The White House faces questions today, on the anniversary of President Barack Obama's inauguration, about the Senate election in Massachusetts that cost the president's party its short-lived super-majority control of the Senate.
"There's an unbecoming habit in this town of trying to defray a responsibility, point in other directions,'' the White House's David Axelrod said today, with a ribbing for Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, joining him on MSNBC's new The Daily Rundown. "So let me say it was Robert's fault and I'm bitter about it.''
Joking aside, Axelrod said: "You know, I'll let others assess responsibility. I think the main thing that we saw in Massachusetts was the same sense of concern on the part of middle class folks about the economic situation, about their wages being stagnant, about jobs being lost, about their economic security that's been in jeopardy.
"And this is something that predated the big recession that we're going through,'' the president's chief political advisor said. "And that's something that we have to pay a great deal of attention to. It is the focus of this president's attention at all times. And we have to convey that.''
How can the White House interpret the Massachusetts defeat as anything other than a "total rejection'' of the president's health-care reform, he was asked - in light of Brown campaigning as the 41st vote against the bill.
"I think that there were a lot of elements to the message yesterday. Health care was part of it,'' Axelrod said. "I would note that Sen. Brown didn't run one ad on health care in the entire campaign. I'm sure you know that.
"And he supported a health care reform similar to the one that the president was and is committed to in Massachusetts, and said during the campaign that he wouldn't repeal it,'' he said.
"I mean, there are messages here,'' he said. "We hear those messages, but there is a tendency in this town -- not that you guys would do it -- but to overblow things, even beyond their importance. And I don't think it's about that one particular issue. I think there's a general sense of discontent about the economy and there's a general sense of discontent about this town. That's why we were elected. We are committed to doing something about it.''
The president's men were asked about the president's first year, and why more hasn't been accomplished.
"For a lot of reasons,'' Gibbs said. "The first of which is change takes a long time to happen, certainly in this town. And it takes even longer for the American people to feel that. The president didn't have a first-year agenda, he has a first-term agenda. So while today marks the end of the first year and the beginning of the second, it's not even really a hallmark holiday.
"I would say this too, building off of what David said, there are things that the president has accomplished, whether it's a credit card bill of rights, whether it's a recovery plan that's led to the first quarter of economic growth in more than a year, that same sort of anger and frustration that the President saw when he traveled in Iowa, and throughout this country for more than two years is still very pervasive today,'' Gibb said.
"I think that's what we saw most of all coming out of Massachusetts, is there's a tremendous amount of anger and frustration about where people are economically and whether this town is fighting for their economic well-being or fighting for the special interests well-being,'' Gibbs said. "I think that's what's ultimately going to define more about the coming political battles and the upcoming election.
"Health care is an aspect of it, but this is far broader than that. There's an anger and a real frustration. People's jobs are being shipped overseas. As David said, they're working harder, they're working longer, they're more productive, yet their wages are going down. That leads to the type of isolation and economic frustration that we felt for quite some time.''

"The first of which is change takes a long time to happen, certainly in this town."
Umm Robert, change does not take very long in an election year. You are going to lose the house & the senate majorities in 11 months. The change better kick in soon or the next change will be you working for MSNBC in 2012 with a very small viewership.

The polls show that even in Leftwing Taxachusetts, voters by a 51-47% majority oppose ObamaCare.
And if ObamaCare can't win in Taxachusetts, where can it?

Gibby say: "...they're working harder, they're working longer, they're more productive, yet their wages are going down. That leads to the type of isolation and economic frustration that we felt for quite some time.''
If this is true, you Dems will have to cut spending and taxes
so the workers can keep more of their own pay, now won't you.

If the "message is heard," why did Axelrod tell Reuters this morning that Obama intends to "stick with his policy agenda?" Obama and Democrats are going to continue flipping-off Americans as they try waterboarding their wildly unpopular socialist schemes down our throats. If they persist, there is going to be a full-blown revolution in this country against Democrats everywhere. We WILL take back this nation from the socialist Democrats. Obama is living proof that liberlism and nanny statism are mental illnesses that can't be controlled.

Once again, we see that the "minority" community sat out the election and the subsequent results -- unlike the Fall of last year. Before "conservatives" read too much into this election, they better be mindful of the fact that "minorities" will soon be "majority" in the electoral process and Hispanics in Illinois, New York, Florida and the Southwest including Arizona and California have shown that they ARE becoming energized and willing to flex their collective electoral muscle . . . next up for Republicans -- Immigration reform. Will this tear conservatives from the likes of John McCain?

Massachusetts has fired the Shot Heard Around the Country except maybe by the Democrats in Washington. Only time will tell if the Obama White House really heard the message from Liberal and Heavily Democratic Massachusetts last night. They seem to have been blind to similar messages from New Jersey and Virginia. So far Obama and his arrogant staff and supporters have no idea that the country is mad that we are heading to far to the Left. But Obama and the Democrats do have time to change course and move toward the center and rectify the problems. If they don't the Democrats will suffer big time losses in September.

Hey kg123 -- the markets rallied big time yesterday in anticipation of the Brown win. If you know anything about the markets, you know they are anticipatory. Pros buy on expectation and anticipation and SELL on the news. The markets are thrilled Obama's anti-capitalist dreams are dwindling. Wait and watch.

To poster The Future: The best thing Hispanics and other minorities can do for themselves and their communities is recognize that the entitlement policies of the Democratic party are destructive and defeating. Everyone's life -- whether Hispanic, White, African American or Asian -- is bigger and brighter when one rejects and rises above the destructive Democratic messages of defeat and poverty that are designed to get votes and keep them captive to the party. You insult the intelligence of the minority community when you assume they will continue supporting a party which seeks to hold them back and keep them down. It comes down to whether you believe in the power of the individual or the power of big government. I believe in the power of the individual, whether white, black, brown or purple. Life is so much bigger than the Democratic Party.

The message that's loud and clear in this story is that the American public has near zero confidence in the current crop of electees. This starts with the WH, traveling through the Senate and House. If the POTUS wants a good shot at a second term, he'd better get on his horse and start hog-tying Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the Democratic Machine. The approval ratings of the Senate and House are at all time lows, and the ineffectiveness of the electorate at these levels is dragging down the WH.
If the POTUS is going to leave his mark (other than the 1st African American to win), he better start figuring out a way to distance himself from the dead weight in the House and Senate. 2010 is here and the citizens of the US are fed up with the garbage in Washington. You can only blame someone else for the current mess for so long, but as Commander in Chief, the POTUS still has a responsibility to clean it up. So far, the old "mess" appears to be ignored and other ones are being created.
He ran on a campaign of change, and so far all we've seen is a change in the players. The rules haven't changed one bit and we're still the ones getting the shaft.

No, I do not think the White house heard us. We do not want you spending the money of many generations to come on stimulus programs that do not work. We do not want your health care bill. We do not want your arrogance.
Way to go MA! I hope the rest of the country follows your lead.

We shall see how well they heard the message. I hope they are smart enough to forgo their arrogance and finally start listening to the people and working on their failed promises. If not it will a short time until November and then 2012 when a true housecleaning will take place.

Gibbs is closer to he mark -- Axelrod is still out in left field.`Agree that he is a good campaign manager, but a lousy political advisor. The writing has been all over the wall for months, but Axelrod has to come down to the streets to see it.

The Modern Liberals will not change course. They will not change course because the hopelessness and despair that their policies create and foster (like they have in the inner cities under Democratic/Liberal control for over 50 years) are just an acceptable side effect to them.
People see that things are worse and the future looks bleak under these people, but these Modern Liberals only care about making things "equal", not better. The problem for us is most people don't realize how bad their version of "equal" is.

Sorry, that tripe is no longer acceptable to the American public. These yokal's in the White House think they are still in Chicago, with the Machine firmly behind them.
Well, it is a solid fact that the Machine in Ma. was not up to the job even though Ma. has been a three to one D over R since Jesus broke bread on Teddy's Cape Cod patio (minus the wind turbines thank you)
The Independant's of this Nation who voted for Obama in 2008 are not happy and this is the response from the Obama flunkies?
I watched the news programs last night that actually covered this special election and the voters spoke loud and clear! This was a vote against the Obama White House and the far left liberal Democrats controlling Congress.
Well, get used to it folks! America is waking up from the "chill down Olbermans legs" and seeing this administration as they really are. Hiding in plain sight might work for terrorists but not in the functions of US Government.
The back room deals with unions and special interest groups, hidden agenda's, total lack of transparency (as was promised) and the fact that the citizens of Ma. already face budget deficits based on the "universal" health care passed a few years ago, lead them to the NO OBAMA ballot.

"People's jobs are being shipped overseas."
Ah, getting warmer. I'd like to see a tax on corporations who continue to fire Americans and replace them with people in India. Walk through a large corporation today and see the huge population of Indian contractors. This has been going on for years. It has to stop. We are throwing American out on the street while pumping money into the Indian economy.
Remember the slogan "buy American"? Tax the exportation of jobs to encourage American corporations to "hire American".

Happy Anniversary, Barack NICHOLAE CARPATHIA Obama! 236 Years after the Boston Tea Party, the state of MA. has finally resurfaced again and struck a major blow against Taxation Without Representation. How appropriate that this act took place in MA. When added to what has happened in VA. and NJ, the politicians of this country better take notice. For those who are mocking today's Tea Party Groups, mock no more or do so at your peril. Oh by the way, upon hearing the news, Ted Kennedy fell off the wagon. After 147 days of being sober, Teddy got drunk tonite. Fortunately, there are no cars or water in hell, so he could not kill anyone.

Obama has declared war on the American people. This is war he will ultimately lose as we elminiate his foot soldiers one by one until 2012, when we pry the keys to the country out of his narcissistic hands in favor of someone who actually respects Americans and truly wants to see our great nation succeed.

Why in the world does anyone think that the Republicans would do any better?? Unighten your tie, turn of Fox News and rejoin the reality. The Repubs propose nothing and stymie the efforts of someone who does try.
Lest we all forget, Obama inherited a ship full of holes and he's been trying to plug them ever since he got there...not to mention the ship took a torpedo (the market crash) and yet it is still floating thanks to Obama and the Dems.
Move forward with the Health Plan and amend later as needed. Why should a 25 year old have any less opportunity to have health care than a 67 year old??

Let's not be fooled by the White House, they have not learned a thing from the Massachusetts election results. Pelosi and Reed both have some serious mental problems. They display them every day.
Posted by: Chuck | January 20, 2010 2:48 PM
Don't be misled or giddy about the election results from MA yesterday. The current leadership of the Democrat Party and those in power in the White House and on Capitol Hill are a prime reason why so many state legislatures and governerships are turning red.. And, my party went south after the national conventions of '68 and '72. Bringing them back to the center where the vast majority of the electorate is won't happen over night. And, you won't get much help from the media. The network honchos, print publishers and TV and radio GM's all came out of the '60's and '70's ilk themselves.
Also remember, Republicans had control of the White House and Congress for several years during the 2000's -- and squandered it all. The heat is on the winners as much - maybe more - than the losers this time around.

Alexrod is lousy at governance. Obama was aloof on Christmas and for a week afterwards. Taking your tie off isn't a strong signal of concern for the situation.

I love the woefully ignorant "voters rejected socialism!" posts here. Yes, the health care bill doesn't poll well. The thing the right-wingers here fail to mention is a good portion of those asked say they oppose it because it doesn't go far enough. People aren't rejecting Obama's agenda, they're rejecting his failed centrist stance.

So the 20% of dems that voted for Brown must have considered him left of cokely? The 70% of indies that went for Brown thought he would take HC even further? Are you advising the white house or reading their talking points?
By all means keep believing that a 30 point shift towards Brown was because the libs in MA weren't liberal enough. See how that plays out in OH, IN or any state that will be in contention this fall. Keep pushing those back room deals and special interest payoffs, apparently there weren't enough of them to really satisfy liberals.

It was simply another "late in coming" Revolution & Tea Party circa 2010 in Massachusetts yesterday. Paul Revere was aptly played by Scott Brown. Democrats & Independents finally discovered that Obama and "his pirates" had hijacked their HMS Democrat Party and transformed it into their own private ship called the HMS Socialist State. Massachusetts voters decided to mutiny and take their ship back. The Democrat Party is not the same Democrat Party of JFK and our parents. An "alien" life form has infiltrated it and though it is still called by the same name, it has been transformed by socialist Barack Obama to mold into what he feels the Democrat Party should have always been in the beginning. And on the Seventh Day, Barack rested.

Obama has played a shell game with us. During his campaign he trotted out progressive and competent economists from the Uof C. Then he took office and conscripted Wall Street hacks like Geitner who probably cashed his Citi bonus check the day he got sworn in as Treasury Secretary.
The message is: Some of us think you are weak, President Obama, some of us think you are lazy, and the rest of us think you are unprincipled.

By the way, Starbucks reported unbelievable profits....this from a company that lives off people letting go of disposable income and the market recognizes their positive report and still drops off the table. House starts are down but permits are up, pointing to a future growth in the constuction industry, another sure positive sign the market usually applauds with an uptick, yet the market falls. Yes, I do believe I was showing off some intelligence. Too bad you can't see the train coming straight for you. I guess you republicans can't get out of your own way to do something positive from our financial industry or our country's economic recovery. Bury your heads in the sand, blame others and push another tax cut for the upper one percenters. Hopeless!
