Hoping to better insulate Obama, White House aides have sought to give other Cabinet officials a higher profile and additional public exposure. They are also crafting new ways to explain the president's policies to a skeptical public.
But Obama remains the colossus of his administration -- to a point where trouble anywhere in the world is often his to solve.
The president is on the hook to repair the Gulf Coast oil spill disaster, stabilize Afghanistan, help fix Greece's ailing economy and do right by Shirley Sherrod, the Agriculture Department official fired as a result of a misleading fragment of videotape.
What's not sticking to Obama is a legislative track record that his recent predecessors might envy. Political dividends from passage of a healthcare overhaul or a financial regulatory bill have been fleeting.

Teh difference between President Reagan and BO is that Reagan's policies had positive effects on this country unlike BO's. Compare the first four quarter's growth rate coming out of the 81-82 recession as compared to the past four quarter's of the 08-09 recession. The growth rate is anemic.

The LN would have only turned conflicts between third-rate countries into WWII sooner rather than later. By 1920, folks were quite glad to see him go. Sometimes this alleged intellect thing is quite over-rated.
Lincoln could not afford an over-rated, over-priced college education. He turned out quite well, thanks to the best step-mother anyone could have ever had. Harry Truman said “I’m outta here” to college. Churchill, a remarkable British P.M., had a period of bad academics. jimmy carter went to Georgia Tech. That apparently did no good for anyone. I believe in the stuff, but at the same time it has its limits.
My Real World observation is that you have to be able to somehow make a good first decision on whatever it is the problem is, and stick with it. These Hamlet types, like Obama, can, at best, talk the damn thing to death. A dog sniffing another dog is at least as capable as these elitist politicians. The dog will come to a reasonable decision at some point.
When Obama speaks, there are an awful lot of 4 and 5 letter words in his apparently limited vocabulary. Is this a good Harvard finished product? Somebody got rooked.
Here’s Obama’s bigger problem ~ He is an IDEOLOGUE totally committed to bad IDEOLOGY. Here, they don't pay sales taxes because they shop at swap meets, or outdoor malls, or shops that just don't charge sales taxes. There are thousands of them. If they happen to go to a department store where they are charged sales tax, they will stand and stare at the receipt and then argue with the clerk about the sales tax on the bill.
And, how exactly does an illegal "legally" pay state and local income tax? Under what Social Security number? The far majority don't make enough money to owe any taxes.

I know lots of folk in the over $250K bracker who are bemoaning the fact that they MIGHT not be able to remodel the summer house up on Lake Geneva. That mean Obama is going to make all the "nice things" a little harder to obtain/maintain.
I don't know that maintaining 2 or more homes is really doing the economy more good than a higher marginal rate on high bracket incomes.
OK, so they may not be able to maintain a 6 car garage or redecorate so often. I don't think that makes much difference.
The notion that Bill Gates and Buffett won't be able to help reinvigorate the economy also doesn't really ring true. In fact, Warren has said he doesn't think it is appropriate that his cleaning lady pays a higher effective tax rate than he.
There is a lot, and I mean A LOT, of money out there in the safe deposit boxes and other such places of the high bracket crowd. I really don't buy the argument that they're not "being entrepreneurial" because of "uncertainty" or because they are "already being taxed too much". Some of them are hoarding cash to see how cheap some assets they want may become before the depression, er, recession is over.
I think a lot of folk would be glad to pay a higher marginal rate if it helped the economy revive. Or even if it didn't. Maybe just to hire about 1000 more police for Chicago, or 100,000 for the country. Things like that.
Marginal rates used to be a lot higher. I remember when Ronnie lowered them. He also did sly stuff like mking credit card interest non-deductible. Cute little things like that to squeeze the middle class. (Yes, that interest used to be a deduction.)
Trouble with that Laffer curve: he's like Johnny-one-note. Too many other factors affect output and investment. It's not just a question of the marginal rate on high bracket incomes.

During the 1920's President's Harding and Collidge lowered the top tax rates from73% to 25% - economy roared.
Hoover raised the top tax rates back to 63% (along with Smoot Hawley) - cue the depression.
FDR follows by raising the top tax rate even higher in 1936 to 79% - cue the extension of the Great Depression.
JFK lowers the top tax rate from 91% to 70% - economy grows
Reagan lowers the top tax rate to 28%, economy booms.
President Bush lowers tax rate from 39.6% to 35%, economy grows for six years and has great unemployment.

I also remember immigration reform in 1986 where laws were passed making it illegal to hire an illegal immigrant.
