Comedy Central's Jon Stewart used his second appearance ever on "The O'Reilly Factor" to levy a robust critique of FOX News, and host Bill O'Reilly mounted an equally robust defense on segments airing tonight and Thursday. (Associated Press photo.)

When Comedy Central's Jon Stewart met FOX News Channel's Bill O'Reilly today, all bets for good-humored humor were off.
Stewart, O'Reilly quickly found, was not there for laughs, but rather to deliver a critique of O'Reilly's network and its treatment of President Barack Obama.
O'Reilly quickly claimed the high-ground of the right to evening commentary, touting the purported objectivity of the network's daily news report, as the Los Angeles Times' Matea Gold reports of today's taping, fodder for O'Reilly Factor segments both tonight and tomorrow. See a FOX clip of the encounter here.
"Here's what FOX has done, through their cyclonic perpetual emotional machine that is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,'' Stewart told O'Reilly. "They have taken reasonable concerns about this president and this economy and turned it into full-fledged panic attack about the next coming of Chairman Mao.''
"I think some people do that, but most people don't," O'Reilly responded, calling it "the narrative of a couple of guys."
Executives at the No. 1-rated cable news network said they were z'unfazed by the critiques,'' Gold reports, with excerpts airing over two nights.
"Jon is entitled to his criticisms," said Bill Shine, executive vice president for programming at FOX. "We both make our living off the Firstt Amendment. We invited him on, and what other place would allow him to do that? That's what makes us No. 1. We invite our critics on and let them criticize us to our face."
Plus, Shine said, "It's good TV. I thought it was fun."

Comments
So, Jon Stewart doesn't like FOX News. Who is he? A comedian! His program isn't exactly fair nor balanced. Most Americans could care less what Stewart thinks.
But, Mark, while we're on the subject of journalism fairness, let's address these points:
1. You mocked FOX News for covering John Edwards today. Edwards's campaign manager has a book coming out, which goes into detail about the Edwards affair, etc. Is that not news? And, again, please tell us how many Swamp items there were on Mark Sanford and how many were on John Edwards and his affair.
2. The media knew about the Edwards affair long before the story broke. Why did the media keep it quiet?
3. Bloomberg reports that the Labor Department has under-reported job losses by over 800,000. I haven't seen that item anywhere in the Tribune or in the Swamp. Why?
4. The Bush tax cuts are about to expire. Obama nor the Democratic Congress so far haven't done anything to extend them, which will mean a tax increase for middle class Americans, those making less than $250,000 a year, which Obama promised would not see a tax increase. Where is coverage of that?
5. Where is the Swamp coverage, or even Tribune coverage, about the failings of the Obama admininstration intelligence community, with even the leaders fearing an attack on the U.S. within the next six months? Or Janet Napolitano skipping out on a recent House hearing?
And then with the swipes youn take at FOX News, I don't see the same sniping at MSNBC. Why? Is Keith Olbermann fair and balanced? Rachel Maddow? What about Olbermann calling Scott Brown a homophobic, women-hating racist the night he was elected and then repeated the comments the next night?
So, Mark, before you sniff about someone else's alleged objectivity failings you might want to look a little closer to home. Objective, fair and balanced news does not seem to be a priority or a concern at the Tribune, its various media outlets and at the Swamp.

I'd say Obama is more like Mussolini with a laid-back hip edge to his corporatist agenda. But BHO can't get those trains, planes or automobiles to run on time anymore.
CNN & MSNBC pulled away from the Scott Brown victory speech, a bigger journalistic crime than Fox cutting off the Obamblather at the one-hour mark.

There's nothing funnier than watching Stewart & Colbert slap around the Faux News Republican propagandist's. If only the rest of the corporate media would do the same...
Bill-O is a tool.

"They have taken reasonable concerns about this president and this economy and turned it into full-fledged panic attack about the next coming of Chairman Mao.''
Well there is where Stewart is dead wrong. You can go anywhere on the internet and read any news story of the past year and come to YOUR OWN conclusion that this President and makeup of congress is very well on its way to becoming the next Chairman Mao.
Obama, Reid, Pelosi & company brought this 'full-fledged' impression upon themselves.
But nice try, Stewart for TRYING to place blame on someone else.

O'Reilly is an overpaid clown who would be doing late night infomercials for a living if it were not for huckster Rupert Murdoch and his funding of a Republican propaganda outlet (Fox) that employs every right wing goon in America.

Reasons why Fox is not a REAL NEWS CHANNEL:
A REAL NEWS ORGANIZATION doesn’t.......PROMOTE and COVER their own protests.
http://mediamatters.org/research/200908280029
A REAL NEWS ORGANIZATION doesn’t.... Lie about the total number of people at the rally THEY PROMOTED...

A REAL NEWS ORGANIZATION doesn’t.... Force people at a protest to make more noise to look good on TV.

A REAL NEWS ORGANIZATION doesn’t... Have NEWS ANCHORS that accuse the president of making a TERRORIST FIST JAB!

A REAL NEWS ORGANIZATION doesn’t.... Have NEWS ANCHORS that calls the current administration a bunch of CRY BABIES

A REAL NEWS ORGANIZATION doesn’t... Go out of their way to bash the current administration by using OLD FOOTAGE and lying by saying it’s recent footage, and CROPPING it to make it look like something else was said!

A REAL NEWS ORGANIZATION doesn’t... Pass off RNC press releases as their OWN FACTS (including the typos)
http://mediamatters.org/research/200902100019?f=h_top
All of the examples cited are from Fox’s so-called NEWS ANCHORS... not the Opinion people like O’Reily, Hannity, and Beck.
This should be pointed out because the line is blurred between journalism and opinion on Fox.
The video examples above are plain and simple, Fox can’t spin their way out of it. They have been called out on the carpet time and time again... EVERYONE KNOWS THIS! Including those corporate media reporters who are so afraid of Fox that they refuse to condemn them.

When people call Faux news "right wing propaganda" and "the media arm of the Republican party" it isn't trash talking, it's the truth.
Check out these pro-Bush internal memos from Faux management. If this isn't propaganda then I don't know what is.

Was good TV.
Better than the Palin interview by far. Have not seen too much of Sarah on Fox since she was hired. It's amusing to hear
people like Billy O propping her up as a Presidential candidate.
Not even close Billy. Scott Brown has a much better chance. By the next election he will have accumulated as much experience in the senate
as Obama had (not much).
Can't wait to see the second part of Stewart vs. Bill tonight.
Stewart stood his ground and made some good points. Dennis Miller is looking a little crusty these days. Someone needs to send him out to a pet groomer or something.

The Liberal Mind: Psychological Causes of Political Madness by Dr. Lyle Rossiter
"Based on strikingly irrational beliefs and emotions, modern liberals relentlessly undermine the most important principles on which our freedoms were founded,”
“Like spoiled, angry children, they rebel against the normal responsibilities of adulthood and demand that a parental government meet their needs from cradle to grave.”
“A social scientist who understands human nature will not dismiss the vital roles of free choice, voluntary cooperation and moral integrity – as liberals do,”
"A political leader who understands human nature will not ignore individual differences in talent, drive, personal appeal and work ethic, and then try to impose economic and social equality on the population – as liberals do. And a legislator who understands human nature will not create an environment of rules which over-regulates and over-taxes the nation's citizens, corrupts their character and reduces them to wards of the state – as liberals do.”
“The roots of liberalism – and its associated madness – can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind,” he says. “When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious.”

Um Johnny, guess you havent read Obamas new budget for 2011. Increasing tax cuts for under 250k households. Increasing Veterans benefits, Increasing tax breaks for small businesses. Increasing budget for education (something you could use)
failings of the Obama admininstration intelligence community, with even the leaders fearing an attack on the U.S. within the next six months?
I'm sorry have we been attacked? Hwere exactly is the failing here? From what I understand, capturing the attmpted undie bomber has supplied our intelligence with some solid information.
As I recall Bush was warned prior to 911. Tell me, what did he do about that intel?

Tiny Timmy, I could give a rat's patooty what is in Obama's proposed budget, except for the $1.4 TRILLION in debt it is. But, Timmy, the fact remains that most of Bush's tax cuts expire and the only way they won't is if Congress and Obama make and sign a bill that extends them. So far, that has not happened nor is there much talk to do so.

Ya and you didnt give a rats ass that Bush's stupid tax cuts during two wars put us in this mess in the first place! Not to mention that except for 4 years (98,99,00,01) Our government has ran a deficit since 1970! Tell me smart ass, how many of those years did a republican reside in the White house? Here let me help you: 28! Democrats 13, of which Clinton was the only President to create a surplus that Bush squandered with his irresponsible tax cuts and funding of two wars! And as far as President Obamas new budget, small businesses, and the middle class will benefit much better than your 1% of the richest people.
Posted by: Tim Green, Fairfield CT | February 4, 2010 3:01 PM
And little Johnny, you still havent answered my question to your number 5. Is it because you didnt give a rats patooty about the intel Bush was given prior to 911 or are you just being complacent as he was?
Prior to Obama, Bush created the largest deficit in history as well as the largest government in history! What do you expect Obama do, nothing? The government has to spend more to get us out of this mess! Or would you rather Obama cut taxes more and have to cut education, medicare, and veterans benefits so you can buy another SUV and flat screen tv?

Nothing looney about the truth Mobbie Dick. Prior to Obama Bush created the largest deficit in history. FACT. Bush created the largest government. FACT.
Since 1970 the US has run a deficit all but 4 years (98, 99, 00, 01) Clinton was the only president to give us a surplus in 41 years. Repugs had the presidencay 28 of those years. Dems 13. Can you do the math or do I have to do that for you too? Idiot.

I get my news from CNN, and my entertainment from FOX. FOX news is a brainwashing program in progress!
