The Swamp

by Mark Silva

In the course of telling a touching tale at this week's National Prayer Breakfast, President Barack Obama also touched a certain nerve among those who know the valiant work of the Navy Corpsman on the battlefield with the Marines.

"Last month, God's grace, God's mercy, seemed far away from our neighbors in Haiti,'' the president said. "And yet I believe that grace was not absent in the midst of tragedy... It was felt in the presence of relief workers and medics; translators; servicemen and women, bringing water and food and aid to the injured.

"One such translator was an American of Haitian descent, representative of the extraordinary work that our men and women in uniform do all around the world -- Navy Corpsman Christian Brossard,'' the president said. "And lying on a gurney aboard the USNS Comfort, a woman asked Christopher: "Where do you come from? What country? After my operation," she said, "I will pray for that country." And in Creole, Corpsman Brossard responded, "Etazini." The United States of America.''

It was all well told, except that the tale itself lost something in the translation from the TelePrompTer, in the way the president pronounced the word, twice:

"Corpse-man.''

(And that Christian, Christopher... it's Christopher Brossard.)

Some of the president's most loyal critics, those ever-ready to insist that the commander-in-chief is something less than the Harvard Law grad that he is, or is reliant on that omni-present TelePrompTer to deliver his lines, were ready this week to suggest that the PrompTer was waving the president in this case.

Or that Obama had also bought a pass with the ever-fawning media, who were much quicker to note George W. Bush's articulation of the "nucular'' threat and other trips of the tongue. We'd suggest that when the 44th president assembles a catalog of malapropisms equal to the record of the 43rd president's, we'll be more eager to pounce on the "corpse-man'' at the prayer breakfast.

(It was Bush -- see the clips from Memory Lane below --who said: "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we,'' and... "In my line of work, you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda." )

Those weren't PrompTed words.

We'll chalk this one up to a mistake.

In the meantime, one wag has taken a fairly biting bite at the president's mispronunciation of "Corpsman'' with a tale of his own family's experience with the "Marine Corpse." The selected video above also comes from that "American Thinker:''

"My dad was a sergeant in the United States Marine Corpse during World War II and fought in the brutal Battle for Pelelieu, among others. I was very proud of him,'' Tony Gallardo writes there. "The President is also the Commander in Chief of the United States Marine Corpse. My affinity for the military began with my dad's service and my knowledge of the extraordinary sacrifices that our men and women in uniform have made for this great country. Because of this, I enrolled in Army ROTC while in college so I could earn a commission in the U.S. Army. As such, I was a member of the Corpse of Cadets.''

That's okay, the Wingnuts already blew their phony "Obama needs a teleprompter" meme last week when Pres Obama ate the House Republicans lunch ....off script.

OBAMA DESTROYS HOUSE REPUBLICANS WITHOUT TELEPROMPTER

"As though suddenly recalling that he was hailed by scholars as "the Fourth Turning candidate" - in reference to the prophetic political analysis of the masters, Howe and Strauss - Obama looked and sounded more like the charismatic orator of the pre-election days. Even gay bloggers were impressed: Some welcoming back "the real Barack" and redeclaring their love for him on websites. Without use of tele-prompters, and speaking from his center, Obama railed at Republican lack of civility, oppositional neurosis, and socialist name-calling."

I don't know what the Wingnuts are crying about. Their hero Bush Jr couldn't speak even when he had a teleprompter.

This is unbelievably silly. That such an outfit as the Tribune would stoop to this level is appalling. Lay off Obama for this incredibly innocuous and irrelevant incident!

This just goes to show you how inexperienced panty waist is, being commander-in-chief and not knowing to drop the "p" from corpsman.
The mayor of Vegas was right when he said, "This guy is a slow learner." Maybe that's why panty waist refuses to release his college records????

Here's the conclusion from a new poll which studies the mind of the average Wingnutter in America.

Between 20% and 50% of the Republican party is either insane or mind-numbingly stupid, and Washington Post blogger Ezra Klein hints that the results show "a substantial portion of the Republican base is completely divorced from reality.

I'm Shocked!.....not.

Well, except Obama's supposed to be better and smarter than Bush.

Perhaps you people need to find a better standard to hold Obama to other than "Bush did it".

I'm confused. When I was flying in the Navy and received medical treatment, was it from a Navy Corpsman or was it from a Navy CORPSEMAN? Was I dead or alive?

And those brave men and women that also served with me as United States Marines, were they part of the Marine Corps or were they Marine CORPSE?

Then when my father died did I take him to a CORPSEman or a mortician? Wait a second. Wouldn't a CORPSEman be someone who handles bodies of the dead? And isn't that what a mortician does?

I know one thing for sure. If I am a military soldier on the field of battle, I want a Corpsman being the one to see me and not a CORPSEman.

I can't believe that Obama's speechwriter used a word that Obama and his teleprompter couldn't pronounce. I have a vision of a speech writer being fired and a teleprompter being sent to scrap heap and re-cycled as sun roof.

β€œOn this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes – and I see many of them in the audience here today – our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.”

This guy is an idiot! plain and simple
as a former Air Force member, I really don't know how the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the rest of the military can stomach such stupidity, let alone salute this guy, Did you ever notice how he salutes? he wouldn't even make it in the Boy Scouts. For all his supposed education he doesn't show me squat.

We were told that Obama was the smartest and most articulate man ever.

In fact, wasn't it Joe Biden who said of Obama, "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy." (that of course means that people like Martin Luther King and Thurgood Marshall and Colin Powell are either not clean, articulate or nice looking).

So when Obama calls them "corpse-man" (twice), that cannot possibly be a mistake. In fact, he has never made a mistake, so now everyone will have to call them "corpse-men" from now on.

Then Wednesday, Obama told his Democrat minions, "We've gotta make sure that our party understands that, like it or not, we have to have a financial system that is healthy and functioning."

Hmmm. I suppose then that Obama is saying there are Democrats who do NOT want a healthy, functioning financial system. Because, of course, Obama is "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean," to quote Joe Biden.

So who are those Democrats that do NOT want a healthy, functioning financial system? Perhaps it would be good if people assume Obama is correct, and we need to learn who those people are.

Or maybe it's simple - it was everyone in that room with Obama.

I guess this destroys the myth that BO writes his own speeches. I would assume if he uses a word, he would know how to pronounce it or at least be close.

WOW MATTY, HOW'S THAT SHOE ON THE OTHER FOOT? HARVARD LAW GRAD, COMMANDER IN CHIEF, MISPRONOUNCES CORPSMAN THREE TIMES>!?!?!?!??!?!? WHAT DO YOU THING THE CORPSMEN AND WOMEN THINK OF HIS GAFFE?

I know what you mean Paul. As a Nam vet, I ask myself everyday "is our children learning".

Look, must of us would sound stupid if half of what we said was recorded, and people were able to be put together a string of 8 second sound-bites. Obama doesn't always sound as good when he is off-teleprompter. Bush was awful most of the time.

But these kinds of videos can be aired by both the left and the right - and they are all unfair.

What is really astounding about this, is that while GWB was ridiculed for years pronouncing "nuclear" in what is really the DIALECT of the Southwest, President Obama is clearly unfamiliar with the word "corpsman" and makes a GRAMMATICAL mistake. Any bets on how much the MSM will not be flogging this one?

He's not an idiot. He's just not an American. He didn't even know where his own Grandfather served in WWII. He was raised by alienated radicals (including his Grandfather), and is the son of an avowed Marxist. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Obama is who he is.

This could be very funny..If I could hack his teleprompter then "The Won" would say anything I put on there .....I'll let you use your imagination on that one...LOL

Well, obviously none of Barokeydoke's 'Chicago Mafia' had ever heard of the White House press corpse,or the Marine Corpse,or the 17th Airborne Corpse,or the Drum & Bugle Corpse,or the Signal Corpse,or the Peace Corpse,or the Job Corpse,or Americorpse,or even the Lewis & Clark Corpse of Discovery...but considering that they all crawled out of Dickey Daley's toilet, why should anyone be surprised?

The "wingnuts" didn't mispronounce the word. The President did. Also, when I was in college, Obama definitely would have been nicknamed Wingnut, for what it's worth. It's the ears!

In the meeting I saw of the Republicans and Obama they were trying to be polite to the fool.

Funny he destroyed the Republicans last week as you keep prompting but he's kissing their butt's this week for health care. Dang I'm so sick of both parties, Independent is looking real good.

The point is not inability to read a teleprompter. The point is Obama's lack of knowledge and general education, especially in the wake of all the hoopla about how intelligent he is. He is of average intelligence and looks to have a personality disorder. But aside from that, affirmative action has many unintended consequences. Among them is a revelation of a person's qualifications to hold various jobs. This many has no qualifications and has been promoted his entire life based on his skin color. It is pretty obvious. He has also referred in the past to the constellation Orion as "Oreeon." Perhaps he was pronouncing in the Austrian language. He continues to embarrass the nation.

As a fan of neither president, nor a member of either party, what is particularly striking to me about this incident is that the mainstream press has left it alone. A similar faux pas gets a Republican dragged through the mud. As others have pointed out, THIS GUY IS SUPPOSED TO BE A GENIUS! A man who needs a teleprompter to speak to a class of sixth graders seems something less than that, wouldn't you say? And last week's discussion with the GOP caucus was a far cry from "eating their lunch." He took his shots (some a tad cheap), but it's not as if he scored any legitimate debate points, folks. Add to that his recent SOTU reference to the notion that "all men are created equal" being "enshrined in our Constitution," and you just have to wonder. That phrase is part of the Declaration. A mistake we might forgive in a high school civics class, but Obama is purported to be a constitutional scholar, is he not? Increasingly, he appears to be precisely what his detractors claimed from the very beginning: an empty suit. With an empty head.

Barry used the "c" word three times not twice. Let see this guy's Occidental, Columbia & Harvard applications and transcripts. Why is so much about the "Annointed One" hidden? What deceit and disdain for the American people. He's a usurper.

Actually, President Obama pronounced corpseman correctly.

Having a Harvard degree apparently doesn't mean as much as it used to. Of course, most people know how to pronounce "corpsman" correctly long before they get to college, even if they're not in a military family.

Sarko goes negative

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who sought during the 2008 presidential campaign to associate himself with Barack Obama, has become sharply critical of the American president, often comparing Obama unfavorably to himself, according to an article published this week in the authoritative French daily Le Monde.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0210/Sarko_goes_negative.html?showall

Funny, you hung out Dan Quayle as dead meat for misspelling Potato.

But now you cover for a President who obviously was admitted to Harvard Law on some kind of quota system because his academics are substandard just from several of the many gaffes he has made: corpse man instead of corpsman; 57 states in the USA said in Oregon in 2008, and a claim that his uncle had helped liberate Auschwitz which was, in fact, liberated by the Russians.

Obama's narcissism is only exceeded by his hubris and in view of his mispronunciation of something as simple as corpsman leads one to think he is not an intellectual at all. He is an empty suit, painted as an intellectual by a fawning, sycophantic media.

That such an outfit as the Tribune would stoop to this level is appalling. Lay off Obama for this incredibly innocuous and irrelevant incident!
