Obama's 50-50 standing: One year in: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Mark Silva

A new poll released today suggests that half of all Americans would vote for someone other than President Barack Obama, if the 2012 election were being held today.

That's 37 percent who would "definitely'' vote for someone else, and 13 percent who "probably'' would, in the survey of 1,200 adults sponsored by the National Journal and Allstate.

The problem with the findings of this Heartland Monitor Poll is threefold: Not all adults vote, there is no opponent against which to measure the president in this hypothetical case and the election is not being held today.

But that figure, 50, is significant.

It shows up elsewhere, too -- as in The Gallup Poll's daily tracking of the president's public job approval, 50 percent in the latest surveys.

It shows up in the virtual 50-50 split on the question of whether the Obama presidency, one year in, has been a "success'' or a "failure.'' In the CNN-sponsored poll run by Opinion Research Corp., 48 percent said failure, 47 percent success.

it shows up 50-50 in the Quinnipiac University poll on the president's uccess and failure -- 45-45, actually.

There's also a virtual 50-50 split on the question of support for the president's healthcare legislation in the Heartland poll, with 44 percent support and 46 percent opposition in a Jan. 3-5 survey with a margin of error of 2.8 percent.

That 50-50 is also what one might expect in a heads-or-tails toss of a coin. So, one year in, with the first anniversary of Obama's presidency arriving next week, it could well be a toss-up, overall, this question of how well the president is doing.

However, unlike the conclusions of failure or success drawn after only one year in office, and unlike the contest in which the president has no opposition, the 2012 election will provide a far more decisive judgment on the performance of the 44th president.

That leaves nearly three years of performance and endless polling, and one nominated rival, to move the numbers one way or the other.

Republicans Delivered the Worst Decade in Modern U.S. History !

The Republican Party of No and Obstruction, at least where sending any kind of economic lifelines to the American people are concerned, sure had no problem with turning over our national treasury to the fat cats on Wall St. And the GOP's blind faith in a unfettered free market economy did nothing other than make a handful of wealthy folks much richer while the majority of us grew much poorer. The Reagan/Bush/W. Bush's legacies of failure brought this once great nation to its knees.

At least when W. ran his companies into the ground Daddy's friends would step up and bail junior out. But Daddy's buddies are nowhere to be found now that W. and his GOP drove the country straight to hell. Tragically for the American taxpayers, we, our children, our grandchildren and great grandchildren will have to clean up the squalor. It will take generations to undo the GOP's financial carnage.

A recent article published in the Washington Post reveals that the American worker lost big time during the past decade.

This news should come as no surprise to any hard working middle class American. We have been living the pain for 10 long years.

"The past decade was the worst for the U.S. economy in modern times, a sharp reversal from a long period of prosperity that is leading economists and policymakers to fundamentally rethink the underpinnings of the nation's growth. It was, according to a wide range of data, a lost decade for American workers. The decade began in a moment of triumphalism -- there was a current of thought among economists in 1999 that recessions were a thing of the past. By the end, there were two, bookends to a debt-driven expansion that was neither robust nor sustainable."
.

The Washington Post also reveals that there has been zero net job creation since December 1999. Conditions have not been this grim for decades. Essentially, the American worker has not had a raise in a very long time.

"Middle-income households made less in 2008, when adjusted for inflation, than they did in 1999 -- and the number is sure to have declined further during a difficult 2009. The Aughts were the first decade of falling median incomes since figures were first compiled in the 1960s."

It's not surprising that the Republican party would be trying to blame their failures on Pres Obama after only 11 months, they're a bunch of sociopathic losers who aren't exactly known for taking responsibilty for their actions.

Don't forget the naughts (2000-2009), because this decade, no matter what anyone on the right might say, was conservatism on trial. You want less taxes? You got less taxes. You want less regulation? You got less regulation. Open markets? Wide open. An illusuion of security in place of rights? Hey, presto. You want unlimited power given to military contractors so they can kick butt and take names? Man, we handed out boots and pencils by the thousands. Everything, everything, that ever showed up on a drooled-over right wing wish list got implemented -- with a side order of Freedom Fries.

They will try to disown it, and God knows if I was responsible for this mess I'd be disowning it, too. But the truth is that the conservatives got everything they wanted in the decade just past, everything that they've claimed for forty years would make America "great again". They didn't fart around with any "red dog Republicans." They rolled over their moderates and implemented a conservative dream.

What did we get for it? We got an economy in ruins, a government in massive debt, unending war, and the repudiation of the world. There's no doubt that Republicans want you to forget the last decade, because if you remember... if you remember when you went down to the water hole and were jumped by every lunacy that ever emerged from the wet dreams of Grover Norquist and Dick Cheney, well, it's not likely that you'd give them a chance to do it again.

Because they will. Given half a chance -- less than half -- they'll do it again, only worse. Because that's the way conservatism works.

Remember when the only answer to every economic problem was "cut taxes for the rich?" We have a surplus. Good, let's cut taxes for the rich. We have a deficit. Hey, cut taxes for the rich even more! That little motto was unchanging even when it was clear that the tax cuts for the rich were increasing the burden on everyone but the wealthy. That's just a subset of the great conservative battle whine which is now and forever "we didn't go far enough." If deregulation led to a crash, it's because we didn't deregulate enough. If the wars aren't won, it's because we haven't started enough wars. If there are people still clinging to their rights, it's because we haven't done enough to make them afraid.

Forget the naughts, and you'll forget that conservatives had another chance to prove all their ideas, and that their ideas utterly and completely failed. Again.

The point of remembering bad events is to stop them from repeating. So remember, and remind others if they start to forget. Because really, this is one trip to the water hole we can't afford to repeat.

Pres Obama has done a great job, considering what he's up against - Al Qaeda and the Republican Party.

The reality is that the Republicans aren't almost rooting against recovery, they are rooting against recovery. They're rooting against health care reform. They're rooting against anything good coming from this presidency. They're rooting against this president!

The reality is that the Republicans know that for one of them to return to the Oval Office, and for their party to retake one or both houses of Congress, this presidency must be perceived as a failure. The consequences to the country of this presidency actually being a failure are irrelevant to them. They want it to fail. They work for it to fail. They know that any successes by this president undermine their party's chances, so they will do their best to prevent any successes, in any ways they can. The Republicans are a party that impeached a twice-elected president for lying about sex. There is no depth too low, and no sewage too rank, for their pernicious partisan wallowing.

Despite his attempts at bipartisan comity, the Republicans have undermined President Obama in every way they have deemed it possible. They spent half a year pretending to negotiate health care reform, and then, despite his compromising and capitulating in countless ways, they didn't give him a single vote. No matter his intentions, theirs remain singular and monomaniacal. They want his presidency destroyed. They want his agenda destroyed. And as they proved with President Clinton, if they consider it necessary in the pursuit of their aims, they won't hesitate to try to destroy President Obama, personally. That's who they are. If they weren't that despicable, they could not perpetually pursue their despicable agenda.

Republicans aren't interested in bipartisanship. They will not negotiate in good faith. They see any Democratic attempts at bipartisanship as but unilateral surrender. Their base is comprised of theocrats and kleptocrats. The former believe they are doing divine work. That never ends. The latter want to hoard every last bit of material wealth they can steal. They literally want to own the world. That admits no compromise.

Although these polls make good topics for discussion it is only one year into the first term of the Obama presidency. If this poll had been taken in the middle of the 2012 Presidential Election and Obama and his Republican opponent were tied 50% to 50%, then this poll would be very important. But 2012 in political terms is a very long time off and who knows that is going to happen between now and then.

HAHAHA!!!

FROM THE "IT'S SO STUPID YOU CAN'T MAKE IT UP" FILE.

The Neocon loving/right wing nutbags at the Heritage Foundation want to send Bush to Haiti.
.
"Clearly former President Clinton, who was already named as the U.N. envoy on Haiti, is a logical choice. President Obama should also reach out to a senior Republican figure, perhaps former President George W. Bush, to lead the bipartisan effort for the Republicans."

It was such a fantastic success the last time W was in charge of helping out poor people suffering from a natural disaster. Who wouldn't want a repeat of that experience? This is the Republican disconnect from reality on full display.

What this poll doesn't show is that Republicans have absolutely No One who would even come close to getting 50% of the American vote for President.

Palin?, Huckabee?, Romney?, Pawlenty? etc etc etc......I rest my case.

Panty Waist Pablo,
Were you sleeping when your hero W. waited SIX DAYS to stop pretending like he was cutting brush on his fake ranch to address the Shoe Bomber situation?

Pantywaist Paula,
If you are so frustrated and bothered by Obama, tune him out. Pay him no attention and carry on with your little life. He will be the President until at least 2012 and maybe/ probably longer. Get over it.
The dysfunctional GOP have absolutely nobody they can run who can get 50% of the vote.

One more time...please explain Bush's "6" day delay for the shoe bomber....Since you continually post this I can only assume you:
1) Don't have an answer
2) Don't care
3) Can't read

Doug R.
The way panty waist is cratering in the polls any one who runs against him won't need anywhere near 50% of the vote to send him packing.
Oh, and tell Gotti...W is no longer President.

Paulo

What happened to the landslide? has some of the dirt run back up the hill?

It looks as if many of the "independants" are changing their minds and a few democrats are dropping the sheeple skins for a breath of fresh air.

We'll see.

Anybody notice that this section of the paper has been reduced to six liberal stooges protecting their leader and babbling about things no sane American care about?

Bottom line: Obama hasn't delivered. That is why his numbers are where they are. People are fed up with the same idiots on the right and we see commeting here in this section . ...and their attitude...well Bushed sucked therefore it is ok if we have a terrible president from a different party.

Maybe that suits you idiots, but for the EDUCATED America we really want qualified honest leaders that can manage the country's and have its best interest at heart.

As the poll makes clear, only 39% of Americans would vote again for Obama, versus 50% who wouldn't. This 11% margin is much greater than the 6% margin by which Obama won in 2008.

We all know that if Obama were a Republican, the DNC Swamp headline would read "Obama would lose in Landslide if election were Today"

One year in and more and more people losing their homes...want unstable try losing your job and replacing it with 2 that don't measure up to your old salary...meanwhile you read each night about record bonuses in a bailed out sector.....
BarackObama: The people need your help with loan modifications.

No, but we've noticed that anti American Wingnut rubes like you are here everyday trying in vain to convince everyone that Obama should have cleaned up eight years worth of Republican messes already

Obama is a staggering con man. Nothing more. The sooner we rid ourselves of his lies and con games, the better for America and the world. It begins in November by getting Congress out of the hands of the insane socialists Pelosi and Reid.

Quit your crying Brucie,
Your beloved Republicans got kicked to the curb because they wet the bed when they were in power, not because there was some sort of media conspiracy. In fact, Republicans haven't won a significant national election in over five years now. And they rigged the vote (Ohio) to get that one.

Maybe if you Republican clowns would shut your pieholes and actually come up with some good policy proposals that would change, otherwise I don't see you nutbags ever holding a majority in congress again.

former republican, I think you are being a little harsh on Obama in calling the decision to send Bush to Haiti a "disconnect from reality" and "so stupid you can't make it up".

Being an independant, you validate my point by being nothing more than a cheerleader for a failed President.

Idiot, lets talk about this....why didn't Obama THINK about the problems with giving banks free money would cause....now he is demanding they give up their bonuses or pay a fee....what a stupid idea...the banks will simply pass any 'fees' onto the public...he is a complete failure...like the rest of America, take off the blinders and OBSERVE the world for once.

We must acknowledge however, that the Leftists here, have undying love for their “Hope and Change” Marxist guy. There is no getting around that.

One area that Mustapha and his fellow Marxists have been successful, in the face of that 48% failure number, is in their War on Energy. I fear though that Amerika is in danger of falling behind the Venezuela Model. Venezuela has already been enjoying rolling blackouts in their capital city. Chavez just suspended them but only to allow Amerika to have a chance to catch up. Chavez is a congenial guy.

Mustapha needs to get out there, make one of his fabulous speeches and rally Pelosi and Reid to try and keep pace with Venezuela’s socialist model of flicking the lights off. Everybody is equal in the dark. Maybe Pelosi and Reid could pass one of their 2700 pages of socialist crap p.o.s. legislation. If you fall too far behind, you will never catch up. “Hope and Change”, Amerika. It’s a Reality show, now.
