The competition for a high school to play host to President Barack Obama's secondary commencement address this year has gone to Kalamazoo Central High School.

Is Michigan looking like a battleground state?

The Michigan school competed with hundreds nationwide to serve as the stage for the first presidential high school commencement speech.

Presidents typically have addressed three graduating classes each year, including one of the service academies. Obama is adding high schools to the mix.

This year, over the weekend, Obama delivered the first of the 2010 commencement addresses at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

The Department of Education today announced Kalamazoo Central as the winner of the first annual "Race to the Top High School Commencement Challenge.''

"The extraordinary applications we received in the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge are a true testament to the great work happening in high school across the country," Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said today with the announcement.

Kalamazoo Central High School was among 1,000 applications narrowed down by the White House and Department of Education to six finalists. More than 170,000 people submitted short videos and essays from the six finalists. The president selected Kalamazoo from the three with the highest average public ratings.

More than 80 percent of the school's students graduate, the department says, and last year the school met its 'adequate yearly progress' goals -- the criteria for progress set by the No Child Left Behind Act which the Obama administration is attempting to replace with a new Race to the Top program -- for the first time in several years.

One of their assets: The "Kalamazoo Promise," a pledge to pay college tuition for Kalamazoo Central graduates, funded by anonymous donors.

This sounds like a Socialist/Fascist/Commie/Nazi plot to motivate our school children into wanting to learn and get good grades.

HHH

No, We want them to learn, but just be independent and strong enough to stand on their own feet. Not kiss the governments but and get hand outs. And not be brainwashed by Obama. But as for the Socialist/facist/commie/nazi , you said it not me.

BTW....have a wonderful day

He's going to the bedrock of Democratic ideals. The state with the heaviest Dem influence on the economy in all 57 states. And what a rollicking success it is.

Bobbys Mommy sock puppet,

So in the Repug mind....encouraging children to learn = "kissing the government, getting hand outs and being brainwashed by Obama"? hahaha!

No Bobbys Mommy, getting "brainwashed" is what Wingnut parents do when they home school their kids into believing that Ronald Reagan used to kill Grizzly Bears with his bare hands and Jesus rode a Dinosaur.

NEXT!

Otp,

I think since Guam might be tipping into the ocean, we might only have 56 states.

My old high school stunk back in the '90's! They had curriculum that matched industries in the 70's. Mostly liberal arts courses. The new economy is technology. Everything is automated, computerized, and software driven. I wish the high schools would partner up with private businesses and colleges so they can get more exposure to the real world. Instead, they are couped up in classrooms memorizing formulas don't do anything except put me in a coma. . .

The schools are also lagging behind because everyone refuse to institute mandatory "tutoring" for those that fall behind. Hopefully, it doesn't turn into a "babysitting" session. I don't think it will turn into a "babysitting" session if it is run and monitored properly. Think about it? If a kid is flunking, then he or she needs to spend time after school. They shouldn't be outside playing! That way, if he or she wants to play, they'll have to improve their grades first- as an incentive.

If I were Obama, I would avoid appearing in Michigan (or Texas) any more than necessary. Michigan has the highest unemployment rate of any state in the union. Obama made noises that he could create jobs (which the federal government has little power to do), and his efforts have made little, if any, difference in the unemployment rate.
.
Unlike his critics, I don’t believe Obama bears responsibility for the dismal unemployment rate. The government has very few levers to control the economy, and especially in comparison to those wielded the private sector and the market. However, he unreasonably raised people’s expectations by leading them to believe he had the power to make a difference. People blame him for the fact he hasn’t made good, and cannot make good, on these promises. As such, he represents a focus of ever increasing frustration of lost jobs and increasing unemployment.
.
This does not bode well for a happy public, and why his visit to Michigan carries some risk of danger. (Not as much as would exist if he visited, say, Texas; but a risk all the same.) I hope his security people have accounted for this. I, a member of the loyal opposition, will pray for him.

If you think about it, and look at history Obama is doing and attempting allot of the same things Hitler did. Going after the young and the gullible to follow him to the ends of the earth. And baffle them with BS till the cows come home.

Yeah, because promoting education, learning and personal empowerment is so similar to what Hitler did.....NOT!

No, HHH - the Kalamazoo college program was founded by anonymous donors, probably greedy capitalists and evil corporations. It was to restore some faith in the Kalamazoo system which was pretty awful a few years ago. I know parents who chose NOT to enroll their kids in Kzoo despite the promise of "free" college.

It's not a gimme - kids have to have been in the Kzoo system for a number of years and meet some other criteria. It used to be limited to just colleges w/i Kzoo (Western Michigan U, Kzoo College), but that may have changed.

Terry - perhaps we could still save Guam, if we just make the military spread the weight of their troops evenly across the island.

Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell said that having President Obama speak at Kalamazoo Central's commencement is not only a shot in the arm for Kalamazoo, but for the state of Michigan. For a state that has seen dire economic times, it doesn't hurt to have some positive press. Democrat, Republican, Tea Partist, Green Partist, Libertarian....you all should agree that the majority of graduating seniors will have stories to tell for years to come.
