There is an old saw that says, if everyone is angry at us, then we must be doing something right.
That's what Rep. Bart Stupak is saying today, on FOX.
Stupak, the Democrat from Northern Michigan who managed to insert anti-abortion language into the first House healthcare bill and finally aquiesced to no added measure in the Senate-passed bill which the House approved on Sunday -- a bill which observers agree does nothing to take away from or add to abortion right -- said today that he's hearng criticism from both sides.
The executive order which the Obama White House agreed to produce on Sunday stating that the healthcare legislation will not entitle anyone to federal funding for an elective abortion -- which is the current state of law under the Hyde amendment -- did not mollify hardliners who denounced the order on the House floor as "a piece of paper'' with no force of law. It also drew criticism from the Center for Reproductive Rights, which contends that the White House now has "imported'' the Hyde amendment into an executive order, not what pro-choice activists had in mind for this White House.
But it satisfied Stupak and several others enough to vote for the bill, which, after all, was passed by a dulled razor-thin margin of 219 to 212, with only three votes to spare.
It turns out now that there may be something more to Stupak's observation. A new poll released by CNN and Opinion Research Corp. today shows that, indeed most people say they are opposed to the healthcare legislation which the House and Senate are producing -- the Senate still must act on a package of changes which the House approved on Sunday, traveling under a separate "reconciliation billl.''
But look beneath the overall results of 59 percent telling CNN's pollster that they oppose the final healthcare legislation -- with just 39 percent saying they favor it -- and there is another set of numbers: Among those who oppose it, 13 percent say it is "not liberal enough." Another "43 percent say it is too liberal."
So, if a little more than one in 10 of the six in ten who oppose the bill call it not liberal enough, that works out to something close to an even split between people who simply oppose the bill and people who either support it or wish it went further. That may not be a bad playing field on which the president hopes to convince the public that the bill which he is prepared to sign on Tuesday isn't as bad as critics have made it out to be.
The CNN survey of 1,030 adults run March 19-21 carres a 3 point margin of error.
"It obviously must be a good piece of legislation if both sides are made at you,'' Stupak said in an appearance today on FOX News Channel's America Live with Megyn Kelly -- his take on both abortion rights and anti-abortion activists angered by the order.
.
"I would just say to Susan B. Anthony they can give their Defender of Life award to whoever they choose,'' he said. "I did not do it to win an award; I did it because I stood for the principle to protect the sanctity of life. I've done that... If I would have followed Susan B. Anthony's way it wouldn't have worked."
The executive order, he maintains "is worth more than the paper it is written on... History shows us that an executive order has the whole force of law. It is just as good as having a law,'' Stupak said. "Would I have liked to have had a law... absolutely."
"The only option you had was leave the Senate language or strengthen it to prevent abortions under an executive order -- that's what we did, we stayed true to those principles -- or vote no.,'' he said. "So you kill the bill and we do not have health care... I've always said I want to see health care for the nation.''
The law is just as vulnerable as any executive order to revison, he notes: "Whether it's an executive order or a statute, the next Congress or even this Congress can overturn a law in the next six months." (Republicans are already talkng about repeal.)

Someone needs to call the guys in the White Coats. The Wingnuts need to be put on suicide watch today.
I hope as many people as possible get a chance to view this video from the Republican Teabaggers protest this past weekend.
This is what happens when right wing astorturf (Teabaggerss) meets reality.

In short, this article is just another way for the DNC Swamp to feature the comments of yet another Dem ObamaCare supporter.
And yes,Stupak sold--or rather, rented--his "principles" to a White House more than willing to pay any price--in our dollars, not theirs--to pass this legislation against the will of the people.

Normally I can read democrats. They are not that clever. This guy, though, totally had me fooled. Kudos to him.
Whatever nice bribe that Bart Stupak got, was more than anything that Gene Green - Tx, 29th District, was able to cart off. Some congressional district in the Bay Area actually has TWO congresspersons. What a country.

You can always depend on some idiot Republican from Texas to act like a petualnt five year old when they don't get their way, it never fails.
Baby Killer" Shout Came From Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Lubbock, Texas
"Rep. Randy Neugebauer, a Lubbock Republican, has fessed up to shouting "Baby Killer!" at Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., during the health care debate last night."
"His office has just issued a statement saying he regrets the remark and has apologized directly to Stupak"

Poser Terry,
That proves nothing more than it's a good health care bill that will help average people. If the Wall Street robber barons that you cheerlead for liked it I'd know it was a bad bill.

The GOP tried to manipulate Bart Stupak and it blew up in their faces.
To the GOP hypocrites, they and they, alone, decide who is truly pro-life and it's simply put:
must be a card-carrying member of the RNC and vote as they are told to vote.
If the GOP were at all " pro-life"
as they claim, they would not have turned on Bart Stupak like a bunch of ravenous wolves. They also would have come up with a healthcare reform bill of their own while they were in charge but they did not. To them, life begins at conception and ends at birth. After that, lotsa luck.
Where was Phyllis Schlafley while the RNC was paying for employees abortion coverage?
Typical party over principle mentality and they showed it last night.

"There is an old saw that says, if everyone is angry at us, then we must be doing something right."
The actual quote, which was originally attributed to the brilliant filmmaker Orson Welles, goes:
"When you piss people off in the theatre, you know you're doing something right."
Steven Spielberg paraphrased the quote a few years ago when both the Israelies and Palestinians criticized his film "Munich".

Reid promises public option vote 'in the coming months'
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) promised two Democratic senators this week a Senate vote on the public option "in the coming months."
In a letter to Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), the top Senate Democrat said he was committed to pursuing the controversial public insurance option later this year.
"Like you, I remain committed to pursuing the public option," Reid wrote in a letter dated Thursday, which was obtained and published by the Huffington Post. "As we have discussed, I will work to ensure that we are able to vote on the public option in the coming months."

Trickled On HoHoHo,
Economically Challenged Still and Always Writing Wrong, you might as well pay attention also.
Pay attention you financial dunces. If a bond trades at a yield higher than another bond of the same duartion, then it is considered riskier. The financial markets, by placing a higher yield on a US Treasury than Bershire-Hathaway is saying there is a greater risk of default with the U.S. gov't.
Even Lowes had a lower yield. Imagine that, a company tied to the American hosuing industry is considered a lower risk than the U.S. gov't.

More copy and paste right wing garbage from a person (Bobby's Mommy), who like most Wingnuts, couldn't come up with an independent thought if her life depended on it.
Death panels and dead grandmas didn't work for the Republican mouth breathers (see Bobby's Mommy above) so now their focus has shifted from "kill the bill" to "repeal it":
Hey Wingnuts! Exactly what do you want to repeal first?
Not discriminating against children with pre-existing conditions?
Allowing children to stay on their parents insurance until they're 26?
Insurance companies not being allowed to drop you if you get sick or capping the amount they'll pay if you have a catastrophic illness?
Which ones are Republicans against?
In other words, Bring It On!

If the Wall Street robber barons that you bow down to and their Republican backers in congress don't like something, it's always good news for the American middle-class.

I'm curious. where's John D who predicted this would never happen? Oh ya, packing his bags getting ready to move to, hmmm where could he possibly go that doesnt already offer healthcare? Iraq/ Ooops no, the US already pays for that. Iran? Oh maybe. Have fun!

Django, I hate to break it to you, but there were probably another two dozen dem votes waiting in the wings if they needed them.
Yeah, and for the polls, I guess I am part of the 13% that think it should've gone MUCH farther than what they did. That said though, with only 42% strongly dissaproving....not bad considering all the pharma, insurance, and pug money that went into scaring the sheep.

Iv'e been calling this one for months.
Lots of the opposition is from THE LEFT not the right.
Now it's nightmare time for the Repubes;
FINANCIAL REFORM will be front and center. Now they get to defend the bankers and Wall St. in front of everybody.
And the T-Baggers will have to come out of the closet also. I can just see them protesting against the Dodd bill in favor of Goldman Sachs and BA and WF et al.
They, the TBs and the Repugs, wanted HCR to drag out all summer so they could concentrate their lies on it, not have to side with the engineers of the '08 financial meltdown in public. Now they gotta!
Hilarious.

fabBRUCEation!! Well what rock did you crawl out from? Either you are the old bruce that fabricated links and statements to make points, or you are a newby that picked a REALLY unfortunate name to post with. I'll assume it's fabrucation, and when pugs fabricate stories, it makes it hard to have civil discussions with them. When pugs refute facts...makes it a tad hard too to talk. Did you hear Boner shouting last night and accusing? Great conversation skills those pugs have.

Timmy Green, I had posted earlier today about this being another puff piece and something that could have been written by Axelrod, Gibbs or Emanuel with all the spinning that Silva did, but it was censored.
When the author headlines this that half of the country does not like the health care reform because of the "numbers," when the reality is nearly 6 in 10 are against it, well that is spinning.
The Swamp doesa not believe in the First Amendment, nor does it believe in honest and fair journalism. It does believe in boasting the Far Left agenda.

Crying Wingnut,
Let's see here - you've got yourself a real toughguy sounding post name like: "Free to Watch Liberals Meltdown", and yet you're on here whining that the Dems are being big meanies? hahaha!

Xcellentform,
I know the game. I know that the democrats had this thing wired all the way. They only needed 216 votes but that may have cut it a little close. So the real target was 217. But who were those additional 2 sacrificial sheep that are now on record as supporting this 2700+ pages of socialist crap?
My surprise was that this guy seemed SO sincere about opposing the expansion and taxpayer financing of abortions. You probably don’t watch Fox News, but the Congressman was on Fox several times during the past week stating his ADAMANT objections to this 2700+ pages of socialist crap. I can usually recognize fraud and deceit when I see it, but he got over on me. Kudos to him.
I have also mis-read my Catholic brethren. How can even one true Catholic support this? Yet, some organization of Nuns did. How can one doctor or even one nurse support this? I am losing my political sense of who, or what, is or can be, a suitable dupe.
Xcellentform, here is something good that I DO owe a small debt of gratitude to the Socialists of the democrat party. Since the anti-energy wing of the democrat party has been xtremely successful in destroying Energy related jobs, I have had to earn a significantly more austere living in Math World. With more down time, my melody-voice leading skills with the guitar is finding some really nice sweet spots. It’s not unlike the special magic of pretty Latinas. Me and pL Jessica Biel Lite are going to bring a little visual and audio ambience to one of those socialist libraries that the socialists just erected down the street here with the confiscated tax dollars that they have collected year after year. Just hope that they used some Republican steel and lumber. Which do I grab first ~ Pretty Latina Jessica Biel Lite, or my Martin guitar, if the damn thing catches on fire or goes into structural failure mode.
Stupak surprised me, none of the other democrats did. They do what they very predictably do. Gene Green, 29th Tx, however, did not seem to get any kind of treat. How fair is that?

From the same CNN poll, but unmentioned above, are some poll numbers the White House and its media allies want hidden:
"In addition, 56 percent said the bill gives the government too much involvement in health care; 28 percent said it gives the government the proper role and 16 percent said it leaves Washington with an inadequate role.
On the question of costs, 62 percent said the bill increases the amount of money they personally spend on health care; 21 percent said their costs would remain the same and 16 percent said they would decrease.
The poll's results about the bill's fiscal impact were particularly stark: 70 percent of respondents said they believed deficits would go up because of the bill; 17 percent felt they would stay the same and 12 percent said they would go down."

HEY SILVA, DON'T LIKE CNN POLLS, OR JUST THIS ONE?
-
A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll found that 59 percent of those surveyed opposed the bill, and 39 percent favored it. All of the interviews were conducted before the House voted Sunday night, but the contents of the bill were widely known.
-
In addition, 56 percent said the bill gives the government too much involvement in health care; 28 percent said it gives the government the proper role and 16 percent said it leaves Washington with an inadequate role.
-
On the question of costs, 62 percent said the bill increases the amount of money they personally spend on health care; 21 percent said their costs would remain the same and 16 percent said they would decrease.
(Silva: Read more carefully, that's the poll that this post is all about, thanks.)

OOOPS I MISSED THIS CREATIVE ZIG ZAG THAT PAVED THE WAY FOR YOUR DELIBERATELY MISLEADING HEADLINE:
So, if a little more than one in 10 of the six in ten who oppose the bill call it not liberal enough, that works out to something close to an even split between people who simply oppose the bill and people who either support it or wish it went further. That may not be a bad playing field on which the president hopes to convince the public that the bill which he is prepared to sign on Tuesday isn't as bad as critics have made it out to be.
