Unlike colleges, high school commencements often have to settle for minor celebrities and former graduates whose fame is local at best.
Now high schools have a chance to snare a Nobel Prize winning president of the United States.
The White House today announced that public high schools will have a chance to win President Barack Obama as a commencement speaker this spring. To win the contest, the school must demonstrate how it is best helping prepare students to fulfill Obama's goal of having the United States lead the world in college graduates.
"Public schools that encourage systemic reform and embrace effective approaches to teaching and learning help prepare America's students to graduate ready for college and a career," Obama said in a video announcing the competition, called The Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.
Education is one of the administration frequently cited goals. Obama has pitched for more aid to all levels of schools and has called for an increase in federal funding for education.
Applications to win Obama must be submitted by March 15. Details are at whitehouse.gov/commencement.

Speaking of education...
It's nice to see the Republican "leadership" is busy teaching kids that it's ok to be a bold faced liar and hypocrite.

Education? Teabagger Republicans don't need no stinkin' education! If they don't like something they just go out and rent a small plane and fly it into building. Problem solved, mission accomplished!

What a Difference a Year Makes [Victor Davis Hanson]
A year ago the media resonated with the celebration of democracy, grassroots pushback against the existing order, the renewal of Congress, and the novel harmony between government and the people.
Now? Suddenly all this seems to be inoperative: Our institutions are supposedly broken and fossilized, rendered so by partisanship or inherent structural problems such as filibusters. The people themselves have almost magically gone from enlightened to dense, gullible, and undeserving of their one chance at progressive salvation.
So what changed? The Obama administration offered a statist agenda of massive deficits, and it blamed Bush for America's current problems. The people revolted, and even the combined power of large Democratic congressional majorities, a ministry-of-truth media, and an Ivy League technocracy could not push through hope and change — largely due to Democratic legislators' worries that they were walking out on a plank that would soon be sawed off by the next election.
The implosion of the Obama administration is newsworthy, but not as astonishing as this petulant liberal reappraisal of both popular political participation and the structure of American government.
Given that the people apparently don't want bigger deficits, more stimulus, statist health care, cap and trade, or "comprehensive" immigration reform, and given that the most influential members of the Obama administration think the people either do or should want those things, we are apparently left with blaming George Bush, or self-righteously blaming the people for their stupidity, selfishness, brainwashing, or racism. Yet all of those assumptions only exacerbate the problem, and if continually voiced will turn a mid-term correction into an abject disaster for Democrats.

Education: Too Important for a Government Monopoly
*
The government-school establishment has said the same thing for decades: Education is too important to leave to the competitive market. If we really want to help our kids, we must focus more resources on the government schools.
But despite this mantra, the focus is on something other than the kids. When The Washington Post asked George Parker, head of the Washington, D.C., teachers union, about the voucher program there, he said: "Parents are voting with their feet. ... As kids continue leaving the system, we will lose teachers. Our very survival depends on having kids in D.C. schools so we'll have teachers to represent."
How revealing is that?

who'd want to listen to this bozo giving a speech (except that leg tingling Matthews)
Most kids today already know that obama's words are empty rhetoric.
It'd be funny to see him booed off the stage though!
I know I'd call him a liar, but that's just stating the obvious.

Republicans hate government and are the wrong people to have in office when there are problems that need to be fixed. They are the wrong people to have in office if people need healthcare reform, Social Security reform, taking care of the environment, or improving the education for our young people. Because, their belief system cannot permit them to believe any of those are problems of government. In their greedy warped minds, every problem is better resolved by their crooked pals on Wall Street, Big Oil and the Military Industrial Complex rather than by government.
It's a fact. Democrats believe in government and Republicans do not believe in "privatizing" everything and then selling you out to the highest bidder. Even if Democrats could fix all the problems that our nation faces, the Repubs would still find a reason and a way to discredit and dismantle whatever progress had been made. (Look at the surplus and balanced budgets at the start of the Bush Administration, they were long gone by the time he left office) It's a continuous struggle to make progress. Democrats can attempt to create programs to make people's lives better and Republicans will continue to tear people back down and destroy those programs (Medicare, Social Security etc) that help them. And the process starts all over again.

Texans prove their stupidity:
*
Nearly a third of Texans believe humans and dinosaurs roamed the earth at the same time, and more than half disagree with the theory that humans developed from earlier species of animals, according to the University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll.
The differences in beliefs about evolution and the length of time that living things have existed on earth are reflected in the political and religious preference of our respondents, who were asked four questions about biological history and God:
*
[...]
*
Did humans live at the same time as the dinosaurs? Three in ten Texas voters agree with that statement; 41 percent disagree, and 30 percent don't know.

The above comments are so sadly irrelevant. We must all be focused on the basic principles. Dealing with government, we must know what these principles are, and study them. Most leaders and teachers ignore principles, with the result that students replying as above make no mention of principles. See "Teaching and Helping Students Think and Do Better" on amazon.

No one is "blaming" Bush. It's just a simple fact. Bush, Cheney, and the short-sighted, destructive politices of the Republican Party, created the disaster we're all living with now, but yet deny any responsibility for their mistakes and childishly refuse to work toward solutions. Doesn't it embarrass you Repubs to watch your elected officials cross their arms and pout like spoiled children? And who exactly is to blame for the Republican Party's stupidity, selfishness, brainwashing, and racism? Apparently you were born like this. One more reason to support Pro-Choice candidates.

That's right throw more money at a system that does not work now. Make the public schools compete for our money, vouchers work.
