Congratulations, your credit limit has been increased.

To $14.3 trillion.

In one of the last hurrahs for the Senate Democrats' waning 60-vote super-majority, the Senate today voted 60-39 to raise the authorized ceiling on the accrued national debt by $1.9 trillion.

The measure places the government on track for a $14.3 trillion debt, sparing the majority another vote on the question before the midterm elections in November.

The Congressional Budget Office this week reported that the U.S. this year could run an annual deficit nearly matching last year's record $1.4-trillion shortfall. The estimate: $1.35 trillion.

To secure the votes of moderate Democrats, President Obama has promised to appoint, by executive power, a task force to devise a plan for dealing with the spiraling debt. And to corral the support of moderate "Blue Dog" Democrats in a House vote next week, the measure includes tough new "pay-as-you-go" budget rules to make it harder to run up the deficit with new tax cuts or federal benefit programs.

Republican administrations from the past 25-30 years created 75% of our debt.

If the Wingnuts/Teabaggers wanted any credibilty on this issue they would have been holding Teabagger parties against BushCo while they were busy doubling our debt in only eight years.

Instead they sat on their hands and cheerleaded for them, and thus they are hypocrites and liars.

Obama didn't pass the stimulus bill when he first took office because he wanted to, he had to do it to save the economy from going into a full blown Bush depression. And the economy got that way in the first place from out of control Republican spending the past eight years, like giving handouts to the wealthy ( tax cuts to billionaires and selling out our gov't to the Military Industrial Complex) instead of working to help the middle class.

And by the way, that Stimulus bill contained the largest middle class tax cut in history.

HAHAHA!!!

Conservative/Republican hero ordered to live with his parents...

This headline says it all:

"Judge Orders 25-Year-Old O'Keefe To Live With His Parents"

Can anyone imagine a more perfect symbol of the conservative/Republican narrative malfunction?

House Democrats should craft a resolution condemning House Republicans for crafting a resolution last October honoring James O'Keefe III who, they said, was "owed a debt of gratitude by the people of the United States".

The 31 House Republican sponsors of the resolution which declared that accused felon James O'Keefe was "owed a debt of gratitude by the people of the United States" are all Republicans and, oddly, over a quarter of them serve districts in Texas: Todd Akin (R-MO2), Roscoe Bartlett (R-MD6), Joe Barton (R-TX6), Rob Bishop (R-UT1), Jo Bonner (R-AL1), John Boozman (R-AR3), Paul Broun (R-GA10), Henry Brown (R-SC1), John Campbell (R-CA48), John Carter (R-TX31), Howard Coble (R-NC6), Tom Cole (R-OK4), Michael Conaway (R-TX11), John Culberson (R-TX7), Mary Fallin (R-OK5), Trent Franks (R-AZ2), Louis Gohmert (R-TX1), Kay Granger (R-TX12), Ralph Hall (R-TX4), Jim Jordan (R-OH4), Steve King (R-IA5), John Kline (R-MN2), Doug Lamborn (R-CO5), Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO9), Daniel Lungren (R-CA3), Kenny Marchant (R-TX24), Joseph Pitts (R-PA16), Bill Posey (R-FL15), Phil Roe (R-TN1), John Shadegg (R-AZ3), and of course Mean Jean Schmidt (R-OH2).

Obama's appointing a "task force" to deal with the debt--75% of which has happened since the Democrats took over Congress.
You can't get more decisive than that!

The koolaid is strong today...

When has your messiah EVER practiced any sort of fiscal restraint?
Some History for you...
Senator(s) Obama, Biden and Clinton along with the DEM congress passed the 2009 budget ( $3.1 Trillion- $400B Deficit)-in Early 2008 with only two Republican voting for the bill.. when the final version had completed conference NO republicans ( Except Bush of course) voted for the budget and its deficits... ( this was well before anyone was aware of the looming financial meltdown).

Obama, Biden, and Clinton all voted in favor of the $700 billion TARP program- if Professor Silvertongue was so deficit adverse- why didn;t he vote against this?? - 25 senators had the backbone to do this...??

Obama could have vetoed the $ 787 stimulus or the $400B in additional spending in Feb of 2009???

HEY LARRY. THAT'S UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE. OBUMBLE'S GOING TO TOPPLE ALL DEBT ***EVER**** BY ****ALL**** PRESIDENTS. TRY AGAIN, CUPCAKE.

Listen up all you lambs out there that are happily following NObama into total bankruptcy. This additional raise to our national debt is going to be the final blow to his presidency. What has just been railroaded through the Congress is exactly why so many people are ticked off at this administration. They knew that if Brown were seated they never would have been able to ram home this increase in the budget. So much for bipartisanship.

REPUBLICANS WERE VOTED INTO THE MINORITY FOR A VERY GOOD REASON - THEY SUCK.

"Pay-As-You-Go" Budgeting? I've heard this term before? Three years ago from Speaker Dimwit.

http://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/pressreleases?id=0122

Let's see how all those goodies BO promised get paid for under CBO static scoring.

Longview,

In the next 7 years, that 75% number will be below 50% within 7 years.

Hey-Ho-Way-To-Go-Obamo

Also, the higher deficits of the Bush administration came while Nancy and Harry and BO were running Congress.

Having a Hissy Fit,

Are you saying that a $15 per week tax cuts is the largest tax cut in American history?

Here is the link that shows Obama lied about that debt, and sorry all you loony Libs it is from the same office he said he got his numbers from the CBO. http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/assets/fy2010_new_era/Summary_Tables2.pdf

Pres. Obama stated that he inherited eight $8 trillion deficit over 10 years but the fact is there was projected at 3.1 trillion over 10 years that was due to the fact that the Bush tax cuts were set to expire this year (table 4 page 15). But Obama and the Democrats in Congress supported extending many of the thoughts where the Republicans supported extending all of the cuts. If all of the cuts were extended it would have added $2.9 trillion for a total over 10 years of $6 trillion. Still short of the lie Obama told! New numbers released by the CBO projected the debt will be at an $11.6 trillion in 2014 and $14.3 trillion in 2019. So who is really adding to the debt could it be team Obama and the Liberal Democrats.

Pres. Obama second lie was about foreign corporations giving money to campaign. The Supreme Court did not remove the law that forbids foreign corporations from donating.

Pres. Obama's third lie was about who controls the CBO. The leadership of the CBO is appointed by agreement by the leaders of the Senate and a House of Representatives. Last time I looked they were both liberal Democrats.

You loony liberals just keep eating up the propaganda. Why the majority of voters deal in fact.

Democrats have ruined this country with their socialist agenda. Problem is, most folks don't even notice how much socialism has crept up all around us. We're going to have to get busy if we want to "de-socialize" this once-great country of ours.

Start with public schools. What gives the government the right to take my tax dollars and use them to educate someone else's kids? If people who have kids want them educated, they can homeschool them or use their own money to pay for a private school. And people won't vote for us unless we keep them dumb, so I say let's keep it that way!

Then there's Medicare. Why is socialized medicine okay for people over 65? Ronald Reagan warned back in the early 1960s that passing Medicare would take away our freedoms, but unfortunately people did not mobilize to stop it. Now that Americans are finally waking up and joining the Tea Party movement, maybe we can finally make the Zombie Gipper proud and repeal Medicare.

We also need to get rid of all this socialist red tape that strangles the capitalist system. Liberals passed all kinds of rules saying businesses have to have all these safety protections for workers, they can't pay women less than men, they can't pollute the water or air, they can't sell "unsafe" products, and on and on and on. It's no wonder China's economy is going full steam while ours is sluggish: the Red Chinese of all people have figured out that businessmen need to be allowed to do what they do best: make profits, instead of having to worry about all these regulatory hassles. Sure, this might result in the occasional poisonous dog food, or lead in kids toys, but once a company gets a reputation for that sort of thing, you can bet people will buy a different brand for their surviving dog and/or child!

One more thing that really bugs me: last I checked, the Second Amendment gives us the right to bear arms, and doesn't say anything about "except on airplanes". So what gives these federal goons (the "TSA") the right to tell me I can't bring my gun on the plane? Maybe if we get a good conservative president in to replace Obama, he can appoint a Supreme Court that understands that my right to bear arms is absolute, regardless of what kind of transportation I use. If I want to start shooting up an airplane in mid flight, thanks to our Founding Fathers, that's my right as an American.

While there are certainly plenty of valid reasons to fear Big Government, it is often the beneficial aspects of what a powerful federal government can provide that sends the mainstream media’s cast of Fox super villains into a frenzy. Universal access to health care, social programs for distressed communities, rights to an education, environmental protection and even basic food and water standards have been discussed in somber tones by Glenn Beck as the stepping stones to a Socialist government hell bent on destroying the American Dream.

I watch in awe as Sean Hannity follows at least thirty mentions of the need for small government with the statement that we should not fetter our CIA and military with respect to battling terrorists. As the history of all Big Governments has illustrated in the starkest of terms, nothing feeds the power of the State more than perpetual war. Sean Hannity has absolute trust in the growing Big Government he fears when said government is blowing up towns via remote control airplanes, killing scores of innocents on nothing more than a hunch that a terrorist might have prayed in the local mosque. Sean Hannity sees no reason to mess about with such Pollyanna crap as trials or adherence to the Geneva Convention when fighting this amorphous war that was never formally declared.

The same government that is completely untrustworthy on Health Care is miraculously trustworthy on imprisoning those who mean to do us harm. Simply requesting a modicum of transparency on issues relating to the incarceration and murder of potential enemies of the State is tantamount to being weak on defense or even a traitor. Lucky for us, our government never arrests the wrong man or woman. If the government somehow kills a few thousand innocents along the way, that’s just the cost of freedom, the cost of making Big Government even bigger.

Bill O’Reilly gets flustered when the idea that we should not torture people comes up. He sighs heavily when there is a suggestion that there should be proof before we execute someone. He trusts our government unequivocally in such matters. It is only the big governance of Reid and Pelosi that he questions. There is more of a possibility that our government, which has listened in on our cell phone calls and will soon be looking at most of us naked before we board an airplane, would incarcerate and murder us for our opinions rather than carrying out the supposed Death Panels of the monstrous Health Care plans. While I am not a proponent of the crap insurance company giveaways of Harry Reid or the slightly less bullshitty but still very crappy plan of Nancy Pelosi, at least they are devoting some energy into the concept that Big Government can accomplish more than murder.

Sarah Palin laughs at the suggestion of any sort of deliberation before we escalate our various wars. She trusts our lightning-fast precision government to make the decisions of life and death, your way, right away.

The right-wingers, who supported the repeal of McCain-Feingold, believe that corporations must be guaranteed the rights of the individual, as long as they are not Gay Corporations. Nothing threatens the sanctity of marriage more than a dreaded Gay Corporate Merger or George Soros with his hand on John McCain’s crotch.

Republicans/Tea Baggers can sleep well knowing that Scott Brown also has absolute trust in our Big Government when it comes to imprisonment, torture and murder. Scott Brown’s drunken rambling victory speech last week drew big applause when he spoke of the fact that there is simply no need to protect the rights of terrorists. Again, the problem here is, as patently obvious as it should be, is that without giving suspects any rights, there is no mechanism to assess if they are guilty or innocent. This undermines all of our rights.

To my friends in the Republican loving Corporate media, I am all for reducing the size of government, right after they arrest the lot of you on suspicion of being terrorists. Isn’t "Hannity" the Arabic word for sewer waste?

Could someone explain how the FORMER senator from Massachusetts got to vote on this bill? His term ended when Brown was elected.

FROM LA TIMES . . . 81% THINK "BUDGET FREEZE" IS BULL.

The new Rasmussen Reports poll actually shows that 9% -- nine out of every 100 Americans -- think the freeze will do a lot about the federal deficit that has this many 0's -- 0,000,000,000,000.

To put it another way, 81 out of every 100 Americans are already convinced that the president's three-year plan is a phony phreeze that won't do much of anything at all about the deficit.

They're not against a freeze. It sounds swell. Like a budget-conscious family banning restaurant dinners except on weekends. In fact, 57% of poll respondents would like to see a government spending reduction. They just don't see such a tiny one as mattering much, despite the administration's orchestrated news leaks in advance and the three whole paragraphs the president devoted to it.

HEY K, NICE TRY. YOUR GRAPH IS FROM 2006. CHECK THE CALENDAR IT'S 2010. HERE'S WHAT THE CBO SAYS NOW, AND WHAT I SAID IS STILL COMPLETELY TRUE:

"OBUMBLE'S GOING TO TOPPLE ALL DEBT ***EVER**** BY ****ALL**** PRESIDENTS."

Enough of the “Task Force” for this. Why can’t Obama fix it himself? It’s simple, spend less then what we take in. This is like issuing credit card after credit card for a family in debt all ready. Cut the military by 25% and we can get this under control. Lets stop point fingers all ready and make tough decisions.

The Senate authorized another two trillion in Federal Debt completely along party lines. Republicans are suddenly fiscal conservatives after years of trillion dollar shortfalls under Bush but that was okay since it was done off the books. A crime family always keeps two sets of books.

New unemployment claims dropped back from last week but were still higher than they have been for some weeks. In a normal times claims this high would generate screaming headlines but no real notice is paid anymore even though there has been a jobs creation shortfall for years and numbers are grinding down the middleclass. Bucolic Dubuque Iowa that still has an official unemployment rate that would be considered low even in good times is reporting that the number of homeless school children has doubled since last year.

President Obama mentioned in his State of the Union speech that he reads heartbreaking letters from children who are losing their family home and their parents don’t have jobs anymore. Between his Ivy League college experience and Ivy League law school he worked as a community organizer for Catholic Charities running a program for steel workers who had been out-sourced. Obama should understand what the problem is and realize that nothing he has proposed will fix any of it.

Obama is supposed to be a chess player but the major pieces on the board all belong to the other side and we’re just a bunch hapless pawns and the Supreme Court has just put us in check.

Hey Bobbie Mobbie, here is some up-to-date data for you:

[quote]
As for the deficit's cause, the single most important factor is the legacy of President George W. Bush's legislative agenda. Overall, changes in federal law during the Bush administration are responsible for 40 percent of the short-term fiscal problem. For example, we estimate that the tax cuts passed during the Bush presidency are reducing government revenue collections by $231 billion in 2009. Also, because of the additions to the federal debt due to Bush administration policies, the government will be paying $218 billion more in interest payments in 2009.

Had President Bush not cut taxes while simultaneously prosecuting two foreign wars and adopting other programs without paying for them, the current deficit would be only 4.7 percent of gross domestic product this year, instead of the eye-catching 11.2 percent—despite the weak economy and the costly efforts taken to restore it. In 2010, the deficit would be 3.2 percent instead of 9.6 percent.

The weak economy also plays a major role in the deficit picture. The failure of Bush economic policies—fiscal irresponsibility, regulatory indifference, fueling of an asset and credit bubble, a failure to focus on jobs and incomes, and inaction as the economy started slipping—contributed mightily to the nation's current economic situation. When the economy contracts, tax revenues decline and outlays increase for programs designed to keep people from falling deep into poverty (with the tax impact much larger than the spending impact). All told, the weak economy is responsible for 20 percent of the fiscal problems we face in 2009 and 2010.
