Reid says new unemployment benefits package has GOP votes

Facing stiff Republican opposition, Congressional Democrats will try again this week to pass an extension of unemployment benefits for the more than 1.2 million jobless Americans whose aid expired earlier this month.

The House is likely to vote tonight, and the Senate Thursday, in an exercise that is as much about policy as politics. Democrats seek to illustrate for voters the stark differences between the two parties heading into the November mid-term elections.

"We are doing something that's very American - helping people in an emergency," said Sen. Harry Reid, (D-NV), the majority leader, on Wednesday. "It is the right thing to do."

Twice this month the Senate has been unable to pass a benefits extension, but the new stripped down bill, shorn of other domestic spending, has drawn support from two Senate Republicans, Reid said.

Still, with the death this week of Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.), the bill faces an uphill climb in the Senate, where Democrats now control 58 votes. To overcome a filibuster 60 votes are needed.

Senate Republicans oppose paying for the $33 billion bill as an emergency that would add to the debt, saying funding should be taken by cutting other programs, namely unused stimulus spending approved as part of the economic recovery.

The House was unable to pass the bill on Tuesday on a supermajority vote, but is expected to try again with a simple majority.

The bill would extend unemployment aid through November, and would be retroactive to those whose benefits expired at the end of May. By week's end the number of unemployed Americans without extended benefits is expected to swell to 1.6 million, according to the National Employment Law Project.

The Senate bill also contains a separate provision to extend until Oct. 1 the deadline
for homebuyers who entered into a binding contract by April 30, 2010 to close the sale and qualify for a tax credit. That bill overwhelmingly passed in the House on Tuesday.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis joined Senate Democrats today in urging the chamber to help out-of-work Americans.

"Too many in the Senate are simply unwilling to stand up for those who have lost their jobs," Solis said. "There are Americans are counting on all of our elected representatives and senators."

If one of these is your senators, and you live in the right state, start a recall or don’t re-elect!!!

While two million people have run out of unemployment benefits, the Senate Republicans are insisting they're just protecting us from deficit spending by obstructing another extension. They weren't worried about deficit spending when Bush wanted massive tax cuts, and they weren't worried when Bush started two wars. But while 25 million people are unemployed with many of them clinging to their unemployment checks just to survive, Republicans are playing partisan games.

What's amazing is that so many poor and middle-class right wing simpletons watch the Republicans do this kind of crap to them over and over again, and then they re-elect them! It boggles the mind. "Thank you, sir. May I have another?" Stockholm Syndrome? I have this mental image of the C Streeters sitting around the living room at night with snifters of brandy and cigars laughing their butts off about collectively screwing the whole country by convincing the average low IQ Republican to vote against their own self interests again and again and again. And then discussing new diabolical plans for the next day (Tea Parties anyone?).

Obama and the job-destroying Democrats are at it again with this bill.

Any 4th grader knows, or should know, that passage of this bill will increase joblessness, and increase taxes. Yet the jobs-hating Democrats do it anyway.....

They're stuck on stupid.

The Rethuglicans are such hypocrites. Did they pay for the Bush tax cuts for the rich, Bush's war of choice in Iraq, the TARP bailout that was initiated under Bush, or the hundreds of other things over the previous eight years?

Absolutely not.

So where do they draw the line? Helping the unemployed.

Do these guys intentionally set out to be thugs or does it just come naturally for them?

Do the Rethugs really think that the unemployed don't get to vote? Idiots

Did they take you out back of the shed and beat out your brains?
.
What is wrong with attempting to rein in the runaway deficit Congress is creating? You fault Republicans for championing some fiscal responsibility because they weren’t fiscally responsible before? I find that amazingly dense. There is no wrong time to start doing the right thing. Also, maybe it never occurred to you that, as problems get worse, people wise up and change their minds. Someone who doesn’t favor bailing out a boat might change his or her mind when they see they will soon be up to their neck in water. Moreover, maybe some of them smartened up a bit and decided to listen to their constituents for once. There is a growing groundswell of conservative backlash against those who can’t keep the government’s house in order, and that backlash is aimed at spendthrift Republicans just as much as it is at Democrats. This whole idea, that changing one’s mind or be willing to do something different is a form of insincerity and hypocrisy, has to go.
.
And did it ever dawn on you that just because something ought to be done, that any old stupid idea might not work? The Republicans in Congress have never said they object to extending unemployment benefits in the abstract. What they object to is the Democrats’ plan to extend unemployment benefits through new deficit spending. They would be happy to extend unemployment benefits if the money came from reallocating funds - as would be the case if an unspent portion of the so-called stimulus bill were used to fund the extension instead of incurring new debt. The stimulus plan is a resounding failure, and only a fool can’t see that. So why not spend some of the stimulus money on unemployment benefits? Doing so “stimulates” the economy, according to Democrats, because it puts money in the hands of people who will then spend it.

"We are doing something that's very American - helping people in an emergency," said Sen. Harry Reid, (D-NV), the majority leader, on Wednesday. "It is the right thing to do."

No Harry, what you are doing is very liberal american in order to buy more votes.

Those fatcat, Obstructionist Republicans in our Senate, who enjoy free healthcare, paid for by some of those very unemployed that need their help now, can not help out those neediest of our citizens and families, because they want to grandstand about the deficit. The deficit they created. Cynicism, thy name is Republicanism !! The riotous element in all of this charade is, they expect to win seats in the next election. The Obstructionists are in for a very rude awakening. They will be lucky to keep ex Senator Larry Craig's seat. The Republican-Libertrian-T.Baggers went from the pathetic to the ridiculous, all because they refuse to give a helping hand, to those citizens that lost their jobs, due the incompetence and malfeasance of the Bush&Cheney years!! They have become ridiculous excuses for Americans.

What happened to America and the Gulf of Mexico? Capitalism, happened!! Isn't it a wonderful marauding form of equal opportunity for all. That is, an equal opportunity for all to pay, with our taxes dollars, Corporate America's expenses, but not to share in Corporate America's greedy profits !! What's happened to American democracy, Capitalism hit it !!
Now, go home, celebrate the Fourth of July and wonder why we are celebrating it. We are as much under the boot of Corporate America, as we were, under the boot of the english oppressors of 1776!! Does British Petroleum, come to mind?
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

All of this Republican crap about "the role of the state" is just a rationalization for greed. Jim Crow era segregationists used an analogous state's rights excuse to rationalize their racism.

It's long past time that the coerporate media started speaking the truth about what todays fringe Republican party is all about. Blocking unemployment? Apologizing to BP? Get real.

Today's Republican "policy" is nothing more than a very thin veneer of lipstick sprayed on a pig of racism, greed, selfishness, xenophobia, and hate — all driven by fear, insecurity, and guilt/projection.

Let's see here, first of all, pretend journalist and professional DNC propagandist Lisa Mascaro doesn't quote one Republican in her article.
Second, nowhere does DNC Propagandist Mascaro even note that the GOP has put forth several alternatives that would continue unemployment benefits without adding to the deficit.
Then we have all these posts from The Lefty Loon Formerly Known as John E, that are rooted in the surreal fantasy world of lies that is the Left.
The Bush tax cuts were not just for the rich, but for ALL Americans, as Bush CUT the tax rates for all Americans and in fact the lowest wage earners no longer pay a federal income tax because of Bush (though under Obimbo that will change come next year). The Iraq War was voted on by many, many Democrats, and the TARP fund was voted on by most Democrats and enlarged under the Obimbo administration. But, as usual, facts get in the way of the Alterative Surreal Fantasy World that is the Loony Left!

I know people that are of retirement age, got laid off and are just collecting unemployment for the last 18 months. It's a freebie.

Those of you who do not depend on the check don't know what it's like. I am one of those people I was laid off from my job last year while I was six months pregnant. Couldn't go back to work then because the next month I had my son. Seven months. So working was hard. I fill out a million applications a day. No one calls back. I have a bachelor's degree and still can't get a job. I still have my son and a house to take care of. Unemployment was what I had to live off and I still looked for a job everyday. Now I sit here rent is due tomorrow and I am still wondering where it's going to come from. The republicans are only looking out for themselves. They don't care. Like so many people have said now they want to worry about the economy but as long as they were able to spend like they wanted when they were in charge it was fine. The economy was messed up before Obama even took office. Now when President Obama who just happened to be a black man that is in office they want to discredit him and make him look stupid. America is supposed to be the richest company in the world, they can help every other country with their problems but leave their own people to struggle. Come one people stop thinking about yourselves and think about us. I understand that there are some people that abuse the system but I am not one. I need the help. Until you go through you will never know what it's like not to have money to have your rent paid or food in the refrigerator. Then no one will help you!!! No what am I supposed to do?

Republicans are not on the side of the regular blue collar American tax payer.

This is a theme that the Dems must repeat to everyone we know, over and over. It's simple and it's true.

Which side are Republicans on? Big Business. Billionaires. Big Oil. The Military Indutrial Complex.

The unemployed should be mad as hell at this administration. We want jobs! Where are the jobs? Are we going to have 10% unemployment forever?

Biden says those jobs aren't coming back. Well where did they go Joe? China, India, Indonesia. Please someone lecture me about how its a global economy...through our misguided "Free Trade" agreements with a Communist country where nobody and nothing is "free" we have given away high paying jobs in favor of cheap Wal Mart junk, made in China. That crazy Ross Perot was right, Bush 1 and Clinton were wrong. Rahm Emmanuel should fall in the sinkhole of history as responsible for the suffering of millions of American workers.

Senator Harry "Crooked Land Deal" Reid states " helping people in an emergency" - an emergency that is being made worse daily by the anti-business policies of the BO Regime on a daily basis.

The real sad news is that it could be that businesses are accelerating buisness into this year as opposed to next year so that their revenues are taxed at lower rates. To you Flatliners that means that this year's 2.7% GDP might be as good as it gets for a few years.

Alex,

Those Wall Street bonuses were paid out within the law, within TARP wich Obama and Biden both voted for. Perhaps if the democratic Congress in 2008 had written a better TARP law, those bonuses might not have been paid.

When the democrats took over Congress in 2007, they PROMISED that future expenditures would be paid for. When are they going to start? They could pay for these unemployement extension by repealing some wasteful spending from the STimulus.

As for the 10% unemployment - this would be another Obama crisis that the democrats don't want to waste.
What about solving the unemployment problem? Do you remeber that unemployment wasn't going over 8% if the Stimulus was passed?

The definition of insantity is doing the same thing time after time and expecting different results. Maybe the Obama Regime should try tax cuts for the job creators. Only 13,000 jobs were created in June by the Private sector.

FITZ,

I see HHH has changes his name - several times!

Keeping people on the government dole will do nothing for the economy, except make their benefactors look good in their eyes and perhaps vote for them in the fall. The whole Democrat machine is predicated on keeping people beholding to the government, so they (the Dems) can be their benevolent leaders.

What happened to our democracy???? Capitalism !!! What did Capitalism say about Democracy? I have yet to run into a democracy, that I couldn't corrupt, that I couldn't undermine, that I couldn't negate !! That's what happened to your democracy, America. British Petroleum and their ilk, got a hold of it !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Unemployment needs to be extended right now, along with a Tier 5 introduced as another bill. There are simply not enough jobs out there, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that. Kentucky should be ashamed of Mitch McConnell as a senator for the state. Republicans simply only care about tax breaks for the rich (themselves and their friends). I'm guessing they're about 15 million Americans out there who are re-remembering exactly why it is that Republicans are so deep in the minority today, and they'll be motivated to keep them in the minority come this falls mid term elections.

During times like these the Greedy Oil Party position is both foollish and mean spirited.

To go further with Pres Obama's analogy that the Republicans drove the "car into the ditch" and now "they want the keys back" needs expansion.

Republicans ran the car into the ditch as it ran out of gas and now they want the keys back and they are absolutely sure it's going to run like new when they remove the spark plugs.

Fear is powerful and it has driven many people into derangement throughout history, and the Republican party has used it as their hammer to get the low IQ members of their base to vote and protest against their own self interests for years now.

FTWLBE, as you point out, Joe Biden is absolutely right. Those jobs aren't coming back. The reason is that the proximate cause of the loss of those jobs isn't the current recession, it's part of a longer trend.

The current recession didn't cause the decline of automobile manufacturing in Michigan. It didn't cause the loss of the textile industry, or the loss of the electronics industry. The cause is the combination of two factors: first, it's more expensive to manufacture something here than it is to make it overseas and ship it here, and second, there aren't enough of us who will look for the "Made in USA" label and pay more so that American workers can have jobs.

The American public at large is responsible for the loss of those jobs; we want to make lots of money, and we want to pay as little as possible for what we buy. It's not the Republicans or the Democrats, or those greedy corporate fat cats, it's us.

I bet none of you brain-dead liberals went beyond what the mainstream media is telling you. The Democrats have slipped in $10 billion for the teachers union's. And over $10 billion in pork projects have been slipped in and only a few million is going to one Republican for security program other than that one it's all liberal pork. Liberals now only account for 20% of voters that 20% includes most of the mainstream media so of course you're not going to get the whole story from them. What you do not get is that the vast majority wants the Democrats to stop shuffling money to the unions for votes. What the vast majority wants is to stop the unnecessary pork spending that the Democrats have been loading onto every bill. Even in the defense supplemental bill the Democrats have loaded it with pork spending.

Where is the money coming from? If we had a surplus it'd be fine but to borrow money to give to people is insane.
The one poster saying she has a kid yet shes seems very content in dumping more and more debt on her 7 month old. How can anyone think we're the richest country in the world when we owe 13 trillion and counting?
It's like looking at a guy who's underwater on the mortgage of his huge house and thinking he's rich. Stop the spending, cut programs, cut taxes and most importantly, stop letting politicians spew lies that they have the answers - when they are the problem in the first place.

Typical day in the life of our resident Swamp troll:
*
7:00 am - Wake up and get ready for a long day of blogging.

*
8:00 am - 12:00 pm - Tedious but incredibly important task of copying posts from one liberal blog and pasting them onto another.
*
9:00 am - Drink Diet Pepsi. Repeat every half hour.

10:00 am - Yell at mother about laundry not being done.
*
11:30 am - Close basement window shade for fear of exposure to sun.

*.
2:30 pm - Tell father that you filled out several job applications today, but there is just nothing out there.
*
3:00-10:00 pm - Continue copying and pasting lefty talking points. Diet Pepsi and hot pockets as needed. Yell at parents that they don't love you if they dare to ask why you don't have a job, never go outside, sit in front of a computer all day, or why you are still living in their basement.
*
10:30 pm - Bed time
*
Repeat daily.

Sounds like Geographically Stupid Little Johnnie D, "the Joseph Stalin of Streamwood", is JEALOUS of Lisa Mascaro because she's employed as a real journalist; something he can only dream about.

Hey, " Ferry ", here you are punching daily screeds, for a mere bag of Shells, signifying nothing and our Speaker of the House of Representatives, Speaker Pelosi is helping President Obama and Vice-President Biden untie that Gordian Knot, that the Bush&Cheney regime insisted on leaving in their wake. It will take our President and Vice-President a while, particularly with the lock-stepping Obstructionists Republicans in our Senate, but by President Obama's second term, our economy will be humming. You know what it will be humming: Who the heck is Bush&Cheney? A vaudeville act !!?

FUTZ,

Please describe the "Gordian Knot" that President Bush and Vice-President Bush left behind for BO and Biden. How did President Bush and VIce-President Cheney create this "Gordian Knot"?

Let's hope that BO can get an economy goiung in 48 months, so far he has struckout for the first 18 months. BO's solution to lowering the unemployment is to discourage workers from looking for a jobs so they will drop from the unemployment statistics.
