The Swamp

by John Chase

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mark Kirk today acknowledged he was twice counseled by the Pentagon for politicking while on active duty.

The remarks came as the five-term congressman offered another mea culpa for embellishing his military record at his first news conference since disclosures about his military career surfaced about a month ago.

Kirk said he was "careless" in describing his career as a reservist in the Navy and apologized to the public for it. When the questions first came up, Kirk appeared before the Tribune editorial board, where he also apologized.

"I have made mistakes concerning certain aspects of my accomplishments and experiences, and I apologize for those mistakes and I pledge to correct those errors," he said today. "I am not perfect and was careless. I will do better and I will make sure this never happens again."

Since the disclosures, Kirk has been under fire in his nationally-watched Senate contest against Democratic opponent Alexi Giannoulias for the seat once occupied by President Barack Obama. Last week, Kirk dodged reporters who wanted to ask him about the military record controversy by darting through a kitchen of a downtown Chicago hotel after speaking at a public event.

Don't care, no apology needed. Kirk will be your next senator of IL. Like it or not Fitz and the rest of the sheeple.

It is about time because this story was not going away. Why did he stretched the truth regarding his military record? Kirk has a good record and has served the citizens of the 10th Congressional District very well. This is a mostly Moderate with a strong independent streak to it. Many people vote for the candidate over the party. Kirk is moderate on social issues and fiscally conservative on financial issues which fits a majority of the district. What Kirk has done is turn what was going to be a Republican Senate Victory in the Fall into a much tighter race. But Kirk may still pull it out because the Democrats also have serious problems with their candidate Alexi Giannoulias and his failed bank that gave loans to mobsters. And who knows what embarrassing stories for the Democrats may come out of the on going Blago trial? All these factors plus this probably being a Republican year Kirk can still ride to victory in November. But only time will tell.

Let's see here, on May 5, less than 2 weeks after the failure of Alexi Giannoulias's family bank, Broadway Bank, a CBS 2 reporter was bitching and moaning about Mark Kirk focusing on the failed family bank. In fact, other members of the media complained to the Kirk campaign about the failed bank.
Yet, here were are MORE than one month after the revelations about errors in Mark Kirk's military record, the media can't let go of it.
Broadway Bank: cost U.S. taxpayers $400 MILLION, loans approved and organized by Alex given to drug dealers and organized crime figures.
Since then, it has been discovered that Alexi LIED on his resume about a charitable group he still led and about his position as president of a banking association. Yet, where was the Chicago media in covering that?
Here is the link of Channel 2 and its moaning to Mark Kirk about Broadway Bank:

The Chicago Media: More Corrupt than Organized Crime.

For those of you who are having trouble keeping track of Mark Kirk's military lies, here's a list (so far):

As of about a week ago, the list was up to eight separate incidents: Kirk (1) falsely claimed he served "in" Operation Iraqi Freedom; (2) falsely claimed to "command the war room in the Pentagon"; (3) falsely claimed to have won the U.S. Navy's Intelligence Officer of the Year award; (4) falsely claimed to have been shot at by the Iraqi Air Defense network; (5) falsely claimed to be a veteran of Desert Storm; (6) falsely claimed to be the only lawmaker to serve during Operation Iraqi Freedom; and (7) falsely claimed to have been shot at in Kosovo; and (8) falsely claimed to have been shot at in Kandahar.

We can add number 9 with the deployment debunking, in which Kirk repeatedly claims his annual training missions are deployments. The Navy begs to differ.

Also number 10, as well, since we now have confirmation from the DOD that Kirk had violated Pentagon policy by conducting partisan political activity while on active duty, which Kirk has strenuously denied, even to the point of claiming that the Obama administration altered his record.

Can Kirk break a dozen lies? Given the latest polling, maybe he should try an entirely new tactic. Like say, TELLING THE TRUTH!

Mark Kirk was a member of the 1986 Chicago Bears football championship team. He started at free safety. He was so fast that to this day no one remembers seeing him play.

Mark Kirk won the Tour de France ten times before Lance Armstrong had even learned how to ride a bike.

Mark Kirk speaks 15 languages fluently. If you don't understand what Mark is saying it's because you are not as fluent as he is.

Mark Kirk captured Osama bin Laden with his bare hands and buried him in his back yard. That's why no one can find Osama.

Mark Kirk once won “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” in 1 minute. A record that is so unbreakable that the producers had to erase it so as not to intimidate the other players.

Still no Swamp mention of the Blagojevich trial, with its featured players Barack Obama, Rahm Emanuel and Alexi Giannoulias.

But plenty of Swamp article on Obama's hamburger. And now this....

As a former Democrat, I feel sorry for the Swamp journalists, who are so obviously under orders to avoid writing about frontpage stories that might reflect badly on their man Barack.

John,

You should reread the story to see why this is in the news again after a month. It has nothing to do with not letting it go. There was an actual development in the story, and they reported on it. I'm sure if there was a press conference today by Alexi, you would have no complaints.

JohnD quit crying about the media. The Broadway Bank failure was reported when it was news. The Alexi/Giorango story was covered when it was news.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot and Mark Kirk's lies are being exposed you want to change the story back to old news that has already been reported.

The Kirk story stayed in the news because new revelations were uncovered on a daily basis and because Kirk was ducking the press.

For those keeping score, subjects Mark "Pinocchio" Kirk wants to avoid right now like the plague are: the naval intelligence officer of the year award that he didn't receive, the Pentagon war room that he didn't command, the fire he didn't come under while in Iraq, Kosovo or Kandahar, Desert Storm that he didn't serve in, Operation Iraqi Freedom that he didn't serve in, the nursery school where he didn't teach and where he didn't have students bringing guns to class ...

Kirk is a serial liar, he needs to resign.

Mark Kirk has a record that he embellsihed, Alexi has a record that he has ran and hid from.

As BO stated, "Bankers don't need another vote in the United States Senate". On this one, I couldn't agree with him more.

Maybe BO can find Alexi a spot with Fannie and Freddy since Alexi has a good experience with banks not making any money.

Win at any cost - the Chicago (Democrat) method!

Daily Kos admits its polls were rigged!

Jazzy, Kirk apologized for his resume errors weeks ago. There have been no new revelations, except for the fact that Kirk once again has apologized for his errors.
Funny, I don't recall Alexi apologizing for his contributions to the failure of Broadway Bank, for the loss of over $100 million in the Bright Start program, for his resume errors as well.
Nor do I recall the media focusing too much on those things (except for the bank failure).
But the failure of the bank is epic. It cost the FDIC $400 million. Alexi gave loans to felons and criminals. Those are significant errors the media didn't want to cover anymore, as noted in the Channel 2 producer whining.
Hmmm, if Kirk's family owned Broadway Bank and if Kirk gave loans to criminals and felons, somehow I don't the media would let it rest until Kirk was out of the race.
Jack Ryan, anyone?

There must be a lot of people who post here not from Illinois, and not familiar with Illinois politics. This is news? Kirk could tell a new lie every week and still be the most honest politician in Illinois.

Mark Kirk invented the internet.

Mark also knows how to reverse global warming.

Mark can plug that BP well.

Well, it's all good fun.

But Herb H overlooked one Illinois politician who was never accused of "enhancing" his resume.

He's living in the White House at this moment.

Mark Kirk is misleading, deceitful, and untrustworthy. He has lied to everyone over and over about his service record. The man is a fraud and I wouldn't believe a word he says. He should also be confronted about his treasonous comments he made about the U.S. while in China.

There must be something in the water, out there in the western suburbs, concerning Republican office holders' transgressions. Representative Kirk doctors his personal history, both, military and educational, or should I use the word, enhances, it!!? That is supposed to be fine, nothing to it. He would make for a very deficient leader, if elected.
I am reminded of that other bastion of Family Values, who was in of our Congress, in 1998: The Republican, Representative Henry Hyde. At the age 41 years old, he was found to have had an extra-marital affair, which resulted in the break-up of the marriage of the woman, with whom he was having the affair. For some reason, Representative Hyde's marriage remained intact. His unforgettable remark, in justifying his ridiculous behavior in this extramarital affair was: " It was a youthful indiscretion!"( At age 41 years.) What Family Values !!? Penitent!!?

Little Johnny D,
Are you under the impression that the FDIC is funded by tax payer dollars and is not funded thru insurance premiums that member banks pay?

To Don Fitzgerald: You need to get your suburbs right. Mark Kirk represents the 10th Congressional District which is in the North Suburbs. Our politicians in both parties are not perfect. Just look at the latest news, which was a big surprise, that even Al Gore has had some extra martial flings in the Clinton tradition. And who knows what new things concerning our local politicians is going to come out of the Blago Trial which is playing like a political soap opera.

Sorry, but it wasn't "careless" and it wasn't "a mistake."
I clearly, repeatedly, made false claims to inflate his military record.
There is no way to weasel that away.
The only way for an apology to work is to apologize for what you actually did, not some squishy, self-serving, "lite" version of what you did.

"Still no mention of the Blago trial....

Yeah, except for the fact that it HAS been mentioned on here multiple times!
Posted by: former Republican"

Thank you, former Sane Person, for proving the truth of what this former Democrat said.
The best you could come up with was 4 Swamp articles, 2 of them from 2009--prior to the trial.
4 Swamp articles in 14 months--about one every 3 months! For the biggest corruption trial in state history.

The Swamp has written more articles about Obama's choice of pet dogs, than about the Blagojevich/Emanuel/Obama trial.

You do realize, Equal time, that the trial is in Chicago and that the Tribune has an entire blog dedicated to it? http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/blagojevich-on-trial/

Dumb Dumb Janet, where do you think the money comes from the banks pay? Do you think they just print it? Tell me, Dumb Dumb Janet, where does that money come from? I'll answer for you: the people and businesses who put their money in the banks and who take out loans with interest!
Tell me Dumb Dumb Janet, do you think the resources of the FDIC are infinite?

Little Johnny D,
The FDIC member banks pay the insurance premium. Taxpayers don't fund the FDIC you nitwit because if I belong to a Credit Union, my account is not insured thru the FDIC therefore none of my money goes towards paying FDIC member insurance premiums. Do you understand? You are a dumb animal aren't you?

Yes, the printing machine only needs paper and the "ON" switch! As long as we still have trees, we are safe. And a dog to make sure no one touches the switch.

Dumb Dumb Janet, I know you are dumb, ignorant, f-ed in the head lefty moron, I'll answer the questions for you that I posed.
The money that banks pay into the FDIC comes from insurance premiums they pay. Ultimately, any money paid out by banks comes from deposits and interest earned, that is how banks get money.
Anyway, Dumb Dumb Dumb Janet, the FDIC also has been under stress because of all the bank failures, so the FDIC has had to borrow from the U.S. Treasury and more money has been printed to cover the losses.
This will help the average intellectual person, Janet, but since you are ignorant beyond belief, it won't help you:

Which candidate ran a mob-connected bank? Since the Tribune has spent so much time on this Kirk deal, I forgot who owned what! Was it Kirk that claimed to head a charity that was no longer in existence? Was it the Kirk family that had that failed bank? Which candidate was called to testify in th Blago trial? And, which candidate would continue the Chicago-style corrupt politics?

I think the name Giannoulias rings a bell......

Ornery,

Speaking of the Internet and Global Warming, what's Al Gore been doing lately?

Kirk the Jerk doesn't know who is, from day to day. That's how it is with the Republican-Libertarian-T.Baggers!! They haven't a clue !! Just ask Randy and Sarah the Quitter!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

Steve, the Chicago LIBune never reported about Alexi saying he headed up a nonexistent charity. Oh, and the LIBune never reported that Alexi said he was the president of a banking association when he wasn't.
And, as you note, the Chicago LIBune no longer interested in Alexi's family bank.
The Chicago Tribune = BS Artist DNC Propagandists.

Compare Congressman Kirk with Alexi the Robber Banker Baron

http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/30/kirk-takes-aim-at-giannoulias-in-new-ads/

Hey, is it true that Kirk the Jerk was the first man on the moon? I wanted to ask that question now, as a pre-emptive strike, in case his political bureaucracy sends out another self-serving, though untrue, press release. You never know about those Republican-Libertarian-T.Baggers, as patriotic as they are, even though they go home and ignore the unemployed workers and their families, who are in dire need of those extended benefits! Those patriotic Republicans have obstructed again, this time it affected citizens in serious need. What the heck do those Obstructionists care, they are getting their fat paychecks and free healthcare, from the very people who are now unemployed, hoping and praying for some help from our government. The best those poor excuses for Americans can do, is to go back home an boast how they are fighting the deficit on the backs of the unemployed !!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE AND WHOLE. NOW.

T, my guess is Gore is happy to be out of politics and his biggest problem is scheduling time with various grandchildren....

PFUTZ,

I guess 99 weeks of benefits (original unemployment is only 26 weeks) is not enough for worthless Democrat-Socialist-Rearendrammers such as yourself. What these unemployed people are looking for are jobs - like they had during the Bush-Cheney years.

HAS AMERICA HAD ENOUGH OF DOPE AND CHANGE.

Ornery,

I don't that is AlGore's biggest problem today. His biggest problems have lawyers involved in the solution - never a good thing.

That's a bad resume on his profile yet still he's very strong candidate. I just don't understand why him.
