President Obama this afternoon heralded the "overwhelming" UN Security Council vote on new Iran sanctions, saying the outcome shows that "actions have consequences."

"We know that the Iranian government will not change its behavior overnight," he said in a statement to the press this afternoon. "But today's vote demonstrates the growing costs that will come with Iranian intransigence."

Obama emphasized that they day "was not inevitable," coming after his administration pledged a willingness to "pursue diplomatic solutions to address the concerns over Iranian nuclear programs." He added as well that the vote does not rule out a new effort along those lines. The intransigence of the Iranian government left the global community with no choice, however.

"Actions do have consequences, and today the Iranian government will face some of those consequences," he said. "Whether it is threatening the nuclear non-proliferation regime or the human rights of its own citizens, or the stability of its own neighbors by supporting terrorism, the Iranian government continues to demonstrate that its own unjust actions are a threat to justice everywhere."

The Security Council resolution passed 12-2, with Turkey and Brazil dissenting. Obama said the outcome showed "strong international support," noting affirmative votes from Russia and China. He also noted that it comes just short of the one-year anniversary of Iranian elections that resulted in a disputed win by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, sparking deadly protests.

I am surprised that the sanctions passed in the UN. But like with Iraq will they be enforced?

Speaking of Iran and international criminals....

The Oil Spill and the Republican Hypocrisy

"And it is down right remarkable that the critics, include Republicans like Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who less that two years ago were joining Republican oil industry "expert" Sarah Palin in the juvenile Republican convention chant "Drill Baby Drill!". "Drill Baby Drill!" was not just intended to promote more offshore oil drilling. It was intended to mock Democratic concerns for the environmental impact of offshore drilling. It was intended to dismiss their opposition to drilling as stupid, "tree-hugging," anti-growth, "elite" concerns. It was intended to mock those who feared that offshore drilling would despoil our natural resources. It was intended to label them -- in the words of the late Republican Vice-President Spiro Agnew -- as "effete, nattering nabobs of negativism" -- part of the "chablis and brie" set that is completely disconnected from the lives of ordinary Americans who drink beer, work hard and get their hands dirty producing the products and the food we need in our everyday lives. And the real beneficiaries of the Bush-Cheney-Republican energy policy have not been ordinary Americans -- they are the giant oil companies that have become economic behemoths by encouraging the world's addiction to oil and preventing the development of energy alternatives that would end our dependence."

Actions have consequences? What are the consequences in this case?
.
Iran got a very stern tongue lashing and a slap on the hand. The sanctions merely "call upon" U.N. member nations to enforce certain trade and financial restrictions. There is not a freaking thing in the sanctions package that can't be easily circumvented.
.
Having said so, I do not believe this pyrric victory reflects poorly on President Obama. There is no way to do anything unilaterally to Iran without drawing a swift response from Iran's major trading partners, Russia and China. We need the cooperation of the "international community" to get anything done. Unfortunately, the international community (that we largely ignored during the Iraq war), is now reciprocating its apathy toward our views. If anything, the sanctions resolution only proves what a wimpy and worthless organization the U.N. really is.

Sanctions from the U.N.? Yawwwwwwn.

The Obama Regime had a chance to stand up for democracy in Iran last summer and passed. Iran will just delay and beofre you know it, they will have a nuclear missle point at Israel (which should make Helen Thomas happy).

I wonder what BO thinks of the news that alledgedly bin Laden has been holed-up in Iran for the last five years. Time for a predator drone to take a look.

Hey, sounds like obama learned another lesson today.
It'll be fun watching him and the democrats face the consequences of their actions.
So far so good, November will be another lesson and the final lesson in 2012!

The fourth round of toothless sanctions against Iran. What is interesting is the spin from the WH. Instead of admitting that the sanctions were (again) severely watered down by China and Russia, the WH is touting this as a diplomatic success. I'm not sure who they are trying to fool. It is definitely not the international community, who not only watched the US fail in getting meaningful sanctions, but also watched Turkey and Brazil take a not so subtle slap at the Adminsitration by refusing to go along with sanctions, refusing to abstain, and actually voting no. This is at most a step sideways, which has the effect of a step backwards because it buys more time for Iran to march toward a nuclear bomb.

H H H Halliburton: What does your post have to do again with UN sanctions against Iran? Way to stay on task. Nice Huffinglue re-post.

Overnight? Are you kidding? For 34 years we have been playing patty cake with Iran. They two years or less away from going nuclear. You think they care about another toothless UN vote? How many did the UN pass against Sadam? Dozens....

Obowdown, sit around and talk to your experts to figure out whose ass to kick. OH, I forgot. You are only tough on capitalism.

What the hell is Mustapha talking about now? This, I guarantee ya, is NOT “kickable a$$”.

So, whad-up? Time to talk tough again? When the Bar Keep sez “Django, that will be $3.50”. I say “$3.50!!!” as I give her my best Abe Lincoln. Practice. One needz to stay "in practice". We will have to call this “a practice”.

Actually, by putting those double negatives in there, you don’t know Not what the hell Mustapha may or may Not be Not talking about. Jes, again, sayn’.
