White House press secretary Robert Gibbs has garnered quite a few headlines this morning for acknowledging Sunday that Democrats' control of Congress could end in November.
"There's no doubt there are enough seats in play that could cause Republicans to gain control. There's no doubt about that," he told David Gregory on "Meet The Press."
It's important to point out that Gibbs did not outright predict a Democratic loss. But his comment served two purposes for the White House. First, it alerted the president's allies and past supporters -- should they not understand it already -- as to the stakes for the party in November.
"Do you want to put into the speakership of the House a guy who thinks that the financial calamity is tantamount to an ant?" Gibbs asked.
But more, it seems to be indicative of a campaign that's begun among Democrats to start lowering expectations about the November vote.
Covering the Governors Association conference in Boston this weekend, the Democratic incumbents running this fall were particularly candid about their chances. And, alerted to one handicapper's prediction that the GOP could pick up nine governorships, one source suggested that was at the low end of the scale.
The expectations game is a tricky one to play. Painting a gloomy picture for supporters could serve as a call to action, ratcheting up campaign efforts, re-engaging casual voters and spurring new donations. But overplay your hand and you could further dispirit the partisans who are already well aware of the stakes, and could interpret the statements as a white flag.
The other risk: that Republicans make more of your gamesmanship than you do. The party has happily flagged Gibbs' comment this morning.
"I think we're going to retake the House, as Mr. Gibbs suggested yesterday from the White House," House Minority Whip Eric Cantor told CNBC today.

News flash, people have already lowered their expectations (see the poll numbers for Congress). Only the rabid leftists support this government.

Don't you have that headline backwards? Wasn't it the Republican-Libertarian-T.Baggers, who, with their filibustering and obstructing, that forced our Congress not to do what was right for all of America. Ask the unemployed. Ask the states, who have been shut out on financial assistance, while the Oil Corps are getting all kinds of subsidies, not to mention the Weasels of Wall Street, Republicans, all. It is not that the Democrats have had to lower expectations, it is that the Republicans have made every attempt to sabotage President Obama's policies and programs, to get America's economy back on the road to recovery, driven off that road by the disastrous 8 years of the Bush&Cheney incompetence and malfeasance!!

Our Trollboy will no doubt blame the stupidity of the electorate for Republican gains. You may expect to read the standard rants about racism, rednecks and NASCAR, and how the Democtrats know whats best for the unwashed ignorami, but the unwashed don't.
.
I wish I had a dollar for every time I've read that sort of nonthinking comment in The Swamp.
.
I never understood this tack--you expect people to vote for your party when you insult them--calling them stupid--for not doing so. Not the best way to promote The Party of the People.
.
That's just one example of how the Democratic Party has been out of touch with the nation for well nigh half-a-century now.

If Republicans were going to make all of these massive gains this fall like they claim they are, they'd be up on the Dems by at least 10% by now.
I've news for ya, Repugs, you're still going to be where you belong after this coming November - the minority.

Today's Republican party is nothing more than a very thin veneer of lipstick sprayed on a pig of racism, greed, selfishness, xenophobia, and hate — all driven by fear, insecurity, and guilt/projection. Any so called "gains" they might make, won't last long.

What have the dems done? They have built a memorial to Ted Kennedy with a big ole 2275 page Health Care package that no one really understands. They have dramatically increased the deficit and deficit spending. Even the Socialists of Europe have said that they have enough deficits to last awhile. They are still pushing cap and tax. They still think that the earth has a thermostat somewhere that only they are smart enough to manage. They have created so much uncertainty that no one wants to make a commitment on investing or hiring. Is there any one specific thing that anyone could point to and say that it is substantially better than it was 18 months ago? Do you really want more of these fools dictating and dominating every minutiae of your existence?
You can’t shoot pool this badly and still command a table. Democrats like forms and paperwork. They got a lottttttt of catching up to do down at the unemployment kiosks.

Very well put. I'd like to take that proverbial pool cue and stick it up the Obama adm.'s rear!
That's what the voters plan on doing very soon come November.

The Bush Republicans need to be held accountable for their war of choice (Iraq) spending and their energy policy disasters: two messes we'll spend a generation cleaning up and paying for. We'll quit blaming the Bush Republicans 'only' when we get done cleaning up all of their messes (20-25 yrs from now), and not a day sooner.

Speaking of democrats, will the media hold them responsible for the bombing of an oil executive's wife? All the hate speech against the oil companies by BO, Biden, Salazar, and the rest of the democrats has incited someone to send a bomb to an oil executive. Will the Obama Regime call for a halt to the violence?

Oh my what a rant. I guess you're still getting your poll numbers from Daily Kos and MSNBC. And as we get near to fall a new documentary should be making its rounds. It's called "The Lottery" and you will show the teachers unions for what they really are. And along with the unions it will be showing how liberal democrats do not really care about the education of our children. And Steve a liberal calling anybody racist, greedy, hateful, fearful, or insecure just means so little today. See over the last 19 months those words have been used so often by liberals, their comrades in the mainstream media, and liberal elected officials they mean nothing. We already have one total loon (Don Fitzgerald) we do not need a second. Once more it was Obama appointees that approved the well that is now gushing oil in the Gulf of Mexico. It was also Obama appointees that fast-track that same oil well including approving all changes made to the safety system that failed. And we are also winding down Iraq which we have won by the way no thanks to this administration. In Afghanistan became Obama's war once he decided to totally change the strategy. And as you noticed well maybe you haven't noticed being a liberal. But the body count is going up under Obama's strategy I do remember how the liberals were so happy with a high body count when Bush was president. Now do you need the video proof and other links showing the Democrats in Congress fueling the housing bubble. Or how during the Clinton administration credit swaps market could have been regulated if not for Greenspan and his gang. I have video proof of the hearings and how the Democrats would have none of it. And your link is really pathetic.

Thanx Conservativemaster @ 3:36 p.m.. I’m working hard to stay kool, calm, and collected, but I would like to do the same thing. I often refer to these people as Socialists / Marxists, NOT to hype up the argument, but that is what THEY are. That IS their political ideology. They ~ Obama, Reid, Pelosi, et.ux. are clearly committed to their special brand of Socialism.
Paul Krugman, the pseudo-brilliant economist, with all of his impressive education credentials can’t seem to think any other way but to call for massive, overwhelming, non-sustainable government spending. Even the Nazis of Hitler’s Germany had some respect for the German industrialists and their workers because they needed them to advance their war agenda and monument building plans (to the glorious third Reich). THESE Socialists, THESE Marxists are not that smart.
I have always thought that the Awl Industry was in error for their unspoken / unwritten policy of buying off democrats. "Hopefully" they can see the fallacy of that kind of arrangement. Apparently the average, politically-neutral, American is beginning to see a whole lot of fallacy and error as well. Thanx.

Steve Lobber,
I somewhat get the Liberals Hate-On that they maintain for Sarah Palin. I’m not a big Sarah Palin fan, but certainly she would be a threat to the Obama Regime.
But what is it with the Liberals Hate-On for Glenn Beck? Glenn Beck, the inventor of Big Frog Radio (something Django should have thought up, but didn’t). Glenn Beck is often focused on the Founding Fathers and how distressed they all must be right about now. With Ambassador John Bolten as a witness, he boiled a polymerized frog to illustrate the slow but sure grip of Socialism on the American way of life. He had a guy dressed up in a Chairman Mao outfit standing by and waiting for a WH person to call on the dedicated Marxist phone. Most significantly, how can Liberals take offense if someone is showing a Liberal, Socialist, Marxist, democrat saying what Liberals, Socialists, Marxists, democrats say when they are among their friends.
Liberals need to lighten up and learn how to compete, learn how to make their argument, should they ever have one. Racism ain’t what it used to be. Jes sayn’.

It certainly can be defamation and libelous. For it to be libel, however, those “extremist views” would also have to be: (1) false with regard to the person to whom they are attributed; (2) injurious to the business, occupation or reputation of the person in whose mouth they were placed, (3) made without the exercise of due caution; and (4) actually result in measurable damage. (The foregoing is a bit of an oversimplification.) After reading all of the posts in this thread, I am not sure of the example to which you are referring in this instance. Who did Lobber mimic?

Don Fitzgerald,
You remind me of the failed occasion when I attempted to get my girlfriend of the moment to turn-on to the Pretenders. To her, it was just a bunch of loud, angry guitars in conflict. To her, it was not and never happening. You dems had your way with the Prince of Darkness and his master, Darth Vader, for 8 years and counting. If you think that we Republican Libertards, and our horse TeaBag are just going to bend over and grab ankles, then u can forget that. Not and never happening. The Socialists need to hold back some of those stimulus funds and get started on some gulags before they are ceremoniously dumped.

What you suggest that they should do, Django, is what precisely defines a liberal. Uptight to the point of having to resort to violence and gulags to enforce their failed philosophy, cannot compete, no critical thinking, manipulation through emotions, (of course they ALWAYS have the best intentions, because they care) using racism and promoting it for political and cultural purposes.

Free to Watch,
No disagreement here. I would never trust a Liberal to sort through good vs evil on my behalf at any level, and yet they will quote Voltaire and Justice Brandeis, as if THEY themselves, have some sort of moral bearing.
It is like Liberals have these automatic erogenous zones. You can always predict their reaction. On a good day, you can even predict their word for word response. The movie is a bad one when I can predict the dialogue. Then, when they figure the apolitical guy has just about figured them out, they redefine terms. Taxes become “contributions”. Abortion is “Pro-Choice”. War is “An Overseas Contingency Operation”. The most vile criminal is “a gentleman”. I especially hate that one. Reverse racism is “Affirmative Action”. At this point, a Swamp Liberal would be calling me a “doughy white Republican”. Not too bad, there. One out of three is correct.
There must be something good about Liberalism. I am just not sure what it is. My musician friend Alex, with the great jangly Latin rhythm, may be a Liberal. It would be hard to find a better person anywhere than Alex, but more likely he just hasn’t thought it through on any real philosophical kind of level. My musician friend, NY Tom, can play anything masterfully on the guitar and generate some good improvisational comedy all before a hat can hit the ground. Ask him about the wellspring of his deep love and affection for Hillary and 18 years of friendship is suddenly at risk.
There must be something good about Liberalism. The first three dimensions of Mathematics are the spatial dimension of length, height, and depth. The fourth dimension is space itself or time, depending on whom you are hanging with and how great their need is to confuse you. Then there is the fifth or perhaps sixth dimension featuring the attractional stuff like gravity, plasma, black holes, God only know what. Somewhere out beyond that is/maybe/possibly something good that could be said about Liberalism, but until someone can better define that, I do have to remain a skeptic. Regards.

Rob,
The Holder DOJ got the conviction and then walked away.
When none of the defendants filed any response to the complaint or appeared in federal district court in Philadelphia to answer the suit, it appeared almost certain Justice would have prevailed by default. Instead, the department in May, 2009 suddenly allowed the party and two of the three defendants to walk away. - THAT WOULD BE HOLDER.

Something good about Liberalism, hmmm...that's a tough one Django. I do believe that with a little practice, they will be able to bend the time space continuum (at least they will claim it ala Al Gore and tax you for it) due to their immense talent for twisting reality (ie the Truth).
For example: the Marxist Liberation Theology of Rev. Wright and our glorious Presidente, where they have hijacked the concept of individual salvation and twisted it to serve Marxist ideology as in the following example:
Another perversion is the concept of collective salvation. You've heard Barack Obama say that his "individual salvation depends on collective salvation." What does that mean?
According to liberation theology, it means that salvation and redemption bought by Jesus comes in the form of political and social "liberation" for minorities from white oppression. Salvation is realized with minorities achieving economic and political parity, via redistribution of wealth with whites. Minorities are "saved" in the sense that white people constantly confess and repent of being racists and meet the economic demands of minorities, via redistribution as a consequence of some form of reparations.
