The Swamp

by Mark Silva

No one is picking over the bones of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid just yet, but at least a couple of high-ranking Senate Democrats have invested the sort of support in the campaigns of fellow Democrats that could come in handy when it's time to make soup.

The Hill today notes that , with Reid facing a reelection fight in his home state of Nevada this year, "the second- and third-ranking Senate Democratic leaders are doling out huge sums of cash, laying the groundwork for a leadership race'' should Reid lose.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), vice chairman of the Democratic Conference, has been the biggest giver to Democratic Senate candidates, The Hill finds -- contributing $210,000 to colleagues and candidates. During the same span, Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) has given $110,000 to Senate candidates.

They have donated through their leadership political action committees (PACs), which allies view as a sign of preparing for a possible leadership battle. While spokesmen for the senators declined to weign in on this speculation, a former aide to one of them tells The Hill: "You have a leadership PAC for a reason: You give to people that you want to support you at some point in the future... Is a future leadership race part of the calculation when you give? Yes, it is."

A "Durbin ally'' is quoted as saying that the idea of replacing Reid is "far more in the mind of Chuck Schumer than anyone else" but acknowledges that Durbin has by no means ignored the possibility. See who has given to whom in the Democratic ranks, and why Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has been a big donor among Republicans, in The Hill's report on leadership PACs and leadership fights.

New Yorkers will do everything in their power to defeat Chuck Schumer. Scott Brown's victory has given us hope that Schumer's Socialistic ways and support of a failing administration will come to an end. The movement is growing in NY. Defeat Schumer at all costs!

Reid's stink hasn't even left the Capital yet, and Durbin and Schumer are already making power plays???

Pass the popcorn, please.

Losing spineless Harry Reid would be the best thing that ever happened to the Dems.

***REMEMBER WHEN REPUBLICANS USED TO CLAIM THAT GENERAL PETRAEUS COULD DO NO WRONG???***

***REMEMBER WHEN REPUBLICANS WOULD CALL ANYONE WHO DISAGREED WITH GENERAL PATRAEUS A TRAITOR???***

-CNN JOHN KING:
"If you ask the White House about this, it highlights -- they say it's not just the president, it's not just Attorney General Holder, that General David Petraeus says he believes a public trial at a federal courthouse is the best way to do it so that it's not an al Qaeda recruiting tool.

That Secretary Gates, a holdover from the Bush administration at the Defense Department, also they believes a trial in the federal court system is preferable to a closed trial in the military commission. And that the CIA operatives leading the fight against these guys in Yemen, in Somalia, in Afghanistan and elsewhere, also believe that if you did it in a closed setting in a military commission it would be a powerful recruiting tool. If General Petraeus, Secretary Gates, and the intelligence leaders say, do it in court, why do you say that's a bad idea?"

-REPUBLICAN CHICKEN-HAWK MITCH MCCONNELL:
"I simply disagree and so do the American people."

When Democrats disagreed with Petraeus, Republicans called them disloyal and stupid. Republicans doing it? Well, that's okay, even if they are disagreeing with the Pentagon, with the CIA, and with the very people taking the fight to Islamic extremists everywhere. Because if there's anyone that desperately wants to wet their pants in fear, it's Republicans. They certainly have no clue how to be "brave" when it's their butt that's on the line.

Leadership opening and you mention Schumer and Durbin? For a leadership position, don't you want a leader? Wait, Harry Reid has the position currently.

At least the dems are getting the lobbyists out of DC - they took them to Miami instead for the fund raiser and private conversations.

A BAG OF COTTON CANDY HAS MORE LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES THAN REID. AS FOR SCHUMER AND DICKIE D, HO HUM.

HOPEFULLY KUDLOW WILL RUN AND OUST CHUCK SCHEMER!!!
*
Run, Larry, Run
A Kudlow challenge to Chuck Schumer would expose the ruinous economics of Washington’s current social agenda.

*
Just when the gloom in the Empire State seemed thicker than ever, a ray of light pierced the darkness. The New York Post reported on Friday that economist and CNBC commentator Larry Kudlow was said to be contemplating a challenge to Sen. Chuck Schumer in response to a Draft Kudlow movement.
*
Could the revolt taking place in other states spread to the epicenter of the tax-and-spend ideal? Voters in New Jersey (who just installed Chris Christie in the governor’s mansion) and Massachusetts (who just sent Scott Brown to the senate) have rejected their state’s machines. That couldn’t happen in New York, right?
*
It’s true that the old guard in the Empire State appears to have as imperially tight a grip on power as ever. Unless a credible opposition emerges, New York’s two Senate seats and its governor’s chair — all up for grabs this year — will almost certainly go to candidates backed by the entrenched political establishment. Andrew Cuomo will take the governor’s mansion; Schumer and his protégé Kirsten Gillibrand, who was appointed by Gov. David Paterson to fill the seat Hillary Clinton vacated, will return to the Senate.

I guess Old Harry has a little problem with history - like he wants to insert himself into it. Here he is trying to dig out of the "Negro Dialect" hole he made for himself.

Harry - when in a hole, put down the shovel.

YOU SHOW ME A REPUBLICAN WHO SAYS THEY'RE GOING TO FIX THE ECONOMY AND I'LL SHOW YOU A LIAR.

The Historic Failure Of Republican Economic Policy

"Republicans are enamored by "supply-side" economics. Frankly, I have to admit it's a very easy sell. Think about it. "Cutting tax rates stimulates the economy to such a high level that tax revenues increase." However, there are several problems with this theory. The first is Republicans have not implemented the other side of "supply-side economics" -- a corresponding cut in government spending. This has ballooned the federal debt to dangerous levels under their economic stewardship. In addition, the projected increase in government revenues really haven't materialized as projected. In other words, supply-side economics is a great marketing concept, but in reality is a poor national policy."

ABC BRINGS US THE LATEST INSTALLMENT IN THE HILARIOUS ADVENTURES OF THE FORMER HALF-TERM REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR OF ALASKA

"Sarah Palin has been using her political action committee to buy up thousands of copies of her book, "Going Rogue," in order to mail copies of the memoir to her donors, newly filed campaign records show."

"The former Alaska governor and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate had her political organization spend more than $63,000 on what her reports describe as "books for fundraising donor fulfillment." The payments went to Harper Collins, her publisher, and in some instances to HSP Direct, a Virginia-based direct mail fundraising firm that serves a number of well-known conservative politicians and pundits."

"Sarah PAC spent another $8,000 on colorful bookmarks designed by a Nashville-based event branding firm. And her committee paid her publisher $20,000 for what appears to have been the cost of sending her personal photographer and another aide along on her book tour. Those expenses are listed by the PAC as travel repayment to Harper Collins."

ABC says Palin's office hasn't told them whether she is accepting royalties from these book sales. She'd be a moron to do so..but then again, Palin is a moron. After all, what's the point of having a PAC if you're not going to use it to pump up sales of your own book? Supporting candidates? Hah!

REPUBLICANS ONLY CARE ABOUT SPENDING WHEN THEY'RE OUT OF POWER.

"Reagan proved deficits don't matter."
- Dick Cheney

"Dick Cheney once observed that "deficits don't matter," which may well have been the most honest phrase he ever uttered. His words were at least partly true, which is more than can be said for the great majority of the vice president's remarks -- and they certainly expressed the candid attitude of Republicans whenever they attain power. His pithy fiscal slogan should remind us that much of the current political furor over deficit spending in the Obama budget is wrong, hypocritical, and worthy of the deepest skepticism."

"In our time, the Republican Party has compiled an impressive history of talking about fiscal responsibility while running up unrivaled deficits and debt. Of the roughly $11 trillion in federal debt accumulated to date, more than 90 percent can be attributed to the tenure of three presidents: Ronald Reagan, who used to complain constantly about runaway spending; George Herbert Walker Bush, reputed to be one of those old-fashioned green-eyeshade Republicans; and his spendthrift son George "Dubya" Bush, whose trillion-dollar war and irresponsible tax cuts accounted for nearly half the entire burden. Only Bill Clinton temporarily reversed the trend with surpluses and started to pay down the debt (by raising rates on the wealthiest taxpayers)."

Dick Durbin is one of the finest public servants in American politics today.

He is, and comes across as, a decent and caring man.

Schumer has a few too many rough edges to be on camera all the time as Majority Leader.

"Reagan proved deficits don't matter."
- Dick Cheney

"Obama is proving deficits do matter (especially when they are near double-digits of GDP)"

Durbin's a real leader in trashing our troops:

WOW!!! REALLY? DON'T SET/DROP THE BAR TOO LOW!!!!!

I just can't figure out what you're mad at sometimes. Would you rather Harry Reid remain majority leader?

If you're a conservative republican, I'm sure you do, as that guarantees nothing gets done in the Senate due to Reid's lack of fortitude.

If you're a disaffected independent, you should want Reid to lose, because with a stronger leader in the Senate, Democrats have a much better chance of actually delivering on their promises, thus making you less disillusioned with government.

But disgusting hack peacocks? I think that may be going a bit far.

Barack Obama: Listen To What The People Want

Expose, if you dare or care, the underbelly of this government that rules us. The corporate conspirators that conspire and aspire to control it all. Open up the Federal Reserve to audit and disclosure so that we know who the owners are and what they are doing with the money they create and make from us in the form of interest which much of our tax dollars go to. Give the power of our money back to us and into the hands of a Treasury Department run not by "one of those".

Free this country from the slavery we - on Main Street - are all victim to. Abolish the "ruling" class and re establish the middle class. In a country as great and mighty as ours, there should be no poor (homeless and hungry).

There will always be an upper class - the rich - but let them become rich through the fruits of their labor, imagination and creativity not by robbing the rest of us. I don't advocate robbing from the rich to give to the poor, but curtail and punish those in the "elite" class so they can no longer rape, pillage and plunder the population at large and at will.

Bring back the usury laws so that the "too big to fail" banksters can no longer charge annual rates of interest of over 30%. Eighteen percent worked so very well for so many years and even then most rates were not in the double digit category. The banks were solvent and profitable then. Wall Street was working well and profiting as well.

NOT TO RUIN IT, BUT HERE'S HOW IT ENDS:
*
The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

HOPE YOU AREN'T VERY THIRSTY!!!

You forgot Warren Buffet.

.
Your post rather ironic.
.
First, you manage to post something that is entirely off topic. The topic here is how two snakes are preparing to take the place of King Snake upon his demise. It has nothing to do with the issue of whether to try terrorists in a civilian court.
.
Second, it is totally ironic that you have found it within your graces to cite, with approval, an Army General whom the Democrats attempted to crucify in the news media a little over two years ago. See http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Decision2008/story?id=3581727&page=1 So, what’s it going to be: Is he a credible source or not?

Ornery,

And Warren Buffet is either ignorant or a liar since the statement is not true.

His 15% Capital gains tax ior dividends on his individual return comes after those earnings or dividends have been taxed at 35% at the corporate level. Unless his secretary is being taxed at just under 50%, the statement is just play FALSE.

Schumer and Durbin, now that's a pair a full house can't beat!.
