While President Obama was on vacation, his West Wing office got a bit of a face lift, complete with a new rug, fresh wallpaper and paint, and new furniture -- all done at no taxpayer expense, the White House says.
Details of the renovation were released to the pool reporter this morning. The White House, it seems, took pains to ensure that new additions were American made -- including New York wallpaper and a Michigan-made rug.
That wheat, cream and blue colored oval-shaped rug has the presidential seal in the center, and is encircled by five quotes chosen by the president. Four of the quotes are from former presidents -- Kennedy, Lincoln and both Roosevelts -- with the fifth quote from Martin Luther King.
It replaces the rug designed by former First Lady Laura Bush for her husband (one that former President Clinton had seemed particularly fond of).
In an interview on MSNBC this morning, press secretary Robert Gibbs described the renovations as "very modest."
"Each president puts his stamp on the office," he said. "None of the modest changes that were done inside the Oval Office were done at any taxpayer expense, much like they've been done by previous presidents."
The changes were paid for by the White House Historical Association, which received a donation from Obama's Presidential Inaugural Committee.
We may get a brief glimpse of some of the changes tonight when the president addresses the nation from the room. You can see the full details from the pool after the jump.

(The Oval Office, before renovations)
Oval Office renovations:
* New and reupholstered furniture, new paint and wallpaper.
* New rug produced and donated by a Michigan-based business and paid for by the non-profit White House Historical Association through a contribution from the Presidential Inaugural Committee. (This fund is being used to pay for the design costs of numerous rooms at the White House including the Oval Office, Yellow Oval Room, Center Hall and West Sitting Hall.)
* The existing furniture in the Oval Office will remain the property of the White House and will be placed in a storage facility.
* Oval Office walls were covered with handmade striped wallpaper produced in Amagansett, N.Y. The trim around the Office was re-painted with American-made Benjamin Moore paint custom-mixed by Donald Kaufman Color.
* The new wheat, cream and blue colored oval-shaped rug is made of 25 percent recycled wool. The rug has the Presidential seal in the center and historical quotes of meaning to President Obama around the border. The rug was made and donated by the Scott Group, an American carpet manufacturer headquartered in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Scott Group previously made the Oval Office rug designed for former President Bill Clinton as well as rugs for the White House State Dining Room.
* President Obama selected the following five historical quotes for the rug:
"The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fear Itself" -- President Franklin D. Roosevelt
"The Arc of the Moral Universe is Long, But it Bends Towards Justice" -- Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Government of the People, By the People, For the People" -- President Abraham Lincoln
"No Problem of Human Destiny is Beyond Human Beings" - President John F. Kennedy
"The Welfare of Each of Us is Dependent Fundamentally Upon the Welfare of All of Us" -- President Theodore Roosevelt
* Armchairs: The two mahogany arm-chairs in front of the fireplace, previously used by President George W. Bush, were reupholstered with a caramel-colored leather.
* Desk Chair: The President's brown leather desk chair was produced in New York.
* Coffee Table: The coffee table is made out of American walnut and mica by a New York company.
* Couches: The couches in the Oval Office were custom-made in New York. The fabric, a custom-made light brown cotton with red, white and blue threads running through it, was woven in Pennsylvania.
* Lamps: The two new table lamps have blue ceramic bases and were produced in New York.

Yeah, it's in desperate need of a personnel makeover also.

Hopefully, the vacationer-in-chief will get his lazy butt in the oval office and start working for the will of the people, instead of against.
...and try to keep the place clean for the next President in 2012.

Trashed the Oval Office like everything else. Looks like a hotel room now, but that would be consistent with BO's little regard for the Office.

Doesn’t look like much work is taking place, not a single piece of paper or even a pencil. A clean desk is the sign of a sick mind.

So who did pay for the upgrades if the "WH says no taxpayer funds spent on upgrades"?
As I recall that all government spending comes from "TAXPAYERS". So which non-taxpayers are paying for this remodel?

Well, as long as the vacationer-in-chief continues to visit the golf course and take Marie Antoinette Obama on trips, he's not around to screw up the country even more.
Let him have his vacations, and let him have them often.

Now, to be fair to the President, his desk is cleaned off every night by staff so that it looks nice for west wing tours. That has been true for every president. So to blame him for a clean desk is just silly -- there's enough real stuff to blame him for without fixating on something trivial.

Government of the people, by the people and for the people? As if he really believes that. His phrase should be, government of Obama, by Obama and for Obama.
The one that really fits is the one by T. Roosevelt, since it rejects the role of the individual.

The Oval Office makeover should be re-made over! The office looks so 'uninspired' and 'colorless' (no pun intended) that I think that Obama's attitude toward the presidency is reflected in his choice of furnishings! It does not look like a room where he will be spending much time in! Vacation, again, anyone?

I am not a supporter of President Obama, but I see nothing wrong with his making non-taxpayer modest renovations to the Oval Office. It is my prayer that the next occupant in January 2013 will restore Christian honor to his office and have a literal interpretation of the Constitution and fight to restore fiscal soundness to our nation's budget. A balanced budge amendment would solve many problems. God help us to wake up.

Everything is drab like that old cream colored paint you find in run down older homes, except browned by age and mildew.

Fox links do not dominate Drudge on any day I've ever been there. Drudge never seems to post anything of his own. It all is links to the normal media outlets.

Be against and thing you want but please be fair. This kind of trashy thinking and comment is beneath us. BTW I came here through Drudge too.

It's a good thing that Obummer can take the furniture that was bought with private money with him when he leaves on January 20, 2013. I'm concerned about how the stench will be removed from the carpets and upholstery elsewhere in the White House before the new president moves in later that day.

I like the idea of using quotes around the rug, but I'm not really a fan of the overall look. The Oval Office is a formal room and everything that was changed makes it much more casual looking. I see why people think this looks like a hotel room. The wallpaper really gives a different look, but I'm not sure I like it. The President has the right to decorate it however he wants. So if he likes it, then I guess that's all that matters.
Posted by: MDSeverin | August 31, 2010 1:02 PM
I hope now he will show some respect and keep his feet off the furniture.
Posted by: Sheryl | August 31, 2010 1:03 PM
Aren’t the donations by companies such as the ones described in the article tax deductible? If indeed they are then is like borrowing from Paul to pay Peter. I agree it does look like a nice hotel suite but, if that is choice so be it. Personally; the center table does look like it came from J.C. Penney, then again it is my preference. It is a shame that more mementos and personal items from previous Presidents are not kept in the Oval office. I am sure dignitaries in many other countries have offices with much more character, because of the richness in history manifested in such items.

Good decor for public housing, which it is.
No one has ever accused the Obamas of having good taste.
Posted by: Panther Goodshaft | August 31, 2010 1:13 PM
It's okay. I think the pallette lacks contrast but is in keeping with the prarie-style of simplicity. Keep in mind F.L. Wright was keen on a fusion of prarie and art-deco. By muting the pallette to a more wheat and woods pallette it exerts a need for calm. Perhaps as CiC with the political climate a more muted pallette is appropriate. Drab can also be called dull, soothing, calm, and boring. Tastes are tastes. I would have gone with a darker trim color to pull in the end tables and the desk more. The sofas are a nice touch but the colors in the wall and sofa don't tie well enough into the carpet. B- for the decorator.

Since Barry can't do business in D.C, (only over at NBC, CBS, or ABC) it's fitting his newly renovated “model” Oval office is in mint condition for show to the paying tourists. His actual “oval office” is a set located on the NBC back-lot so his hair, makeup, and spoon fed lines can be read picture perfect to the lunatic fringe who actually buy his garbage.

We have serious problems in this country -- let's have a serious discussion about REAL issues. I'm appalled at not only the lack of intelligence and information about real topics, but the knee-jerk reactions that are going to accomplish exactly nothing for the people. Talking to people in this country is a lot like dealing with a 2 year old. You all ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Would you allow your children to be so hate-filled and disrespectful to ANYONE? What gives you the right to judge the man's furniture for God's sake?! How do conservatives expect to have any credibility on the issues when they display this level of maturity about a remodel? What happened to, "If you don't have anything nice to say, keep it to yourself."? And then they try to own the "moral high-ground". It could only be hatred towards their president that would incite this. Honor?

Seriously people? SERIOUSLY? This is what it's come down to? The guy puts a rug down and there are dozens of comments about Mecca and whether it meets your definition of taste?! Judge his politics, vote him out of office, donate to Palin 2012, whatever....but let's try to bring the conversation up at least one level from this spite-filled gutter.

Even though I am a conservative I think it looks fine. I think it could use some openness though its a little closed in. I also think some bookshelves would look nice. The weaved carpet is stupid though seriously.
BTW diggndirt54: If you will hearken back to a speech President Bush made, he was the one who redesigned the Presidential seal to have the eagle facing towards the olive branches. He said it was because we wish for peace but maintain the ability to respond if provoked. So you need a little history brother, and Obama has actually shown us here that he agrees with Bush OMG!!! The liberals are gonna freak out, Obama agrees with Bush on the olive branches in the seal!! holy crap!!

I find it very interesting that the color yellow was selected for the commander and chief. Yellow represents cowardice. "Yellow journalism"....unreliable and of poor quality. How fortuitous! I find it very fitting!
Posted by: momcasmi | August 31, 2010 1:38 PM
It's interesting the eagle on the desk is looking one way while the eagle in the carpet is looking the other. Obama's eagle on the floor is looking to the 'peace' of the olive branches while the desk eagle is looking toward the arrows of war. It would be nice if our President could find the will to accept we are at war (21 soldiers died in the past 48 hours) and apply himself to win our war against terror. For me, this is the clearest illustration of his thinking on how he perceives himself as one who does not accept the adage of "peace through strength".

Looking at all the photos, I get it.
The tonality show off the antiques.
Particularly the Resolute Desk.
O, and the joker who said the Eagle was looking the wrong direction:
Congress has not declared war, so the Eagle turns away from the arrows.

Worst president ever definitely belongs to the current leader. Noone in the history of our country has destroyed 200+years of freedom in such a short time. By the time he leaves office we will virtually be France, if not Russia.

Why is it everytime they show the Resolute desk he has his feet on it? Reagan would not even take his jacket off in the Oval office out of respect for the office and the men who served before him. One term for Obama

Some of these comments are laughable, others are tragic, but my favorite ignorant comment is the request for "Where is the flag of the United States?" Especially since three of the photos show it right next to the commander in Chief's desk where it has resided for many generations.
Overall I have to say it seems plain to me but that may be what the President needs to let him concentrate on his work day so it's good with me. After all, he has to work there not me why should I care that his taste is not mine so long as it doesn't make my nation look foolish. For all of those who don't read the article before posting, it correctly says the renovations were paid for by a foundation which has paid for the same service for every president as long as I have been alive.
This is just an information piece no one should be bent out of shape to see that the President of the United States of America has updated his own office to suit his own taste just as every other President before him has.
Really all I can say about the new look is, nice enough but a little dull for me.
Posted by: Justaguy | August 31, 2010 1:59 PM
Let's not let contempt for Obama cloud all common sense. Just because he has now surpassed Jimmy Carter as the Worst President in US History, doesn't mean we have to tear down the decorator (not POTUS) who did this. Personally, I think it's nice and & soothing, well all except for putting striped wall paper with floral drapes. That's tacky & fad-ish, but it seems a lot of designers are doing this. Makes you wonder if they dress the same way, or whether they show more sense in their personal wardrobes.
The faux suede fabric on the couches might look better if they steamed the puckering and wrinkles out of the skirts. Now, it just looks kind of messy. There is nothing wrong with the color scheme, it's just neutral. Personally, I'd replace the striped pillows with something a little more rich & bold to 'pop' in accents.

JustAGuy@1:29 PM The economy was in the crapper long before even the election so don't try to revise history. GWB happened to follow one of the best presidents ever, William Jefferson Clinton. And before you get into his Monica issue tell me how many times Newt or Rush has been married? Even McCain admitted he cheated on his 1st wife. GWB went to war on false pretenses. He makes James Buchanan look like FDR in comparison. Let's be totally honest with ourselves and agree GWB was a terrible president. Good, we all agree about that! Now you expect Obama to clean up that mess in a year?? Come on and be realistic. It doesn't look too bad, but the most noticeable difference is the startling change from a "light and air and sunshine-filled" to dark and somber and not sunshine-filled.
While I confess that I can't stand Obama, I think this truly says something about him; he is a dark figure in many ways beyond the color of his skin (which is immaterial in any regard).

EMS13:
Since you have numbers of days for Presidential vacations, how about adding some information on where the "vacation" was spent? I suspect that you are comparing GWB's time at Camp David and his Crawford, Texas ranch to Obama's junkets to New York City, Maine and Martha's Vineyard.
Both Bush and Reagan had offices in their personal ranches that were set up for all the security and communication equipment necessary to do their job away from the White House. If they needed staff meetings, they took the staff with them. They also entertained heads of state. They were working vacations - not travel and leisure.
You must also have the numbers for the first 7 months of the second year in office. I'm curious about why you didn't include them!
I realize that it's a tough job for Obama Kool Aid drinkers to justify his work habits, but you volunteered for the job - just like he did!
Posted by: Oregonian | August 31, 2010 2:21 PM
A little lacking in color but it's not bad. Other seasonal decorations won't clash with anything in room, be easy to work around from a decorator standpoint. Now, that oval Presidential seal ... a quote from a non-U.S. president seems inappropriate. Were there no other former U.S. presidents throughout American history who said anything that could pass muster with the current President? The MLK quote might have meaning to Obama but out of respect to former and future United States presidents, seems the Presidential seal should be reserved to commemorate U.S. presidents.

No one cares about Obama, because he's a junior senator from Illinois and nothing more. He's out on vacation because he simply doesn't know what to do when he's in the White House. He's out of place. It's like when a freshmen high school class visits a college. The kids walk around the university but they feel completely out of place. The kids know they're years away from being qualified to go to this university, and they know they're just there looking around.
Same with Obama. He knows he got in there due to the color of his skin, and because he wasn't Bush. That's it. And so he goes golfing. He can't do anything about the economy, because he doesn't know what to do or how to do it. He might know how he screwed it up, but he may not actually realize that, yet.
So he goes on vacation. THAT'S one thing he knows how to do - goof off.
He's a token president and he knows it. And we all know it. And that's why the years 2009-2012 will be known as the disastrous Obama years.
You can't say anything more about 2009-2012 because you'll be labeled a racist if you say it like it is.
Nice remodeling job. I like the way you picked the fabrics and colors. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer but, you know, he's doing the best that he can so give him a break. Cut him some slack.

Doesn't look too bad...a little bit bland and boring...the stripe wallpaper cheapens the place...plain vanilla walls would hold the digity of the office...the stripes make the place looks like an informal setting...also, the couch and all the earth tones make the place dated, almost 1970s like...as someone would say, gee, it looks like a sitcom set...The carpet looks alright but I like the Reagan and the Sunburst carpet a lot more...Clinton's blue carpet was also very nice, add the seriousness of the office...although that blue color would drive people crazy after a while...I don't like GHWB's light ocean blue carpet, just too dated...so this new carpet is in the mid-range I would say...overall, it's ok, not over the top, a bit boring, and too bad with those wallpaper...this office deserves a lot more gravitas than a sherwin-williams wallpaper...they could have chosen some wallpaper with fine texture or patten, that would be much nicer than this wide stripe 1970s like stuff...lack of seriousness, kinda lack of soul...
Posted by: Alison | August 31, 2010 2:31 PM

The point is most of us just want to work and be with our families. The lefties took advantage and got this brain dead fool elected so they can take our country. Yeah shame on us. But it won't happen again! The real/majority of Americans are pissed and will take this country back and we don't care about being sensitive or caring either. You either an American or your not. You pick which side you want.

Bush had the eagle facing the Olive branches for his entire Presidency on the presidential seal. My fellow conservatives need to shut up.

As a "Right Wing Nut-Job" and came from Drudge Report, I see nothing wrong with this. I don't agree with this president probably 98% or more of time, but if every president does this and don't use tax money, he has every right to. I think it looks elegant and don't let my political views get in the way.
The first question that popped into my mind was "Did he remove anything that has deep historic value?" It looks like he didn't, so that settles it and now I can worry about the real problems, the damage he's doing to this country.
Posted by: BillinCA | August 31, 2010 3:05 PM
Wow... An article about the same type of renovations done by almost every president brings out the nut jobs...
Would you have rather had Mr. "Our economy, I think, is still -- the fundamentals of our economy are strong." (Woops - there it goes) in there?

With all the crimes he's committed since being put into office, (Read David Limbaugh's new book) Obungle may be impeached next year, so we won't have to look at this decorating disaster much longer.
Posted by: Obungle | August 31, 2010 3:10 PM
I am not an Obama supporter nor would I ever vote for him. Fearing the worst in this redecoration, I can say that it looks fine and in good taste. I would not have had the quotes around the rug. It does not look like MRO made the choice of the colors like she does her clothes. Thank God for that!
Posted by: Aldinsgirl | August 31, 2010 3:14 PM
I'm surprised he didn't decorate it as a replica of a golf course, with the 18th hole in the middle of the office. This way he can practice his putt shot instead of ruining...er...I mean running the country.

Except for the Presidential seal, the carpet, couches, and coffee table look straight from the lobby of a Marriott hotel. At least the taxpayers didn't pay for it.
Posted by: Will | August 31, 2010 3:22 PM
"'Each president puts his stamp on the office,' he [Gibbs] said." I'm sure of that. I saw the picture of Obama leaning back in his chair with his big brogans up on the antiques Resolute Desk in the oval office. He has little regard for America except for the trappings he receives as President. And, it probably was renovated with political donations from 'friends'---probably trying to insure special treatment from the government.

The oval office now looks bland, just like its occupant. By the way, if there's an error in the eagle in front of the desk, blame Great Britain. It was the UK who build the desk from the wood of the Resolute to give to America. Rutherford B Hayes was President at the time. Most presidents, with a few exceptions, have used the desk since then. But Obama is the only one I know of who sits back in his chair and plants his scruffy brogans on the top of the Desk. Who else but him would show such disrespect for the American property?
Posted by: tnmccoy | August 31, 2010 3:36 PM
Surprisingly well done. I like it. I'm amazed that they were able to keep michelle, the first clown of fashion, out of it. Probably why they did it while shewas "vacationing". I was looking forward to some sub saharian finger painting to be included as "priceless art". The desk reminds me of a great story. A fantastically successful print broker I worked with had an office that was a total mess. Had a sign on his deskthat said,"If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind. what is signified by an empty desk"?
That's our prez.

Personally I don't think it's all that great. I much prefer the original look.
It's not a modern house so why try and make it that way.
If they truly wanted to spruce it up. It should have been done with the traditional wallpaper that fits the era of the house itself.
Who paid for this anyway ? If we the public did , we didn't get to vote on it.

Does that office seem Presidential? At least the office of an American President. No. It looks more like the office of the Indonesian President.
Whatever. It can be changed when he is booted out of office in 2013. And they can redecorate it again. What Americans should be concerned with is what type of long term damage he can do and wrecking his office literally is not a concern. The figurative wrecking of the office i a concern with all his bowing, appeasement, is still a concern but it will just be on him, not the office of the presidency.
So as long as he doesn't nuke the United States we should be okay.

You know, all this about how Obama was handed a failing economy... well guess what? So was GW Bush. Capitalism has its up periods and its down periods. The trick is to leave it the hell alone. Politicians try to slow the drop or speed up the growth - and all they do is lengthen the lows and shorten the highs.
Obama picked up an economy with positive growth, but not the 7 years of record growth under Bush. And what did he do? 7 quarters of near zero growth. Trillions of borrowed money. Obama failed.
Clinton did not handle the economy any better. Clinton did not run an surplus, ever. That's a line of BS and the media repeat it as if its true.
If Clinton ran a surplus then the National Debt went down under Clinton. Did it? No, it did not.
Ad what that mean is - Clinton ran a budget deficit every year he was in office. Same with ever president since the 1960's.
Please don't go to Google and post a link to a graph showing the "Clinton Surplus". There was no surplus. The National Debt increased the entire Clinton presidency.
If this is a surprise to you - do some research. I suggest you look at the National Debt, year by year. Good place to start your research (and finish it).
Obama is running up the National Debt like no other president. It's reckless. It's something a president does when he's never managed a budget nor run any type of business. Obama hasn't so much as managed a Dairy Queen, and a group of geniuses put him in office.
Yes he's the president. Get over it? What does that mean? Accept ever4ything he does while smiling and applauding the whole time? No thank you. Obama is juvenile and many, many Americans know it.
Come November - Obama is going to get the shock of his life.
American are against this crazy stimulus spending - Obama is for it. Americans are against the Nationalization of Banks - Obama is for it. Americans are against the Nationaization of the Auto Industry - Obama is for it. Americans are against Illegal Aliens - Obama is for them. America is against the growth of entitlement programs - Obama is for it.
And the list goes on.
Obama is president so get over it? No thanks.
Obama is the president so every good American must do everything in his/her power to stop Obama and correct this terrible mistake!
Here comes 2010, and 2012.
Anyone but Obama.

The sofas are much, much too casual -- along with the "heather" two-tone beige of the rug background. That's why everyone says it looks like a den/family room or hotel. The contemporary coffee table looks like a fish out of water.
Camel-back sofas with exposed walnut trim, upholstered in something FORMAL, along with a classic, knock-em-dead antique coffee table (rosewood w/brass or gold trim?) could make this room work for the Oval Office. Surely the White House furniture storage vaults have a dozen pieces better than this coffee table!
As it stands, Obama chose comfort over dignity, just as Michelle does in choosing her wardrobe.
Posted by: C | August 31, 2010 4:32 PM
The Presidential seal hasn't been changed in ages, including under President Bush, and, at least according to snopes.com, it's simply not true that the eagle faces the arrows in times of war. (See http://www.snopes.com/history/american/turnhead.asp.) Also, if I'm not mistaken, the desk seems to be facing north, not toward Mecca (which would be to the East-Southeast presumably), and the American flag is clearly visible. (Sigh.)
Posted by: Tim | August 31, 2010 4:32 PM
I think it was a tactical choice. He can bring his political enemies in there, and the ugliness and drab color scheme break their wills as effectively as the depressing motel lobby after which it is modeled. Well, either that or he let Michelle run the remodel. She wears a lot of designer clothes, but she has a very poor aesthetic sense for what actually looks good on her. Laura Bush dressed much better than she did. Condoleeza Rice dressed much better than both.

One thing about Ronnie: he did have a sense of decorum.
FDR: for sure, did not put feet on desk....
Truman: always dressed like he just stepped out of a hat box..., so , no feet.
Eisenhower? Noooo.
JFK: probably not, but had a rocking chair for his back injuries.
Nixon put his feet on the desk, as did Ford. Not sure about Carter, but probably not. Reagan: doubt it.
GHW Bush: probably did, but not in the presence of photographers.
Clinton: not only feet on desk but used kneehole, er, not the way JFK did as place for Jon Jon to play, but for older playmate....
Bush II: gave finger to photogs sitting at the Resolute; no need to go further.
Probably not a good idea to be photographed with feet on Resolute, or with a drink, or smoking
Obama is always held to a higher standard than his predecessors.
He is always flying into a 6 + % headwind because of his race.

First, lets stop with the vacation talk. President Bush had over a 100 days of time spent at the Crawford Ranch at this moment compared to President Obama's 33 days of vacation. Second, everyone that is complaining about the budget, President Bush took a budget surplus and made it a deficit. That is just a fact. Now, President Obama hasn't helped it too much, but it isn't just his fault. Last, anyone that is 65 or over gets medicare. I find it funny that people protesting healthcare don't want tax payers paying for other's but will gladly take medicare, which is paid for by tax payers.

If I read correctly, when Jacqueline Kennedy started her "restoration" of the White House in the Spring of 1961, Congress passed a law specifically declaring the White House as the property of the American citizens. It is nice to know that WH Oval Office furniture and other artifacts are being placed "into storage." But what about the bust of Churchill which Obama so unceremoniously dispatched directly back to Great Britain the second he "moved in."? These people have no taste, no class, no understanding of American culture and certainly no understanding that they are a pathetic pair of pretenders. Can't wait to see the official portrait of the Empress M.

And look who has the gall to talk, after 8 years of that waste of space Bush who was on vacation for a living, cleaning up brush on his ranch and not being around on 9/11 or when Katerina hit, or for that matter to address any issue of importance. But let's keep trash talking about Obama, you jerks! You want to continue f-ing up this country go for it! You're doing a great job, you right wing nut jobs!!!

From the desk view out to the couches: the composition of the item placement skews significantly left-a subliminal reflection, hmm? The materials and trade companies used are expensive and the result is mediocre at best. There is an adage: money does not buy taste. The neutrality of the office should enhance negotiations- however, I think the end result will be more naps taken by critical parties. Maybe that is the intended method of negotiations from our current administration- to have opposing parties dozing off?
The room is crying out for help! From my assessment it is an epic fail.

Come on guys, every President remodels the White House and goes on vacation every week in the midst of a Democratic-caused depression! Besides, Democrats consider any money spent as 'stimulus'- re-doing roads that didn't need to be redone was 'stimulus', so redecorating the WH and going on trips to Spain just counts as 'stimulus.' If you don't like it, vote all the Democratic bums out.

There's that Budget Surplus "fact" again. Except it is not a fact, it's fiction. There has never been a budget surplus since the 1960's. If there were a budget surplus - then the National Debt would have gone down. Do you understand what you just read? If the answer is Yes, then you have to realize there was no budget surplus under Clinton.
You have to think about it to understand it. You can't just Google budget surplus and then see a graph and say "I told you".
Go to the US Treasury website. Look for yourself at the National Debt. Look at it during the Clinton years.
It goes up, every year.
Budget surplus - National Debt goes down.
Simple stuff.

Thanks for putting up the photo of how it looked before the re-do.
Yes, OO 2.0 is less formal, more "personal" and intimate.
Takes a very self-confident man to OK that much of a change.
Or woman.
Since the main purpose of the OO is to persuade any and every visitor to do something the President wants done, we'll see how this works out.....
Only quibble: coffee table doesn't quite seem right.....

Well since the president is obviously not opposed to any publicity he can get or diminishing the office of the Presidency. I think that he deliberately made the oval office into boring room so that he can justify calling in Extreme Home Makeover. Plus Mr. President needs all the TV face time he can get, so that all of the pesants feel close to him. Didn't you realize that the reason his pole numbers are going down is because he hasn't been on TV enough for his adoring public to realize how enlightened he is?

Hussein Obama, I wonder how you would react if the commenters used the sort of vitriol that YOU routinely during 8 years of non-stop lying about GW. The comments here don't even come close to that.
It doesn't really matter, though: your fellow traveler/morons (i.e., the "dems" in Congress) will lose their majority as a result of the upcoming elections in November 2010, and your messiah will be back hustling the streets of Chicago after the elections in 2012. Another obama priority should be to hide those unsightly lamp cords - like appoint an acorn committee to figure out how to run a cord into the table from the base of the lamp and through the inside of the table down one of the legs to a concealed electrical outlet in the floor covered by the table leg. Change can be challenging.

Wow. The comments made here are embarrassing. I am a Democrat, I don't agree with the President on everything, but I try to be respectful. That being said, I am not going to pretend that the opposite end of the spectrum wouldn't be saying the same hateful comments if there were a Republican in the White House.
I am not a fan of the new look. I think, like many people here, it looks like a hotel lobby. I think the Oval Office should have a very formal and official presence. I thought Laura Bush designed an inspiring and commanding rug. I don't hate the new rug (good time to point out the eagle has been facing the olive branch since 1945. Obama didn't try to pull a fast one on you guys.) I was never a fan of the couches used previously, but I liked them better than the new ones. I thought that the ivory colored walls and doors gave a powerful and classic look to the office - wallpaper was a bad idea. I like the curtains the Bush's picked out, however, they don't go with the new look. I don't love the executive chairs by the fireplace, I would have gone with a powerful red, which, ironically, seems to be one of his favorite colors.
I will say that I wish the President had a "suit coats must be worn at all times" policy for the Oval Office. I also understand the urge to put your feet up, but lets try not do it on a historical desk. If you do it - don't let the White House pool photographer publish the photo!
I am glad to see the President make the office uniquely his, but I think he could have gone a better direction.

Fabric changes, furniture changes, etc. This a genuine makeover, and a fairly refined one, at that--though I prefer the former rug and wall treatments.
History Channel ran a series about the makings and daily life at the White House. The President's home is a true national treasure. I have no problem with the Oval Office being redesigned to give the President the most comfortable environment to make the most important decisions. He doesn't need to be distracted by the Bushes' taste.
For the record, I vote financially conservative, and I linked here from Drudge.

Posted by: Paul Williams | August 31, 2010 7:12 PM
As a former designer, this redo strikes me in several ways: 1) The pervasive use of neutrals is indicative of those who are insecure about COLOR; 2) The neutral scheme also shows an affinity for the "furniture store" and "McMansion" look....historic American architecture and interiors were unabashedly COLORFUL!; and, 3) as one poster said, it looks like a sterile hotel room or lobby!
I find it particularly interesting that the patriotic colors are relegated to an almost imperceptible role....red and blue "threads"? Give me a break!
The traditional use of yellow in the O Office symbolizes the rising sun over our Republic...it has tremendous symbolism.....go look it up!
I give this makeover an F-!!!
Sigh....

The gold, improved rug, incorporating famous quotes from famous Americans, the updated coffee table, and leather chair and couch. It looks more comfortable. So, after the next election Obama has a new vocation ahead of him as an interior designer. Other than that I disagree with 98% of his policies. What?? Where the hell did you study economics - or arithmetic for that matter? A budget surplus refers to the yearly national budget. The national debt is an accumulated total of money owed plus interest. Think of it this way - you have monthly expenses like a mortgage, food, gas, etc. You also have $10,000 in accumulated debt that you are making payments on every month. Let's say your current paycheque covers it and you have nothing left at the end of the month. Then you get a $200 per month raise. If your expenses stay the same you now have a buget surplus of $200 per month - but your accumulated debt does not go down just because of the surplus.
Simple stuff.

It isn't a bad decorating job, just less formal. I do not like the sofas, but that fabric is less likely to show wear. He didn't change it that much, he just has a casual style and Americans tend to think the Oval Office should be very formal. Ironically, it looks very ranch like and more of the personality of the previous Pres. As for the coffee table-Ugly, but the lamps are exquisite! I think the striped wallpaper is ultra-traditional and formal and I like it, but everything else is way too casual so I don't like the combination.

I continue to be shocked at the un-American, hateful, dishonest, lazy and smug comments directed at President Obama. So much of what is said is patently false and demonstrably incorrect, but honesty seems to have no value among the know-nothings hiding their bigotries and ignorance behind the flag and false claims of what America is.
He's not a Communist or a Muslim, and he has not taken the time away that GW Bush did.
With that said, the room has not been improved. Sorry, Mr. President.

Did the first lady really just post on this website?? I imagine they are more in touch than we suspect. It is not suprising to me that the majority of these posts are critical of the Obama administration. So if she is positing...the question is 1)Are they/she reading the posts, and 2) do they care?? My own conclusions bring me to the answer no. I pray the United States returns to God (whomever that is to you) and we find it within ourselves to take back the honor our country has known so well in the past. Being an American still means something to people all over the world, but through 24/7 media the American people have been demonized. We are NOT what the media tells us! We still can be the country of our founding fathers, but we must return to the small-government of the constitution and most importantly God!!!!

I don't have any real opinion of the office. I don't think it's anything special but rather blah. However, this is the people's house and this is suppose to be the official/formal office of the President of the USA. Having said that, the family pictures on the credenza behind the desk are inappropriate. They belong in the living quarters. If he wants to display something, let it be pictures and/or busts of great American heroes!

Most of us think of the oval office as our calling card to the world. This remake is as uninspiring, dull and boring as he is. This is just another low point in his dismal job performance. He still doesn't understand that it is our creativity and can do attitude that has made us a world leader...he is making us a world loser as reflected in his new decor.

If this were your living room, the look would be okay. However it isn't.
The colors, at best, look warm and inviting. That's not exactly a message which would help lend a president authority when he's seen there or build a sense of awe for the office for people who are presented to the president there.
Its like the people inside this administration are deliberately trying to make it more difficult to govern the country.

The Oval Office is .. well an office. In my office, we don't have comfy couches to sit on - we sit at our desks and work! The changes that have been made to make this look like a nice hotel suite instead of a place to get some work done remind me of the numerous golf games and vacations that seem to be occurring on a regular basis.

I am a constitutional conservative and have many political differences with Barack Obama. That being said, I take umbrage at some of the ridiculous comments ascribed to him. People say his name is not a Christian name, however, the name Barak is found in Judges, when Deborah the Judge says, "Arise oh Barak." They also deny his testimony as a Christian. Also, the man has inheirited a bankrupt nation from a former greedy unethical regime whom socialized the national economy via bailouts to their big business buddies. Why don't we as a people pray for this leader, that the Lord would give him wisdom, whom is now in office? He is a flawed man, like us! He needs support rather than the constant naysaying and tearing down that he receives. Let's give his ideas a chance. If they are wrong ideas, lets pray that he will have the humility to admit it and to change them for the better. Both political parties are bankrupt morally. We need leaders whom will lead with high moral character that does the right thing because it is right, representing the will of the people whom are goverened by consent, upholding the Constitution, and that will only happen if we engage in much prayer for the politicians of our nation, the people, and the Government.

From the NYT article By JULIE V. IOVINE
Published: January 28, 2001
"Gerald Ford toned it down considerably, heralding the age of what could be called the suburbanized Oval Office. A press release at the beginning of his administration announced that his workspace would have a ''warmer feeling.'' In fact it looked like Dad's den, right down to the brown curtains and pipe racks." AND so like his forgettable and equally ineffective democratic ancestors, OBAMA will go down in history for his lack of strength, stance or apparent effectiveness.
Be proud Dems, be proud. your work is complete.

It's banal. If Paul Fussell could see it, my guess is he'd describe it as decidedly middle class. The neutral tones are more or less the political correctness of the interior design world, which is why it has the look of a hotel room. As Fussell might say, it's designed not to offend, which is why it doesn't inspire awe.

"The Welfare of Each of Us is Dependent Fundamentally Upon the Welfare of All of Us" -- President Theodore Roosevelt
This is the troubling quotation. This is the progressive, redistribution mind set.
Don't worry about giving all your wealth to the government to redistribute it. It's OK. Your welfare is dependent on it so it is actually a good thing.
DEPENDENT is the key work for the progressives. They need for us to be dependent on the government.

Just a very minor detail I notice-the seal on the carpet appears to be missing some olives. There are, from what I understand, supposed to be 13 arrows, stripes, tail feathers, and olives. Looks like they'll have to return it.
As for the eagle facing the olive branch-Wikipedia will tell you this is a rumor. There is no rule or law stating the seal changes during war. Actually, I always heard there was some difference between our left-looking eagle and the right-looking Totalitarian eagles. Even if we did change seals during wars, we haven't been in a declared war since 1945. Everything else has been police actions, 3rd world pizza delivery missions, Operations Other than War, and peace keeping. Until we get a Congressional declaration of war, it's all BS.

Every President has the right to change the Oval Office as well as the family quarters. What bothers me in this time of economic distress is that he spends money like we were in a boom. It does not matter who pays for it, it is the impression he and his wife gives. Others may have been on vacation as much or more, but they went to places they owned or Camp David. This couple goes to places that cost exorbitant amounts of money. Their lifestyle is that of the "kings" to us the "peasants". He is not a leader. Neither one of them have a clue what this country needs. He makes bad choices like not changing the Oval Office traditionally during the inauguration. He has to go on another expensive trip and do it while eyes are not looking. Again, really bad choices. As for the decor, it's nothing bad nor nothing great. Kinda like this man, could have been really great, but in the end, a huge disappointment.

Hey! Give the Obama's a break. First of all it takes a lot to match Laura's classiness. They have no hope there. Also, after the EIGHT years that President Bush occupied the office, it got a lot of use. It may have needed a little freshening up. Not to worry, it will get a face lift in a couple of years again.

It's my understanding that sitting presidents redecorate the oval office as a favor to the previous president. Most former presidents include a reproduction of their oval office in their presidential library. Some of the items replace will most likely show up in the Bush Presidential Library.

I am no fan of Obama at all, but this is not even a big deal, every president personalizes the office to some extent. Looking at the renovations though, the curtains and couches don't fit at all. It's pretty bland. if you're not going to go with the red/white/blue theme, then at least make it look nice. this reminds me of a Marriott lobby, all it needs is a coffee machine.

They live in a make believe world, get outrageous money for not working and lecture me? In fact to the extent they want a CEO's pay regulated I would like theirs to be limited to $150,000 a year, they don't make a darn thing and only provide headaches for the intelligent.

looks like the sand in the desert. Amazing no emphasis on the colors red, white or blue, but then again, it does make sense.

The eagle's wings on the seal on the rug look too small for the size of the bird. I guess the eagle won't be flying too far or high.

Who would have thought that the conservative losers in life, crackpots that they are, would slither out of the woodwork to comment on of all things, office decor? Too much time on their hands between Crazy Glenn rallies.

Where were all of these juveniles when Bush&Cheney were giving the Dirty Rich, their biggest tax cut in our history? all you kids can do, is whine like babies, about some furnishings in our White House. It's too bad all of you didn't volunteer for combat duty in Iraq, when that slaughter was in full gear, or in Afghanistan! Then, I think, you would have a more realistic sense as to what is difficult and unacceptable. No, you're too busy being lapdogs for the Corporations or the Dirty Rich!! It's a good thing you have former Senator Phil Gramm on your side, he can define the meaning of the word, whiner, very accurately. As a mater of fact, he is a living example of what a whiner looks and acts like. He has had a multitude of years practicing. He is thee expert in that field and from the looks of most of your posts, you taken your lessons well.

New carpet and furniture wil not help this country get back on track. I would someone to tell me one good thing obama has done for this country, include facts to back up the claim. I wish obama would stand up and be a man and quit blaming other people, that includes a few dead ones, and do what is right for the people for once, 2012 is coming FAST.

Go, President Obama. Keep on, keeping on. America sure knew what she was doing when she elected you, President. You continue to fight the good fight, you and Vice-President Biden and for that America is grateful. We know that all of the forces of greed are arrayed against you, trying with whatever reprehensible tactic they can imagine, to distract you from your mission, given to you by our Constitution: "...with liberty and justice for all." Yet, you fight on.
You still have my support and my vote. Carry on, Commander-In Chief!! You're doing a heck of a job.

silk stockings and dirty feet (my mother's axiom). you are from where you come.

And to the Oval Office.

What is all this 'he's always on vacation' talk?
Reagan 1st year 42 days
GW Bush 1st year 69 days
GHW Bush 1st Year 40 days (and that's only to Kennebunkport)
Obama 1st year 26 days
Carter 1st year 19 days
Clinton 1st year 21 days
GW Bush took more days on vacation in his first year than the last three Presidents in the list combined.
Trips to Camp David:
Obama 1st year: 27 days
GW Bush 1st year: 78 days
And whomever said about the 'traditional blue' did you not see the dentist's office picture it used to be?

You have to admit that is one funny headline!

"diggndirt54 - The Eagle always faced the Olive Branch on the Great Seal of the United States of America. "
Actually, in the Great Seal, the eagle faced the arrows in his right talon until Harry Truman had it changed following WWII. After that great war he wanted the United States to look toward peace.
As for Obama's redecoration of the oval office, it's fine. Certainly more casual, which will make all the Democrat staffers more comfortable as they work in their jeans and shirt sleeves. And it's certainly more modern, less in keeping with the style of that historic building -- but that is perfect too, because Obama is a president who does not respect our founding principles and seeks to "fundamentally change" them. So, the remodel is a perfect representation of his presidency. Except its much classier than he is.
Besides, its far better than Bill Clintons decor.

Wow! You can definitely tell this was linked off of Drudge. All these idiots acting like they have never fixed up their office. Get a life you people and start complaining about real issues. Don't you have a minority to harass or a wilderness to plunder?

To all you right wing nut jobs again. So many ignorant haters are being eaten away with bitterness. You cannot stand to see a smart man doing a fantastic job. All of you Glen Beck Kool Aid drinkers, I ask, can you do a better job? Stop hating. Your insides will rot with hatred. If all of you haters were put in one room, you could not run the country for one hour.
President Obama is The President like it or not. Get used to it.,
Posted by: Mary F. | September 3, 2010 11:42 PM
Let's get this straight, Obama didn't spend a dime of his own money to get this redecorated. Just like Liberals to try to give him credit, but not knowing the truth.
The biggest problem with the makeover is the rug. It gives credit to Martin Luther King for the quote: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice." That was said by Theodore Parker, not MLK.
If Barry Obama thinks it's such an important statement, the correct person needs to be credited.

i liked the other sofas they lasted over 10 years and still looked good. i know because i worked on them in hickory nc
they came from century furniture. i 8 way hand tied the springs in them.bush ordered them. i think they looked better in the oval.they were made to last.
obama should have had them reupholstered.and kept them.
Posted by: mike childers | September 5, 2010 3:17 PM
Not my choice the coffee table look to large for someone with Obama height to sit and to modern. The money came from Obama election fund the rug was donated; most of furniture has been in room from past pic I looked at.I just don't understand why decorate now; demo are pushing away from president so the chances of him making to second term do not look good. The rug Bush had Obama said he liked so why change and spend donation money on decorating a room that will be occupied by I hope a man of action instead of no action.I had faith in you and you let me down Obama!

What Mary F.'s comment might have looked like six years ago:
"To all you left wing nut jobs again. So many ignorant haters are being eaten away with bitterness. You cannot stand to see a regular guy doing a fantastic job. All of you Al Franken Kool Aid drinkers, I ask, can you do a better job? Stop hating. Your insides will rot with hatred. If all of you haters were put in one room, you could not run the country for one hour.
President Bush is The President like it or not. Get used to it.,"
That would offend you then, wouldn't it?
The left reserved the right to sling mud about every detail of Bush's life, even making a fake "entertainment" documentary about assassinating him. Was that civil and respectful?
Don't pretend that you don't have piles of hate of your own, as in hating anyone with a different view than yours. Oh, and by the way nobody believes you if you say that you just "Hate H8" and other nonsensical middle school platitudes like that. There are always other human beings on the other side of the police tape at the protest, unworthy of even your self-justified version of hate.

NOBAMA keeps spending money when our economy is in the crapper, Not because of GWB. Try the Clinton presidency and his global economy. Remember North American Free Trade agreement and the World Free Trade agreement? Those two stupid ideas and corporate greed is why all the jobs have left and we are broke! It Turns out that making the rest of the world have a better economy is bankrupting the USA. Most companies have tariffs for products made outside by one of their companies not us. Repeal NAFTA and WFTA and tax the companies sending jobs out and bring back the tariffs and we will rebound.
