Multiple news outlets are reporting that Indiana congressman Mark Souder will step down today over an affair he carried on with a female member of his staff.
[NOTE: He has resigned. Here is his resignation statement.]
Souder, a Republican, was first elected to the House in 1994. According to POLITICO, Souder informed House Minority Leader John Boehner of the indiscretion Sunday and Boehner told Souder he should resign.
Souder, who represents northwestern Indiana, has scheduled a press conference for 10 a.m. in Fort Wayne. (Here at the Swamp we're not sure if that's Eastern or Central Time because, frankly, the time zones in Indiana have always confused us.) He's married with three children. A staunch conservative, he recently narrowly edged out two challengers in a GOP primary.
Earlier this year, Rep. Eric Massa, a Democrat from New York, walked away after it was revealed he was under an ethics investigation for allegedly sexually harassing a male staffer.
The timing of Souder''s announcement is fitting on a day when a couple of notable incumbents such as Sens. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) and Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) could see their political futures imperiled.

Love the photo! Are you sure it was a female staffer? Looks like another conservative pug went out hiking the appalacian trail.

At least this guy, Souder, fell on the sword, unlike Eric Masa (D) who molested boys and claimed it nothing more than a "tickle party".

Mr. Masa went on the Glen Beck show and clearly stated that he was abusing them. And, that he was even gay. The clips are available on youtube. The days of information distortion is over. The Internet age makes any readers able to verify information!

Souder was about to become a major embarrassment and liability to the Republicans in the Fall. This scandal would probably have killed any chance the Republicans had to hold this seat. Now at least the GOP has a chance to win the seat against a strong Democratic candidate. Remember the late Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill always said that all politics are local and in this particular case that is probably true.

Hey Paulo: Did "Diaper Dave" Vitter (R-LA) fall on his sword when held TWO news conferences and admitted to cavorting with prostitutes in both New Orleans and Washington DC?
Posted by: BC | May 18, 2010 11:40 AM
Mark Souder: "In the poisonous environment of Washington, D.C., any personal failing is seized upon, often twisted, for political gain," he said. "I am resigning rather than to put my family through that painful, drawn-out process."
Nice try at pinning your lack of morals on the beltway environment. You, and others like you, are part of why American patriots are so sick of our government officials.
Oh, and to the right: the Godless hypercritical-hypocritical left will never cut you any slack. So keep that in mind as you head to the no-tell motel.
It's house cleaning time! Stand, be counted, and VOTE!

Fresh from the Family Values party, yet another hypocrite...

What an utter joke the DNC Swamp is.
The obscure Congressman Souder gets an article.
But not CT Dem Richard Blumenthal, who (in rosier times) the DNC Swamp promoted with several articles?
As the whole world, except for Swamp "journalists", knows, last night the NY Times revealed that US Senate candidate Blumenthal had been lying for 30 years in his claims to have been a Vietnam War vet.
Why do Swamp writers sacrifice their journalistic credibility to cover up for Democrats? Are they that partisan?
Posted by: Bruce | May 18, 2010 12:06 PM
Souder could of made it worse and said that he served in Vietnam too...like A.G Richard Blumenthal(D) just did,
...or spend 2.8 months in Nam and come back with 4 medals and a lot of B.S stories like John Kerry(D) did.

His affair was with a female staffer! And, unlike a current sitting Dem Congressman, whose live-in companion was arrested for running a male prostitution business, or another of his companions that screwed up Fannie Mae. At least, Souder was frank with the public! And, he did not vote for Obamacare!!!
Posted by: slobber | May 18, 2010 1:08 PM
Mr. RodneyKing, Massa NEVER said he was gay and NEVER said he was abusing them. He did say the tickling was all in "fun." If those clips are on YouTube as you claim, then please provide the links!
Souder admitted his mistake and has resigned over it. And, gibster, anyone can make mistakes and sin. Every single person sins on a daily basis. The difference is that some people admit their sins and look for salvation and forgiveness, while others say, "so, what?" "big deal." People who believe in family values can still make mistakes. I don't think I've ever one said they cannot or don't.

And, by the way, where o where is the Swamp item about Richard Blumenthal and his lie about serving in Vietnam? He had been touted as the savior of the Demoncrat party in Connecticut. Well, perhaps not.
Posted by: John D | May 18, 2010 1:20 PM
Another "Family Values" Republican bites the dust!
At least this Souder guy had the good sense to admit that he's a hypocrite and resign. That's more than we can say for the other "Family Values" Republican hypocrites (John Ensign, David Vitter, Mark Sanford).

To all of you asking about the Blumenthal issue -- the story was on the front "page" of the Trib online yesterday. No, no blog posting about it. But a full-on story.
America -- the left won't cut the right any slack? Sure -- like the billions of dollars that were spent to impeach President Clinton for lying about having an extra-marital affair. Whole lot of slack cutting there.

johnny dillweed,
I like how you paint the aethiest and agnostics with a broad brush. Most of them don't sin (remember sinning is in the eye of the believer), and secondly, most of them don't do anything that is immoral. What I have seen in my life is the opposite of what you stated: It is the kristians that think they get let off the hook when they take their communion, (etc.) and think that they are "forgiven" and that they have a fresh new slate to dirty up. It is the aethiest who's slate is never wiped clean and is always vigilant about it.

No, Hillary "impeached" him for the affair. We didn't spend billions. Did you "misspeak'?
Read this slowly: Clinton lied to a Grand Jury in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case.
Remember the quivering lip and the finger point? Great stuff.

Paulo, I don't think you have studied WW II history.
There are plenty of highly decorated airmen whose combat careers were over in a matter of months.
They would fly a mission every other day, weather permitting.
Ploesti, Regensburg, Anzio, Toulon.....
They were told their tour was officially over after 50 missions.
But very few made it.
KIA, MIA or POW.
All in a few months' time.
What medals were you awarded, Paulo?

This guy reminds me of that Rev. Rekker who hired some male escort to go on vacation with him.
Or, more on point, Henry Hyde, the self annointed pillar of rectitude who went after Clinton and then was outed for hsi own extra marital affair he had in his 40's ("youthful indescretion" he called it...youthful if you're Methuselah).

Gibster,
Why is it a Republican that is caught cheating on his wife is a hypocrit, but democrats are not. Is cheating on one's spouse expected of democrats?
Horrible Form,
Are you insuating he is gay because of how he looks? How does a gay guy look?

Republitard members of Congress had better watch out for the truth coming out - your filthy pederastic leanings are being advertised and exposed and make your Party of Pederasts look like the liars and babyfuckers you are !
Democrats will reign for at least the next 30 years !!
Count on it, Cletus !!

T, I think the problem with Souder was his aggressive holier-than-thou preaching down to fellow human beings,
lecturing them about Abstinence and all that.
He's gotta know the Goddess Karma is gonna come after him with a special vengeance.
I mean, if you're gonna sin big time, keep it on the QT and don't set yourself up as some saint on a purple pulpit.
Henry Hyde was another one.
All the time wasted by the Congress on Bill Clinton's character flaws (as if those weren't known or suspected already).
Gotta wonder what all that time might have been spent on other than Monica's dry cleaning bills.....

Clownhandle: nice post. You should be forced to wash out your mouth with the SWAMP.
Also, are you not referring to your hero, Bawdy Fwank, defender of immorality, man-boy love, and poster boy of the mortgage meltdown?
James & Staff: good job monitoring posts. The angry left is now free to use the full extent of their public school vocabulary.

I never liked this guy and not just because I'm a Democrat. He's a weasel and I'm glad to see his true nature revealed. Once again the "upright Conservatives" have proven their hypocrisy.
At least Democrats admit their human frailties. Oh how the mighty fall!

It is unfortunate, that there are so many hypocrites that have been elected to office and I am not talking about political stances, so much, as the morals question. We, as voters, have not been doing our jobs, nor using our minds. The latest example, a representative from the good state of Indiana, was a champion of high morals standards and yet, he couldn't live up to those standards. I don't find any pleasure upon hearing of someone's downfall, for whatever reasons. As that great saying goes: There goes me, but for the grace of God.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

---------------------------
Because Republicans run on "family values" in their campaign. If not, then don't run the ads claiming "family values." The Democrats in large part don't run on family values- although a few do. But that is not their platform or message. I think that's a Republican thing: "family values" and cheat on your wives. When almost every congressman is doing it!

Free to watch - yes, my "billions" was a typo. I meant "millions." As in $70 million. I appreciate your pointing out my error.
Yes, Clinton lied to a grand jury -- the lie was about whether or not he had an extra-marital affair with Monica Lewinsky. I did not misspeak, nor do I need you to speak slowly. Perhaps you read my post too quickly for your own comprehension.
