Amid word that President Barack Obama has delayed his planned Pacific and Asian tour next week - including stops in Guam and Indonesia - the House Republican leader said today that no amount of pressure on Congress can pass something - healthcare reform in this case - which the public is not supporting.
"All I know is that the American people are adamantly opposed to this health bill,'' Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) said in an appearance on MSNBC's The Daily Rundown this morning. "And I've always found it impossible for the Congress to pass something that the American people know about and have decided no.''
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi "can try all she wants,'' Boehner told NBC's Chuck Todd. "My job is to keep House Republicans unified and to keep the American people engaged in this fight to stop this government takeover of our health care system.''
What about the idea that the American public might actually like the bill once people see it - polling has found support for various elements of the package, but overall doubt and resistance to the entirety of it, particularly in the absence of any bipartisan support for it.
"Well, I don't think that's the case,'' Boehner said, "because Democrats of all stripes are hearing from their constituents, and their constituents have been pretty vocal in telling them, we don't want $50 billion worth of Medicare cuts. We don't want $500 billion in new taxes. We don't want these mandates on employers that may cost me my job and cost me my health care.
"It's a very dangerous proposal that they're putting forward to take the best health care system in the world and to turn it on its head in their effort to have more government control over a health care policy if the United States.,'' Boehner said, and if the plan should pass, the next step for the GOP will be seeking its repeal. "If we get to that point, you can bet on it.
"But all my attention and all my effort at this point is making sure this bill never, ever, ever becomes law,'' Boehner said. "And I think the American people are on our side. I think they've spoken loudly and clearly they want no part of this. And I think Democrats who vote for this do so at their own peril.''

Both sides have some good ideals there will be a great start towards healthcare reform. One of the problems is that the Republicans have made proposals that the Democrats will not even look at. They are a matter of public record on the website Open Congress. And it is just the size of this bill that scare people. And the Democrats make it sound like an entitlement program and the American people know how well the existing entitlement programs are working.

Americans are losing their homes, millions are out of work and commander-in-social reform still doesn't get it...nobody wants this stinking health care bill. Look at the polls panty waist, it's jobs and the economy all day long!

It's way past time for Obama and Dems to show some spine and ram this through. They are already paying the price for their detachment, while the tea party crackpots, Kooky Glenn others planted lies and misinformation.
The American people are not opposed to this bill. The Insurance lobby is, and so is Fox "news".

Congressman Boehner evidently believes that most Democratic Congressmen cannot be persuaded to oppose ObamaCare on the merits, but instead on their fears of re-election.
And he's correct.

OBUMMER AS AHAB . . .
Kneale: Obama as Ahab, Strapped to Moby Dick
-
So now it becomes clear: President Obama as Ahab, a political martyr wannabe who willfully straps himself to his own Moby Dick, that great white whale of a $1 trillion health-care overhaul.
-
My guess is that ObamaCare will pass (insert bone-wracking shudder here). And, like Moby Dick plunging to the ocean’s depths, it will take with it Obama’s presidency and the Democrats’ control of Congress.
-
But it isn't the Obama presidency I worry about. If he chooses to sink himself with this bloated whale, so be it. Great experiment, thanks for playing, see ya, Cap’n.
-
It is the future of our nation that worries me. We can't afford this healthcare facelift, even at its stated price, and the actual cost will prove to be manifold times higher than Congress projects.

Yo, Boehner. Our health care is 37th in the world. Even Costa Rica is 36th.
You and your republicans have been effective at misrepresenting the bill. Outright lieing, actually.
Any of the republican bloggers here, please show even one part of the bill that could even be remotely considered a "government takeover". Increased regulations that will reduce costs for all Americans is hardly a take over. We know for a fact that even most republicans are in favor of the part that would restrict insurance companies from denying based on "pre-existing conditions".

OK, I can hear this dog whistle loud and clear. The GOP is calling out their fringe members to perpetrate violence against Democrats. Why else would he use these words.

Yes, there are SOME individual aspects of whatever the bill is that Republicans, conservatives and other Americans want:
1. Portability.
2. No denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions.
Do that, and in the meantime tackle real issues that keep health care costs up, like:
1. Tort reform.
2. The need for greater competition across state lines,
3. Greater enactment of medical savings accounts and tax breaks for those who buy their insurance.
These things can be done WITHOUT being over 2,000 pages long, adding hundreds of billions to the deficit, taxing people more, giving out deals to this state and that union.
But it is Obama and the Dems desire to take over the health care system and to take over all American businesses. It is not their desire to do the right thing.

Maybe you could show the final bill. The dems don't seem too interested in sharing more than a few talking points and will attempt another midnight cram down that no one will have a chance to read.
As for taking over health care, it is really quite simple, create regulations that make it impossible for private insurance companies to make a profit, after all, the 100+ new goverment entities created to manage 1/6th of the economy will need something to do. Or, because libs are so compassionate, they can give employers a financial incentive to drop their funding of healthcare and shift their employees to a government sanction health plan. In another lib brainstorm, they can tax any non union, non government worker's insurance plan in support of the lib pipe dream of equality.
I'm sorry that you are so intellectually challenged that what is obvious to just about anyone that has lived through Nixon's price controls, Carter's rationing and the current liar in chiefs auto takeover escapes your feeble comprehension.

John D,
Tort reform is all well and good. I, too, would like to see a reduction in the "frivilous" lawsuits that sometimes occur in health care. But those who are legitimate victims of negligence by Dr's or other health care providers need to have protection and a way to receive justice.
I have not heard one specific idea from republicans on how they would make sure to protect those who were injured through the fault of a Dr.

It's possible. But he didn't say that and not all Democrats are up for re-election. Only 1/3rd are. He used a coded message. Maybe it wasn't as blunt as Right Wing Icon G. Gordon Liddy's instruction for his listeners to "take headshots" at federal agents in his defense of known pedophile David Koresh but the unhinged will know that Boehner wants anyone who votes for this to be afraid, look over you shoulder because someone is gunna git you. Perhaps someone who would act like HAMAS and bring guns to a political rally, like TeaBaggers. We already know these folks like to shoot police officers, storm liberal churches, assault Holocaust museums and crash planes into the IRS.

Tort Reform? Most lawsuits are filed in state courts. There are very few federal malpractice suits filed, so that any "reform" included in the congressional bill would have little or no affect on the cost of health care. Or are the libs now also trying to take control of state courts?

Here is the lowball estimate on savings if tort reform is done; $200 billion a year in savings on the practice of defensive medicine. But you sounding like a liberal that does not mean anything. And if you do not thank the feds can say what happens at the state level you are sadly mistaken. Because using your argument they cannot touch the insurance industry either then because they are regulated at the state level. Try to keep up with the adults.

I would agree that we cannot remove the option of patients being able to sue a bad doctor. One thing that should be available to all patients is a way to check on a doctor's past history. Checking to see if they have lost any lawsuits brought against them. We cannot include settlements that take place outside of the courthouse unless there is evidence by the medical board showing that Dr. was wrong. I believe the patient should also be able to find out if a doctor's license was suspended and the reason for the suspension. I also believe if a patient brings a bogus lawsuit against the doctor or a hospital and the patient loses the case they should pay all legal expenses incurred by that Dr. or hospital. When it comes to elective surgery there should be a video statement by which the patient knows that this is a non-life-threatening procedure and the risk involved. An example is if a woman decides to get breast implants and is told what the dangers are she should not be able to come back and sue the doctor, hospital, or manufacture if something out of their control goes wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for torte reform if it would actually work,
BUT,
Making it work would actually require the malpractice insurance industry to actually lower their rates,
AND,
It would require the doctors to then take those savings and reduce their wages,
So, if you pugs really think that will happen in a corrupt capitalstic society, then I got some snow I'd like to sell you too. You see, it's a special snow, because it was made with holy water, and it has special powers. It will make your bean stalks grow really tall.....flunkin twits.
Posted by: Xcellentform | March 13, 2010 9:40 AM
NonXcellentForm, tort reform DOES work and is working well in places like Texas. There, malpractice insurance claims are lower and health care costs have done down as well.
There is no doubting that many doctors order excessive testing to cover their butts.
No one is saying is tort reform is the only cure, but it has to be a part of the cure.
ObimboCare is no cure, it will just make the problems even worse.
Posted by: John D | March 13, 2010 2:34 PM
If this bill is passed in its will never make it through the court system. 34 State Attorney Generals are waiting in the wings to file lawsuits once the president signs the bill. But before the case even makes it out of the courts the Democrats will most likely no longer control the Senate, the House of Representatives, or the White House. And if you loony liberals do not think it can happen then you know nothing about American political history and what happens when a party goes against the will of the people. If you think that 1994 was a smack down of the Democrats let this bill pass and you will really see a smack down. It may even be as bad as the 1850s and the start of the 1860s.
Posted by: Crooks_In_DC | March 13, 2010 11:22 PM
Crooks in D.C., in what way can the feds control what happens in state courts? If states want to control how damages are awarded in their court systems, fine with me, but the feds have no right to try. Again, most lawsuits are brought in state courts, so that any "tort reform" in federal legislation would have negligible affect on health costs.

The loss of jobs which started in the previous 4 years is the very reason that it is so important to have a Health Care bill that will help those unfortunate people that have lost their health care. It is a little bit like a Catch-22 but at least President Obama is trying to do "Something" to help people. Unlike the Repukers who only know the word NO, except when it comes to making rich people richer. They care nothing but about themselves, such hypocrites, if they are against all Government then have their Mom/Dad/GrandParents all give their SS check back and let them do the supporting. Naw, they are rich and will not even take care of their own. Total scumbags!
