President Barack Obama waved to onlookers as he and first lady Michelle Obama left dinner at Nora. Photo by Mike Theiler / pool.

The president assembled two of his predecessors in the Rose Garden today to promote humanitarian aid for Haiti.
The president will travel to Massachusetts tomorrow to help a Democrat win election to the Senate and keep the party's 60-vote hold on the Senate - and with that, the president's domestic agenda.
Tonight, the president took the first lady to dinner.
Sunday is Michelle Obama's 46 birthday.
They went out tonight to Nora, near Dupont Circle. Nora bills itself as the nation's first certified organic restaurant. There was no word on the first couple's menu selection. Entrees run about $30.
The president wore a gray suit with a collarless black shirt. The first lady wore a black, long-sleeved dress.
But they were not alone.
The dinner roster included : Marian Robinson, the first lady's mother, Valerie Jarrett, special adviser to the president and personal friend of the Obamas, Eric and Cheryl Whitaker, friends of the Obamas from Chicago, Eric Holder, attorney general, and his wife Sharon Malone, Marty Nesbitt, another friend from Chicago. Susan Sher, the first lady's chief of staff., Elizabeth Alexander, who recited a poem at Obama's inauguration,. Cindy Moelis, head of the White House Fellows program, and Jocelyn Frye, policy director in the first lady's office.
Shouldn't have any trouble blowing out the candles.
They partied for nearly four hours. They arrived just after 6:30 pm EST, the first main course was served by 8:43 and desserts by 9:04. Guests started leaving at 9:40.
The first couple left the restaurant at 10:10 to the loud applause of bystanders, with about 50 people gathered at the corner of Florida Avenue and R Street singing "Happy Birthday" as the president and first Lady walked to their car.
Reporters from the attendant pool shouted "How was the party?" and "Was the First Lady surprised?" One woman replied that the first lady was indeed "surprised."

Ok, have no problem with going out for Michelle's birthday. But, if the taxpayer is footing the bill for all these folks too, then I have a problem with that! If it were just them or maybe just them and another couple and the taxpayer footed the bill, then fine. But for a cadre of folks, sorry, it should not be on our dime.

Why do you think any of it would be charged to the government? It's not a state function; it's a personal birthday party and people will pay for it out of their personal money. Just because it's in the news, doesn't mean we're paying for it.

Let's see tonight barack is going to another party and tomorrow he is going to campaign in Massachusetts. I guess Haiti can wait. It's very sad.

"I guess Haiti can wait. It's very sad."
He's supposed to go to Haiti? Why?
Last I checked, Haiti is not part of the US. Should the President personally attend every country when a catastrophe occurs?

Molly Goldberg, have you yourself done anything for the Haitians?
Posted by: another creature | January 16, 2010 10:19 PM
The Obamas hosted nearly 200 parties and social events in 2009. This equates to staging one gala White House event every two days, which is a White House record. Think about the tens of millions of dollars of our tax dollars they have blown through so they can party. Meantime in 2009, four million Americans lost their jobs as unemployment broke 10 percent, which doesn’t include the hundreds of thousands of Americans that have simply given up looking for work. Meantime in 2009, the number of American soldiers killed in Afghanistan doubled compared to 2008. Meantime in 2009, Obama parties. And he golfs. And he hangs out at the beach in Hawaii. And he takes surfing lessons. But most of all, he laughs at the American people because his con game actually worked to get him elected. Virginia. New Jersey. Massachusetts. The tide is turning. Party while you can Barry and Shelly, because you are on the way out the door.

"Why do you think any of it would be charged to the government?"
These are Chicago Democrats we are talking about here, Caroline. They never pay for anything out of their own pocket.

"Hey man, pass me a smoke," Obama said to Axelrod. "Set up a tee time in Boston tomorrow. I'll cut the Coakley thing short so we can get nine holes in and have a couple of beers. I'll have Gibbs tell the media that we're working on the Haiti thing." Axelrod smiled, finished his scotch and reached for the phone. "Could I get the number for the Boston Country Club please."

"Should the President personally attend every country when a catastrophe occurs?"
Who said attend (whatever that means)? Barack canceled a job summit for this weekend because of Haiti, but now he has time to campaign. If Barack is not going to focus on Haiti, he should stop trying to politicize it. One accomplishment during his presidency would be nice.

Wonderful 1st year for Mrs O.
She is "IT". Sorry Prez, your wife has done well.So have you but somehow, she has grabbed the light.
She is not a woman of style, she is a woman of substance. With this comes all else and, style finds it's place.
Posted by: louise caron | January 16, 2010 11:31 PM
"Nora" is a wonderful restaurant very close to the White House. Why would anyone care if the Obamas went out to celebrate Mrs. O's b-day? As for the prez being in Haiti, not a good idea. The situation there is too fluid at the moment. Too dangerous. Just today there were huge aftershocks. What is Obama supposed to do, pick his way over broken concrete, glass and dead bodies to make a point? He already pledged huge relief help and will do all he can. This is not 9/11, where "W" stood on top of a pile of rubble for the "picture of the year". It is a terrible act of nature and right now having the president there is too risky.

Just read the Entrees, and I predict, because the Amish people are exempt from Obama-Care--- they'll all choose the "Sauteed Amish Chicken Livers."
Gotta keep those horse and buggy people across the country happy, all 3,000 of em'...

As Forrest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does". Hey, Molly- did you expect the President to personally go dig out Haiti? How many Presidents do you know that did that while in office? Fool!

Derrick, are you kidding? How much vacation time did Bush take? He got a memo on his vacation in August 2001 that was titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in United States". And then what happened? Obama has taken barely a fraction of the social and vacation time than Bush took in his first year -- or subsequent years (pro-rated average)...Bush spent 490 days at his ranch in Texas and 487 days in Camp David during his presidency. for an average of 61.25 days per year in texas and 60.9 days per year in Camp David. So your comment is meaningless. Your dear friend George W Bush spent far more time on vacation than Obama could ever dreamed have spending in his first year.

Right on Derrick!
Anyone that thinks other wise is a tool & a fool.
Posted by: gigo | January 17, 2010 3:55 AM
Oh, Derrick. Don't be a hater...it's not very becoming. Just curious, how many events did the Bush's host during any year of his presidency? Any idea? Probably not, huh?
Here's a clue for ya. ALL presidents host events...lots of them. Grow up.

Don't understand how they can go out and celebrate amid the tradgedy in Haiti. If this was Bush there would be an outcry from the left.It seems the Obama's can always find time to party on the already overburdeoned raxpayers dime. i HOPE SHE'S PROUD!
Posted by: beanne | January 17, 2010 8:04 AM
Come on, this was not lavish. I think that they have a right to meet with some friends on special days after all. I do think the press usually gives them a pass on vacation days and extravagant celebrations, whereas they hounded the Bushes. However, the Obamas can celebrate their own birthdays, come on! Last I checked, $30. and entree is rather cheap. Good for them to push something different.

Happy Birthday, First Lady, Michelle Obama!!!
Posted by: Jackson Burgess | January 17, 2010 9:07 AM
Why should the Obama's spend all their time in the White House and not venture out. Are they not supposed to live? Why is every move they make so scrutinized? There were plenty before him in the oval office that hosted parties, went on vacation, smiled at their spouses. Give me a break. If they put off doing anything because something is " amiss" in the world these two people would just sit in a chair and be still. All is being done to help Haiti. If they could swoop in a fix things, I am sure all the world would. Stop complaning about the Obama's because you are so miserable.
Posted by: Karen | January 17, 2010 9:36 AM
Its amazing how some of you can fault President Obama on Haiti. Lets remember how long it took President Bush to get aid to New Orleans!! What was that, like 4 days!! It only took 24 hours for Haiti and New Orleans is a STATE!! So here's a toast to the President.
Posted by: John McNeice | January 17, 2010 9:48 AM
The press (and the public) hound the Obamas wherever they go. This is part of the job. It's perfectly fine for Michelle to have a birthday night out with hubby and friends. You are sadly out of touch if you think the taxpayers footed the bill for that dinner. I'm glad they went and wish them all well.
On the other hand. . .
It would be ultra-foolish to go to Haiti, where the presence of the President and/or the first lady would cause the VERY small and inadequate air facilities and police forces to be overwhelmed even more than they have been.
The BEST thing the President can do for Haiti (and he's DOING it) is to call attention to the plight and needs of its citizens and continue to ask that attention be paid and relief supplies and personnel be forthcoming. He has asked former
Presidents Clinton and Bush to be the face of fundraising effots and that is absolutely brilliant.
Try being a patriot and get your humanity engaged. Just try it.
You'll feel much better.

I see that after a year in office you Obama haters are still wasting your time posting ridiculous stuff. Are you going to waste another 3 or 7 years? You should find something productive to do. Your rants are getting old.

Has everyone lost their mind? If my defense in a trial was "Well Gacy and Dommer killed at least ten more people then me!" would you expect me to go free? NO! If Bush threw more parties then Obama, fine, great, I'm overjoyed that you can do math. But while I would celebrate my wifes birthday, I hardly think that I would take the time to plan a surprise party in the midst of an international crysis. And incase you haven't been watching the news it is indeed an international crysis. I thought the Democrats were the ones bellowing about how we need to start being better neighbors and all? But when it comes to defending their new guy they spring to his defense. "What is he supposed to do? Go dig them out?! What a laughable idea!" O well I'm sorry, I thought that when something really bad happened that affected the world that the president would take a moment and lend a shoulder to cry on... o wait, tonights his wifes birthday.... well all those people are already dead so why bother? Book me a table at Noras!

HAVE EITHER OF YOU OR any of you sent any monies to our own not-for-profit agencies where there are kids at risk 24/7, and they are now underfunded. Seems like we
should be helping our own instead of draining our pockets in taxes and strong-armed donations to
Haiti.

Lighten up people. The President usually pays for the family's food; & this was a personal outing. There were probably Secret Service costs, but that's the price of doing business.
And why should the president go to Haiti? The last thing Haiti needs is resources used to support a Presidential visit. And besides, it appears the President is on top of the US response to the earthquake.
Posted by: strut2k | January 17, 2010 2:54 PM
I'm no BO fan, but I would say his time is much better spent celebrating the birthday of his wife than troubling himself with Haiti. When did that become our number one issue? The world is a big place, let other nations stand up to help. Are there not American children homeless and hungry and at risk for drugs and prostitution??? Yes. We need to toss some cash and help their way but then turn to look out for ourselves.
Posted by: Camilla | January 17, 2010 4:02 PM
Well said Derrick. And hopefully the Obama's will foot the bills for the security, travel etc for this party. I also resent having to pay anything for his campaign trips to read a canned speach.
Posted by: sorta | January 17, 2010 4:03 PM
Bush was partying with McCain on his birthday during Katrina and that happened on American soil,no one complained then. Why can't Obama celebrate his wife b-day for four hours you idiots.
Posted by: Maria | January 17, 2010 6:08 PM
It is perfectly fine that the Obamas celebrate the First Lady's birthday. Nora is a very quaint, smal restaurant in DC. I am sure they were not whooping it up, and even if they were, why does this bother so many people who have made negative comments? Also, President Obama should NOT go to Haiti just now. The situation is too fluid and too dangerous. He has pledged much help, troops and money. Please, give our president a chance! This is not 9/11, this is another country suffereing a teriible tragedy, but Mr. Obama stpeed right up to the plate to help. Happy birthday, Mrs. Obama, you look outstanding!

I think the President gets a salary for the hard thankless work he does. I am certain he can afford to take his wife and friends for dinner. The dinners at the White House are most likely paid for with donations people make to the Democratic Party. Happy Birday Michelle and may you have many more!

One week later and US airlift finally arrives in Haiti. Racist response as some fools declared in New Orleans? No! Rather a logistical nightmare, lack of cooperation and poor planning by the locals.
No need for US Coast Guard directed by President Bush to save more than 35,000 citizens from sure death in what everyone deems the worst natural disaster in American history.
Let's all get behind relief in Haiti and help the country find sustenance well into the future.
Some of these vicious comments make me believe that America will face its own disaster - that will destroy it. America, can't we all just get along?

If Bush were still in office, or rather if any president were still in office, his life would not be a scrutinized as the Pres. Obama's. Let's face it, it is because he is an African Americal that every move he makes is under survalence. "i mean every move." Here he is trying to enphasize the importance of an education and to pursue your highest goal in life and "white" parents did not want their children exposed to this and yet, those same "white" parents permitted their children to hear that message from "Bush" What does that tell you? Racism is alive and kicking, but people try to hide it.
Just let the man do his job and enjoy life like anyone else should, without us passing judgment.
