Photo of the "Miss me Yet?'' billboard by Bob Collins / Minnesota Public Radio
by Mark Silva and updated again at 4 pm EST
The billboard sitting along I-35 near Wyoming, Minn., displaying a photo of former president George W. Bush and this question: "Miss Me Yet?" apparently is a sign in search of an author. Though a Minnesotan friend is getting near the bottom of the billboard mystery.
At National Public Radio, they reported that Minnesota Public Radio reported that it's the real McCoy: They had seen this sign. (See the photo here from MPR.)
But "there's no readily apparent claim of ownership on the billboard,'' NPR's The Two Way reported, and the good folks in Minnesota were looking into that.
Minnesota Public Radio's Bob Collins checked in with the mayor of Wyoming, Sheldon Anderson, who replied by email: "Wish I could take credit for it. Calls every day asking if it was me. If you find out let me know.''
And now Collins has heard from Mary Teske, general manager of Schubert & Hoey Outdoor Advertising, who reports that "The Bush Miss Me Yet? billboard was paid for by a group of small business owners who feel like Washington is against them. They wish to remain anonymous. They thought it was a fun way of getting out their message."
Apparently, it's been a slow week in Lake Wobegone.
But the question looms: Miss him yet?
(with special thanks to Bob Collins of MPR for his photography and generosity.)

Comments
Considering he got the country into its current fiscal and economic mess, no, I don't think the country misses him yet. Heck, most Americans still (rightfully) blame him, not Obama, for the economy, deficit, etc.

OH, YES WE DO!!!
Your low 5.3% unemployment average for 8 years and tax cuts that got the economy going after B.J. Clinton's recession and 9/11.
Oh Yes...we miss you President Bush.

While America Slept
*
President Barack Obama’s reply in April to a question from a Financial Times reporter about whether he believed in American exceptionalism. He said: “I believe in American exceptionalism, just as I suspect that the Brits believe in British exceptionalism and the Greeks believe in Greek exceptionalism.”
This is reminiscent of what the Dodo says in Alice in Wonderland: “Everyone has won and all must have prizes.” Yet that is simply not how international relations work. Greeks might indeed believe in their own exceptionalism, as might Belgians, Thais, or Finns for that matter, but they are not truly exceptional in the light of global current affairs. The West once again looks to America for leadership in a risky world, as we so often have in the past.

I'm no fan of Bush, but compared to this incopetent fool we elected a year ago, I MISS BUSH! Typical liberals, trying to find out who put up the billboard so they can assail and destroy, what else is new. They can't handle anyone who disagrees with their party or President.

Of course he's missed, and the longer the current idiot in chief is in office, the more he'll be missed.
I'd rather have someone I trust.
obama cannot be trusted, he lies incessantly and I wouldn't let him run a lemonade stand.
Bush wasn't great, obama is a complete joke. Although it's fun watching his supporters come to the realization of what they voted for. Most are embarrassed - similiar to the people who get caught by stupid scams. Others are still in denial, defending what they know are idiotic, incompetent moves.
I also find it funny that these mindless, uninformed people still try to blame President Bush for everything, yet when it's their boy - it's always someone else's fault.

Ever think the question could be "sarcastic"? We don't know the ownership yet. Maybe with the 8 years of his disastrous administration that caused the financial meltdown, this is someone glad he's gone.
It could even just be a prankster, asking it rhetorically.

It is way too early to know how history will rate Bush the Younger. Bush had his 8 years in office and it is now time to move on. Obama is in office in some very trying economic times. Most Americans, including Democrats, Republicans, Independents and even Libertarians (that;'s right Don Fitz) hope President Obama makes the right decisions and led the country through these bad economic times. But just like trying to rate the Bush presidency only time will tell how successful Obama will be.

Yes, this economic mess is Bush's fault - just like the previous economic mess was Clinton's (but we can blame Bush for that too). The problem of course is that Obama has promised job creation - which there is none, unless of course you work for the government. These upcoming tax increases will certainly fix the problem though. The first thing I do when I have less money is spend more.
Posted by: bridget | February 9, 2010 12:41 PM
No matter what's happening right now, the answer is an unequivocal "no." While it may be an indictment of "Obama's performance," we can't forget what/who got us here to begin with (although that's a debatable topic, too...Today's joke: "How many presidents does it take to screw up the US economy?")
Also, "hell no" is 2 words. Just an FYI.

Not "when" but "why" did the banks fail - because of the credit meltdown that was created under Clinton. As for short term memory loss, you must have it too, because you seem to forget that the democrats, like Nancy Pelosi and Hilary Clinton, were also adamant about Iraq having WMDs. Everyone who wants to blame the country's woes on Bush (or Obama, for that matter) are either naive or inept. The problem isn't Republican or Democrat, it's Bureaucrat! And the longer the members of the House and Senate can rot away in congress, the worse things will get. We need reform and we need it now - Term Limits, and a constitutional amendment to force politicians to follow the same laws we do.

Absolutely. I don't agree with everything Bush did by long shot. He got us into a war we didn't belong in. I totally agree with that. BUT, the economy...was world wide and was NOT his doing. The dems and Barney Frank with Fannie Mae had a hell of a lot to do with it.
But, one HUGE difference...Bush loved and was proud of the country. He had no socialist agenda. Whereas Barry is simply a puppet controlled by the marrionettes of his cabinet...his czars...the unions...etc. In other words, he has no back bone. No spine. I wonder when he was young if anyone instilled in him right and wrong. I WILL say this, however! He IS a good father figure for families..

There's a serious disconnect going on here... Of course, it's backwater Minnesota we're talking about, so no surprises, eh?

I'm not sure people should be fooled (once again!) into thinking "W" got us into this economic mess.
I believe that WE did it to ourselves: artificially pumping up the values of our homes, taking way too much equity from those homes, lenders giving money away with no regard to process or regulation. Come on Americans, time to step up and take responsibility. George W Bush didn't force anyone to take out a second or third mortgage on their homes. Nor did he ask Fannie and Freddie to lower their standards. We took advantage of a short lived "good thing" and got screwed.
Now it's time to get back in the game and get ourselves out of this mess. And without Barry's help. America was built on the entrepreneurship mentality. Government growth and spending will only dig us deeper.
Do I miss him? Yes, but not the spending. Thanks for keeping us safe "W"!

One term, I predict.

Obama has been a disappointment so far, but a year isn't enough time to pass final judgment, especially for a President who inherited a plundered economy, two wars, an obstructionist minority in congress, and (as this blog attests) a nation more politically divided than it has been in its history.

Bush Jr spent eight years proving beyond a shadow of doubt that the Republican governing philosophy doesn't work.
- We are the party of small government
Under Bush Jr, discretionary spending increased from $640 billion to $1.040 trillion dollars. Also remember that Bush had a Republican controlled congress for 6 of those years. However, Paulson will send a package to Congress which totals $800 billion. The Treasury will create a new agency to buy bad debt (which the WSJ's Marketbeat blog has called the Treasury Garbage Machine). In short, when the Republicans control all branches of government they spend like drunken sailors.
- We Support Free Markets
The SEC banned short-selling in financial shares:
"The Securities and Exchange Commission has announced a ban on short-selling financial stocks over the next two weeks. Short-selling is essentially betting that a stock's price will go down. The SEC hopes the ban will reduce downward pressure on the market, but some think it will backfire. Wall Streeter Barry Ritholtz tells Madeleine Brand that the SEC action reverses 1,000 years of theory about how free markets should work."
In short, markets are supported when they are going up. But when they are going down, we're going to do everything we can to prevent them from going down.
- We Are the Party of Fiscal Responsibility.
No they aren't. No Republican president has ever balanced a budget. While Republicans have argued that Reagan had to contend with Democrats, Bush II did not for 6 years. Under this scenario where the Republicans controlled all branches of government they never even came close to balancing a budget.
- We are the Party of Personal Responsibility
No you're not. When companies make really stupid decisions the Federal government bails them out. Just ask any shareholder of AIG. Or any taxpayer who will now help to finance the latest government bail-out.
Simply put, they demonstrated a key point: when the going gets tough, the Republicans become socialists:
If you are a fan of irony, consider this: The conservative movement has utterly hated FDR, and his New Deal programs like Medicaid, Social Security, FDIC, Fannie Mae (1938), and the SEC for nearly 80 years. And for the past 8 years, a conservative was in the White House, with a very conservative agenda. For something like 16 of the past 18 years, the conservative dominated GOP has controlled Congress. Those are the facts.
We now see that the grand experiment of deregulation has ended, and ended badly. The deregulation movement is now an historical footnote, just another interest group, and once in power they turned into socialists. Indeed, judging by the actions of the conservatives in power, and not the empty rhetoric that comes out of think tanks, the conservative movement has effectively turned the United States into a massive Socialist state, an appendage of Communist Russia, China and Venezuela.
Whenever a Republican talking head says they are for any of the above mentioned things they should be questioned to explain how that statement (I'm for free markets) jibes with banning short selling of an entire sector of the market. Whenever a Republican says he is for smaller government, have him explain the nearly doubling of discretionary spending when the Republicans controlled all branches of government.
Simply put, the Bush years demonstrated how hollow many of the Republican values are. They sound great on paper, but aren't put into practice when that result might cause financial harm to another Republican.

Paulo & Bridget, that was exactly what Bush did. He cut taxes because we had a suprlus. Sound fine by itself, but then he spent more. I'm OK with Afghanistan, but that wasn't enough for Bush. He created another war in Iraq.
He was the first president in history to have a war and REDUCE taxes. My favorite is his attempt at a dig to Democrats with the hypocritical "kids spending on their parents credit card" quip. He who smelt it , dealt it.
And by the way, the Medicare part D Rx benefit with the 10's of billions price tag is on Bushes tab as well.
Would anyone care to debate fiscal responsibility under Bushes reign?

Everybody needs to be a part of the solution- I don't need anyone pointing out the obvious- I need a job and a right-side up economy. Stop wishing.

Mary, get YOUR facts straight. Clinton's people hid all kinds of things like their massive amount of deficit spending that didn't kick in until he was out of office. There was never a surplus and there hasn't been one since Kennedy started deficit spending.

You get your own facts straight. Newt Gingrich left a surplus, over Clinton's objections, by the way. It was THOSE surplusses that Bush spent like water.
But that leads to the question: if Bush spent money like water, what is Obama spending it like? What's waterier than water?

C'mon, liberal or conservative, the board was created by someone with a terrific sense of humor. Let's give credit where it's due. Plus, I do miss George. When I saw him with Clinton for the Haiti message, and he had that vacuous, "Would-someone-please-tell-me-what-to-do-or-say" look on his face, it brought back fond memories of disbelief that this dolt was actually in the White House.
Mr. Obama has been in office, what, 13 months? Geez, give the guy a chance. Goofy was in office 96 months and what did he accomplish besides some African hunger initiatives. The media, as usual, is contributing to the growing popular opinion that Obama's already a failure, because, well, that's what he media does best, which is stir the pot to get people interested to watch, or read, whatever. They helped get him elected by canonizing him, and now they're first to crucify. But frankly, it's all to be expected when the average voter can't make decisions by themselves, but rather needs someone to tell them how to think.
Welcome to America. "give us your poor, your tired, and especially your stupid..."

Although people might be angry, no one is accusing whomever erected this billboard of being unpatriotic or even of "aiding and abetting the enemy" even though we are still at war. In the Obama administration, people are able to criticize the President and even the way he conducts war without having their patriotism questioned. Thank goodness! My country is back!

The people responsible for the billboard are a group of local small business owners who are fed up with Obama's socialist approach to government. Tell me are you going to go into a bank as a small business owner and ask for a loan to make payroll? A 99.9% of the time if you try that you will be laughed out of the bank. Small businesses are worried about making payroll right now and holding onto their customer base and at the same time trying to expand it. Right now we have a White House with the lowest percentage of people who have ever owned a business or ran a company. It stands at 8% which is a pitiful amount considering what they are doing and how badly they are fouling up.

I find it amusing... no sad, that there are people who can simultaneously;
* give Obama a pass on accomplishing anything because of an 'obstructionist minority'.
* claim Bush is solely responsible for almost everything that has happened since about 1995.
* insist that Obama is soooo much smarter than Bush.
You can't have it all, folks. If Obama is what you say he is, why can't he get anything done? You may not like Bush... I don't either. But if you believe he single-handedly started a war in the Middle East, you've got to admit he's a hell of lot more competent than the current occupant, who doesn't appear able to start his own car.
Either Bush is a lot smarter than you think, or Obama is a lot dumber, or both. 'Cause the bottom line is that one pulled off his grand plans, and the other, not so much.

Comment boards like these make me feel as if there truly is no hope for this country. Any politician that is hoping to reach a sucessful compromise across party lines must be kidding themselves.
Maybe we should continue spewing the "red" versus "blue" hate until we draw that line back across our country and tell people to choose. Maybe we should focus on the petty and immature while completely ignoring the underlying problems which are making our country unstable.
Seriously, it's time for all of us to stuck it up and act like adults - or, if that's not possible, stick your head in the sand so we aren't bothered by this constant stream of garbage flowing out of everyone's mouths.

Clinton left a recession - the economy was tanking during Q4 2000. The whole "dot.com" thing happened then and q1, Q2 2001. 9/11 caused a dip, following by "patriotic spending" that brought hte economy back up.
Obama is going to let the Bush tax cuts expire this year. It has been proven over and over that tax cuts increase tax revenue, yet Obama has to prove the corrollary for himself.

An attack on a military base is not a terrorist attack - it's called war. A war that Bush got us into. An attempted terrorist attack is a failed attack. Imagine if 9/11 was attempted, but failed, under Bush. No, the largest attack on our country happened under the president under whom you claim to feel safer.

Clinton did NOT leave us with a "surplus in the treasury". We had some very good years because of Y2K spending and, especially the internet dot-com boom.
Don't forget that the economy tanked before Clinton got out. No matter who was in office (Bush or Gore), the recession would have happened.
It's just a lie that Bush drove down the economy as Bush brought it after the dot-com bust and 9/11.
The idiot liberals wanted to raise taxes! That would have slowed DOWN any recovery.

Group of Small Businessmen Behind Mysterious Bush Billboard
*
The Internet is abuzz today with people wondering about the giant George W. Bush billboard hovering over I-35 near Wyoming, Minn. The billboard features a smiling picture of the former prez with the caption "Miss Me Yet?"
From where did this strange advertisement spring, and what is its intended purpose?
Asylum spoke to Mary Teske from Schubert & Hoey Outdoor Advertising, the agency behind the billboard, and they told us that the sign was rented by a group of small businessmen from the twin cities area, who pooled their money to make the political statement.
Why? The businessmen say they invested in the billboard because they "thought Washington was against them." The billboard has been up for a month and drivers can look forward to enjoying the billboard for at least another month that is already paid up.
The billboard had spurred discussion this week, with some convinced it was a PhotoShop hoax, but its existence was verified by reporter Bob Collins at Minnesota Public Radio, who has been trying to track down the people behind it ever since.
The renters wish to remain anonymous for now, but they say they have been "overwhelmed by the response" and are considering renting more billboards.

I don't know what Rethugs have been smoking. Everything (but funding AIDS research/support in Africa) on Bush's watch back fired. Two tax cuts, two wars, and a public healthcare expansion into senior pharmacy that were all unfunded have come back and bitten us in the b-hind. The party of less government and less spending has been anything but. I don't blame or give credit to Clinton for the internet boom/bust, just as I don't hold Bush/Clinton completely responsible for the Wall St./housing bust. It comes down to a level of greed and corruption that is driven in our capatilistic model. A necessary evil. There is always going to be people (Wall St., oil companies, coal companies, bankers, etc.) who look to exploit profits damn the risks and the people who get hurt. All you need to do is follow the money. George Bush and his exclusion/axis of evil politics are not missed.

Bush ruined this country from his weakness before, during and after 911 to the bad economy, stock market crash, bank failures, real estate crash and trashing the Constitution. Whoever paid for this sign should have their head examined, which is probably why they chose to remain anonymous.

It's interesting to read so many comments which call Obama the worst president in history, but offer no concrete validation for this opinion. TARP and the bank bailouts were carry overs from the Bush administration. I didn't like the economic stimulus plan either, but most economy experts agree it likely staved off a more serious recession / depression. And what about his attempts to reform health care. Yeah, that's a stupid idea. Why try to reform something that is clearly broken and that everyone agrees will eventually consume the federal budget. All the healthcare lobby money did a really good job of convincing the stupid people in America that the status quo is just fine and dandy, and that anyone who wants to change the system is a socialist.

I'm going to remember this billboard every time I think things are bad now. They can never be as bad as they were under Bush 43, easily the worst president in modern times.

Dear Matt -- your fellow dems got the country into the mess we are in -- Bush wasn't perfect but after dems took over congress in 2006 there was no stopping the destruction caused by the mortgage loan meltdown. People given mortgages of any size they wanted with no ability to pay back....congress threatening trouble for banks that would not go along with the free-mortgages-for-all program.
Quit blaming Bush -- anyone that does that today is laughed at in blogs like this.
Posted by: JimBob | February 9, 2010 6:08 PM
Although people might be angry, no one is accusing whomever erected this billboard of being unpatriotic or even of "aiding and abetting the enemy" even though we are still at war. In the Obama administration, people are able to criticize the President and even the way he conducts war without having their patriotism questioned. Thank goodness! My country is back!

JHM you are absolutely right for pointing this out. I hadn't seen it and, frankly, am disappointed and disgusted that anyone in the Obama administration would stoop to name-calling like this. The fact that we criticize the President makes America strong. I pray to God the Obama administration does not continjue to go down this road. Blaming its detractors for being unpatriotic and squelching criticism was probably the worst thing that the Bush administration did.
Posted by: PD Wadler | February 9, 2010 6:11 PM
Incredible! Bush and his administration are the reason why we are in this mess. Obama is trying to fix it (and it takes time, people) but the bitter Republicans oppose everything (unless it's their own idea). But people want to bring back the very thinking that now finds us in the midst of a major recession amongst other things? Gee, why does the rest of the world laugh at the U.S.?

There are so many STUPID people in this country. Did you honestly forget that Bush and boys got us into this horrible financial mess, into an unwinnable war-for-oil (that's KILLED so many people), and caused the world to not want to work with us on international problems? What - the dems are supposed to ride in on their horses, wave magic wands and cure the scourge that Bush left? Get real. Bush really f**ked us (and the world) up. Thanks, you ignorant, arrogant, strutting cowboy (who now lives in a multi-million dollar house in a gated community - and STILL has NO contact with those who are suffering out here). It wouldn't be surprising that Bush is clueless about what he did. Not the brightest guy, ya' know? (Altho, at least he didn't write his notes on HAND, for goodness sake.)

I love it. This is funny. I'm not a republican or a democrat but I'm always amused when someone continues to blame Bush & Cheney for the current economy and not congress or greedy people overspending or the banks. And, the best is when they say they are going to "stick it to Bush" and vote Democratic, as if he has anything to do with current Illinois politics.

Do a little research before you open your pie hole and make a fool of yourself!
GOD, YES I MISS GEORGE BUSH!
Obama is an idiot! Did you hear what your president said about small businesses 2day! He said that they would be OK if banks would just loan the small businesses money so they could meet their payroll!! If you are a small business and you are borrowing money to make payroll, then I've got news for you, YOU ARE OUT OF BUSINESS!
For Gods sake Obama has never even run a lemonaid stand!
Posted by: monkeysmasher43 | February 9, 2010 6:36 PM
It's amazing to see people pointing this economic crisis at Bush. It's just a perfect reminder of how short the American attention span is and how we choose to remember history. The housing crisis was the result of the repealing of the Glass-Steagal Act, which happened under Bill Clinton. The G-S Act required financial solvency for loan origination. The ensuing empowerment of Fannie Mae, and creation of Freddie Mac helped this crisis to evolve from a speedbump into a meltdown. The TARP was a disaster, that is true, but it's greatest failure was that it opened the door for a $787 billion "stimulus" bill that did nothing to boost the economy and everything to fund 20+ years of pet project salivating by the Dems and progressive Repubs.
Obama will not learn these lessons until it's too late. By the time he's done campaigning, it will be time to run for office again, and by then nobody will care what his message is.
When you reach the point that your best strategy is "hope," you have already lost the battle. Hope is not a strategy, it is an idiom. It's a greeting card. What the country needs is leadership.

Why would I miss George W. Bush? The man's administration more than doubled our national debt from $5 trillion to $12 trillion, and he's responsible for the biggest economic mess this country has faced since the Great Depression.
As for those who might take issue with me, well, as the late Hawaii Gov. John A. Burns once quipped to an anti-abortion heckler, "Any damned fool can say no - and who am I to try to argue with one?"

Posted by: JB | February 9, 2010 6:48 PM
Listen to me: IT'S NOT ABOUT GWB. It's about his policies, his disastrous policies.
That he failed to give Wall St. the money from our Social Security at the same time that he was cashing in on Wall Street for himself and crashing it for the rest of us is a good failure. The rest of his failures for America were really bad: No Bin Laden, no WMDs, he killed off many of his US troops; He killed off countless innocent Iraqi civilians; He lied about Mobile Bio Labs; He believed Chalabi; No Yellowcake; He outed a CIA agent specializing in spying on Iran; He failed to protect America on 911.
The billboard shoiuld have read, "DO YOU MISS MY FAILURES YET?" The answer, of course is, "NO!" We don't miss them. America does not tolerate failures.

I don't like President Obama. Never did, never will. I am white but I am not racist. So many Obama lovers place THE RACE CARD any time someone says anything bad about him. Racist? Not hardly. Too bad so many people believed in his 'hope and change' without checking out his meager accomplishments. A non-white President is fine by me IF and ONLY IF he is competent. He is not competent enough for the office, not by a long shot. Race is not an issue. Get over it, race baiters.

Do I miss President George W. Bush? He did some things wrong like start to buy into the Global Warming crapola. I don't miss his spending, but then I never thought the look of a $300 billion deficit would look so good.
I never thought 8% unemployment would look so good, but it should would now.
I sure do miss 73 consecutive months of economic growth. I wonder how long the current months of economic growth will last?
I miss a president that tried to stop Fannie and Freddis from running the mortgage crisis into the ground. In case you forgot.

Sadly this didn't get thru Congress.
A major part of the root of this current recession is the gov't itself by making loans affordable to those who could not pay them back. I guess BO should have to solve this recession, since it was his fellow democrats that go us there in the first place.

I miss a preisdent that stands against partial-birth abortions.
I miss a president that understands that cutting high incremental tax rates grow an economy and thus gov't revenues.
I miss a president that understands that when one dies, the gov't shouldn't have the right to seize his/her assets for redistribution.
I miss a president that understands by reducing taxes on capital, he lowers the cost of doing business and thus creates jobs.
I miss a president that understands that free trade creates jobs in this country.
I miss a president that killed the Kyoto Global Warming Treaty.
I miss a president that doesn't believe that job creation starts with expanding the federal payroll.
I miss a president that nominated conservative judges that don;t believe in gov't overreach.

We are missing ourselves. We are missing what we could have done to change this country. We are missing what we could have done. It is never a one person show. Neither Obama nor Bush is entirely at fault for this economic crises. We all share the blame because we all could have done much more to change things. Instead of writing our representatives and volunteering for politically activities we do our own thing, getting caught up in our own lives, blaming everything on the President, and holding them responsible for this Country's direction. (Yeah Obama, that Harvard education REALLY paid off!). He also wasn't trying to turn a Democracy into a socialist state, nor would he have tried a TERRORIST in our civilian courts! Uh, yeah you can disagree with national security issues because although our system FAILED the underwear bomber's incompetence still somehow reflected well on Homeland Security, so who cares (thanks for sparing us any type of logic in yet another response Mr. Gibbs)....
On the other hand, if you disagree with socialized medicine you're a nazi. What country did you think you were in, bud?
I seem to remember the media effecting a rather adoring stance toward war protesters.. dramatically different than their depictions of the seething, vicious, "town hall" voters and their "brutal assaults" last summer on the people who supposedly represent them. That is, of course, until most of the country took that position; then headlines were all "Hey look at this pile of **** up on Capitol Hill".
I love this site, btw. Even those of you who are out of your minds get cred for being civil and sometimes clever. Those that are smart enough to believe what I believe are even better yet, thanks for the laughs.

Miss Bush? Only at the trial for war crimes. But big business and special interest groups are responsible for the GFC, and it is several administrations that removed the controls previously put in place. So don't blame him solely for that. But it is his administration that falsely led the US to war and for that he should be tried. And stop all this socialist crap. You that get social security, vet's benefits, free education and even food stamps need to look in the dictionary. This along with health care for all are called social programs not socialism and I bet there's not a one amoungst you old conservatives getting these benefits would turn them down. How's about you provide some solutions rather than carping on about socialism. Get real.

Sen Phil Gramm (R-TX), Rep Jim Leach (R-IA), and Rep Tom Bliley (R-VA). And yes Clinton was vilified for not vetoing the bill.
So there you go. You just proved that the republican legislation was a leading cause to the financial meltdown in 2008.

It was Bush and his administration that sold this country out. Obama is just guilty of actually believing that he was going to be able to turn a pile of garbage into a candy store in a few short years. It's going to take a good decade to clean up after Bush. ToddM,
Why don't you learn a little bit about Gramm-Leach-Billey Act first before you say it was the cause of the recession.
First, it was signed by President Clinton, back by Larry Summers - now part of BO's inner economic circle and Robert Rubin - Clinton's Sec of Treasury.
Second, it passed with a 90 - 8 Senate vote and a 362 - 57 House vote.
Third, in order to get the dems to buy in, language was inserted that lowered lending standards from the banking industry as part of the compromise that allowed the merger of commercial, investment and insurance under one roof.
It wasn't the latter (original part of GLB Act) that caused the recession, but it was the inserted language that led to the hosuing bubble.
