President Barack Obama, allowing that he has run into a "buzz saw,'' carried his pitch for economic revival, health-care and an agenda now threatened by political upheaval to battleground Ohio today.
"We've gotten pretty far down the road,'' an animated president said of his work in Washington, apparently stalled now after months of debate over health-care legislation.
"But I've got to admit,'' Obama said. "We hit a little bit of a buzz saw along the way... This is what happens in Congress. It's just an ugly process... The longer it takes, the uglier it looks.''
Pointing to the special Senate election in Massachusetts this week which cost his party its filibuster-proof super-majority in the Senate, the president told an audience at a community college in Lorain County:
"I know folks in Washington are in a little bit of a frenzy this week, trying to figure out what the election in Massachusetts the other day means,'' he said. "This is what they do...
"But this is not about me,'' Obama said, in an open-collared, colloquial appeal. "This is about you....
"I didn't take this up to boost my poll numbers... You know the way to boost your poll numbers is not to do anything.... I didn't take this on to score political points. There are some people who think, 'If Obama loses, we all win.' But you know what? I think I win when you win.''
Vowing to continue his fight for an overhaul of health-care insurance, the president said: "I had no illusions when I took this on that this was going to be hard.... I had a whole bunch of political advisors telling me this may not be the smartest thing to do - 'You've got a lot on your plate.... Don't do it.' But health care, the president said, "is part of the drag on our economy.''
Ohio may have served as Obama's "Main Street'' in this campaign-styled outing to tout his economic stimulus plans - stopping for a hamburger lunch in a bar, meeting with workers in a factory and holding a town-hall styled session at a community college in Lorain County - but these could be mean streets for his party in 2010.
(President Obama is pictured speaking at the town hall meeting at Lorain County Community College, in Elyria, Ohio, today. Photo by Saul Loeb / AFP / Getty Images.)
In a bid to stoke the president's own sagging job-approval, renew the White House's agenda for economic revival and energize his party as well, Obama traveled today to Ohio, both a bellwether and a perennial battleground. Next week, he will target another key state, Florida.
In 2008, Obama only narrowly carried Ohio, which has voted for every winner of the White House since 1960. And now, Ohio has both an open U.S. Senate seat - with the announced retirement of Republican Sen. George Voinovich - and a fight for the governor's mansion. A popular former Republican congressman, John Kasich, is lining up for a chance to challenge Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland, trailing in polls.
Unemployment has climbed to 10.9 percent in Ohio, it was announced today as the president traveled there.
The day after the president's nationally televised State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on Wednesday, both the president and Vice President Joe Biden plan to visit the Tampa area.
Obama only narrowly carried Florida in 2008. Democrats are attempting to take the Florida governor's office in November, with Republican Gov. Charlie Crist facing a fight within his own party for nomination for an open GOP-held Senate seat.
Unemployment has risen to 11.8 percent in Florida.
Offering an often-heard complaint about "the bubble'' that is Washington, the president told his audience today: "Nothing beats a day where I can an escape - I break out.''
The president has been touting his economic stimulus act as a job-saving measure responsible for creating or saving 1.5 million jobs during a recession which has shed many millions more.
"I know these have been difficult and unsettling times for people in Elyria, in Ohio, and across our country,'' Obama told his audience at the community college today. "I walked into office a year ago in the middle of a raging economic storm that was wreaking devastation on your town and in communities everywhere...
Defending his bailout of the auto industry and fight for tougher banking regulation and citing the impact of the economic recovery act that he signed one month into office, the president said: "Today, because we took those actions, the worst of this economic storm has passed.'' He also acknowledged: "But families like yours and communities like this one are still reeling from the devastation it left in its wake.''
Donning protective eyeglasses, the president had taken a tour of EMC Precision Machining, treading past heavy industrial machinery and speaking with workers. The firm, which maintains that business is on the rebound, has fewer employees today - 44 - than it had a year ago, 77.
Obama also toured the Wind Turbine Manufacturing and Fab Lab facilities at the college - emblematic of his pitch that federal investment in "green'' energy production will provide an economic engine as well.
The White House, which had planned this trip to Lorain County well before the president's party lost its super-majority in the Senate in a surprise special election loss in Massachusetts this week, has billed this as another stop on Obama's "White House to Main Street Tour.''
In Washington, House Minority Leader John Boehner, an Ohio Republican who has long hammered Obama with a repeating refrain of "Where are the Jobs,'' said today that the president has failed to deliver on a promise of jobs that he has made before in the Buckeye State.
"When he last visited Elyria, candidate Obama promised that as president he would enact a 'job creation agenda.'' Boehner said.
"Yet for the past year, Ohioans have watched anxiously as Washington Democrats', with the approval of President Obama, have pushed a job-killing agenda that includes a 'stimulus' that isn't working, a government takeover of health care that will raise taxes... a 'cap and trade' national energy tax (and other measures) that will devastate Ohio's economy and kill jobs at a time we can least afford it.''
The president also was welcomed at his landing in Cleveland today with an Op-ed signed by Boehner in the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
"Just three days have passed since voters in Massachusetts, one of the bluest of blue states, delivered the president a clear, stinging indictment of his big-government agenda by electing Republican Scott Brown to fill the U.S. Senate seat held for 47 years by the late Ted Kennedy,'' Boehner wrote.
"For more than nine months, a political rebellion has been brewing as Americans have watched with angst as Washington Democrats have pushed job-killing policies that have only made a bad jobs situation even worse. Nowhere is this more evident than in the state of Ohio.''
In Ohio, the president was spotlighting one of the states that will be most heavily contested as Republicans fight for an increasing share of the Senate and House. Obama carried Ohio with just 51.2 percent of the vote. George W. Bush carried Ohio with a narrower margin in 2004.
Yet Obama's own standing has slipped in Ohio, as it has nationally. In April, the Ohio Poll conducted by the University of Cincinnati found that 63 percent of Ohioans approved of the job that Obama was performing as president. At the end of October, the latest Ohio Poll on this question measured his job approval at 52 percent.
Moreover, more Ohioans said they disapprove (53 percent) than approve (45 percent) of Obama's handling of the economy.
But when the going has gotten tough for Obama in the White House, the president has gone campaigning.
In Elyria today, the president's motorcade made an unscheduled campaign-styled stop at a bar and restaurant in Elyria -- Smitty's, bearing the slogan: "Where Friends Meet'' - for a hamburger lunch.
Inside, Obama met 98-year-old Charles Raynor. "I am just pleased to see Charlie is still eating fries at 98," Obama said, posing for photos.
Greeting Shawn Hatcher, celebrating his 42nd birthday, the president proclaimed: "Nothing wrong with 42. I am 48... I am going to buy this guy's lunch."
Told the man's order was chili, Obama said: "A bowl of Chili, I can afford."

Whack-a-doodle Teabagger Scotty Brown getting elected in MA is actually a blessing in disguise for the Dems.
Brown only got elected because of a backlash against a weak health care bill and Wall Street. The people of MA don't want to kill the healthcare bill, they want a better one.
.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/20/obama-backers-more-commit_n_429673.html
Now the Dems can put Brown's stones in a vice and force him on the record to vote against healthcare reform and the Wall Street reform bills. And once he does that the Dems can make the heallth care bill better and pass that and everything else the very same way Republicans passed everything during the Bush years - reconciliation.
Brown has a choice now. He can vote the way the right wing teabagger nutjobs want him to vote and ruin any chance he'll ever have of getting re-elected in 2012 (and still see those bills pass through reconciliation anyway), or he can reign in his inner right wing craziness and vote with the Dems as a moderate Republican.
The Dems never had a real 60 votes in congress anyway with right wing sellouts like Joe Lieberman intentionally screwing things up. Now they don't have to worry about that, and they shouldn't.
Choose wisely Naked Scotty.

President Obama should take his visions of America, on the road. I heared him in Ohio and I was, once again, energized. He is a great speaker and gets his message out, with clarity and humanity. He should go out to these Town Hall meetings, in every state and tell his constituents what his ambitions are, what his hopes are, for all of America. If he did that, every few weeks, he would be able to coax some of those " do-nothing " Republican-Libertarians into helping him, get America working again. Way to to go, President Obama. You hit a grand slam in Ohio, today.

If the Wingnutters still think that nude model Scott Brown means their on ther way back to being accepted by the American people, they're wrong. Just ask Fox.
Obama - Romney 47-35.
Obama - Palin 55-31.
Obama - Gingrich 53-29.
Each margin includes a healthy lead among independent voters.

Ma voters didn't vote for naked Scotty Brown, they rebelled against Dems. They want a better health care bill and more cracking down on Wall Street from the Dems. Brown can either vote with the Dems on those things or he can lose his seat and watch those bills pass anyway.
Brown will get two years in MA to do the right thing. He'll either vote 90% of the time with the Democrats or he will lose his seat to a Dem in '12.
Brown is already walking back his past associations and endorsements of Teabagger Republican candidates.

President Obama, the Democratic and Republican Leadership in Washington and their supporters need to stop their partisan and political games and seriously address the economic and unemployment issues facing the country. They have wasted a whole year debating a health reform bill while the most important issues facing the country is jobs and jump starting the economy. Meanwhile while their more fervent supporters (just look at the posts in this paper) have been blaming the other side for what went wrong, the economy and employment picture grows even grimmer. I am an Executive Recruiter and I can tell you this is the Worst job market by far I have ever seen in my 24 years in the business. And it has not been getting any better as a few in the news media and government have suggested. Even though the numbers of layoffs have come down people continue to be let ago at an alarming rate. Those new numbers compounded with those already laid off makes the unemployment situation very bad. And if we should have a double dip recession this year it will make this horrible situation even worse. Folks, this is Not a Democratic or Republican issue and problem. This is an American problem. It is time we pressure our Democratic and Republican representatives, including the President, to stop playing their political games and start working together. Enough is enough. That is what the voters of Massachusetts were saying last Tuesday. I hope our leaders in Washington, both Democrat and Republican, were listening.

former republican, nice to hear from you. I can always count on you for the official canned talking point from the left. Is that really what you guys are going with? That the Brown election was a blessing? OK. Doesn't that ignore the fact that Dems were on the verge of reconciling the two bills and there was nothing the GOP could do to stop it? Listen to the comments from the WH and Dems in Congress. They are not going to ram anything through now. Anything that comes through now will be watered down by the evil GOP. The Dems are terrified of the November elections, no matter how hard they try to spin it. And no copy and paste today from DailyKos? I think their "poll" still has Coakley ahead of Brown. She's looking strong. She just needs to bring it home.

The whole picture changes when you add the public option to the current polling, it becomes wildly popular.
Those polls aren't fooling anyone, Democrats don't like the current health care bill, they want it to go farther, that's why polling on it sank. There's always going to be about 35% against any health care bill because Republicans are reflexively stupid. The rest of that polling is from Dems wanting more done than is currently being offered. Do you really think everyone in the Dem party loves Joe Lieberman? Puleeeease.

Ma voters are smarter than the low IQ goobers from the south that your GOPer team depends on, Terri. There's a very good reason why unions basically sat out that election, maybe someday you'll figure that out but I doubt it.
And by the way, the more I see Wall Street tank the better, it tells me we're on the right path with reform.
Pass good legislation and it will stand the test of time, pass a good health care bill and there's no way that Repugs would ever let it expire
Go ahead and have the last word, I hear you've got a hang up with doing that.

You got that right, you Bush&Cheney look-a-likes. Try not to forget who won the last presidential election. It's President Obama and Vice-President Biden, for another 3 years. I know you won't forget that, any time soon. Enjoy the ride !!

HHH,
The unions didn't sit out - they voted for Brown.
The more you see Wall Street tank, the worse your 401k gets (assuming you have a job).

I think their "poll" still has Coakley ahead of Brown. She's looking strong. She just needs to bring it home.

Show us a poll that says different or shut your pie hole.

um....you want me to find a poll that refutes Coakley being ahead? Don't the results refute it? And you quote me as saying the Dems are "doomed". Show me where I said that.

HHH, I didn't say people liked Republicans. Or rethuglicans, teabaggers, knuckledraggers, reich wingers, darth cheney, etc., etc. The GOP got crushed in 06 and 08. No doubt about it. But this is only a two party system. When things aren't going well, America throws out the incumbents. If Dems think they are immune from that, they are sadly mistaken. They need to drop this far left agenda and move back toward the middle. Fortunately for Dems, Obama is a shrewd politician, and will see the writing on the wall. He will become much more moderate to try to win back independents. He has to balance that with keeping his nutty liberal base happy. But he is a master at that. Will some populist rhetoric about evil banks pacify you? Will that help you forget about health care?
------------
Incidentally, the only one who calls me Peaches and Herb is the great John E. Are you him, or some cheap imitation? And just out of curiosity, why all the screen names? Are you being tricky? I think it's working. No one can tell you still post here.

Unemployment has climbed to 10.9 percent in Ohio, it was announced today as the president traveled there.
Unemployment has risen to 11.8 percent in Florida.

How does a Socialist create jobs? What’s he gonna do? Turn on the 'Big Engines of Socialism'? This would be like saying that a major league pitcher with a 37 mph fastball throws “heat”. This is totally nonsensical and just wasting our time, which probably isn't worth much either.

So, Mustapha was a big hit in the Buckeye state. That must have been special. What is more, I agree with you on a Mustapha Tour of the motherland. Do a road show. He could model it on woody wilson’s League of Nations rail tour. That’s exactly what he should do.
If the Koolaid inventory is in good stead, maybe you could gas up the plane and get that tour started. Hydrocarbons will be burned off, but hey, that would be just a small sacrifice for such a great cause as this. Let Americans hear more of the details for the latest lab experiments that the progressives of the democrat party plan to unleash on their personal body parts.
“Hopefully” you or some of the other Koolaid drinkers could throw in and make this happen. We breathlessly await for that LN model tour and some of Mustapha's exalted speeches.

Terry, my comment that a Republican Senator elected and the Dow drops 600 points in three days is no different that your earlier post.
NATIONAL DEBT: On day Mr. Obama took office: $10.626 trillion
• One year later: $12.319 trillion
• Increase on Mr. Obama's watch: $1.693 trillion
I'm sure you know that the US budget year is from October to September. The majority of the first years budget was Bush's but you still make an idiotic post similar to mine. And don't state that the problem was the stimulas, because only a small percentage has been spent so far.

Really Terri? Is that from your personal research of going door to door and interviewing every union member in Ma or did you pull that out of your backside like you usually do? Union members did whatever they wanted to because no one supported Coakley, so I can't say that I'm shocked. But I can say that I find it laughable that you think Brown is going to have strong union support from now on.
Wall Street started tanking the day after nude model Scotty was elected. You know what that means....Sell sell sell, the guy's a loser !!!
I could buy and sell a poser like you, Terri. The difference between you and I is I actually have some wealth and I want others to at least have the basics, like health care. In your case, you're just a work-a-day Joe who's a wannabe rich guy and thinks that if he's closes his eyes and dreams hard enough then all his hard work of helping Republicans pass tax cuts for billionaires will somehow rub off on him and make him a rich guy too. It's like a girl dreaming about getting a magic flying pony for X-Mas.

pd,
The budget was created during President Bush's last year. 100% of that debt caused by spending was created BO. He could choose not to spend. Let's see what Oct, 2009 thru 2010 brings in terms of spending and increasing teh debt.
HHH,
According to the WSJ, union voters broke 49% to 46% in favor of Brown. Where did I say "Brown is going to have strong union support from now on."?
You wall street correlation of 3 days of drops coinciding with Brown's election is amazing. The main cause of this is the proposed regulations on the banks by BO. Like PD, you could work on the climate models at Penn State.
And you know my wealth how? Based upon your posts, I would judge your analytical skills to be below average. Therefore, if you have the wealth you claim, I would suggest you seek professional help to manage it.

Terry, this poster's analytical skills are still superior to your in every way.
You have made a 2nd career out of placing labels on those who post here, declaring who is the leftie and who is on your side.
You also seem to think you can peg their gender and age.
You are completely full of yourself on every level.

Still Writing Wrong,
First, when it comes to things economic, I have forgetten more than you will ever learn. Second, if I made a career out these postings, that would mean I am getting paid - which I am not.
Two big factual errors in one paragraphs, not to mention your opinions are wrong.

Why not read my post to the same post you made under the name HHH? If I had your stupidity, I would try to hide my identity also. You are sort of like little JohnnyE.

Terry,
EZ on those democrats, like HHH. They are riffling through your bank statements now, or maybe they just do it telepathicly.
They know, or they think they know, my skin color. When Israel has to defend itself, liberals, leftists, democrats can’t figure out right from wrong. They can’t recognize the very measured response of a sovereign democratic nation versus the life work of a bunch of semi-organized terrorists. But yet they know how much Terry is worth and what color Django’s skin is. Some amazing people, reside in this swamp.

Terry, Your post "The budget was created during President Bush's last year. 100% of that debt caused by spending was created BO. He could choose not to spend. " doesn't make sense. A president can not change a federal budget just because he wants to. 100%? Did Beck or Limbaugh tell you that? Obama was only in office 8 of the 12 months. It sounds like Fox has diminished your mental capacity.
Posted by: pd | January 23, 2010 6:15 PM
pd,
It's not the budget process that determines spending, its the appropriations porcess. Did you have to take civics while you were attending your taxpayer funded education?

I know it might be asking the impossible, given the fact that these are Republican-Libertarians and the only way you get there, is by not educating yourselves, both formally and informally. So, if I might seize their attention for 5 minutes, I'm sure they can control their ADD, for that long, here are some facts you may find informative. More likely though, you will rush to find a counterattack, but, here it goes, anyway. Concerning the Gramm-Leach-Blily Act of 1999:
" Respective versions of the legislation were introduced in the U.S. Senate by Phil Gramm (Republican of Texas) and in the U.S. House of Representatives by Jim Leach (R-Iowa). The third lawmaker associated with the bill was Rep. Thomas J. Bliley, Jr. (R-Virginia), Chairman of the House Commerce Committee from 1995 to 2001.
The House passed its version of the Financial Services Act of 1999 on July 1st by a bipartisan vote of 343-86 (|Republicans 205–16; Democrats 138–69; Independent/Socialist 0–1),[3] [4] [5] two months after the Senate had already passed its version of the bill on May 6th by a much-narrower 54–44 vote along basically-partisan lines (53 Republicans and one Democrat in favor; 44 Democrats opposed).[6] [7] [8] [9]
When the two chambers could not agree on a joint version of the bill, the House voted on July 30th by a vote of 241-132 (R 58-131; D 182-1; Ind. 1–0) to instruct its negotiators to work for a law which ensured that consumers enjoyed medical and financial privacy as well as "robust competition and equal and non-discriminatory access to financial services and economic opportunities in their communities" (i.e., protection against exclusionary redlining).[10]
The bill then moved to a joint conference committee to work out the differences between the Senate and House versions. Democrats agreed to support the bill after Republicans agreed to strengthen provisions of the anti-redlining Community Reinvestment Act and address certain privacy concerns; the conference committee then finished its work by the beginning of November.[8] [11] On November 4th, the final bill resolving the differences was passed by the Senate 90-8,[12] [13] and by the House 362-57.[14] [15] This legislation (whose voting margins, if repeated, would easily have overcome any Presidential veto) was signed into law by Democratic President Bill Clinton on November 12, 1999.[16]" Source:Wikipedia.
