Democratic Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal says that he occasionally "misspoke" about the nature of his Vietnam-era military service, but claims the misstatements were "totally unintentional."

Appearing before a lineup of Marine vets, the Connecticut attorney general held a news conference in West Hartford today to push back against this New York Times story. The Times reports that Blumenthal repeatedly described himself as having served in Vietnam, even though he received five deferments before serving stateside in the Marine Corps Reserves. Blumenthal's campaign never corrected media reports that described the candidate as a Vietnam veteran, the Times says.

"On a few occasions I have misspoken about my service and I regret that and I take full responsibility," Blumenthal said. "I will not allow anyone to take a few misplaced words and impugn my record of service to our country,"

Blumenthal ignored a question about whether his comments constituted an apology. He called the mischaracterizations "totally unintentional."

Until this morning, the longtime state politico was a bright spot on Senate Democrats' electoral landscape. Blumenthal is running to replace Sen. Chris Dodd, who is retiring. Polling showed him easily beating any one of the Republicans in the primary, including frontrunner and former wrestling executive Linda McMahon.

In a strange side story, McMahon's campaign initially crowed on its website about its role in feeding the story to the newspaper. That post has since been removed.

What a crapweasal.
You don't "forget" about serving in Vietnam.
You don't "unintentionally" claim, time and again, that you served in Vietnam.

For years reporters have wondered why Blumenthal repeatedly declined to run for higher office. Now we know why.

How can anyone believe these lying democrats anymore...Blumenthal(D) should resign as a candidate immediately after his 'serving in Vietnam lies'
As it turns out though, he only served 2.8 months less in Nam... than John Kerry did.
Pathetic!

Bruce,

The Swamp accepts your apology.

Democrat Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal sure did "misspoke" about serving in Vietnam. I am in the Executive Recruitment business and
Blumenthal reminds me candidates for jobs that put false statements on their resumes. Once it is there you cannot remove it. And it leaves a paper trail. In the business world if a company finds out that they hired a candidate that had submitted a fraudulent resume, it is grounds for dismissal. Unfortunately the public many times gives our elected leaders passes on this. It will be interesting to see what happens in Connecticut on this.

Yes, I would like to apologize for perpetuating the liberal media myth. I would also like to apologize to The Swamp for incorrectly accusing them of having a liberal bias in their reporting, my childish knee jerk far right wing reactions to their otherwise spot-on non-partisan reporting, and my overall petulant whining.

I sincerely hope The Swamp will accept my apology.

So it must be that he thought that Washington (where he was stationed) was actually Vietnam. Boy, was his face red when he realized he 'misspoke'!

Another lie from another liar.

So, if you are considered toxic, devisive, dangerous...what does that make a slim ball that sits in your church for 20 years? is mentored by you, you are like part of the family. Then the slim ball acts like he never knew you, and out slim balls you as he deceives millions around the world.

Who's more devious, dangerous...hmmm? YES, it's your buddy Barrack.

You can see the hatred and lies that Obama has spread all over the web, as delusional posters try and cling desperately to their false messiah. Some will never recover.

Taking credit for feeding oppo research to the Times and then trying hide the fact that you did it was not a real smart move on McMahon's part. But then again, McMahon and her staff don't seem all that bright in the first place - I loved her idiotic staunch defense of oil-drilling the other day.

I thought it was smart by Blumenthal to take the high ground and refuse reporters entreaties to slam McMahon's campaign over this.

I never liked Dubya, ever, and I disliked him even more after he became President. But at least he was honest enough not to pretend to be a Vietnam hero. Blumenthal is a worm.

Yes, he "misspoke," and it was "totally unintentonal." Yes, there is little difference between serving in Vietnam and not serving in Vietnam. I can see how one could get confused by it and errantly misspeak.

I see we, Democrats, aren't without our George W.Bush !! At least, Blumenthal wasn't AWOL, like to "Clueless One " was !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Another Democrat LIAR.And the media still will not chastise him the way they crucified and made fun of Bush's military service. Some double standard.

With all due respect senator dirksen, Blumenthal is being crucified and made fun of in the media and his political career will most likely be over.

What a world class phony!!! Move over John Edwards; you’ve got company in the sleaze department. Blumenthal should be tried for violation of the “Stolen Valor Act of 2005”. When one claims that he served in Viet Nam, he is implying that he is eligible for the Viet Nam Service Medal. Implying such a claim is a violation of this act which amends Title 18, Section 704 of federal law.
Rep. Souder of Indiana does the decent thing and resigns for having an affair with his staffer; but Blumenthal goes on TV and tells the Connecticut voters that he ‘misspoke’. Right!!!! He could just as easily have said that he was in the Spanish-American War and charged up San Juan Hill.

AS I recall, Sen. Dirksen did not serve in WW II.

Anyway, Blumenthal seems to be a 'Nam groupie, a wannabe.

Caught up in his own, somewhat jingoistic rhetoric.

Like many politicians, too in love with the sound of himself talking, talking.
Actually, his over-enthusiastic speechifying reminds me in a way of Holder's ill fated talk wherein he accused Americans of being cowards in racial issues.
This from a first generation, son of immigrants. Maybe that's why he forgot the Civil War. Anyway, he got a little carried away by his own rhetoric, just like this guy.

Now, we know, politicians in Illinois don't do that--they lack vocabulary, for one thing. Not too much beyond deese and dose....

O, well. There are a lot of 'Nam vets who would like to FORGET they were there.

And certainly don't want to TALK about it....

So maybe it evens out.....

Misspoke? I misspoke when I said I wanted sugar in my iced tea instead Splenda. I lied when I said I served in the Civil War under Grant.

For some of us out here we expect our elected leaders to be truthful about their experience and background. Richard Blumenthal, who is running fir the U.S. Senate, got caught lying about his so-called experience serving in Vietnam. The surprising thing is how many posts actually came to his Blumenthal's defense. I guess living in Chicago and Cook County it is natural to support lying politicians. It seems to be a way of life here. I will conclude by saying that I was a super jock and played center field for the World Series Champion New York Yankees. Or maybe I made an over statement?

We all know that if this was done by anybody other than a Democrat the propagandists ministers in the mainstream media and the loony liberals would hound and jump up and down until that person re-signed. But seeing how it is a Democrat it's okay in their mind.

If it was simply a matter of a mistake, just a confusion between "in" and "during," I could kind of stretch my understanding to excuse Blumenthal's statement, or at least understand that it was an honest mistake.

This was NO honest mistake. Blumenthal clearly -- CLEARLY -- made the case that he was a Vietnam War veteran who came home to disrespect. The reality that he served in the Reserves and in fact got several deferments that kept him OUT of Vietnam makes his statement and out-and-out baldfaced LIE, not a little "oopsie!" That he further used the illusion that he was a veteran to try to ingratiate himself to the soldiers who actually DID serve in Vietnam only makes it worse.

This guy's a turd in a birdbath and he should be thown out on his lying keester.

Misspoke is Democrat for lie!!! you know like our president misspoke about not knowing rev Write is a Anti-American racist and Michelle misspoke when she said she has never been proud of her country or or or I could go on forever

It reminds me of J. Kerry, which served in Vietnam. For four months! Call (which was a training) and that a tour of duty. It is even worse. A state attorney trying to make out a false facade general service record? Lawyers are trying to do, self-destruct? I Peshawar, in Pakistan in late 60 were deployed. We, on a nice day e-layer, Vietnam toward the Orient and comms deal with our antennas can pick up the pieces. A wild, disorganized, manic picture it gave us. Oh! However, Pakistani people were polite and friendly in those days.
