Arne Duncan, the secretary of education, is likely to hear some blow-back for his comment about how good Hurricane Katrina was for the schools of New Orleans.
But the point the Cabinet member was trying to make in an interview with Roland Martin for TV One is probably that the destruction of the city forced officials there to start from scratch with an educational system that had been dysfunctional before the storm. In the wake of Katrina, they have opened many charter schools there.
"This is a tough thing to say, but let me be really honest,'' Duncan, the former Chicago superintendent of schools appointed education secretary by President Barack Obama, says in a Washington Watch interview airing Sunday at 11 am EST.
"I think the best thing that happened to the education system in New Orleans was Hurricane Katrina,'' the secretary says in the interview. "That education system was a disaster, and it took Hurricane Katrina to wake up the community to say that 'we have to do better.'
"And the progress that they've made in four years since the hurricane is unbelievable,'' he says. "They have a chance to create a phenomenal school district.
"Long way to go, but that city was not serious about its education,'' Duncan says. "Those children were being desperately underserved prior, and the amount of progress and the amount of reform we've seen in a short amount of time has been absolutely amazing...
"Children in our country, they want to learn. They're resilient. They're tough. We have to meet them halfway. We have to give them an opportunity, and New Orleans is doing a phenomenal job of getting that system to an entirely different level.''

Comments
The biggest decline in educational standards have come since the creation of the Department of Education. I doubt that anybody from the Department of Education has taught one child in New Orleans anything. A lot of people that work for the Department of Education are nonperforming teachers that are being warehouse there.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO ASK GRAMPY MCCAIN HOW HE THINKS THE NOLA RECOVERY IS GOING
During his press conference on Tuesday in Baton Rouge, John McCain declared in strong terms that he's voted for every investigation of Hurricane Katrina.

The only problem, as the DNC has been pointing out to reporters, is he voted twice against Democratic proposals to investigate the levee failures.
After a local reporter at his Baton Rouge press conference asked why he voted against forming a commission to investigate the levee failures in New Orleans, McCain insisted that he supported every investigation -- and added that he was "not familiar" with what the reporter was talking about:

McCain voted against establishing a commission to investigate the levee failures, in a September 2005 party-line vote in which all Republicans voted against the Democratic proposal.

McCain then repeated that party-line GOP vote against a similar Dem proposal in February 2006.

Arne Duncan is easily one of Obama's better appointments. Really looking forward to robust education reform in the near future! If there is one bipartisan effort this could be it. Let's hope.

Too bad a katrina can't hit chicago - it'd be the best thing for the hopelessly corrupt, and formerly run Arne Duncan disgrace.
I guess when you throw ton of taxpayers dollars at something you'll see some improvement.
Imagine of a republican had said the exact same thing - he'd be labeled a racist.

What is Arne Duncan Smoking?
Tin-ear politics aside, notice that he gives not one piece of evidence, not one piece, that test scores are getting better in the New Orleans school system.
Duncan's grade on this assignment? F

KATRINA DIDN'T KILL ENOUGH POOR PEOPLE AND MINORITIES FOR THEIR TASTES, THEY WANT MORE DISASTERS TO HIT TARGETED PARTS OF AMERICA THAT THEY DON'T LIKE.
THE RIGHT WANT'S MORE DEATH, DESTRUCTION AND POVERTY - IT'S THE REPUBLICAN WAY OF DOING BUSINESS!

"It's time to admit that public education operates like a planned economy, a bureaucratic system in which everybody's role is spelled out in advance and
there are few incentives for innovation and productivity. It's no surprise that
our school system doesn't improve: It more resembles the communist
economy than our own market economy."
-- Albert Shanker, former AFT president, The Wall Street Journal, October 2,1989
The American Federation of Teachers falls under the AFL-CIO umbrella, a coalition of industrial unions.
The AFT has its roots in a number of urban teachers' unions from the early 1900s.
AFT affiliates are primarily located in larger cities, such as New York City, Detroit, Chicago, Washington, DC, New Orleans, and Los Angeles.
The AFT has about 1.2 million members - most of them school employees. The union has also organized health care personnel as well as day care workers, with the assistance of ACORN.
The union's most famous president arguably has been Albert Shanker, who has his roots in New York City's United Federation of Teachers. While Shanker is credited with being reform-minded, his reforms always were couched in the belief that they would not harm his organization.

I don't see what Republicans are whining about here.
99.9% of the sad sack illiterates in this country "graduate" to being lifetime members of the Republican party (the base) - without the low IQ goobers, Republican leadership wouldn't be able to dupe anyone into voting for their tax cuts for Billionaires proposals because they would know better.

NO I'M BASHING ONLY EDUCATION BECAUSE IT HAS PROVEN TO BE AN INEFFECTIVE, INEFFICIENT, CORRUPT ENTITY. THROWING MORE MONEY DOWN THIS HOLE HAS NEVER IMPROVED RESULTS. RESULTS DON'T IMPROVE BECAUSE IT IS A UNION-RUN, UNMOTIVATED, LIBERAL BASTION OF FAILURE. GOT IT?
Posted by: Bobby Mobbie | January 30, 2010 8:01 AM
Bobby Mobbie you got that right. Most school systems are no longer ran in a way that tries to better the student they are there for the unions and bureaucrats. If they were really concerned about educational standards a lot of the deadwood that call themselves teachers would be cut and kicked to the curb where they belong. Call me heartless but anybody that had to attend a public school or has had to deal with the public education system knows that it is weighed to benefit the workers and not the children. Since the creation of the Department of Education there has been a steady decline in educational standards. Can anybody name one child that the Department of Education has taught? All the Department of Education has done is raise the cost of education and create a boondoggle in regulations that most have nothing to do with teaching the children. I imagine Benjamin Franklin would spin in his grave if he knew of a thing called the Department of Education.

You liberals really need to go back to school...and finish 6th grade. Maybe then you can rise above the inane and juvenile name calling, but education isn't for everyone. That's why they have unions.
In Los Angeles, 80 percent of 9th grade students WANT to go to college. By the time they are scheduled to exit the public education system, 60% drop out.
What a tragic failure.
Posted by: Free to Watch Whatever I Want | January 31, 2010 3:32 AM
Duncan, Obama's hand-picked Secretary of Education, oversaw a district where 60% of the students dropped out before graduation, and those that did not drop out had test scores barely above random, all the while spending over $17,000 per student.
No information on test scores, no information on graduation rates, no information on any quantifiable level of performance, only that "the progress that they've made in four years since the hurricane is unbelievable."
That's a nice way to put it.

Contrary to some comments, there are some excellent public schools in Chicago. But their one common denominator: Parents committed to quality education coupled with school staffs with the same criterion. You can have the best school and staff in the world, but if you have disinterested and uncommitted parents and students, it also will fail.
Posted by: Derrick | February 1, 2010 12:34 PM
Derrick, the education department does its best to encourage parents to be disinterested. Those administrators don't take kindly to parents wanting a good, quality education for their children. The elite educators know best. That's why big cities all across the nation have the worst test scores and dismal drop out rates.
AND, you don't see the elitists taking blame now do you? OH NO, it's because of parents and overcrowding and not enough money. They have been singing that song for 50 years. Meanwhile, these very same elitist educators have received everything they asked for: more and more and more money. Teachers unions, their handpicked curriculum, constant meetings for staff, lavish conferences paid for by the taxpayer at 4 star hotels, more and higher paid administration that eats up obscene amount of the budget, and on and on.
All it takes for a child to learn is a good teacher and an interesting presentation. What's so hard here? Drop all the administration, including the DOE and just hire good teachers and present learning in a fun, interesting way.
