President Ronald Reagan was pictured reading briefing papers in the Oval Office in October 1988 by our friend Pete Souza, who was White House photographer then, and is now, in the Obama White House, and also served the Chicago Tribune well in Washington.
by Mark Silva
Move over Ulysses S. Grant (though the South tried this before.)
A North Carolina congressman has a new candidate for the face of the $50 bill: Ronald Reagan.
It's a Republican -- Rep. Patrick McHenry -- who has introduced the bill to replace the general who led the Union to victory in the (War Between the States) and led the nation as well with another more modern president, the late Californian and great communicator, Reagan.
(The Grant $50 note, like the rest of our paper currency, went through its own overhaul not long ago, with a new design and updated security features, pictured here by Alex Wong / Getty Images).
Reagan transformed the nation's political and economic thinking, the way McHenry sees it. He maintains that "every generation needs its own heroes."
He has 13 Republican co-sponsors.
Maybe, if President Barack Obama is still looking for a few Republican votes for that healthcare reform bill, he could throw the Reagan $50 on the table -- it's going to end up in a budget reconcilation act as it is. The North and the South reconciled some time ago, we've heard -- though going after Grant sounds somewhat inhospitable.
We're betting the Democrats will Stonewall this one.

I'm all for this -- just as long as they use a picture of Reagan sleeping through White House meetings with his top administration officials, something he did hundreds of times.

Posted by: Mike | March 3, 2010 11:15 AM
Grant was a early member of the American party, aka "The Knownothing Party"
The Knownothings were a collection of anti-foreign born, and anti-Catholic radicals.
As such he was an anti-Catholic bigot, and should never have been placed on our money.
This aside, Ronlad Reagan was one of our greatest presidents, and well merits the honor.

the nickle, the 50, mount rushmore....will the attempted deification of this mediocre president ever end? sure, he spoke up for conservative values, but if you look at his record, none of those values were actually put in place! he was a liberal before he realized he could get more votes being a conservative, and he began his political career by being placed as head of the screen actors guild by gangsters! those same gangsters who then helped him (and then he helped them) become gov. of cali. this is not a liberal rant. these are facts. anyone who thought RR is some kind of right-wing patron saint only needs to open a book that has been researched to see he's full of malarkey.

Posted by: Jim | March 3, 2010 11:44 AM
While I am not concerned that this bill has any momentum, it causes me great concern that 14 members of congress are preoccupying themselves with an unnecessary and certainly costly change to currency while issues of economic recovery, health care reform, and a myriad of other important issues go unresolved.
Posted by: A.M. | March 3, 2010 11:50 AM
Better choice - his sidekick Bonzo. At least he had some semblance of intelligence. And seemed to be conscious most of the time! Leave General Grant alone. His merits as a general and president far outweigh anything Reagan ever did. Gotta wonder what Nancy's psychic says? Certainly they already know the outcome. LOL

Posted by: Richard | March 3, 2010 11:56 AM
Reagan was the second-worst president we ever had ("W" gets the top spot).
He took phony credit for ending the Cold War. He tripled the national debt.
The only note Reagan should be on is a promissory note, he gave politcal cover to other Republicans (like W) to pile on more debt. "W" also lied about the debt by keeping Iraq and Afghanistan off the books.
Check the stats. From Carter to the presdent day, it's the Republicans who increase the debt far more than Democrats.
Posted by: eddie | March 3, 2010 11:59 AM
I would trade Reagan on the $50 for a robust public option.
Posted by: Orlando_Atheist | March 3, 2010 12:02 PM

Posted by: joe | March 3, 2010 12:03 PM
So let me get this straight. On the feels of Vietnam, Watergate, double digit inflation, and hostages in our embassy in Iran, some of you think Reagan led us down a path of destruction?? You're right. Ignore the 20+ years of economic prosperity and the collapse of the Soviet Union and blame him. I don't think we should change the $50 (as some have said either the $10 or the $100 since both have non-Presidents on them), but I'm guessing there are some on this site already ready for the Obama bill. Perhaps the billion dollar bill???

I remember an older latina woman's response when I asked her thoughts on Reagan, "Es el Anti-Cristo" (He is the Anti-Christ). His ability to cut funds for the most needy of our society was notorious. He was a B Actor and a C President. NC must not have any problems at all for this guy to spend OUR time on his personal nonsense. But hey whats to be expected from a NC Republican. Nonsense!
Posted by: Richard Arellano | March 3, 2010 12:08 PM
Absolutely not. U. S. Grant was a true patriot, a great general, and an American hero. Reagan was the king of deficit spending and the most overrated President in history. Reagan raised taxes numerous times and his policies benefited the rich and wealthy. Let's remember it was Reagan who sent unarmed U.S. Marines into a war zone in Beirut Lebanon then abruptly withdrew them after 250 were blown to pieces in October 1983. It was also Reagan who falsely claimed credit for the Soviet Union becoming dismantled.

If we are going to change on any bill make it the $20. Andrew Jackson was a traitor. The Supreme Court ruled the Cherokee could not be moved, and he said "The Supreme Court has made their decision, now let's see them enforce it." He violated the Constitution separation of powers! Traitor!

Posted by: Adam | March 3, 2010 12:17 PM
The "reagan revolution" acolytes are at it again. They managed to get an aircraft carrier and an airport named after the man while he was still alive.
Reagan sent the Marines to Lebanon, where they were slaughtered by a suicide bomber. He should have been impeached for Iran-Contra and ignored the Aids epidemic until it spread beyond the gay community. His constant mantra of deregulation culminated with the Wall Street and banking meltdown in 2008.
Was he likable? Sure. So was the captain of the Titanic.
Posted by: unionman | March 3, 2010 12:18 PM
I like Reagan and all, but I would rather see MLK Jr. on the $50 bill.
I don't think Grant deserves to be on the bill after all the coruption that happend under his watch as President.
Alexander Hamilton and Ben Franklin are other non-presidents that are on our paper money. They played important roles in American history and think they should remain on their respective bills.
I could see maybe putting Reagan on the quarter or penny since Washington and Lincoln are already represented on a bill.

Reagan opened the door to huge government spending, creating trillion-dollar deficits to be paid for by future generations. GWB took the government spending even further and threw away any pretense that he even cared, increasing our deficit more than double what he inherited. The Republican cult figure Reagan does not deserve to be on our currency.
Posted by: Dave | March 3, 2010 12:53 PM
Why not make a new denomination. A 40 dollar bill (as Reagan was the 40th President). Leave Grant on the fifty and make a new bill for Reagan...that is more fitting I believe.

Posted by: GK | March 3, 2010 12:57 PM
No surprise that the feckless Republicans support wasting millions of dollars to redesign sacred currency while hypocritically crowing about deficit spending. Then again, it makes perfect sense that the GOP would honor a man whose demented actions resulted in triple deficits and tax cuts for the wealthy, all of which led the U.S. down the perilous path it now finds itself on. If these GOP hillbillies took off their rose-colored glasses, they would realize that the only place Reagan's face belongs is on toilet paper.

@ John. The numbers don't bear out what you're saying but it would be interesting to talk about how Reagan got us out of a sluggish economy. He spent, spent, spent and when there was no more to spend, he spent some more.
Silly Republican deficit and stimulus hawks. Trix are for kids. Your own dear leader is no different then Obama or FDR. The only difference is who he favored (rich over the working class).

This is a waste of time and money. Do the Republicans realize how much it will cost to redo the $50 bill? The complain that the Democrats want to spend too much and are spending time on unimportant issues when the economy is in the dumps. And they come along with this proposal? Maybe later, when the nation is a little healthier. Until then, Senator, focus on what's important.

this is in reply to rance... dude have you read your recent history. RR is more responsible than any other single person for dismantling the soviet union. it was his policies of building up our military, bluffing with star wars and other high tech, using our superior economic system to outspend and out develop the USSR until they could no longer keep up while at the same time RR's policies of engaging the more moderate members of soviet leadership.
had we kept carter in office, my guess is that it would have been us that lost cold war. Reagan = peace through strength, Carter = conflict through weakness.

April 9th 1969...while speaking about legal protesting on the California State University campuses Reagan said..
IF it takes a BLOODBATH ( of STUDENTS blood) to get this thing over with then LET IT BEGIN..!
The ONLY President to openly call for the deaths of young people, by war or at his hand for protesting a war either way Ronnie want those kids DEAD at ANY expense. This is the guy who Republicans call their hero, the guy who wanted their kids deaths so he could prove his own level of conservatism. Too bad the mindless Bush-whacker and "bombs away" Cheney never realized Sadaam could have been taken down without firing a shot as well.
As far as his portrait on a bill, I agree, it is time to re-think Hamilton on the 10. But FDR would make more sense to promote to "currency status". He did get us out of the greatest economic catastrophe in history, and also won WWII.

In addition to being president of Americans for Tax Reform, Grover also founded “The Reagan Project.” Which is obsessed with getting schools, highways, bridges, airports, in every state in the Union named for doddering old RR.
I think Grover’s leadership in these right-wing groups is hilarious. These racist, women-hating, gay-bashing, half-wit clowns are paying a fortune to an openly gay man to do their dirty work. Grover is well known in the gay bars and bathhouses in DC (and Manhattan. And Cleveland. And Miami. And Settle. And Atlanta… you get the picture).

A totally preventable disease, prevented by a few smart lifestyle choices. Don't blame Reagan for your poor choice about who to get it on with. You could do a lot worse.
Like putting a Bush on the coin of the realm.
And I confess a soft spot for Ronnie because my aunt married his cousin (the "Wilson" part of Ronald Wilson Reagan).
However, it's a little early for canonization...
Unless you're a Franklin Roosevelt elected to 4 terms and killed in office by the stess of leading the US to ultimate victory in WW II.
FDR I could see on Mt. Rushmore.
But I think a few more decades need to go by before the verdict is in on Ronnie.
Though he's clearly the high point between Truman and of course Barack.
Barack will without doubt be on the currency eventually.
In a few decades.

I'm amused by the fools (even the few who know how to spell properly and can put coherent sentences together) who believe Reagan was a "great" president and therefore "deserves" to be put on currency. His deviousness and whacky economic policies dog us to this day. If there were a Reagan coin, his head could be on one side and a horse's ass on the other. Now THAT would strike a fiscal balance.

Unionman,
Just so you have some facts striaght - deregulation started before Reagan. As a matter of fact Carter (one of the few good economic acts he ever did) help push thru much of it.
Our country is much better off because of President Reagan. Many of you flatliners are spazzing because of a recession. The reason for that is you haven't lived thru a deep-long recession in the past 25 years. Thank you President Reagan.
The former countries of the Soviet Bloc thank you President Reagan now that they are free from the grips of communism. The people of Central America thank you for stopping the spread of communism in their countries also.
Best president in my half-century on this planet, by far.

Terry:
Fair enough. Carter did sign into law bills deregulating the railroads, trucking and the airline industry. However, I was referring to the financial markets. Although deregulation of the S&L's started near the end of the Carter administration, the Reagan administration fumbled the handoff during the early 80's, resulting in a 200 Billion dollar fiasco American taxpayers had to shoulder. It happened during Reagan's watch. Your canonization of the "Gipper" isn't going to fly.

Rance Spergl, Allen Kelson Marthastew and ballmerboy clearly never served in the military and obviously underestimate what Ronald Reagan and Margret Thatcher accomplished in Eastern Europe. Talk about a waste of time, let's talk about re-minting the penny . . . seriously what did that cost and WHY ?

Bobby Mobbie
You want to hear bigotry and hatred, tune into Buttface Beck,Weinerman Savage, and the bloated one- Limpbaugh. Get over it loser. Reagan was a fraud and a failure.
And, I can attest to the Reagan presidency as I was a college student during his corrupt administration.

Unionman,
That S & L crisis - you mean the one that created the failure of Madison Guaranty? and shafy land deals in Arkansas?
BM,
Doogie was in college? He should seek a refund.

Terry,
Revisit David Stockman's own assessment of Reaganomics as well as the opinion of the late Al Haig. Keep in mind that these were Reagan's own people, let alone the millions who were "trickled on."
Maybe it was a good thing he was asleep so much of the time.

KB,
I am familar with Stockman's and haig's assessments - I think they were wrong. The economy grew for 20 years after the Reagan Presidency becasue of his lowering tax rates down from a punitive 70%. Revenues to the Treasury nearly doubled in his 8 years. The Soviet Union fell because there wasn't a weak-kneed Jimmy carter in the Oval Office.
I'll stand by my statement that Reagan was not only best president in the past half century, but the best president of teh 20th century.

Terry:
You're out of Schlitz on your personal hero, so you're going to change the subject?
By the by; what's a "shafy" land deal?
I can't stop laughing.......

"I am familar with Stockman's and haig's assessments - I think they were wrong." --Terry
I didn't know you were closer to Reagan's inner circle than his HEAD OF THE OFFICE OF MANAGEMENT AND BUDGET and his SECRETARY OF STATE.
Delusional...

KB,
How many dozens of Reagan staffers would agree with my assessment?
Unionboy,
A "shafy" land deal is when you hit "d" on the keyborad instead of the "f" when typing the word "shady". Glad typos bring humor to your world.
Didn't change the subject at all.

GOD BLESS RONALD REAGAN!!
The exact opposite of the Socialist In Chief we have now.

Reagan changed the thinking in our country significantly. He got a young generation engaged politically. He is more related to our world today that an arsonist with a drinking problem from the 1800's.

Why do some people still like Reagan boggles my mind, the man was a loser! He is the number one reason why we are where we are in America today. The current man on the bill, Ulysses S. Grant, helped end the civil war, but he is a Republican, so we should not be surprised at his behavior! Reagan gave Fundamentalist Christian Extremists a voice in Washington, and he lowered taxes for corporations, refused to allow money to be used to research AIDS, cheated on his first wife, 'Iran Contra', the American Hostages, etc. So don't let those on the "right" lie their way out of the mess their savior Reagan created for Americans!
