The Swamp

by Mark Silva and updated Sunday morning

There was quite a scene outside the Capitol today, where the House was embroiled in debate over passage of a healthcare bill that President Barack Obama is demanding.

Protesters amassed, and some of them spawned some ugly rhetoric.

Our good friend and colleague Bill Douglas of McClatchy Newspapers reports today on the sentiments that some Southern black Democrats heard outside of the Capitol -- words more reminiscent of their struggles in the 1960's. The venom of the crowd was not limited to racism.

Already, some are rushing to deny that any of this happened, declaring that the absence of a videotape confirming it suggests that someone is lying. That standard of proof would reduce us all to getting our news from YouTube. The House Majority Leader, Steny Hoyer, had something to say about the incident last night -- see his comments below, after Douglas' account for McClatchy, a reliable source:

WASHINGTON -- Demonstrators outside the U.S. Capitol, angry over the proposed health care bill, shouted "nigger" Saturday at U.S. Rep. John Lewis, a Georgia congressman and civil rights icon who was nearly beaten to death during an Alabama march in the 1960s.

The protesters also shouted obscenities at other members of the Congressional Black Caucus, lawmakers said.

"They were shouting, sort of harassing," Lewis said. "But, it's okay, I've faced this before. It reminded me of the 60s. It was a lot of downright hate and anger and people being downright mean."

Lewis said he was leaving the Cannon office building to walk to the Capitol to vote when protesters shouted "Kill the bill, kill the bill," Lewis said.

"I said 'I'm for the bill, I support the bill, I'm voting for the bill'," Lewis said.

A colleague who was accompanying Lewis said people in the crowd responded by saying "Kill the bill, then the n-word."

"It surprised me that people are so mean and we can't engage in a civil dialogue and debate," Lewis said.

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., said he was a few yards behind Lewis and distinctly heard "nigger."

"It was a chorus," Cleaver said. "In a way, I feel sorry for those people who are doing this nasty stuff - they're being whipped up. I decided I wouldn't be angry with any of them."

Protestors also used a slur as they confronted Rep. Barney Frank ( D-Mass), an openly gay member of Congress. A writer for Huffington Post said the crowd called Frank a "faggot."

Frank told the Boston Globe that the incident happened as he was walking from the Longworth office building to the Rayburn office building, both a short distance from the Capitol. Frank said the crowd consisted of a couple of hundred of people and that they referred to him as 'homo.'

"I'm disappointed with the unwillingness to be civil," Frank told the Globe. "I was, I guess, surprised by the rancor. What it means is obviously the health care bill is proxy for a lot of other sentiments, some of which are perfectly reasonable, but some of which are not."

"People out there today, on the whole, were really hateful," Frank said. "The leaders of this movement have a responsibility to speak out more."

Douglas' report continues:

Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the Capitol on Saturday as the House Democratic leadership worked to gather enough votes to enact a health care overhaul proposal that has become the centerpiece of President Barack Obama's domestic agenda. Most were affiliated with so-called tea party organizations that originally sprang up during last summer's protests of the health care proposals.

Heated debate has surrounded what role race plays in the motivations of the tea party demonstrators. During protests last summer, demonstrators displayed a poster depicting Obama as an African witch doctor complete with headdress, above the words "OBAMACARE coming to a clinic near you." Former President Jimmy Carter asserted in September that racism was a major factor behind the hostility that Obama's proposals had faced.

The claim brought angry rebuttals from Republicans. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, who is black, accused Carter of playing the "race card."

On Saturday, Frank, however, said he was sorry Republican leaders didn't do more to disown the protesters.

Some Republicans "think they are benefiting from this rancor," he said.

House Majority Whip James Clyburn, D-S.C., said Saturday's ugliness underscored for him that the health care overhaul isn't the only motivation for many protesters.

"I heard people saying things today I've not heard since March 15th, 1960, when I was marching to try and get off the back of the bus," Clyburn said. "This is incredible, shocking to me."

He added, "A lot of us have said for a long time that none of this is about healthcare at all. It's about extending a basic fundamental right to people who are less powerful."

This is the statement that Hoyer' (D-Md.) released:

"Today's protests against health insurance reform saw a rash of despicable, inflammatory behavior, much of it directed at minority Members of Congress. According to reports, anti-reform protestors spat on Rep. Emmanuel Cleaver, yelled a sexual slur at Rep. Barney Frank, and addressed my dear friend, Rep. John Lewis, with a racial slur that he has sadly heard far too many times.

"On the one hand, I am saddened that America's debate on health care--which could have been a national conversation of substance and respect--has degenerated to the point of such anger and incivility. But on the other, I know that every step toward a more just America has aroused similar hate in its own time; and I know that John Lewis, a hero of the civil rights movement, has learned to wear the worst slurs as a badge of honor.

"America always has room for open and spirited debate, and the hateful actions of some should not cast doubt on the good motives of the majority, on both sides of this argument. But Members of Congress and opinion leaders ought to come to terms with their responsibility for inciting the tone and actions we saw today. A debate that began with false fears of forced euthanasia has ended in a truly ugly scene. It is incumbent on all of us to do better next time."

People are mad & do not want a government takeover of healthcare system. And if you think they are upset now just wait & see what happens if this backdoor trash of a bill passes.
You can call them racist, tea-baggers, stupid, mindless or whatever. These are the people that will gather in numbers with one goal in November. That goal will be to vote out as many Democrats as possible that voted yes to this bill. Too bad Durbin's number is not up this year. But I can wait another 2 years to watch him & Obama both get sent packing at the same time. Then they can join Sarah Palin writing bad books. Oh yeah Obama already wrote a very boring book already.
Durbin can go make commercials for Southwest Airlines since the bags under his eyes will fly for free.

Where are the UToob clips?

If this is true, those clips will sink the Replicans.

There is no indication in the article that any neutral person heard the alleged comments. Could it be that the Democrats allegedly targeted are playing their usual race card? It would be good if the media would seek some independent corroboration prior to rushing into print. If true, it should be condemned. If the Democrats are making it up, shame on them.

Words are just that WORDS. Where is the proof that this happened? Libs have been using the race card on anyone who does not low the lib line. The libs have become The Boy Who Cried Wolf when it comes to race. Show the proof or you're just a yellow dog.

Where's the video. These days there's always someone with a camera. If there's no video, no proof, then it is likely all a lie.

Yep, sounds like the Palin/Beck base.

Ugly rhetoric, indeed.
From the Democrats. And their media buddies.
As they play their rather shopworn "race" card, feeding lines to a sympathetic journalist whose idea of covering a protest march is to repeat rants by politicians who hate the marchers.

This article reminds me of a sign carried by a Tea Party Protester: "It doesn't matter what my sign says, the media will call it racist"

This behavior is deplorable. Unfortunately, these people will now, for Mark Silva and the rest of the media, represent the people who object to the health care bill. The vast majority of people who object to the health care bill are not using racial and homosexual slurs. But the media doesn't cover them . Amazing that the other 24,999 people there got no coverage.

Yep, showing their true stripes aren't they? The Tea Party goof balls are nothing more than the new KKK. I hope Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, and Rush Limbaugh are proud.

Yup any of yall that dont be agreeins with Barry are all Racism. Shoot I been knowin that for a long time

Blogs are reporting that the ONE person was detained by DC police but the congressmna declined to press charges. The blogs also say that when he yelled racist slurs, others told him to stop.

So.... is that what it takes to get the media to cover these protests? Or was the guy a plant to make the protests look bad?

Why won't the media cover the other 24,999 people who were there to protest this health care bill?

You know what? I don't believe a word of this. I do not believe anyone from the Black Congressional Caucus was called the "n" word nor do I believe that Barney Frank was called a faggot. I think it was all made up by the folks on the Left to try and cast dispersions on anyone who is against this health care sham. The media has proven over and over they cannot be trusted for the truth and I would never take the word of anyone from the Huffington Post. Let's see the proof in video.

The left has worked very hard trying to make the tea parties into the KKK so far. Most of thier versions of things turn out to be lies when the videotape is reviewed. So I'll wait to see the evidence again this time too.

But how about the condescenence of lawmakers who "feel sorry" for citizens who have taken the time to go to DC and face these congressmen? That's what's obscene here. Congress' attitide of "we know best so sit down and shut up" is the real outrage." Any member of Congress who actually wants to know why people are angry, please see Hasting's remarks about making up the rules as they go along.

And spare us your feigned surprise.

And thus the media will portary millions of people by the actions of a few. Nice job with the broad brush.

Let's hold our noses as we pass the Republican-Libertarian-T.Baggers' small tent. They have lied this country into a frenzy. They have tried character-assassinated many a good American and for what? To save this nation, to help this nation, even to show a little compassion for those not so well-off !!? No, for that 5-lettered word in the room: GREED.
Sick people, young and old, are being deprived of quality healthcare because the Greedy Healthcare Insurers are rationing, if not, denying, medical attention to the neediest in our nation. The Healthcare Corps' bought and paid for supporters, not to mention the delusional ideologue, who squats in his/her ivory tower, drowning out reason with their pontificating, and to what does their pontifications amount? Simply lies, distortions, name-calling and more lying !! That is it.
Now, America must deal with the unfortunate consequences of their unamerican devices. She must deal with the hate, the venom, the distrust that these mental midgets have unleash across the land !! For what? To deny President Obama and his administration a victory for all of the people of America, a victory for the sick people of our nation, for our elderly, for our young, just to name a few, several million. They have polluted the waters of our national politics with their stinking emotionalism, their incitements, their stupid strategy, but in the end, Healthcare will be reformed and all of you Republican-Libertarian-T.Baggers will be stuck with your bile, your venom and, of course, your Greed. I don't think that will give any of you, much comfort in the coming weeks and months. You have tried to damage our good nation, with your selfish and mean-spirited schemes. May God have mercy on all of you !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

You pugs make me sick. Really, you have no idea of communication. Of course I believe it was said. If a tree falls in the woods, and it was not video taped, did it really fall pugs? I guess before the time of the video camera, nothing ever really happened at all, since it can not now be proven!!!

I've been called a sponge by teri; incapable of doing good (because I am not a christian) by johny w, and I'm sure other great things by just the pugs on this board. You pugs just have no social coping skills to use when someone doesn't agree with you. It is in your nature to use force, power, and fear to advance your points.

"I'm disappointed with the unwillingness to be civil," Frank told the Globe.

Spare us the decorum and refer to these rednecks by the white trash label they've so fittingly earned. No other group--be it Latino, Black or Asian--has consistently proven itself to be a national and international disgrace like the white scum who make up the GOP.

So to disagree with Barry the liar is now racist. As Orwell has said. "News speak" is here. It is being propagated by the 5th column of the sycophants of the media.

"Diane", with Barney Frank the self-proclaimed defender of "civility", calls Republicans "rednecks", "a disgrace", "trash" and "scum."

It's easy to see who ISN'T civil here--"Diane" and her ilk.
Such behavior is despicable. They make me ashamed to be an American.

You can call them racist, tea-baggers, stupid, mindless or whatever.

I'll just call them unAmerican lowlife gutter trash. I'm glad you're proud!

The truth hurts, doesn't it? The fact that you've repeatedly chosen not to rebuke the relentless stream of GOP filth that's seeped from the most fringe redneck elements of your party says all we need to know about you as well.

I'd like to thank the congressmen for taking this crap -- John Lewis, in particular, has taken a lifetime of it.

I'd like to thank Mark Silva too, for taking this crap. No sense waiting for retractions (especially now that the video has been posted) from the clueless. They must all be in church today, praying extra hard.

There is an abundance of ignorance with both supporters and opponents of this forced health insurance bill, but it is hard to match the news coverage that the "n" word or spitting on a black man can generate. The only question that remains is who was behind it, those looking to debase the credibility of the opponents of this bill or those protesting the bill's legality and wisdom? Jesus taught us how to fight with peace, scripture, prayer and honoring others above ourselves. Then there is no place for the opposition to debase legitimate criticism of an unconstitutional bill.

Objection to this forced health insurance bill deceitfully called Health Care Reform is more than about abortion or even the cost; the whole bill is against freedom, our Constitution and faith in the power of God.

Forced insurance is not freedom. America is the home of the brave (? fear catastrophic disease?, having a form of godliness but denying the power thereof?) land of the free (insisting on forced insurance?). God shed His grace on thee (You are saved by faith in God's word and His promises, not by your good works.) And crown thy good with brotherhood (voluntarily helping those in need, no insurance, no insurance needed.)

After this mandatory insurance vote, will America be beautiful, brave, free, and crowned with the blessings due to a people who truly believe in the power of God? Or will we be a land enslaved to pay insurances and medical bills because we live in fear? True freedom requires freedom. True independence requires independence.

I am not ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation. (Being saved from enslavement to pay forced insurance payments, control over all aspects of our life and saved from perpetual bondage.)

Free, voluntary, or forced, insurance will not be a part of my life. Come out from among them, be not conformed to the world, Fear Not. (God means what He says; it is our protection.) Faith requires truth and action.

Thank you, "Diane" for confirming what I pointed out about how uncivil the Left is.
And coming up with new vitriol: "relentless stream of ... filth"
I feel sorry for you....

Woah! Now you just hold on there, pardner. I never said you were incapable of doing good things because you weren't a Christian. I happen to keep copies of all my posts, just for occasions like this. I finished looking through all of our exchanges, and your false allegations don’t find any support in them. Your statement is merely a conclusion based upon your own misperception of what I said.
.
As of late, I am beginning to doubt your ability to reason or discern reality. You are the one that thinks the government should offer all the necessities of life - as a matter of right - and, simultaneously, bemoan the fact the U.S. is already at its financial tipping point. I guess you can't see how continuing with the former is bound to negatively impact the latter. That is what is typical of folks like you. One half of your brain fails to communicate with the other half. It’s either that or you believe the government is going down the tubes so we should all just have one big party. If that’s what you think, then you are certifiably nuts.
.
In addition, as I pointed out in a previous post, you tend to engage in specific point polemics rather than rationally express the truth. I pointed out the flawed methodology you used to blame “pugs” (as you call them) for all the economic troubles. A rational response on your part would have been to attempt to logically refute what I said. But, of course, since you couldn’t refute my criticism of your methodology, and you had to stick to your mission (albeit not one from God), you personally attacked me instead. What you have said today is just one more instance, in an increasingly longer line of instances, of your partisan incoherence.

I love the Swamp censors! We have folks like Diane and NonXcellentform criticize those on the right for mean name calling, yet they call us teabagger, lowlife gutter trash, and earlier this week in the Swamp, the censors allowed Bobby Mobbie to be called Bowel Movement and Mommy's Booby.
And while that stuff gets posted, my posts pointing that cout repeatedly gets censored!
What a hoot! The First Amendment in action as dictated by the Swamp Censor Loons!

ABC just ran the video...

Posted by: giraffe | March 21, 2010 9:27 AM

Giraffe, I went on abcnews.com. I believe the video on their website could be the report you are referring to. Funny, though, while the report talks of the racial slurs and the spitting, still NO video. The congressman in question said he didn't want to file charges, but did point out the spitter to the police. However, the police arrested no one. It seems even if the congressman does not want to press charges, the alleged spitter would still get arrested for assault. So, if there were no arrests, where and who is the alleged spitter? Racial slurs are called hate crimes. Why no arrests if racial slurs and taunts were yelled?
Now, they did show a video of Barney Frank. Funny, though, the alleged yelling of "faggot" was bleeped. That bleep can be anything. And why is the "news" being bleeped?
Still waiting for ANY proof that slurs were yelled.
And, by the way, IF any slurs were yelled, and there is no proof, the Republicans, Michael Steele and TEA party organizers have all CONDEMNED any of the ALLEGED slurs (no proof though). Where is the proof??

The hatred and ignorance of some of the opponents to health care reform has been a sad spectacle.

First, the Pontius Pilate Republicans initiate wave after wave of misinformation (e.g., death panels, mandatory death counseling, complete government take-over of health care) and then are so very careful to wash their hands of the shameful results. Did everyone see tea partiers mocking the man with Parkinson's disease? See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmaKRwUoAIU. A wonderful example of citizen participation!

Another recent Republican mantra - health care is being rammed down our throats - even though the bill which results will be the product of over a year of debate and still favored by a majority of both houses of Congress. I thought our republican form of representative government was the best in the world- except this time I guess. So much for “American exceptionalism.”

And with all their babbling about how legislators should simply follow public opinion polls (which they admittedly have done a splendid job in molding), have all have those "true conservatives" forgotten the position of the great English conservative Edmund Burke who noted that a "representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays, instead of serving you, if he sacrifices it to your opinion.” I guess those mocking tea partiers prefer reading Sarah Palin.

Johnny D,

You're a class act.

Michael Steele even apologized for the bigotry on the morning talk shows. Maybe the spit on Rep. Cleaver should have been saved for you. Add it to your drool cup.

John D,

You complaining about name calling is hilarious. You have been posting insults here for a very long time. They certainly were not all censored. You complain about Silva, call him names, I've seen it all over and over. If some of them actually didn't make it, my guess is they were truly out of line. Perhaps you didn't follow the rules.

So let me see if I follow the TeaBagger talking points. They are denying something that Michael Steele and John Boehner have apologized for? TeaBaggers I implore you, I ask you. What are your leaders doing apologizing if these despicable acts never happened? Spin away. You're toast. Americans reject a party that encourages TeaBag scum to throw money at a Parkinson's sufferer (it's on video!!), and calls black Congressmen the n-word and gay legislator's fa**ots. Your TeaParty has ended just as it began. A Klan meeting. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Rush Limbaugh promises to leave the country if healthcare reform passes:

Lets hold him to his word. Good riddence and take Sean and Sarah with. You can send for Karl and Dick later.

Martin, Loony Left or the Worst Mankind Has to Offer hardly equates to Johnny Dougheypants, Bowel Movement, Mommy's Booby, etc. As far as calling Mark Silva names? What Corrupt Journalist?
As far as singling your ilk out as being sick, demented, deranged, etc., well the facts speak for themselves. Just look at all the nonsense your sick, demented, deranged ilk spew on a regular basis.
And, Janet, dear, as far as Michael Steele apologising for whatever slurs allegedly were said, he was basing that apology on media reports, which so far have not provided ONE bit of proof of any politician being spit on or called the "n" word. We're still waiting for proof.
As far as Charlie Rangel's word on that, sorry, but I refuse to take the word from one of Congress's most corrupt politicians, liars and crime lords ever.

not one single republicon voted for healthcare reform. this makes them the party of anti-healthcare reform.

the republicon party has become the haunt of nazi types and ignorant inbreeders and their leaders represent only the interests of multi-national corporations and war profiteers.
the r-cons have tried to hijack the tea party movement and IMHO succeeded to the point that it's not a populist movement. I am sure they began with good intentions, though I question where they've been since 2001.

There is a lot of work to be done here in America. The republicon party will work to prevent any real change that's necessary. I am glad the dems finally grew *some* .

and the halocaust didn't happen either...did it Akmed dinnerjacket? Some are just so twisted with thier ideology

John D,

Yes, it is a joke that you post about the name calling. I find a great difference in distorting a name to Mommy's Booby, and calling someone a sponge on society. You see, one is clearly a joke and one is clearly a personal attack. My rebuttle to your post calling me that was blocked. I could come on here and whine, but I figured it was best to have your text speak for itself.

John W.,

You said it, and either you are now a liar or your reading skills are failing. Of course, lying and covering facts up are also part of the pugs tool kit. John, maybe the struggle that I am currently having is that I am living in Canada, and am experiencing all these "evil", "socialized","freedom killing", "over-taxed", "nazi", experiments actually work. And not just work, but work well. Meanwhile, while this system up here is excelling, I've watched your dogma fail, and fail badly. I have always stated my Independence on this board, but right now, the pugs are getting lashes for the decades of abuse they performed. It all too similarly resembles the Catholic church's pedaphille cover-up. There's a lot of angry people and not a lot of answers.

Good luck with those smoke and mirrors pugs. Your manipulation of the stupid american is the only game you got now.

We're still waiting for proof.

You want the link to the video of TeaBaggers throwing money at and shouting in the face of a Parkinson's sufferer?????

Bring on the link, Janet!

Ok, Janet and the rest of the Tea-haters, I saw the video of the man with Parkinson's. First of all, 30 seconds of video does not tell the full story. We don't know what took place beforehand. Having said that, if it were me, I would not have yelled at him or belittled him. However, a good friend of mine's dad has Parkinson's. He is recently retired. While working, though, he was covered by his insurance at work.
If someone is destitute, MOST people have no problem with some kind of government assistance. But this country and many states are going bankrupt trying to be all things to all people.
By the way, Loons, the Republican proposals for TRUE health care reform would have addressed these issues without breaking the bank and without more and more government.

Johnny D,

You're (in your delusional dreams) an ethics expert, media expert, and now an evidentiary scholar.

Tell me, if you step in crap on a sidewalk, do you stick your nose in it to figure out what it is, then round up all the dogs in the neighborhood, or do you wipe your shoe and move on?

The spit and slurs have flown -- move on (everyone else has).

Another thing the loony liberals in Congress are not telling the people is about the tens of billions of dollars it is going to cost each state every year because of this healthcare bill. California alone it will cost them over $20 billion a year in Illinois over $11 billion. Everybody get ready for your taxes to go up.

.
I have an archive of my posts. I would be more than happy to admit my mistake if you can fork up the post where I said that you were evil because you weren't a Christian. Until you do (and I'm not holding my breath because it just ain't there) I will stick to my belief that you are becoming more and more delusional and more interested in political recriminations than the truth.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it (if there is any room left).

John, not only did you loose again, you also gave me a great reason to shed some light on an old evil post of yours. I dusted off the mothballs just for you....hehemm....and I quote

Dear Excellentform,

"As a former theist, you know that theists adhere to the belief that morality or goodness can only come from following God’s will."

Faithfully Yours,

You babbled this just about a year ago on this topic http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2009/05/man_created_god_busad_campaign.html

John, you're not a pug huh? Who did you vote for in the last 8 presidental elections? Let me get you started.....raygun, raygun, bush, bush, dole.....

Just because you saw the corruption in the pug party and now claim to be a Libertarian, doesn't mean that you won't hold your nose and vote for them. You are no different than the teabaggers (if you're not already one).....just a bunch of pugs that are mad at their own party.

I'm not at all suprised that you archive your own posts. You know, once upon a time, I used to geek out too and copy my posts from Word, but then I just started letting things fly off the handle around here.

John, smoking your posts reminds me of lighting a brown-paper-bag on the porch and knocking on the door. Has about the same smell too.

You win the award for the most disingenuous, twisted and false post of the decade, hands down.
.
In the first place, the quote is jerked out of context. I was commenting on a proposed poster for a bus for an atheist message, NOT YOU.
.
In the second place, I said that “As a former theist, you know that theists adhere to the belief that morality or goodness can only come from following God’s will.” The word “Christian” isn’t in that sentence, and that is significant.
.
For example, are Jews Christians? No. Are they incapable of following God’s will? I will never make that claim. Are agnostics or atheists incapable of following God’s will. The Bible says that its Gods will for people to care for the poor, orphaned, and widowed; that they should love their children and honor their parents. Is there any possibility that atheists can’t do these things or haven’t done these things? I’m sure they have. Even Jesus said that heathen and sinners are capable of these things. There is a time when people struggle around in darkness and trouble before they come to Christ. Are they incapable of doing anything good? I would never say that either.
.
What you have done is falsely assumed that I equated “following God’s will” with being a Christian. That is an equation I have never made. I believe true Christians follow Gods will, but that does not exhaust the list of those who do.
.
This is just the latest example of how your unsound mind wrapped around one statement, blew it entirely out of proportion, jerked it out of context, and made it say something that it simply did not say. As far as I am concerned, your credibility and reputation for rational thought are dirt.
.
Not that it matters, but I also voted for Clinton and Barr, each in their turn. In the last election I did not hold my nose and vote for McCain, even though I knew that Obama would win if everyone thought as I did. I just believed in my heart that the Republican Party would have to change its ideas and put up much better candidates, even leaders for once, before I would ever cross party lines to vote for them again.
.
Yes, I believe you when you say that you let things fly. I think your sanity and capacity for rational thought have gone for a spin around the room. I am also glad I kept my archives, so that I could use them to refute liars like YOU.

Good god wonka, you really are starting to stink the place up again with all your BS.

A quote, by it's own deffinition, takes a selected amount of words out of a greater body of words. I could've included the whole babbling novel you wrote, but that would've bored the average reader to death.

You are absolutely correct....you said MUCH more on the topic, and when we add that to the quote that I posted, it only makes your arguement look weaker. Wonka writes: "...an ad for display on Bloomington City Transit busses that reads: “YOU CAN BE GOOD WITHOUT GOD.” As a former theist, you know that theists adhere to the belief that morality or goodness can only come from following God’s will. Thus, the message strikes at the very core of every theistic religion.".

It really does appear to be your last quoted sentence that is the downfall for your newly revised statments.

Let me translate that for you john, cause you obviously don't understand your own drivil: On the subject of "a human can do good without god", you say that christians believe that morality and goodness can only come from following jesus’s will. Thus, humans believing they can do good, without jesus, goes against the beliefs of christianity.

By logical extention, since you profess to being a christian, we can then insert your name everywhere we come accross the word christian/ theist in your statments.

Not only do you hold this belief, but I have seen it many times from other christians. Usually they don't write it out in as much detail as you have provided us.

It's clear for everyone here to read. Your judgments and interpretations johnny, not mine.

I'm glad you are sitting in a swivel chair johhny..... sit and spin away.

.
I am happy that you live in Canada and are studying French. I hope you are better at French than English. You ability to comprehend English stinks.
.
You accused me of saying you were incapable of doing good because you weren’t a Christian. The evidence you use to support this claim demonstrates the accusation was (and is) plainly false.
.
I made the statement in question in the context of a First Amendment analysis, to demonstrate how the local government in question would end up favoring atheism and expressing a non-neutral or hostile view toward theism if it allowed the ad to go on its busses. This was an answer to your claim that the ad wasn’t hostile toward theism. That is several steps away from saying anything about YOU. But I guess some people can’t help trying to make the world revolve around them.
.
You have returned to the false notion that I was making a reference to Christianity when I said “… theists adhere to the belief that morality or goodness can only come from following God’s will.” If I intended to say “Christianity” I would have said it, rather than the vague reference to “theists.” Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Druze, Christians, Zoroastrians, Mohists, deists, and millions of pantheists throughout the world are all theists. They all believe in the existence of at least one deity. They all believe that goodness comes from following god’s (or the gods’) will. So, really, the fact that you insist on interpreting my words to:
.
“… say that christians believe that morality and goodness can only come from following jesus’s will. Thus, humans believing they can do good, without jesus, goes against the beliefs of christianity”
.
just tells me you are stuck on stupid. You simply want to force your interpretation on the words, and your interpretation does not follows from the words I used.
.
This goes back to what I was saying about your inability to discern reality. You are attempting to force your version of reality on the external world. But, in any event, my words cannot be reasonably interpreted to say that I believe “YOU” are incapable of doing good because you aren’t a Christian. If I wanted to say that, I wouldn’t have beat around the bush. I would have simply said so. You should know that by now.

John, I will stand corrected if you publicly declare here that you are not a theist. If you do not, than I get to plug your name in your own quote.

Also, for you to come on here and not only represent all of chistianity, but now also claim that you are a scholar of all theastic religions is just plain laughable with your "They all believe that goodness comes from following god’s (or the gods’) will". That garbage comes primarily from christianity, but might also be included in a select few religions as well. Certainly not "all theastic religions" as you claim.

Here is one of the many bible quotes that led you astray: "There is none righteous, no, not one; there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one. Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips; whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. Their feet are swift to shed blood; destruction and misery are in their ways; and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes." (Romans 3:10-18)

Get a grip man, you were wrong when you first said it; you were wrong when you tried to cover it up and said it never existed; and you are now wrong by trying to play mister lawyer with your own words. You're throwing so many red hearings out in the water that I'm starting to wonder if your not a chum-er.

Like I said, I'll take it back if you are not a theist john....barring that, you've been proven wrong again.

Note to the Wacked Out Sickos:

Please use the ballot to vent your frustrations. Racial slurs and violence is not the answer. The ballot will enable you to vote out whoever displeases you. Trust me Barack and his family would rather be a one-term First Family than be victims of violent ignorant buffoons. Politicians and laws will come and go. A life comes along only once. Dirtbag pieces of garbage that you are.
