There's a certain circularity to this little spat:
It revolves around a FOX universe, where a cartoon program that knows few boundaries featured the character Chris on Sunday falling for a girl with Down syndrome. When he asked what her parents do, she said, "my mom is the former governor of Alaska."
On FOX News Channel's The O'Reilly Factor on Tuesday night, the real former governor of Alaska took exception to the FOX program's joke about her youngest child, Trig. Palin also is a FOX News contributor.
It was OK a while back, however, in Palin's recent appearance on FOX News Sunday, that radio's Rush Limbaugh had dismissed Democrats as "retards.'' That was "satire,'' Palin explained.
That had led Comedy Central's Steven Colbert rather indelicately to ask who was the retard, with a modifier that we'll leave to Palin's own narrative below - a modifier which the White House's own Rahm Emanuel had once employed, leading to a recent apology to the people who sponsor the Special Olympics. (The president, too, once had had to apologize for likening his own bowling skills to those of Special Olympiads.)
Last night, on The O'Reilly Factor, Palin, the GOP's 2008 nominee for vice president and recent star of the TEA Party "convention" in Nashville, weighed in from Arkansas with some thoughts about the show, The Family Guy.' And she had some thoughts about the White House's chief of staff as well.
"This world is full of cruel, cold hearted people, who would do such a thing,'' Palin told host Bill O'Reilly, who made an effort at sorting out the difference between the pass that Palin had given Limbaugh and the criticism that she had for Emanuel and now The Family Guy.
"Look, I look at Trig and I see perfection,'' his mother said. "I see a precious little child already toddling around. You can see that he has a heart of gold. I also can see into the future that Trig is going to have a pretty tough challenging life in front of him. He's going to face things special needs children will be facing, much more difficult than we ever will. So why make it tougher on the special needs community? That's what I thought when I first heard about this episode that really isn't funny....
"You know, you had Rahm Emanuel using the f'ing retard term, calling people out,'' Palin said. "And you've had other people mocking, even our president mocked Special Olympiads. And well, what do you say about this FOX Hollywood episode of this cartoon?...
"When is enough enough?'' Palin asked. "And when are we going to be willing to say, you know, some things just aren't really funny.''
O'Reilly also had this to say: "You call for Rahm Emanuel to actually step aside, because he said f'ing retard. And then Rush Limbaugh said it, he was talking about political correctness, that was before Emanuel, I think it was. But you said okay, there was a difference between what Emanuel did and what Limbaugh.''
"Let's clarify,'' Palin said. "First, Rahm Emanuel, who represents the most powerful man, the leader of our free world, called people a group of people whom he disagreed with f'ing retards. Quite inappropriate. And on my Facebook I said there too, I don't think he should be part of our president's inner circle making decisions that affect every single one of us. So that's what I said about Rahm Emanuel...
"But I think he's given our president some very bad advice in a whole realm of different areas,'' she said. "So I think, you know, there needs to be replacement there.
"And as for Rush Limbaugh, no, I believe that it was after Rahm
Emanuel said what he said that Rush Limbaugh, using satire, not calling a group of people f'ing retards but using, yes the R word. And I said that calling names, any person, any party, it's just, come on, let's all grow
up. And let's not call each other names, because it certainly kind of
invalidates what our argument's all about when we start calling people
names.''
"Okay,'' O'Reilly said, "But just to be clear, you didn't come down on Mr. Limbaugh because you felt that, what, he didn't have any ill intent in what he said? Or why didn't you come on him a little harder?
"As I have explained, he was using satire using the R word so
he can bring to light what it was that Rahm Emanuel was calling other
people,'' she said. "I think that's why a lot of people said, 'Okay,
well, you come down hard on the president for teasing Special Olympiads. You come down hard on Rahm Emanuel for calling people f'ing retards. Are you going to say anything about FOX having this episode about "Family Guy teasing special needs child? And that's why I reacted to that one, too.''

Comments
RetardGate has become the never-ending saga thanks to Sarah Palin.
It should be pointed out that Rahm Emanuel's comments were made in a closed-door meeting with members of his own party. News of the comments leaked out and Palin took that as an opportunity to interject her and her son into the fray for the free publicity that it has generated for her.
Palin has a double standard when it comes to her family. On the one hand she vigorously defends her family members' need for privacy when jokes are made. On the other, she hauls them into the fray when it suits her constant need for attention.

So it's simply satire coming from one of your own but grounds for termination coming from an opponent.
More moral relativism from the obstructionist party.
Please let this twit be the front runner in 2012.

She lost all credibility on this issue when she laughed off Limbaugh's comments.

Let's see - Sarah Palin says that it's OK to talk about 'retards' as long as it's done satirically. I think that most proper thinking people would regard Family Guy as marginally more satirical than Rush. So who has crossed a line? Family Guy, for doing what they do, or Sarah Palin for being an unrepentant hypocrite?

It's fun to watch how everyone has a cow when Palin's name pops up in any context. I've never understood why liberals are so afraid of her. If she is as dumb, stupid, etc etc etc. you would think her presence would disappear from the face of the earth in the normal coursr of events (ie who was Doles running mate? or Jimmy Carters when he lost to ragen?) Right or wrong the more the liberals and the media jump on everything Palin the more she's pushed into the public eye. Or........is there something there for next election and libs are scared?

Funny that liberals at The Swamp cant resist frothing at the mouth over Sarah Palin.
Just bring up her name, and the followers that gave us the dysfunctional Barry O start twitching like zombies.
Someone like Gallup should put out a poll showing something positive about her, so we can watch the left wing can spazz-out.

It's okay if you're strong outspoken woman as long as you're a liberal. If the woman is not a liberal she used to be made fun of and ridiculed by the loony liberals. It was fine during the election to have Palin hung in eulogy but, what has it was Hillary Clinton. I can guarantee you that the loony liberals and their comrades in the mainstream media would have had a fit. Now if South Park would have put trade Chelsea Clinton or one of the Obama daughters I bet you the loony liberals and their comrades in the mainstream media would be calling for the show to be canceled.

I'm trying to figure out what she was a victim of this time?
Palin has a down syndrome child, right? Is this a bad thing? Is it now insulting to reference that? Or is Palin insulted by having a DS child? Where is the insult? Nobody used the word retard so I'm not sure how this even relates to some of the recent controversy either.
Hey Sarah! How's that thin-skin-y thing workin' out for ya?
Posted by: Marcy S | February 17, 2010 1:40 PM
And let the piling on begin.......
Amazing that someone would get upset when a cartoon blatently took a shot at them and their kids. They could have done the episode without throwing in the former Gov of Alaska part, and it would have been fine. But they went out of their way to include her in it. And everyone is shocked when she responds. I dare Family Guy to do an episode with a reference to Obama's wife or kids. Then watch the outrage pour in. It is an easy target, going after the Palins or a Republican's family, but you never see these brave writers do it to someone on the left. Just leave her family alone. If you want to go after her, go after her.

All politicans' kids are off-limits. Period, End-of-Story. The Cartoon was not funny nor was it appropriate.
Posted by: Darkwater | February 17, 2010 1:44 PM
I saw nothing offensive about the Family Guy episode. They depicted the girl with Down Syndrome as smarter than the Chris character just as Trig Palin is surely smarter than his mom.
Posted by: J McCain | February 17, 2010 1:46 PM
Leave Sarah Palin out of it and concentrate on what was aired on The Family Guy. No matter who voiced concerns about the episode, it wasn't right. Fox should pick on someone their own size and not a little boy (or girl) who has no ability to defend themselves. Why is it wrong for someone to defend their child? No matter what Sarah said before (come on now, how can she slam Raul but defend Rush?) she was defending her little boy who can't defend himself. A parent (even Sarah) should be commended for that. Try to walk a mile in a parent's shoes who's had to live with a disabled child. Until you do that, any negative words towards Sarah (I am not a political supporter of hers) is nothing more than hot air.

Al Capone,
There is absolutely nothing those of us on the left are scared of regarding Palin.
Most of us truly hope she gets the nod in 2012.
She will get creamed.
Can anyone even imagine how she would handle a debate with Obama. It almost makes me sad for her if it were to happen.
Almost.

We are afraid that she may actually represenent a large group of people in the USA, and that if that is in fact the case, our country is really a mess. Please. This isn't 1970 anymore. With the internet, people are more aware of whts going on and are immediately able to respond. There is no fear here, just contempt and mockery. As for why she is still in somewhat of a spotlight? Simple, she is where your attention is supposed to be instead of the real issues.
Noone fears Sarah Palin, not even retards.

I'm sure Palin understands that the butt of most of the jokes is NOT disabled Trig, but Sarah her ownself. And a lot of people also recognize, and don't admire, her hiding behind her child and feigning outrage on his behalf.

March 2011: Sarah Palin Outraged Over Breadstick
A.P: After eating dinnner at the Olive Garden, Sarah Palin took to Twitter to express outrage and dismay that her waiter didn't bring a second order of garlic breadsticks after she asked. "This is yet more examples of how the liberal media tries to ignore real, hard working Americans, by denying them breadsticks. Clearly Barack Obama's job stimulus has failed. How's my makeup?" The former half-term governor of the 47th least populated state in the union remarked. Her 17 Twitter fans agreed, as well as the 24 attendees at "Teabagger-Palooza," being held in the local Tea Klux Klan hall. Polls showed 98% of Americans no longer cared what Palin had to say about breadsticks. Regardless, the Sunday talkshows booked breadstick manufacturers, Olive Garden employees, people who'd eaten breadsticks and, of course, Newt Gingrich, John McCain and Joe Lieberman on all three networks for commentary on what they're now terming: "Breadstickgate."

More attempts by the media to distract Americans from the real issue, which is Obama's utter failure and continuing collapse. A year ago, Obama enjoyed a 70 percent approval rating. Today, he's in the mid 40s with a staggering 52 percent of Americans against a second term according to a new CNN poll out yesterday. More Americans everyday are waking up to the fact that Obama is a con man. Nothing more.

I think we can have bi-partisan agreement that using the "R" word is in bad taste, whatever the context. Ms. Palin is right to criticize those who abuse it, but she looks like a political opportunist when she waffles on the degree of incorrectness based on who says it.
As an Obama supporting moderate, I'm thinking that if there is a God, he/she will find a way to make Ms. Palin the Republican presidential candidate in 2012. Not only would that guarantee a landslide for Obama, it would make the race extremely interesting to follow - just waiting to see what would come out of her mouth next.

Here's an idea. How about we worry less about Palin and more about the fact that when the GOP lost control of the House and Senate, the annual budget deficit was $161 billion. Obama's budget for next year, not including his "stimulus" scam, calls for $1.6 trillion in red ink. Thus in three years of democratic control the deficit has swell from 161 billion to 1,600 billion. That's the opposite of gridlock -- that is one party rule by the party of massive spending and unlimited pork. It's Obama, not Palin, that is the real problem in America right now.

Mark Silva and his Merry Band of Loony Left Misfits somehow fail to see differences in what has taken place regarding Sarah Palin and her son, Trig. Surely, if Palin were a liberal Demoncrat her kids would be off limits and if a conservative had made fun of her kid or those with Down's Syndrome, Mark Silva and his Merry Band of Loony Left misfits would be having catatonic seizures of mass proportions.
I am not a PC kind of person. In the past I have used the same terminology Rahm Emanuel did. Is it right? Probably not. Am I the Chief of Staff to the President of the United States? No. And the bar should be raised for someone in that position. Of course, Rahm used that term in regard to the Far Left, so I do give him some credit, though to be honest it is insulting to those with special needs to be lumped in with far left loons. Kids with special needs are great, loving people. Far Left Loons are just plain worthless.
As far as the Family Guy. Sorry, but that was pretty crude, rude and obnoxious. How about a Family Guy episode about Al Gore's son's drinking and drug problems? But we're going to make fun of a kid with Down's Syndrome?
As far as Limbaugh is concerned, he clearly was being satiric and using the episode to make a point.
In the end, I want the Loons on the Left, Hollyweird and Corrupt Media to continue doing what they are doing because the majority of good Americans are sick of it, don't like it and will vote as many Lefty Loons out of office as possible. Oh, and media types like Silva will continue to become more irrevelent than they already are.
Posted by: John D | February 17, 2010 2:47 PM
Regardless of which party you follow, I can't possibly see how anyone can think Palin is intelligent. She continues to put her foot in her mouth and people continue to come to her defense. Liberals aren't the only ones laughing at her. A look at how the rest of the world views her reveals they also think she's a joke.
FYI, South Park did an episode on the Obamas and no one blinked an eye. The arguments regarding a double standard based on the party are plainly wrong. Fanatics on both sides of the aisle find ways to freak out about anything not squarely down the middle.
It's time for Palin to get over herself and start proposing concrete solutions to the problems she claims to see with the Democrats. It's easy to point fingers and play the victim card, but difficult to actually be a leader and address problems (look at how hard it has been for Obama).

Listen closely every time Sarah Palin opens her mouth. What does she spew? Insults, put downs, negativity towards other people. It's not 'satire'. When Palin makes offensive comments - often bold face lies by the way - it is straight from her heart. I couldn't care less about Sarah Palin. The fact that this woman has become a GOP puppet selling out her own child to stir up a faux controversy is deplorable. To suggest that Rush Limbaugh is a satirist is ridiculous. Rush Limbaugh does not present himself like Jon Stewart. There is a big difference between those spreading anger and hate and those who are on the comedy channel producing satire. Much like The Family Guy. The Family Guy is a show the GOP and Sarah Palin are upset about. Really? Leave it to the GOP and Faux News trying to stir up controversy once again where there is none. Nice Try.

I'm sure most of you complaining about Family Guy did not even see the episode. Down Syndrome people were not made fun of. In fact, Chris' character wants to date a DS girl because he thinks she's pretty and sweet. He doesn't even notice her DS. The only way the Palins are brought in is when the girl says her mom was the former guv. That's it. No insult there. Is it wrong to insinuate that Palin has a DS child? It's true, she does have a DS child. Watch the episode and tell me where Sarah was insulted or where Trig was made fun of.
Posted by: dbcgr | February 17, 2010 2:54 PM
Joe, did you WATCH the episode? The down's syndrome character clearly was NOT a helpless girl unable to defend herself. She was opinionated and clear about what she wanted. In fact, she was portrayed as just as boorish and self-serving as the rest of the characters on Family Guy, which is about as open-minded and accepting a way to treat a disabled character as I can think of.

Are you people serious? You debate Palin, who has no impact on anything, while in fiscal 2009, total government spending (federal, state and local) exceeded 40 percent of everything produced in the U.S. Only once before was that line crossed -- in World War II. When the Obama nanny state spends so much, less is left for people to spend as they choose. Nothing today justifies the confiscation of nearly half of people's productivity by big government. Yet Democrats continue to propose costly programs that Americans will have to pay for with the fruits of their labor. Wake up, Americans.

It's like how the liberals covered for Hillary when she spoke to predominantly black groups with a Black "accent."
Instead, people like Plain are attacked for even bringing it up while the liberals get a pass.

Every episode of Family Guy is offensive to someone.
The Spanish maid who wants her lemon pledge.
Tom Cruise has gay thoughts. Kelly McGillis has a face like a mule.
Bill Clinton had sex wih both Peter & Lois.
Kobe Bryant gets out of rape chages by spinning a basketball in front of the police.
It goes on & on and is definatley nothing new. I'm sure Asian folks like how reporter TrishaTakanawa is portrayed.
Please, the cartoon is an insult to every race, religion & famous person out there. I am also sure the Family Gay episode did not offend the gay community. PLEASE.
There was entire episode before this one called Petarded that made fun of special needs people altogether! Where was the outrage then. The show starts with a disclaimer that says it may be offensive. Well it is to most people. I think it's funny but will not let my kids ever watch it. This show is dangerous to show a 10 year old. They will deem it to be the truth, it is obviously not!

Palin Event in Arkansas has Large Number of Empty Seats - EVEN IN FREAKING ARKANSAS!?!?
Sarah Palin = professional corporate media victim. Republicans LOVE to play the phony tough guy role and then when they get punched in the face with their lies, they fall back into "poor me, victim mode".....Palin does this better than any of the reich winger's do.

Has anybody seen this clip - its not even that funny - what a lot of hot air about nothing - its done so matter of factly - it's like hearing someone read a resume - my mother is the former governor of Alaska - that's it...? Can't say I'm not hugely dissapointed.
I thought there was going to be some big harsh reference to her whoring her children around for sympathy votes - or blasting wolf cubs from helicoptors, death panels or the spill baby spill crowd of nazi haters organized by corporate america to de-rail everything a black president tries to do....because he's black.
Sorry nothing that juicy - nothing zero - nothing controversial -
The actual twist is that the handicapped person is the alpha character in the clip and the one in charge and in control - and that's a good thing. The character isn't seen as an equal to the non-handicapped character but superior in every way - that's the joke - a.k.a. Trigg is superior in every way to Sarah - who is a fake, a liar, a money grubber, and woefully inept to be trust worthy and ignorant about the history of the world and the united states - but vote for her for president because she gets her hair done and wears expensive glasses and likes to shoot defenseless animals - all allegedly "normal" attributes - get a clue America - you are so easily manipulated it's pathetic.

All I'm sorry I forgot a word or was there a typo. That's right you're one of the loony liberals so you're perfect. See you in November crying in your drink.
And I see a lot of the loony liberals here are still using the DNC's talking points about Limbaugh. I bet none of you loony liberals even took the time to hear the whole take of what was said by Limbaugh. First of I do not listen to him on a daily basis. But I did hear the whole thing not just the sound bites from your comrades in the mainstream media. And I bet most of you are just too lazy to go and listen to it.

BREAKING NEWS!!!
REPORT: After Voting To Kill Stimulus Bill, 110 GOP Lawmakers Tout Its Success, Ask For More Money
"As the economy continued to crater after Republican President George Bush left office, Obama’s stimulus sought to provide tax cuts for 95% of working Americans, funds to buoy cash-strapped state governments, new construction and infrastructure projects, and other programs to create jobs, retrain workers, and promote economic activity throughout the country. In December, the Congressional Budget Office reported that the stimulus had successfully created up to 1.6 million jobs, and today, a report shows the Recovery Act will ultimately create 2.5 million jobs. Even the conservative American Enterprise Institute found that the stimulus had boosted the U.S. economy by 4 percent."
"Individually, over half of the entire Republican caucus has hailed nearly every aspect of the stimulus as a success — from infrastructure funds, to food programs, to education grants. But politically, admitting its success might harm the GOP’s chances in November. So with Republicans fixated on winning politically, they have focused on deceiving the public by calling the stimulus a failure, while pretending successful programs aren’t stimulus funded."

Sarah Palin aside, I find the Family Guy humorous in parts. At the same time I think that the episode in question was distasteful and plain wrong becuase it obviously skewered a 2 yr old child with a disability through no fault of his own.
At the same time, you can't forgive one instance of obvious distasteful use of the R word with Rush and not the actual satirical use of it in a television program (owned by her new employers, by the way). Whatyou end up with is a credibility gap.
The First Amendment protects that speech, no matter how distasteful, from Rush, Family Guy, Rahm Emmanuel.
So Sarah, are you for or against the Constitution?

The Family Guy is tasteless trash. Certainly it is fodder for criticism. That's what Palin is doing, criticizing trash, you know like the other trash: Letterman, the MSM, all the "entertainment" shows that play to the lowest common denominator. It's similar to the way the democrats garner votes by playing up class warfare, jealousy, envy. And, then they claim that they are building a better society. A better class of trash. Congrats Dems.

Sarah Palin is a joke and people who listen to her are a joke.
It all seems so convenient for her to take up a cause when it gets her publicity. Why else would she complain about Rahm Emmanuel and Family Guy on Facebook. Why do it publicly? Because she loves the spotlight and unfortunately for our country there are people who pay attention to her.

Okay, Todd, you’re going to have to explain to me why Palin’s negative remarks about the Family Guy episode have anything to do with the First Amendment or freedom of speech. I have always been under the impression that the First Amendment is a restraint against actions by the State and Federal governments that abridge speech. Sarah Palin is now a private citizen. Her actions are not those of a state or federal official.
.
In addition, criticizing someone else’s exercise of free speech is not, and never has been, an “abridgement” of free speech. To the contrary, it is part of an individual’s right to free speech to criticize others, including the manner in which others have exercised their own free speech rights. In the “free marketplace of ideas” the socially and lawful correct answer to bad speech is more speech that counters it, even if it involves criticism. Speech is not free only when it is immune from criticism. Thus, Palin’s comments regarding the tastelessness of the Family Guy episode that picks on the cognitively challenged is well within the best traditions of free speech.
.
Or maybe I missed something. Did she advocate the use of government authority to censor Family Guy? If she did, I missed it. If I did, please forgive me for my lack of attentiveness.

First of all, the character with Down Syndrome is a woman NOT a baby boy being dangled under an arm like a loaf of french bread.
Secondly, the wqoman who did the voice over for this character has Down Syndrome and took no offense whatsoever at this satire.
And thirdly, Palin shouts free speech whenever it suits her but when it comes to anyone else its bad and an apology is expected.
Perhaps she should write the 1st amendment on the palm of her hand to remind her of that!

A few years ago when Hillary wanted to get video games banned where was all the outrage over that?
