Accusing Republicans of sitting idly by during the economic collapse, President Obama today claimed credit for helping to "keep the American Dream alive in our time."

He didn't want to bail out Wall Street banks last year, Obama told factory workers this afternoon, but it was necessary to avert disaster.

"If we simply gave in to the partisan posturing in Washington - all the poll-taking and calculation that caused an entire party to sit on the sidelines - the same party that was in charge when this crisis unfolded - millions more Americans would lose their jobs, their businesses, and their homes," Obama said this afternoon to a crowd in a Buffalo, N.Y.

The remarks came in an address to employees at Industrial Support, Inc., a manufacturing company that does metal fabrication, stamping and welding. It was another stop in the president's ongoing "Main Street" tour, focused on promoting his administration's programs and the Democratic lawmakers who have helped him implement them.

Before the address, the president met with family members of victims of the Continental Connection Flight 3407, which crashed on February 12, 2009, during its approach to Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

He also made a surprise lunch stop to enjoy the local delicacy at Duff's Famous Wings, where he followed a customer's recommendation and ordered a batch of Buffalo wings. Later in the day, he was set to deliver remarks at a fundraising dinner for congressional Democrats at a New York City hotel.

But the president spent the public portion of his day talking about the economy, the focus of his strategy for holding onto his party's majorities in the U.S. House and Senate in this year's elections.

"Having just inherited a $1.3 trillion deficit from the last administration, the last thing I wanted to do was spend money on a recovery package, or help the American auto industry keep its doors open, or prevent the collapse of the Wall Street banks whose irresponsibility helped cause this crisis," Obama said. "But I knew that if we didn't act boldly and quickly - if we didn't defy the politics of the moment and do what was necessary - we would have risked an even greater disaster."

A lot of people aren't yet part of economic recovery, Obama said.

"Economists have all kinds of fancy formulas and mathematical equations to measure the exact moment the recession ended," he said. "And it's great that the stock market has bounced back. But if you're still looking for a job, it's still a recession. If you can't pay your bills or your mortgage, it's still a recession."

The average Low IQ/Low Info member of the Republican base (Teabaggers) refuses to accept that Republicans are at war with the working-class, which is why they support the status quo and vehemently oppose reform (financial and healthcare), unions, public education, government oversight, minimum wage hikes, worker rights, access to higher education, middleclass tax relief, and, in general, any legislation that would jeopardize the continuation of a credit-dependent, employer exploited, unhealthy, downtrodden, politically marginalized, underpaid, debt-laden, undereducated and permanent class of laborers.

Similar to exploited sharecroppers, it’s in the best interest of Republicans to keep the working-class Republican base nuts hopeless, oppressed, misinformed and undereducated.

Republicans staunchly supported the Wall Street bailout to protect their own assets, but opposed the automobile industry bailout, which employs thousands of middleclass Americans. The Republican aristocracy opposes any kind of governmental oversight that will interfere with their pursuit of exploitive capitalism, which is why they want to abolish the EPA, FAA, FDA and Departments of Agriculture, Transportation, Interior, and Education. Anything that protects the worker must go.

Just like feudal lords, Republicans require a formidable army to protect their financial interests, which is why they defend unrestrained military spending. The Iraq War will cost well over $7.6 trillion, while health insurance for every American would cost $1 trillion. Republicans want to keep America angrily divided by class and race, which is why they vehemently oppose any legislative action that would eliminate the status quo and elevate the standard of living for working-class Americans.

First off the deficit he inherited is overstated by $600 billion, the propaganda ministers in the media keep forgetting to report the money returned from the first round bail outs started under Bush. Obama has accomplished passing a healthcare reform bill that does not reform anything and is all ready been shown as a job killing budget busting bill. He is also accomplished shattering the record he set last year for the highest deficit in April by increasing this April's deficit by four times last year's. He is also the only president in American history to have 16 consecutive months without a surplus. Yeah Obama has done a lot to America but not much for America.

98 percent of Americans are getting a tax cut this year thanks to Democratic legislation opposed by every single Republican. The Teabaggers (Republican base) are still upset, of course, since this is somehow more evidence of "socialism". They are distraught that the richest 2 percent aren't getting their taxes cut as well.
.
http://www.ctj.org/obamastaxcuts.php

So here's a grand idea -- how about 100 percent of the Teabagger goons send their tax cut to the 2 percent richest Americans who didn't get one?

Sure, Sarah Palin made over $12 million last year, but she didn't get a tax cut! So the Teabaggers can helpfully send her their tax cut so that she can accumulate more wealth!

And in Trickle-Down fantasy land, that means more jobs for everyone. Yeay!

And here's bonus good news for the Wingnuuters! A form for you to forward your tax cuts to the richest of the rich (Glenn Beck, Druggy Rush, Quitter Sarah etc). It's a great opportunity for you to put your words into action!

How many millions of jobs have you saved or created by quadrupling the deficit you voted for while in the majority party? Explain to us oh lying one how forcing banks to take TARP money they didn't want prevented anything.

Economists have "fancy formulas and mathematical equations" to better understand things that your socialist training never prepared you for. It was your fancy economists that told us that bankrupting the country was the only way to prevent unemployment from exceeding 8%.

It's time to stop adopting every socialist policy that comes along in the naive belief that adopting Greece and Spain's failed experiments is a positive change for this country. It is obvious now that electing a stoner and cokehead with nothing but contempt for the institutions and individual effort that made this country great was a huge mistake.

More political grandstanding from the Democrats and their Messiah.
For the disasterous Obama economy to recover, we need only one person more to lose his job--Obama.

This is isn't the President!. He's a professional "Flip Flopper". First it
was President Bush that started the
bailouts, also I might add at the NObama administrations urging. Now the Republican have been sitting on their hands. I've got news for you Mr. NObama you want to drop the blame on anyone look in the mirror, and at the same time look at your leadership in the Congress.Pelosi and Reid are both losers and the list that goes beyond them is long and distinguished.

Ahhh, Obimbo, it was the TARP fund, created by the BUSH administration that averted disaster. Your spendulus program did nothing but get us deeper in debt. Your shaministration has done nothing but worsen the long-term future of this country. YOU, President Obama, are an abject failure.

A very well deserved reminder of the causes of the current depression.

Just like FDR. Who often reminded the prostrate nation of Republican responsibility for the Depression.

A great opening presents itself for corporate governance reform, financial reform, and environmental reform, all from the same oil platform.

A gusher indeed!

If this is what it takes to make Congress pass some real reforms, then, let the oil flow!

For the odds makers out there:

How long will it be before BP and Halliburton hie themselves off to Bankruptcy Court to shed this liability?

Well, first I guess Congress has to enact Obama's request to remove the cap on their liability, doesn't it?

And fast: so they can't claim an "ex post facto " law or "impairment of contract" impinging their precious bottom line.

Once the law is enacted, it can clearly cover all the future oil being spilled daily.

O, and, obviously:

Obama magic is about all the Dems have going for them now.....

Keep speaking truth to the lies and distortions of the Republican-Libertarian-T.Baggers, President Obama. Remind the nation of the bumbling idjits, the Republican-Libertarian-T.Baggers installed in our White House for 8 years and how they laughed all the way to the Banks we propped up, because of their incompetence and malfeasance !! No, America will show those do-nothings in our Congress, just how they feel about legislators that don't legislate, taking our tax dollars under false pretenses !! Kick those Republican-Libertarian-T.Baggers to the side of the road. They do not deserve to be returned to our Congress after their Obstructionism, unless, of course, you want a great depression, instead of the great recession, they handed President Obama and our nation !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Crying Wingnut,

I'm your worst nightmare, Homie.

I'm everywhere....

Not sure if Obama really wants to attack anyone for sitting on the sidelines- Chairman Obama came off the bench and proceeded to shoot baskets into the opposing teams net...

Here are the facts-
---
The Bush admin and Dem congress partnered to create a $485B Deficit FY 2008
+$100B when the FY ’08 started ( Oct 2008)
So- the deficit was around $600B when the financial crisis hit-
+-+-+-
Then- TARP was passed adding another $700B- making the deficit ( according to Obama) $1.3B…BUT- he is ignoring the fact that $500B of TARP has been paid back. Ironically- AIG, Freddie and Fannie are the deadbeats for this amount.( Freddie and Fannie who just asked for another $10B)
So- the real “inherited” deficit was +/- $800B.
+-+-+-
Then – professor Obama added $300B in stimulus- which, unlike TARP, will never be paid back, and as we now know, was essentially a government jobs program and is gone forever...Bringing the deficit to $1.1T
So when other spending and falling revenues ( from the financial crisis) were sorted out another $300B was added-
Bringing FY 2009 deficit to $1.4T…
+-+-+-
Prez hopey changey inherited a bad deficit and then proceeded to almost double it---

In fact, Congressional Republicans have been going back to their home states in private trying to take credit for the job creation it has provided their constituents......which they voted against.

WINGNUTS: Once again trying to rewrite history. What's new?

"But I knew that if we didn't act boldly and quickly - if we didn't defy the politics of the moment and do what was necessary - we would have risked an even greater disaster." - I thought if we acted boldly and quickly we wouldn't have unemployment over 8%? If they wouldn't have just thrown money at the problem, they could have generated an economy that created jobs w/o bankrupting the next generation. If they didn't pass ObamaCare, they wouldn't have bankrupt the next generation.

But if you're still looking for a job, it's still Obamanomics. If you can't pay your bills or your mortgage, it's still Obamanomics.

The GOP was smart to not climb abord this train wreck. the results will be seen this November.

Smelly,

"The Iraq War will cost well over $7.6 trillion, while health insurance for every American would cost $1 trillion." - First, a source for the the $7.6 Trillion.

Here is a link from a liberal website that has the cost under a Trillion.

http://www.nationalpriorities.org/costofwar_home

Second, the Trillion you quote for BOCare is only for ten years. Will BOCare be done in 2020?

Crooks,

I believe that is 17 straight months - and counting.

Trickled On,

Se what happens when tax cuts not go to job creators. And that April job growth still gives the country a 9.9% unemployment rate - a rate never even approached during the Bush-Cheney administration.

The Stimulus did nothing to pull us from this recession. How much of that Stimulus was spent by Sept 30, 2009? Very little. What helped pull us from the recession, although I disgareed with, was TARP.

Ornery,

Let's remind everyone what caused this recession - the bursting of a housing bubble. A housing bubble by giving people loans that couldn't afford them. This was part of the compromise of Gramm-Leach-Billey Act to avoid a democratic filabuster. The language was inserted at the behewst of the democrats. Thanks for the reminder.

Republicans just love to stick it to the taxpayer when the big corporations screw up. Privatize profits, socialize costs. Republicans only exist to serve the wealthiest among us, seek to help corporations externalize costs.

Wow, what do you know! It's amazing how the left only pays attention to economists when it's what they want to hear. But when a large group of the nation's most talented and respected economist say that the stimulus did not help and may have prolonged the recovery that story is easily overlooked. Nor do they pay attention to reports from around the globe fearing a double dip. They hear a report that states April had a larger job creation than in the previous four years but, what they overlook is a large portion of those hires were for the federal government and are only temporary. Unemployment now stands at 9.9% where real unemployment is now near 18%. What I find funny about the brain-dead liberals nowadays is how they don't even care to read reports being issued by this administration. Like the reports done by the department of Health and Human Services or the man doing the budget work for Medicare. Both of which point out that Obamacare that Obama and the liberals in Congress lied straightfaced to the American people about is going to totally destroy any chance of a balance budget. The only ones to believe them were brain-dead liberals because the vast majority of voters saw right through the liberals lie.

A good example for you brain-dead liberals to look at would be Greece and Spain. Let's see in Greece they have to get rid of their socialist healthcare because it is breaking the bank. Along with their liberal pension plans and bloated government employee roles. And Spain has shut down their Green Initiative Programs because like our Cap and Trade bill they found out they are job killing and budget busting. If we keep headed down the liberal path that this incompetent little boy president has put us on we will be the next Greece and Spain. And before you brain-dead liberal start your flaming look at where Greece and Spain were 10 and 20 years ago.

But America does have two mighty big things going for it. We are still not a socialist country and a healthy mistrust of our government. Members in both parties running for office are actually starting to use anti-Obama positions. Which is not surprising if you are a Republican candidate but what is surprising is now you hear Democrats doing it. That is one of the things the brain-dead liberals can never understand about the Tea Party Movement. And that is the Tea Party Movement really does not care about party lines it's more about ideology and beliefs. But seeing how a majority of liberals do not really have beliefs beyond their small group how could they really understand.

Good old Barry. "Votes" PRESENT how many times and now lambastes people for sitting on the sidelines. I guess THIS IS the experience that Barry knows best . Vote present and then complain. What an empty double talking suit.

Politics, Politics, Politics! President Obama talks a good game about bringing every one together and bi-partisanship. But his form of bi-partisanship is my way or no way. To really get a bi-partisan consensus you have to sit down with the opposition and put together a program that will pass with support from both sides. And that means each side has to make some compromises whether they like it or not. Unfortunately today the Far Left of the Democratic Party and the Far Right of the Republican Party are unwilling to do this. And the President has also been part of this problem. All talk and no action.

Well everyone is content to toss back and forth who owns the deficit from the last 2 years, no one was concerned about the dificit form the previous 8 yrs. Republicans were c9ontent to follow along when I was crying that Bush is th only president to CUT taxes during war time. All of hte funding for the wars was passed through special funding bills so as to not show up as budget deficit. Same stink, different name. The debt kept piling up as Republicans kept trying to paint Democrats as unpatriotic.

I don't trust either one of them. Neither will cut the deficit because it will anger their supporters, but this roller coaster doesn't have any brakes at the end so we need to try stopping now and cut out the budget deficits, real deficits, reduce spending and minimize bureaucracy.

I don't hate government. I hate ineffective government. That includes Republicans & Democrats.

Todd M, you bring up some really good points. It is real easy for each side (just look at some of the posts) to blame each other for the deficits and the big financial mess the United States and the World finds itself in today. But both the Democrats and the Republicans can share the blame by their reckless spending in the past. When the Democrats controlled the House for 40 straight years and the Senate for many of those years the GOP said that if they controlled the Congress they would control spending. But when the Republicans finally got complete control of the White House and the Congress they proved to be just as bad as the Democrats. They had their own agenda and programs and spent like drunk sailors who had been at sea for 6 months and finally got shore leave. During that time the Democrats said that if they were back in control they would be fiscally responsible. But now the Democrats have complete control with big majorities in Congress and they are spending like drunken sailors. There is one thing that the Democratic and Republicans in Washington have in common and that is Both of them cannot control spending.

There is some hope out there with what a few of the more responsible Governors are doing. Governor Brian Schweitzer (D-MT) has cut spending and froze salaries in his state. Montana is one of only two states that actually will have a surplus. And newly elected Governor Chris Christie (R-NJ) is trying to to the same thing in New Jersey against very stiff opposition. It is very unfortunate that Washington and even our State of Illinois do not follow their example of controlling spending. This is not a Republican or Democrat problem and issue as some, including of the posts on site, have made it out to be. This is an American problem. Brian Schweitzer, a Democrat and Liberal from Montana, and Chris Christie, a Republican and Conservative from New Jersey, are doing the right thing and are trying to control spending and improve the economy. It is unfortunate that are other elected officials are not following their example and trying to do the same thing.
