilled liar. How unique!

Want to buy the Brooklyn bridge?

Shame on everyone, including the Tribune, for showing the image of this child.

Cheating doesn't mean they love their loved one less, or that if they couldn't be faithful to their loved one then they can't be faithful to their job, hobby, or anyone else (on the contrary they can be awfully faithful to their mistress). Those are assumptions, and don't take into consideration addictions or psychological disassociations ( the Madonna whore complex). People cheat for many reasons because they are selfish. It's still possible for a person to be selfish and be a great leader. It's probably a complimentary factor. Looking at the Greek and Roman leaders, it becomes very clear that somewhere between our British roots and religious plurality we've been morphed to look up to politicians in the wrong way. Instead of being able to look up to qualities, we're forced to look up to untouchable packages. Where once we looked up to bravery, we're taught that bravery is a package deal. You can't be brave and cheat (you don't necessarily have to be a coward to do so), even if you just fought a brave campaign for your country to later sleep with a mistress. I don't think that's exactly healthy. Politicians should be and forever more remain human. On that even playing field, everyone has their own appropriate standard of personal conduct (understandable), but what matters most is appropriate standard of conduct pertaining to the job. The personal ramification should remain in the personal sphere. I say this considering the increasing use of social networking sites to defame and depose people from their jobs. It is a tough line, given racism or violence, and the only response to that would be that unless it's illegal it shouldn't matter. The line between an individual and self-identification with a job has to be drawn. The interesting thing is that as Republicans embrace their imperfect figures, the Democrats begin to become more socially conservative. It looks like some sort of attempt at unity.

I love it when the sanctimonious get together, it wreaks of self-righteousness and, tons of hypocrisy. Now, that is the perfume of real stink. This blog page has that wonderful stink. Keep up the good falsity, it's a wonder to behold !! Where does it state in the manual that our leaders will be better than us? That they will not be subject to our weaknesses and shortcomings? Come on, people, you don't have to kick a guy, or gal, when they are down, or do you?
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.
