The Swamp

by Kathleen Hennessey

NASHVILLE -- If the National Tea Party Convention hoped to keep its focus on political organizing and its message on limited government, it has had little success so far.

Capping the first full day of the meeting, right-wing instigator Joseph Farah spent much of his dinner speech questioning whether President Obama was born in Hawaii and casting doubt on whether the president was legitimately elected.

"The media, the politicians ... all say, no, it's all been settled. I say, if it's been settled show us the birth certificate. Simple," Farah's said, as his remarks were cheered by the roughly 600 activists gathered in Nashville for the event.

Farah runs WorldNetDaily.com, a conservative tabloid, book publisher and tireless critic of the administration. He dismissed those who say he is obsessed with the birth certificate issue saying, "I admit it, I'm obsessed with the Constitution."

Farah said he believed establishing lineage was important for leaders, using Jesus' genealogical ties to King David as an example. Obama has produced his official Hawaii birth certificate (see the state-certified copy below), though those associated with the "birther" movement claim they want to see a copy of the original document issued.

Farah's comments followed remarks from former Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo on Thursday night in which Tancredo called Obama a "committed socialist ideologue."

Farah went on to urge tea party activists to think beyond winning congressional elections in November and "take over not only the political institutions, but the cultural institutions, like the press, the entertainment industry, the universities, and yes the churches."

"Are you ready to engage in a cultural war after we take back Congress?"

"Yes!" the crowd yelled back.

Unsustainable
We are incentivizing financial unsustainability.
-
The one thing that can be guaranteed is that a political class led by Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, a handful of reach-across-the-aisle Republican accomodationists and an economically illiterate narcissist in the Oval Office is never going to rein in unsustainable spending in any meaningful sense. That leaves Director Elmendorf’s alternative scenario. What was it again? Oh, yeah: “Some collapse down the road.”
-
Speaking of roads, I see that, according to USA Today, when the economic downturn began, the U.S. Department of Transportation had just one employee making over $170,000. A year and a half later, it has 1,690.

Happy days are here again!

Spain experiencing debt implosion
Clarice Feldman
Barcepundit reports that Spain is imploding under the weight of its huge short term debt and that Zapatero is finding few defenders.

In Greece, the response to a directive from the EU to cut government spending is being met by nationwide strikes. In Portugal, the economic situation is also out of hand.
Once upon a time, profligate nations like these would find their currencies devalued to reflect the actual conditions of their economies. Now that they are sharing a common currency, the rest of the European nations have to be very concerned about the effect this has on the value of their own (shared) currency.

Nice looking birth certificate.....too bad it won't get you a drivers' license from the D.M.V. in the U.S., or a passport from the U.S. because of it's abbreviated form.

Walking around with teabags dangling off your hat, slapping you in the face, is no way to go through life.

"They sound like a bunch of proto fascists", one caller said this AM on Washington Journal.

Where's Ross Perot?

Why haven't these teabaggers demanded to see the birth certificates of any other politician? Because they're racists, that's why.

Whacko's in the wings. Sure, this will really fly with sane Americans.

Some culture war. The difference is being responsible for ones own actions and the consequences thereof. Or in the blaming of everyone else for ones selfishness and irresponsibility. What part of this can one NOT understand????

YEP, THAT'S GOTTA BE THE REASON, BC. EVERYTHING'S ABOUT RACE WITH THE CLOSET-RACIST LIBS.

The Tea Bag movement will never be taken seriously until they break away from the silly stuff. I cant believe we are still talking about the Birth Certificate. This can all go away simply by interviewing the officials in Hawaii. Why don't they have people from Hawaii on to discuss what that state uses as there Birth Certificate. To say that you can't get a drivers license or passport with that Birth Certificate is stupid since Obama had both. Each state uses there own style of Birth Certificate. The State of Hawaii says that is what they use. You guys need to take the matter up with the Republican Governor of Hawaii. Who has been quoted as saying the State of Hawaii says its official. If the Tea party Movement is to move forward they need to get realistic. Whenever I start to agree with what the movement is saying they go silly on me. Tom Tancredo please (not sure of spelling).

Thats funny, I got my passport with the exact same type of certificate. Tell me moron, how many people have their original BC? If this BC was good enough for Democrats and Republicans alike, in Congress then tell me, why isnt it good enough for you? You do know that they all approved it right? Do you actually believe your party of no would have allowed Obama to run if they didnt believe he was a citizen? You just prove more and more how idiotic you people really are!

The issue is not the President, the birther lawyers, or the Tea Party itself. The issue is the U.S. Constitution. The first paragraph of the United States Supreme Court's website makes the following promise to the American People - “As the final arbiter of the law, the Court is charged with ensuring the American people the promise of equal justice under law and, thereby, also functions as guardian and interpreter of the Constitution.” To date, the United States Supreme Court has failed to do anything in furtherance of the search for the truth about Obama's natural born citizen status. Furthermore, not one single solitary person or agency in the Executive, Legislative, or the rest of the Judicial branch of government has done anything other than accept Obama’s posted Certification of Live Birth as conclusive evidence of his alleged birthplace.

Mr. Obama claims that he was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. As his only evidence that he meets the Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the U.S. Constitution’s requirement that a President be a natural born citizen, he produced a scant summary document called a “Certification of Live Birth,” which he posted on his website under the title: “Barack Obama’s Official Birth Certificate.”

At first blush, it is case closed. A closer examination of the facts, however, reveals that Mr. Obama failed to point out on his website that his posted “Official Birth Certificate,” as he called it, is actually a 2007 computer-generated, laser-printed scant summary document of his 1961 vital record(s) on file with the Hawaii State Department of Health. What we do not know, however, is what 1961 vital record the Certification of Live Birth is summarizing.

In 1961 there were at least six different procedures available to obtain a vital record (birth certificate) that the Certification of Live Birth could be summarizing. Five of the six procedures lacked adequate indicia of reliability and trustworthiness because they were fraught with the potential for fraud. That said, an “official” state-issued document that summarizes a document that lacks adequate indicia of reliability and trustworthiness is not worth the paper it is printed on. Scans of the original Hawaii Revised Laws from that era can be found at http://birther.com.

I'll close this post with a quote: "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

.
You will be happy to know that there are influential people in the Tea Party movement who reject the ‘birther’ position. Glenn Beck, of all people, takes the position that the birthing issue is totally bogus. He is convinced that Obama was born in Hawaii because of contemporaneous birth announcement in two Hawaiian newspapers that corroborate the birth certificate’s information. He reasons: How could anyone anticipate Obama’s election in ’64, so as to motivate them to falsify birth announcements? He obviously has a point. And remember, Beck is very, very popular with the Tea Party movement.
.
The issues for most Tea Party protesters are the expansion of government, excessive government spending and the imminent increase in taxes. According to people in the movement, the Tea Party is not a Republican group. It takes aim at all politicians, Democrat, Republican or Indy who are responsible for government excess and waste. I agree with you that the group should stick to those positions if it wants to maintain a modicum of legitimacy. The movement would be better without opportunists like Tancredo and Palin too.
.
I, for one, have always thought the birther argument was stupid and unwise. Even if Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii, the government’s acceptance of the election results is legally unimpeachable. Challenges to his qualifications for office should have been and decided before the election. In any event, I think it is better for Americans, and particularly those who elected Obama, to suffer four years of his administration. That way, they will remember for decades why they should never elect anyone like him again.

That is so not true! but you idiots will never believe it. As if HRClinton didnt do everything in her power to prove he is not a citizen! Give me a break.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!

Tic: Actually, i have my original copy and I'm sure millions and millions of Americans have theirs', sorry to hear you were too stupid to hang on to yours'.

Separately on your passport statement, you didn't get one with an uncertified BC like Barry threw out there. it has to have a raised embossed seal, you don't have to believe me though, you can go to the govt. web site for passport requirements, So Tic this would make you either a liar, or a moron...perhaps both i suspect.

syj,
.
It’s a bit disheartening to see so-called liberals like you so ignorant when it comes to civil rights. I thought Democrats were supposed to have the party of civil rights? Oh, that’s right: You are only in favor of civil rights when it supports your own political agendum.
.
Dig this:
.
“[T]he constitutional guarantees of free speech and free press do not permit a State to forbid or proscribe advocacy of the use of force or of law violation except where such advocacy is directed to inciting or producing imminent lawless action and is likely to incite or produce such action….
.
“the mere abstract teaching . . . of the moral propriety or even moral necessity for a resort to force and violence is not the same as preparing a group for violent action and steeling it to such action."

These are the words of the United States Supreme Court in Brandenburg v. Ohio, 395 U.S. 444, 447-48 (1969). Look it up. You can find it at: http://supreme.justia.com/us/395/444/case.html
.
In other words even had Farah’s advocated the overthrow of the government (which he didn’t), his speech still couldn’t be considered a crime unless his advocacy was directed at producing imminent lawlessness in the crowd he addressed. That wasn’t the case. His advocacy was directed to action at some indefinite future time.
.
If, however, ignorance were a crime, the cops would be at your door today.

My sister, who has served in Law Enforcement and is now working with her home state's AG's office does not have her original Birth Certificate - it burned up in a fire when the hospital she was born in burned to the ground (back then, the hospital kept the originals). She has a drivers' license and a passport. Shut up

We won the election and now these sore losers will continue to spew your hate with lies. The way our courts work is that you get a competent lawyer, verifiable facts and present them to a judge, if the facts are real and not half baked lies, then, and only then, you proceed to trial. The Birthers seem to be having a problem with their so called facts that they present. Let’s face it no one will go along with you until you guys win a case, but until then, you will continue to appear dumb, crazy or racist, or maybe all three. Keep plucking that chicken.

John W said above "Even if Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii, the government’s acceptance of the election results is legally unimpeachable. Challenges to his qualifications for office should have been and decided before the election."

Agreed. But we have another election coming up in 2012.
