The Swamp

by Mike Memoli

For the first time in 18 months, President Obama sat down for a one-on-one meeting with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell yesterday. The White House had said the meeting would focus on the president's frustration with the Senate GOP over his judicial nominations and executive appointments.

Speaking with reporters this morning at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, McConnell said he viewed the meeting instead as the president acknowledging his diminished political capital.

"When he began this term he was sitting on a 70 percent approval rating, he had a 40-seat majority in the house on the way to getting 60 in the Senate. He didn't feel like he needed us," McConnell said. "Most people feel there's going to be a mid-course correction. The president's a very smart guy and I think he figures he'll be seeing a lot more of me in the future. I enjoyed our discussion and I look forward to seeing more of him."

McConnell also disputed the White House line that nominations were bogged down, saying that 92 percent of Obama's nominees have been confirmed, and the rest were in committees controlled by Democrats.

Senior White House adviser David Axelrod, in an interview on MSNBC this morning, said Obama and McConnell had a "constructive meeting," but that "the proof of the pudding is in the eating."

Speaking of the election, McConnell refused to offer reporters a prediction as to whether Republicans could pick up enough seats to recapture the majority. But he did say he looked forward to more balance in the chamber, something he said would allow for better collaboration -- on more favorable terms for Republicans.

"I'm not going to be very interested in doing things left of center. It's going to have to be center right," he said. "I think that the president's a flexible man. I'm hoping he'll become a born-again moderate."

McConnell said he and his counterpart in the House of Representatives, John Boehner, were working on putting forward a vision of how Republicans would govern in the new Congress later this fall. He seemed to concede that his party had room to improve it's public perception, even as he said it was likely Americans would back GOP candidates in greater numbers.

"You don't have to be in love to vote for somebody," he said. "I think the American people know who's been in charge for the last year and a half, they know that the conditions of the country are, and they know they need to go in a different direction."

Anyone in todays far right wing fringe Repug party (McConnell) who's complaining about any Dem not being moderate enough, is delusional.

Todays radical Republican party doesn't stand for anything other than raping the middle-class for their billionaire overlords and war-mongering.

I'm surprised they didn't try to filibuster Pres Obama's birthday yesterday.

Here's a great example of No Neck McConnell's 2010 Republican party showing off how "moderate" they are:

Rob, besides your odd fixation with the names of other posters, your problem is that you still think this is about Rs vs. Ds.

It's us vs. them, bud. Thinking like yours is what keeps the crooks in power. Wake up. Help the rest of us get rid of these people instead of whining all day.

Why would McConnell waste time talking to this lying, deceitful chicago politician.
You can't trust a thing obama says and the destruction he's causing will take years to repair, longer than it'll take to clean up the obama oil spill.
This is a war, don't waste time talking to the enemy. Just kick back, do little, cheat on your taxes like most democrats and wait for the change in November. Then you'll see the canidate in chief whine and cry for 2 years and then he'll be gone. First time in my life I'm not proud of my country, but then - I don't think many are anymore, embarassed is more like it - especailly those in the extra 7 states that obama thinks are out there.

Today's oxymoron:

"Moderate Republican"

A blast from the "Moderate Republican" past:

Terry Schiavo.

Do be quit, Mitch

Mitchy:

We all remember you leading the charge to keep Terry Schiavo in a permanent vegative state over her husband's objections. I suppose you think that level of Federal Government activity was "moderate."

Today's oxymoron, indeed, is "Moderate Republican." There hasn't been one of them in public life since GHWB (i.e., the one that's not an idiot).

Swamp Troll,
(just sayin', Equal time, Libtard, and whatever other fake names (see above) you're using today)

I'm loving the fact that Wingnutters like yourself are already dancing in the end zone and pouring champaign on yourselves over the outcome of this falls elections.

The Repugs will win back a few seats this fall, they've lost so many the past two elections that it would be nearly impossible for them not too. But when all is said and done this fall, the Repugs will still be the minority party and they'll lose all of those gains in 2012 because there's no way that Americans are going to go back to the Bush Republican days of tax cuts for Billionaires and phony wars (Iraq).

THE PARTY OF NO SPEAKS! Repent! Repent! Repent! Young President Obama! Repent for you have not sinned! We're the Party of NO! We're the Party of just "Hell NO!" Repent! Repent! Repent Young President Obama! For you have not sinned! Just like on August 5th, 2007 when Bush singed into law a 6 month revision of FISA! Just as the lawmakers where on their way out of town! Repent! Just like we did! Repent! Repent! Young President Obama! Have a dream about Global Warming. We will! We the GOP will! Have a SCOTUS dream of all dreams! Repent! Repent! Call Doug Feith! Call Judith Miller! Have dinner with "Ken Lay" discuss Grassley Bankruptcy bill for those "pesky" imploded "lenders." Review the Bush/Cheney McCain/Kyl "Dubai Ports deal." Repent! Repent! Repent young President Obama! Look into my eyes! Drink the "Troy Booty Palin" TEA! It's just $18,000 and comes with 501C(4) Donor List! Call Andrew Biggs! 20 Million "Z" people can't wait to pay into Social Security. Think of replacing the next Supreme Court "Vancancy" to Harriet Miers. Repent! Repent! 5.7 Trillion Dollars later, two wars and a collapsed economic economy. It was always about "civil rights" Mr. President! You were born before 1964, you don't "QUALIFY." It was always about the REAL ID! It was always about 20 million "unattested" "Z" Immigrants. So be "REBORN." Think GOP! Think TEA PARTY AMERICA! Think "Extremism" Think Beck! Think Hannity! Think Limbaugh! Just repent young President Obama! Or we will "Fillibuster" America back into the Woodrow Wilson days. Because Glen Becks said so!

a blinkin ,
The Pugs also want "big gubmit" to tell women what they can and cannot do with their own bodies (abortion). Their hypocrisy is stunning for anyone who pays attention to the differences between what they say and what they actually do.

Principled Repugs don't exist anymore, if they didn't have a monopoly on the conservative loving corporate media and the Right Wing Noise Machine they would cease to exist as a political party altogether.

It will be interesting to see what happens after the November Elections. IF the Republicans make big gains or even take control of one or both Houses of Congress, President Obama will be forced to move more to the Center and be more Bi-Partisan in his dealings with the GOP. If this does happen the Republicans will also be forced to move more to Center and cooperate more with the President. I believe Barrack Obama is a highly intelligent individual and an astute politician who knows how to win elections. Those that doubt this I suggest you look at the 2008 campaign that was probably the best run Presidential Race since those of Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984. . And if Obama has to move more to the Political Center to get reelected, he will do it. Remember that after the 1994 election many people thought Bill Clinton was dead in the water for 1996 Presidential Election. But Clinton moved to the Political Center, cooperated and worked better with the Republican Congress, and easily won reelection. Although I believe Obama will never move right of center as McConnell would like, (Only in Mitch McConnell's wildest dreams) if it is in his best political interest to get reelected Obama would move to just left of center. Only time will tell what the election results are and what happens.

Rob, Neither the Democratic or Republican Parties seem to have many moderates The Radical Left in the Democratic Party and the Radical Right in the Republican Party have run many moderates out. That is why many of the votes in congress on important issues have been almost straight party line votes. Many people that are in the Political Center or just Right of Center or Left of Center are frustrated with BOTH PARTIES.

depot jimmy,
Neither party has moderates? Hahaha! Hey jimmy, when are you going to quit falling back on false equivalency arguments in your defense of todays fringe Republican party?

It is hard to believe your party could fall so far in only about 150 years. You would think it would take longer.

Blinky,

No moderate republicans? Ever hear of Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins?

Trickled On,

I believe the gov't already tells a woman (and men) what they can do with their body. If you don't believe, go find a drug addicted hooker (I could insert an easy insult, but I'll leave that to you).

Poser Terri,

Wrong again, dopey. Diapers Vitter already proved that you can solicite a prostitute, have her diaper you and spank you...and still keep your job as a Republican Senator from La....and best of all - not get arrested.

Have your kids explain it to you, Biff.

A move to the center-right? Barrock Obama, a Leftist Ideologue whose time has come, moving to the Right? What are the odds?

The days of LBJ - Everett Dirksen are gone for good. Reagan was able to work with Tip O’Neil without compromising his principles. Old Tip wasn’t as dumb as he looked. Bush tried his damndest to work with Daschle. Daschle, in return, demonized the Prince of Darkness at every opportunity. Clinton was pragmatic enough to know that he had to dance with Newt. Clinton still gets credit for stuff that he would not have considered in his wildest dreams IF there had not been a Newt dragging his impotent presidency to the right.

Mustapha needs Bush, Cheney, and current Republicans to castigate and lecture to. Mustapha is like that college professor who adds absolutely nothing to the course of study because he always has to show you that he is on the cutting edge of the new-jack improbable. Mustapha is smug, “the election is over, John”.

Mustapha is the Big Kahuana. He knows all, seen all, done all, except that he hasn’t really done anything. Mustapha does, however, have his own fan club.

The process, and the product, are equally underwhelming.

The lefties have taken over the Democrats. They are soooo...far left that a moderate like George Bush is like Hitler to them. Bush's policies were very similar to what President Kennedy supported. In fact Kennedy was probably further to the right on many issues. I doubt that he would have compromised our nation's security just to appease Mexico like Bush did.

The left wing of the demo party is off the reservation. They are loons; totally fascist zealots. They hate Israel, love the Palestinians, hate descent, want total control, hate free markets, want government to be the market, hate themselves, want to be ruled over by overlords, basically they hate a lot of things: business, oil, freedom, guns, free speech, morality, Christians, liberty, the Constitution, and of course George Bush.

Right on Terry, soon the government will be telling fat asses like Rob how many calories he can eat in a day. Government healthcare will make you healthy or else.

And then there all those taxes and bans on cigarettes. But of course that's OK; those are taxes. The government regulates all kinds of things that you can do with you own body and Obama is just getting started.

So, it just depends who's in power. Remember that Rob. Someday your fanatical support of government will come back to bite you in your ample behind.

Trickled On Rob,

Is what Vitter did legal?

Moderate Republicans rule Tuberstan:

Their platform
1. Loyalty oath required
2. Conscience laws
3. State Militia
4. Stop healthcare reform
5. Repeal the 17th
6. Stop paying taxes to the Feds
7. Take over public lands

Terry:

You identified two of 41 Republican Senators as "moderate." That's about 5%. If we generously agree you left six out (can't think who they may be), that means a whopping 20% of the Senate Republicans are "moderate" (the 80% remaining, of course, are most immoderate).

And that's for the Senate, which is certainly the more moderate of the two Houses of Congress. No more than a handful of the Republican whack jobs there would even accept the "moderate" label, let alone action with moderation.

In short, thank you for proving my point that "Moderate Republican" is, if not an oxymoron, a nearly extinct species. If only the Repubs keep on the present course of losing the Hispanic vote with the anti-immigration stuff, and all swing voters with all the anti-gay stuff, this country will finally be rid of the "GOP" forever.

Rob, I do not know what you are drinking or smoking but you have a very narrow view of the Real World. The Democrats are just as bad as the Republicans, if not worse, at chasing moderates out of the Party. But in your narrow minded World it is always "Ugh" Democrats always good, Republicans always bad. But unfortunately in the Real World of American Politics Democratic Conservatives and Moderates have been pushed out of their Party, and Republican Liberals and Moderates have been pushed out of the GOP. There is more political polarization today than anytime since the end of World War II. Confirmation hearings, whether for a Democratic or Republican appointee, have become a political circus, and there are more almost Straight Party Line Votes in the Congress on important issues.
x
By the way Rob, did you finally figure our what a "Bellwether" State is in Presidential Elections? And Missouri between 1904 and 2008 falls into that category and is a "Swing State" that both the Democrats and Republicans Parties try to carry.

blink,
Yes, you are right, the TeqBaggers, libertarians, and con Republicans (same group) run AGAINST their moderate Republican opponents. The term 'moderate' is a pejorative.

Once again the con posters here have no credibility.

The "moderate" Reps voted for Elena Kagan. There were about 5 of them....

Read the New Yorker article on the dysfunctional Senate.

That photo of Mitch goes along with it nicely:

Mitch emerging from his Capitol "hideaway". The surroundings are more palatial than Buckingham Palace (and more insulated from reality).

What the Hell! McConnell is sitting with the Christian Science Monitor people. Let's get religion the hell out of our government. I'm sure that the evangelist's still have their office in the white house that George Bush put their. Let's get them out of our buildings and government and back to the churches where they belong. Moral majority my ass! whiteagle38
